We're doing something different this week as we continue to mourn the passing of our dear friend and frequent collaborator, Andy Morton. Back in this past November, Will was keeping Andy company during one of his chemo treatments and the two decided to record a quick 20-minute interview about Andy's experiences with his cancer fight and how he was doing at the time before things unfortunately ended the way they did and we lost him a couple weeks back. We figured it would be valuable for people going through a similar situation or curious about what it's like, but honestly just getting to hear Andy again feels so good during this painful, unbelievable time when we're still struggling with the fact that he's gone and we can't have one more talk with him like we used to. Which is why we knew it couldn't just go on the patreon as was the thought at the time it was recorded, but needed to be shared with everybody else out there still missing Andy something awful. Anyway, we hope you enjoy this very special episode, and we'll be back to our regular bullshit next week, as best we can. Today, Eric Rozenberg is excited to share with you, the listeners, ten books that impressed and impacted him. He sincerely hopes that you will read and enjoy them and that they will inspire you as much as they did him! Bio: Eric Rozenberg has helped thousands of entrepreneurs grow and manage their businesses better. His purpose is to inspire people with integrity and honesty, help them take action, get results, and develop their businesses and their lives. For two decades in his previous life, Eric consulted with Fortune 500 companies and produced award-winning sales meetings, incentive trips, product launches, and conferences in more than 50 countries across diverse industries. He believes organizations must create meetings and events that are not only breathtakingly memorable but also will bring corporate strategies to life and amplify team motivation/performance. Eric is an acquisition entrepreneur, speaker, podcaster, and two-time Amazon bestselling author. His podcast, "The Business of Meetings", is the first podcast in the Meetings & Events Industry dedicated to business owners. Every Tuesday, listeners learn something new they can apply in their businesses and/or get inspired by amazing guests. His first book, Meeting at C-Level, is the first book on the Why of a meeting. It has been endorsed by 20 of the most influential leaders from the corporate and association worlds and helps professionals to position themselves as strategic partners. His second book, Before It's Too Late, A Love Letter to my Daughters and America, is a story of grit, perseverance, and courage. It describes why and how he and his wife brought their daughters to America and why it is the greatest country on Earth. Eric is a current member of the Entrepreneurs Organization (EO) and of The Strategic Forum. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Demoucelle Parkinson Foundation in Belgium and was the first European to serve as Chairman of the International Board of Meetings Professional International (MPI), the largest professional association in the Meetings and Events Industry. Eric's ten recommended books: The Joy of Success, by Susan Ford Collins The Business Model Generation, by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur The Hawke Method, by Eric Huberman Trust Me, I'm Lying, by Ryan Holiday Who Not How, by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy The Alter Ego Effect, by Todd Herman Building a StoryBrand, by Donald Miller The Psychology of Money, by Morgan Housel One Last Talk, by Philip McKernan Before It's Too Late, by Eric Rozenberg The Joy of Success, by Susan Ford Collins Susan is a Co-founder of the Strategic Forum in Miami. She has been coaching people throughout her career. The Joy of Success: Ten Essential Skills for Getting the Success You Want was the first of the several books she has written. While writing the book, she looked into what made people successful and realized there are ten essential skills every successful person applies, regardless of their culture or country. Eric found the ten skills she mentioned exciting and easy to apply. He particularly likes her idea of creating a Success File. The Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur (Designed by Alan Smith) Eric often refers to this book in his workshops or when people talk to him about their businesses because it is an interesting story. Alexander Osterwalder was writing a dissertation on business models, and that became his business. The idea behind it is to have different blocks to consider for any kind of business. You can download a tool called Business Model Canvas, where everything is mapped into one box to brainstorm a business model for a business of any size. It will eliminate the need to do market research for at least six months. The Hawke Method, by Erik Huberman Erik Huberman leads one of the fastest-growing digital agencies in America. He positioned the term “fractional CMO”. The book, The Hawke Method, is centered around the principles of awareness, nurturing, and building trust. The author gives concrete examples to illustrate ways to implement those principles. Eric recommends this book for anyone from beginners in the marketing field to seasoned entrepreneurs. Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator, by Ryan Holiday Ryan Holiday has written several books, including Stillness Is the Key and Perennial Seller. Trust Me, I'm Lying is a frightening book, but it is also enlightening. In the book, the author explains that incorrect information does get corrected after an article has been published. He also discusses what he did with a well-known retail chain regarding using social media to launch a product. Who Not How by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy Dan Sullivan is a master coaching guru. Who not How is a principle that entrepreneurs and business owners who think they are irreplaceable and nobody can do things as well as they do, can apply to encourage them to move in the opposite direction. The Alter Ego Effect: The Power of Secret Identities to Transform Your Life, by Todd Herman Todd Herman is a fascinating person who coaches athletes and individuals. He wrote The Alter Ego Effect to explain that athletes reach a point where they have to go above and beyond what they would usually do, and the person they become when they put their engine in overdrive is known as their alter ego. In the book, the author explains how to create an alter ego and how to leverage its power to overcome challenges and achieve way more than you would usually achieve in your life. Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen, by Donald Miller This book is a must-read for anyone considering starting a new business or who may be re-inventing an existing business. The book explains the entire methodology and journey of using seven steps to create a StoryBrand to help them define the StoryBrand for their companies. The Psychology of Money: Timeless Lessons on Wealth Greed and Happiness, by Morgan Housel This is a fascinating book about money. It contains impactful stories and themes to help readers reflect on their values and relationship with money. One Last Talk: Why Your Truth Matters and How to Speak It, by Philip McKernan One Last Talk is an invitation for readers to find their truth and speak it out loud to at least one person. The book gives a framework to help readers do it. It is called One Last Talk to challenge and inspire readers to focus their minds and open their hearts by making them face their metaphorical death. It is an inspiring and fascinating read! Before It's Too Late: A Love Letter To My Daughters and America, by Eric Rozenberg Eric is very proud of his book! It is a legacy project. It is the story of why Eric and his family left Europe, the rise of antisemitism, the rise of Islamism, and the cowardliness of leaders. The book goes into the current situation that prompted them to leave for America and the similarities and differences they see in America. The book has many links and references to help readers fact-check and learn more about what Eric has written. Eric hopes you will enjoy reading these books! Philip McKernan is an author, speaker, filmmaker, and coach, but he's more than his titles. Dr. Laura heard Philip speak a few years ago, and the overwhelming vibration of resonance spoke to her so much that she knew she would work with him in some capacity one day - which she has. Philip talks about his Brave Soul program and why he believes the path to a happy and fulfilling life is found in the meaning we derive in life, work, our relationship with others, and the most important relationship of all — the one with oneself. Dr. Laura and Philip talk about what it means to be courageous and embrace your gift, how to step into your artistry, and how our biggest gift is sometimes right next to our deepest wound. Philip shares what it means to him to be brave, and what happens when we embody our gifts in the most meaningful way possible. What You'll Hear In This Episode: Dr. Laura talks about her own experience seeing Philip speak in a crowd of 3,000 and how it changed the course of her life. Philip talks about what bravery and courage mean to him, and how he acts as a facilitator for others to step into their own courage. This work isn't easy, and Philip has his share of people feeling resistance and strong emotions towards him, as they reveal some hard truths that may require them to take a deep look at their life. How Philp has learned to sit in the big emotions of others and hold space for them. Philip acts as a mirror so others can do the work and have tremendous breakthroughs. He shows up in a way that allows others to be unpolished and vulnerable. Philip opens up about his own challenges and vulnerabilities as someone who can channel and facilitate. How we can doubt our "gifts" and how those who often most doubt our gifts are the ones that are closest to us. As we lean into our gifts, it can remind others that they are staying the same. How talents are different than gift. We can often protect ourselves to the point where we die with the greatest expression of our artistry still left in our souls. Quotes: “I'm the father you didn't have. I'm the job you should have taken. I'm the life you aren't living.” — Philip “I believe we are all artists in a very deep way.” — Philip “I think deeply all of us want some type of radical simplicity in our lives.” — Philip “Most of us have families that want us