Support our mission to change a culture, one man at a time – https://menofiron.org/donate This week we continue our Faith in Sports Series with Olympic and World Champion Wrestler Kyle Snyder. In this episode, Kyle shares his incredible journey of wrestling and faith. At a young age Kyle wanted to be an Olympic Champion. Wrestling was everything. Kyle shares how his wrestling career shaped his understanding of God. "Through wrestling I found out who God was and who Jesus is." Kyle is a 2016 Olympic Gold Medal winning wrestler. He is the youngest Olympic gold medalist and youngest World Champion in American wrestling history. He was a 3-time NCAA National Champion at Ohio State with a career record of 75-5 and ended his college career as the first and only wrestler to win the NCAA, World and Olympic championships as a collegiate athlete. After moving to the Olympic Training Center as a senior in High School, Kyle started going to Bible studies at the request of coaches and continued attending them as a freshman at Ohio State. Despite his desire to grow in his faith, his identity was still wrapped up in his wrestling accomplishments. A heart breaking loss in the NCAA Finals as a freshman sent Kyle into a state of depression and ultimately led to him surrendering it all to Jesus. This decision changed Kyle's life, allowing him to embrace his God-given abilities fully. Throughout this conversation, Kyle emphasizes the importance of being anchored in God's Word and how his commitment to studying the Bible and finding mentorship continues to strengthen his faith. Kyle concludes by highlighting that our ultimate purpose in life is to know God, grow in His character, serve Him, and teach others about Him. For Katherine Shai, the sport of wrestling is embedded into the culture of her family. Her father was an Olympic wrestler, Olympic coach and was instrumental in growing the sport of women's wrestling. Her sister was also an elite wrestler. She was drawn into it for its competitiveness and intensity but excelled once she understood the power of choice. By choosing to show up for herself and choosing how to train regardless of the outcome, she created the process to achieve success at every level. She became a 2X College National Champion. Senior National Champion, University World Champion, 7X Team USA National Team member and a 2X Olympic Alternate. More importantly, she helped give the sport a platform where others could advocate for themselves, get more opportunities and achieve the unthinkable like winning Olympic Gold Medals for USA in women's wrestling. She has also used her experiences to create LuchaFit which is a series of resources including articles and workshops to address gaps in education, mental preparation and athlete well-being. Whether or not you get your hand raised at the end of a match, Katherine Shai teaches us to anchor into our values and choose to come back Monday! @katherineshai, @lucha.fit

FIDF CEO Steven Weil is joined by Israeli Olympic Gold Medalist Tommy Reuveny to discuss his experience being an Israeli olympian during the war, traveling the world as an Israeli Jewish athlete, and what it meant to him to be the only Israeli gold medalist in the 2024 olympics. Tommy explains that October 7th occurred shortly after the olympic trials. Tommy's brother is a IDF soldier for an elite unit. He arrived on the scene in the morning of October 7th. After three days of anxiously waiting, Tommy got word that his brother was okay. While training was difficult for Tommy after the attack, the olympic committee urged him and the other Israeli olympians to go out and win a medal. The fear of a repeat of the Munich Olympics, coupled with whatsapp death threats and the desire to win a medal for his country in desperate need of victory, the pressure was immense. Tommy was even urged not to wear clothing that would identify him was a Jew or Israeli in public, or speak Hebrew in public. But the threats and the will to win for his country propelled Tommy's competitive spirit, ultimately resulting in a runaway finish for the gold. Donate NOW at FIDF.org for the fastest and most direct way to give IDF Soldiers what they need most. 100% of your contribution will go to meet their emergency humanitarian needs.

