The health of the world's oceans is a growing concern but measuring ocean health is a complicated undertaking. Some people studying the issue focus on pollution, while others look at the health of corals or marine mammals. One project attempts to take a comprehensive picture of the health of oceans in order to provide information about Oceanic vital signs to stakeholders. The Ocean Health Index is the focus of this episode of Stats+Stories with guests Lelys Bravo and Julia Stewart Lowndes. Lelys Bravo is a Statistics Professor at the Department of Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before that she was a member of the Science Steering Committee of the Biospherical Aspects of the Hydrological Cycle project from the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP) and Lead author of the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment report. Her research interests include spatial and temporal analysis of environmental data, including the development of risk assessment methods to evaluate the impacts of natural hazards under potential climate change. Julia Stewart Lowndes (@juliesquid) is a marine ecologist, data scientist, and Senior Fellow at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at the University of California Santa Barbara. She champions kinder, better science in less time through open data science and teamwork. As a marine data scientist, Mozilla Fellow, and Senior Fellow at NCEAS, she has 7+ years designing and leading programs to empower science teams with skillsets and mindsets for reproducible research, empowering researchers with existing open tools and communities. She has been building communities of practice in this space since 2013 with the Ocean Health Index.
The BiG Scuba Duo, Gemma and Ian chat to James Neal. James has been passionate about scuba diving and the aquatic realm since childhood, having grown up watching Jacques Cousteau on TV, along with Robinson Crusoe, Stingray and such like. He suffered a subarachnoid Haemorrhage, grade 4 bleed on the brain, fatal in 80% of cases and was told he would never dive again! That was almost 12 years and over 1,200 dives ago! Unfortunately, he has experienced stigmatism and discrimination because of his haemorrhage ever since! He is an IDC Staff Instructor, soon to be Master Instructor and a technical diver, hypoxic trimix and full cave trained cave diver. James has recently taken on the role of Brand Ambassador for Narked at 90 that compliments his role as brand ambassador for Sea & Sea Ltd representing the Huish Outdoors brands in the UK, which are: Atomic Aquatics, BARE, Hollis, Oceanic, Stahlsac & Zeagle. This Sunday we have missionaries Alvin and Lacey Leota as our guest speakers. The Leotas are not strangers to Crossroads! They have been one of our precious missionary partners for many years and have also been a part of our "I Thirst For You" Conferences. The Leota family has a new assignment to raise up missionaries among the Oceanic people groups, with a focus on Samoans. Alvin is Samoan and has had a heart for his people for many years. Now, the Lord has released his family to minister among his own people group. This Sunday, Alvin and Lacey will not only share a message from the Word of God, but they will also update Crossroads about their missionary journey and the location of their new assignment. You do not want to miss this Sunday!

He is also an active KC-135 Stratotanker pilot with the Tennessee Air National Guard who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in December 2024. James holds a CFI, A&P with Inspection Authorization (IA), and Seaplane ratings (ASES, AMEL, ASEL). He has over 1,000 flight hours in a range of aircraft, from the KC-135 Stratotanker to a Cessna 140, and holds type ratings in the Boeing 707, Boeing 720, Beechjet 400, and Mitsubishi MU-300. James graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Maintenance Management. In our conversation, James describes flying the KC-135 Stratotanker in a night-time combat mission and experiencing a loss of electrical power. He and his crew managed to compensate and return safely to base. We also look at how he started his aircraft maintenance business, the type of work performed, and his commitment to a high-level white-glove service. James' aircraft maintenance company works primarily on Cirrus airplanes, and he is also a Diamond Aircraft authorized service center, an Epic service center, and a Garmin avionics dealer. Seaplane discovery rides and ICON A5 training are offered through Iconic Air & Sea Adventures. James also produces the The James Spearman Show podcast. Eleven Airmen from the 134th Air Refueling Wing receive the Distinguished Flying Cross on December 7, 2024 at a ceremony on McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base, Knoxville, Tennessee. Cosmological Readings of Contemporary Australian Literature: Unsettling the Anthropocene (Routledge, 2024) presents an innovative and imaginative reading of contemporary Australian literature in the context of unprecedented ecological crisis. The Australian continent has seen significant, rapid changes to its cultures and land-use from the impact of British colonial rule, yet