to be happy. But most of us have families that don't want us to change.” - Philip “Sometimes the way I play with discovering my gift is by not asking those closest to me, but by asking other people who are further from my inner circle and may simply brush up against me in the work that I do in the world.” — Dr. Laura “Gifts always have an element of impact to them in it.” — Philip “I don't think you can fail when you lean into your gift.” — Philip Take Dr. Laura's Free Quiz! — What's your Divine Feminine Sovereign Style? “That's what we do. We deny the parts of ourselves that are the most authentic expression of who we are in this world. It takes a ton of energy, it's exhausting, but we don't even realize how exhausting it is until we finally own up to it.” – Philip McKernan Connect with REIN Canada REIN Canada CEO@reincanada.com Facebook Instagram Twitter Show Notes [02:08] Patrick introduces his next guest, Philip McKernan. [03:36] Philip and Patrick reconnect over the Zoom waves after several years and catch up with what Philip is up to now. [06:31] Philip expands on the type of work he and his wife Pauline are doing and how they have doubled-down in the last few years to reach as many people as possible. [08:25] The perfect referral that he never imagined – the desire for personal growth and development becoming proactive rather than reactive. The work they're doing now with clients is broadening and going to deeper to lean into that shift. [11:47] Regrets, They've Had a Few. The data collected by a hospice worker on the regrets of the dying; I wish: I'd had the courage to live true to myself and not others' expectations, I hadn't worked so hard, I had the courage to express my feelings, I had stayed in touched with friends, I'd let myself be happier. [14:12] Philip's perspective on why people choose not to be happy. [16:56] Patrick gives some context around aligning with our values and how he got tripped up by compromising his. [18:55] The magic and gold that exists when we explore our past to learn from it. Philip shares an example of this from one of their Ireland retreats and the work that results from that personal journey. [22:40] The way we show up to create an impact doesn't have to occur in epic proportions. [23:46] A rich and robust conversation between Philip and Patrick is built on the fundamental truth that finding purpose, sharing our gifts, being of contribution and creating impact in a way that aligns with who we truly are, is neither about monetization nor the money. Money is a useful outcome but the joy and truth of giving ourselves permission to connect with people from an authentic expression of who we are, is where the value lives. Listen to the examples they share of how this occurs. [38:42] Philip explains how much of what he delivers in his work from a place of intuition and how that has changed for him over the years. He also shares an observation of Patrick in the spirit of illustrating that our biggest impact usually stems from the things that come most naturally to us. [43:05] Philip delivers a beautiful example from One Last Talk of the impact available to others when we share what's within our heart. [46:27] Releasing the shame we carry and cling to, could be the single greatest opening to our personal freedom. Similarly, releasing the stubborn need to be right and making amends allows us to move forward with grace. [50:39] In this current COVID-19 reality of self-isolation and slowing down, Philip offers three questions for those who are creating this time for self reflection. 1) Who am I going to be through this crisis? 2) How am I going to remember myself as I look back? 3) How can I nurture myself during this time; how can I support myself, my family, my community, humanity? One bonus question: if the world suddenly flipped the switch back on – are you going to take up exactly where you left off or are you going to make some changes? [56:12] Shifting the stories we identify with: “this is just the way I am”, “this is the way I was raised”, “you don't understand my circumstances/my unique pain.” These are all mechanisms to shield ourselves from growth and showing up more powerfully. [60:38]: Philip offers another example which shows when we listen to our intuition and challenge the story we have been holding on to, the truth can reveal itself and blossom into self-accountability.

Website http://www.psychologyofentrepreneurship.com Opinion I liked the production (although at times the music in the background was a bit louder and made me have to work to hear you). The story of the dinner was immediate intimacy with the listener, and the explanation of the One Last Talk event hooked me in to want to hear about the person behind it. Philip McKernan is known for his book and events titled One Last Talk. He is an amazingly powerful human being with insights into how our identities are shaped and the impact that can have. Today we end up in a very REAL conversation about the impact of being a "hero."