Jackie Dubrovich and I had a wonderful conversation about her families historical journey to to America. We also took a few minutes to share our similarities. Interestingly enough, both of us have stories to share of an Olympic experience, but from different perspectives. It was fun to reminisce about my experience at the 1980, XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. These particular winter games are remembered for the U.S. Men's Ice Hockey Team's "Miracle on Ice" gold-medal run plus Eric Hieiden's five gold medals in speed skating and so much more. I was a college student at the time and was hired to work in the transportation Dept and drive the athletes and country representatives to and from the Olympic Village into downtown Lake Placid for events and medal ceremonies. Lake Placid is a beautiful town nestled in the middle of the New York Adirondack Mountains. Go for a visit if you ever have an opportunity. It's absolutely beautiful.Ms. Dubrovich couldn't have been more gracious and happy to share stories of her mother and her mom's experience traveling by herself to America from Belarus, to marry the love of her life and become an American Citizen. Just think of the bravery it took for a young woman to board a flight and head into the unknown. She didn't speak english. She had one suitcase with her possessions and fifty dollars in her pocket.Valentina, according to her daughter is one of the hardest working moms she knows. Valentina worked in a Russian food store before coming to the United States. To this day she still works regularly and even on her days off, according to her daughter, "she still works hard." Jackie recalls her mother studying, from books she took out from the local library, for her test to become an American Citizen. Jackie and her parents spoke Russian to one another at home and with other family members. Jackie even continued her Russian studies at Columbia University in New York City . As a first generations American , she completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology, Human Rights and Russian Literature and Culture in 2016.Valentina could never have imagined in her wildest dreams that her daughter would become and Olympic Athlete, let alone a Gold Medalist in Fencing. Jackie and her parents had big dreams and expectations for their daughter, eldest of two children. At times, Jackie definitely felt the pressure to be the best of the best. She regularly recognized her parents high expectations for both she and her younger brother, also a professional athlete. But Jackie got to the point where she had to be able to handle her experiences and career as a professional on her own terms. As a family, they all learned how to communicate better and Jackie's parents learned to step back a little bit to let her handle her trajectory.Jackie and her partner, Brian Kaneshige, have opened a new fencing facility in Orange, New jersey called "Polaris Fencing Center." Both Jackie and Brian wanted to be able to give back to the next generation of kids who may not be able to afford years of training and expenses, yet are passionate about a career in Fencing.Valentina couldn't be more proud of her daughter and her accomplishments. After the pandemic and the 2020 Olympics, Jackie had a tough time. Not really sure if she was interested in training for another four years for the next Olympics. "In Eastern European culture, it's not very common to talk about your feelings, but my parents did a really good job, to know what to say when I was low." Both parents supported her then as well as now.Website: https://www.polarisfencing.com/. @polarisfencingcenterSOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jackiedubrovich/?hl=enLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackiedubrovich/ "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Since starting the podcast in 2017, I've been fortunate to speak with quite a few Olympic Gold medallists. It's even more fun when you have known them since before that victory and observed their progress. Today's guest is Leeds-based triathlete, Jess Learmonth. I've known Jess for quite sometime, and I'm so pleased to be chatting with her today! About 8 or 9 years ago she started swimming with our Masters group at the Survival Saturday session. 2 hours of pain overseen by our enthusiastic coach, Alan Hutchinson. Jess went right into the top lane and then carried on. As you'll hear in the show she was getting back into the pool after a 6 year absence. She'd started to dabble in triathlon and, because of the huge engine she built as a younger swimmer, she progressed very quickly. It wasn't long before she was selected for British Triathlon funding and a pathway through to the elite squad. Arguably the strongest swimmer in the sport, Jess often emerged first from the water, and as one of the best cyclists, she then set the tone on the bike, hammering away at the front. As you'll hear, running was a struggle for Jess. The ‘floppy ankles & feet' required to be a good swimmer definitely do not help with running. In the conversation there's a great message from Jess' run coach Malcolm Brown about the value of consistency in training. Please listen out for that one. Jess and I also chat about: The brutality of swimming squads for young athletes and why it “drained the life" out of Jess Why triathlon swimming seems so easy in comparison Having patience and building resilience Floppy ankles and not being a natural runner The hot, surreal experience of winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 Pregnancy, motherhood and why there are more important things in life than triathlon To find out more about Jess you can go to: Website - JessLearmonth.com Instagram - JessLearmonth Jess recommended the book Scientific Training for Triathletes by Phil Skiba Jess is a keen Leeds United fan and loves this podcast Square Ball: The Leeds United Podcast **To get a free copy of my personal daily mobility routine, please click HERE** To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please visit her website at BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk.