there is a rich history of Indigenous land-ethics and cosmological thought. By using the age-old idea of 'cosmos'--the order of the world--to foreground ideas of a good order and chaos, reciprocity and more-than-human agency, this book interrogates the Anthropocene in Australia, focusing on notions of colonisation, farming, mining, bioethics, technology, environmental justice and sovereignty. It offers 'cosmological readings' of a diverse range of authors--Indigenous and non-Indigenous--as a challenge to the Anthropocene's decline-narrative. As a result, it reactivates 'cosmos' as an ethical vision and a transculturally important counter-concept to the Anthropocene. Kathrin Bartha-Mitchell argues that the arts can help us envision radical cosmologies of being in and with the planet, and to address the very real social and environmental problems of our era. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Ecocriticism, Environmental Humanities, and postcolonial, transcultural and Indigenous studies, with a primary focus on Australian, New Zealand, Oceanic and Pacific area studies. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Ecocriticism, Environmental Humanities, and postcolonial, transcultural and Indigenous studies, with a primary focus on Australian, New Zealand, Oceanic and Pacific area studies. Grand Nagus: We are in the middle of the New Year's Event, called ‘Heavensturn' I promptly used the tabletop dish in my new OCE house, this is how it looks on the table among others: I used the mugs from the Christmas event, as you can see, since i don't have the reagents and materials on this character, yet, to craft coffee or tea cups, so i bought a few more Christmas mugs so i can use them. As part of the event you can raffle for a fortune, good fortune or bad fortune, so i'm really happy with that. It's just a cosmetic thing that doesn't have any ingame power, just for fun. I won the lottery on my Oceanic homeworld for a beach front house. It was a really nice new year's present. Materia DC, Sephirot World, Ward 21 Plot 19. I don't have a Message book yet, and the house is classified as ‘Under Renovation' for now, but you are more than welcome to stop by. I've been unlocking a few new submarine destinations in my FC Workshop. Submarines and Airships are basically timed exploration missions that can take up to 1,5 IRL days to complete, depending on the speed of the vessel and how many destinations you visit. You level up your ships AprilPvd in VR: So I don't think I wanna play with kids anymore. You get a lot of loud noises in the background and I messed up. He wasn't giving clear. He was trying to order me around drop the anchor raise the anchor. Let's just keep going nice and he was just very basically annoying and we ended up dying which happens I mean, gosh it's just a game and then he ran back to tell everybody how awful I was. Sail Loaded money up on my steam account so that I could buy the blue coins in SAIL which I used for cosmetics. I wanted to make a purple boat. Turns out you cannot buy the coins on steam, and you can only buy them on the Meta version. I met a character was only level two so I immediately stop playing Steam and work to level up my Meta character. But there is the daily challenge in which you can earn blue coins, 101 challenge and between five and 50 when you spin a wheel. So I've been hopping onto the Steam version every day to complete the challenge, hoping to get enough of the blue coins, too get some cosmetics. During this period, the band found themselves balancing between their evolving identity and the influence of acts like Godflesh, The Melvins, and Neurosis. While many have cited their follow-up, Oceanic, as a career-defining moment, this debut features a raw heaviness interwoven with the atmosphere and themes that would ultimately shape future releases. SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 122*The Sun's Most Powerful Solar Flare in Over a DecadeThe Sun has unleashed its most powerful solar flare in more than a decade, with a spectacular X9.1 class event. This massive solar flare, part of a pair that erupted just two days apart, was detected by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. The event sparked strong G3 class geomagnetic storms, causing auroral activity to reach mid-latitudes and triggering deep shortwave radio blackouts. Solar flares, like this one, can have significant impacts on Earth's atmosphere, communications, and power grids.*Ceres: A Former Ocean World?New research suggests that the dwarf planet Ceres may have once been an ocean world. The study, published in Nature Astronomy, indicates that Ceres has a dirty icy crust, suggesting a past filled with muddy oceans. Computer simulations reveal that the crust may contain up to 90% ice, challenging previous assumptions of a drier Ceres. The findings are based on data from NASA's Dawn mission, which observed surface features like volcanoes and glaciers.*NASA's Europa Clipper MissionNASA's Europa Clipper mission is set for launch to explore Jupiter's ice-covered moon, Europa. The mission aims to investigate the moon's potential for life, with a suite of nine scientific instruments on board.