Philip McKernan, the modern-day philosopher of the human experience, is a guy who truly wants to get behind the curtain to help us seek real clarity and move past our roadblocks. Philip gets beyond the seen and unseen blocks in our minds to develop a clear path to our dreams. He believes the way to a happy and fulfilling life is through the meaning we derive in life through our work, our relationships, and the most important relationship of all, the relationship with one's self. When people ask Philip what he does, how does he like to reply? If I ask his wife, Pauline, what he does, what would she say? His Mum said that even at a young age, people would come to Philip to help them sort out particular problems - why? What is the sense Philip gets when someone isn't truthful to themselves? What does he feel? Is there a difference between hearing and listening? When someone answers a question, Philip gets a sense there is more that they are not saying. How does he know? Is dissension from the right place valuable? Philip felt he wasn't heard as a child. How is he going about making sure his children feel they are honestly heard? By not showing vulnerability as parents are we being of a disservice to our kids? What story did Philip tell himself that held him back in his own life? Are we seeing and having less clarity due to distractions and the pace of life? Is our busyness leading to loneliness? Do we use other people as an excuse not to do what matters? Why our greatest gift lies right next to our deepest wounds Are people terrified of meeting themselves? How do we know what to trust in ourselves? Where is the intersection of trust and intuition? It's not just The 5 Regrets of the Dying; it's also the living with regrets. Has Philip ever faced his mortality? What scares Philip? How has Philip's One Last Talk changed in the last year? How has Philip simplified his life in the last 100 days? Recently, I had the honor of giving my One Last Talk. If you haven’t heard of OLT, the idea is to share with the world what you would most want people to know if you only had 15 minutes to do it and then you were gone from earth forever. It is the idea and program of Philip McKernan. If you’ve been listening to this podcast for awhile you may have heard of him here or at a conference, you may have attended or on a different podcast. I’ve interviewed Philip 3 times now. If you would like to hear them the first one is Episode 33 and the second is Ep 99. I don’t recall, at the moment, the Ep number for the third. I had the good fortune of giving my OLT in Boulder, Colorado. Philip was hosting the event. There were several other people in the audience I knew. I had gotten to know these other people a couple years earlier at another Philip McKernan event called BraveSoul. That event in Ireland. It was a retreat of sorts and we were there for 8 days together on the west coast in a little village named Ballyvaughn. You could throw a stone into the ocean from some of the cottages. One of these wonderful people I got to hang out with is a lovely woman by the name of Heidi who is from Great Britain. She happened to be one of my two cottage mates, both of whom I feel so blessed to have been there with. After I gave my OLT, Heidi came to me and said she was confused. I asked her why. She said her confusion came from what seemed like two different people regarding what I shared about my life and how I saw myself at my OLT in Boulder in 2019 compared to the person I came across as in Ireland in 2017. I still didn’t really get what she meant. I mean, I live with me, and my thoughts 24 hours a day. And while I knew I was different in many ways over the timeframe of two years they didn’t quite so significant. For the most part, I felt like the same person. What Heidi shared with me surprised me a bit. She said to me, “In Ireland, you came across as this grounded, wise, loving, beautiful kind of soul. After hearing your OLT today, I couldn’t believe how recently it was that you had these, other, darker thoughts about yourself.” Even as I’m saying this, it makes me want to pause. I’m thinking about how different I was 2 ½ years earlier. I was bottoming out emotionally. And when I say bottom, I mean the very bottom. I don’t want to tell the whole story here. I’m hoping that my One Last Talk is released as a podcast episode by Philip at some point and if it is, I will share it with you. You can hear first-hand what Heidi heard. As far as my conversation with Heidi, when she pointed these things out, I could see what she was saying. To hear the OLT and see me in Ireland it did seem like two different people. In truth, I guess I was. There was a lot of growth and change, and shifting between January 4th of 2017, and when I met Heidi in Ireland in June of 2017 and again all the way to when I gave my OLT in Boulder that Heidi was also there for. As I reflect on it, I guess we are never a completely different person and we are never completely the same person given enough time and space and experiences. I had no desire to present myself as two different people. My goal over the last 4 years has been to be as honest and transparent as I can be with myself first but certainly also with the world as well. But it is hard to be completely transparent about everything in our lives. In light of that, Heidi’s question still made me step back and ask myself, “Was I wearing some sort of mask during that week in Ireland?” “Was I trying to put on airs about myself and present to the world some guy who didn’t have a problem and Worse some guy who had all the answers because Lord knows I don’t. In giving my OLT I had to go deeper than I ever had before. I decided to share some things I had never shared before. And in so doing, some people who knew before the talk would have learned something or somethings they had never known before about me. And that is the whole idea behind One Last Talk. To share your deepest pain so others can learn they are not alone in this world. OLT was absolutely one of the best experiences of my life. I didn’t have any intention of sounding like I’m doing a commercial for OLT although I could. I didn’t plan on doing a promo for Philip McKernan although I could and would. And actually, as I’m sharing this with you it occurs to me that I should unpack a little more of what happened for me when I gave my OLT. But that is a story for another day. It’s hard to tell the complete truth. We are so terrified of being judged for what we think. We are so scared of sharing who we really are, what we have really felt and what we truly believe that opening up to the world can seem like a fate worse than death. Having been on this journey for the truth for the last few years, at least the truth of who I really am, Of who I completely am, Of who I really want to be in this world, unashamed, unapologetically, unabashedly, I really wish I could reveal all of who I am at once. The problem with that is it’s similar to when we look out on the horizon. We can only see so far. We don’t know what is beyond the horizon until we get there. And then we can see the new horizon in the distance. Only then do we get to see what is between us and the new horizon. That’s how life really is. We only know in part. We only know the part of us who we are willing to explore and challenge and question. Once we figure that out part out, we get to explore and challenge and question and wrestle with the next part. And on we go. Year after year until we run out of years. I don’t want to run out of years before I run out of understanding who I am. I don’t want to run out of years before I understand the world better. I don’t want to run out of years until I learn how to love this life and everything in it. What do you want to do? Are you willing to go to that horizon in the distance? Are we willing to go that far so we can not only see more of the world but also so the world can see more of us? More of the gifts that we have to share? More of the vision we have for ourselves and others and the world? We may not be able to see far enough that we know exactly what is ahead for us. Maybe we only have to see the horizon, head in that direction and along the way, find out a little more of who we are and the gift that we are to each other and to this world.
Philip McKernan Inspirational Speaker, Writer & Filmmaker I found out about Philip in a conversation with Srinivas Rao, the creator and genius mind behind The Unmistakable Creative Podcast. Philip has been a guest on his podcast several times and he and I will be a part of a completely unique conference Srinivas is putting together in Nashville, TN. In speaking with Srini about the conference, he told me he was trying to decide between Philip and I as to who he wanted to have close down the conference because of how dynamic he feels we both are. Clearly, that made me want to meet this man. Philip works with entrepreneurs and business leaders all over the world. When people are seeking clarity about their future or want to move through roadblocks, seen and unseen, they call Philip. What separates Philip from a lot of coaches, speakers and gurus is originality. He brings new conversations to the table and spends an obscene amount of time thinking and challenging the status quo, instead of simply repackaging business & life hacking strategies. Podcast Notes: Philip gave me permission to go behind the curtain of his public persona to speak to the man who has lived the life that he lives Hear how who his parents were, influenced him to be who he is Hear what his biggest fear is He is committed to not letting people die with who they are still inside of them How do you determine what a person's gift truly is Chasing vs. allowing vs. nudging it a little bit Sometimes people would rather fail at who they are not than have the courage to succeed at who they are. Allowing who you are to manifest So many people are doing things they do not want to do, living in places they do not want to live and living in the expectation that something will bring you joy that isn't fair. If you are doing things that do not bring you joy for the money that supports your family, relook at your life and change your expectations to fit your situation Or change your situation to rise up to your expectation I am making an impact in the world and helping people but I am not happy because I do not like myself. The tradeoff is based on a story you are telling yourself that may or may not be true. What if those stories are not true and how would it feel to put those stories down and look at the world without that story. The Old Hag and The Socialite People are afraid to allow themselves to look at their relationships and see what they have but see how much more is possible. We see it the most on the other side of the conversation when a person is dying. What scares you the most? becoming too important in my world scares me 95% of the people who do what I do think they know all the answers How do you prevent yourself from having that happen Hear what Philip does The slippage is already happening. You must realize it. How he checks himself in that slippage There are people who do not step up to be themselves because they are worried about falling into this trap A conversation he had with his daughter I share my vulnerability to keep myself grounded Who can access us better, ourselves or someone else? What is coming up for him right now One Last Talk- what it is? Giving voice to the people that have no voice Resistance of what we have been given is as bad as gloating in it What is Humility? Accepting what is in front of us vs. resisting it. What do you want people to walk away from the experience of One Last Talk What is the meaning behind this concept What happens when we think this is the last talk we will ever give The last creates an urgency that is not there at other times What has most surprised Philip in the work he has done? The clarity they have even when they don't know they have it When they get out of their own way, it comes so clearly What is the pivot point? Wake up calls The elephant moment What would a wake up call being trying to tell you today? I spent my whole life hiding and my greatest work is still to come when I stop hiding. What makes you still hide The fear of rejection The book in our back pocket we are scared to write What would your book say? What is it you don't want to let people know that you know you have to let people know Not hiding anything but rather there is a part of me that asks is your greatest work still to come. The thing we feel that doesn't have value is the most valuable part of us What that place is in Philip I am still hiding the pain and anguish I have had in life. And when Philip goes deeper into this, hear what emerges An experience of something that happened that I have never shared with anyone before? The story of what happened in the safest place he ever was in The experience of everything disappearing and what emerges that changes the life of the person he was with An incredibly vulnerable story How the book in your back pocket holds the secret to our greatness. The ultimate connection The governor we put on our own success. The one thing I believe I can influence in the world. Jon's back from Indonesia and is experiencing reverse culture shock as he returns 'home' to London. From that unstable vantage point, in this catch-up episode we talk about getting things done, why closing 'loops' in your day-to-day life is essential for your mental and emotional health, and how to take meaningful action in the absence of clarity. In aid of those goals, Andrea's adopted a policy of having no boundaries with other people. But how can that possibly work long term? We debate how to tame our psychological disposition to look for problems rather than positives, and why the grass is ever so much greener wherever you are not. Jon also went to One Last Talk, an event designed by our friend and sometime mentor Philip McKernan. There, ordinary people stand up and speak as if this was the last thing they could ever share with the world. Political rants and 5-step success plans are strictly off the table here. You can't tell the audience what they should do with their life, only share aspects of yours which feel more true than any Tony Robbins tribute act could manage. Philip McKernan is the author and founder of One Last Talk, the book and the movement. Philip helps you turn your mess into your message, find your deepest struggle and turn it into your best story. He works with people all over the world to remove mental roadblocks and see things they aren’t seeing. Philip has worked with the Canadian Olympic team, the Pentagon, and many professional sports teams. In this, the Only Business Networking Podcast on iTunes, Philip talks to your host Travis Chapell about how your pain makes you who you are and allows you to become the best version of yourself, how Philip got his first book deal and takes a new spin on networking. Episode Highlights: At 12 years old it was a time where he was being told what he could and couldn’t do and felt disconnected and lost but couldn’t articulate it. He went to a protestant school but was a Catholic and one class helped him to feel heard and think outside of what he was told. When Philip was 14 years old he went to NYC on his own and it was the freest he’d ever felt. The most courageous part of any change is beginning to question the current reality. After high school, he got a job and was mostly selling consumer products in Ireland. Anything other than the status quo is better if the status quo isn’t working for you. You have to be willing to stop and ask really simple questions. Judgment is the greatest block and inhibitor to growth. The number one challenge everyone faces in the world is self-worth. Where the internal disgust with ourselves comes from. Modelling has some upside but a massive dark side. Every person on earth has done things they’re ashamed about. The thing that you bring to the world is the thing you almost didn’t have yourself. You need to be in touch with the cost of doing something every day that doesn’t bring you joy. If you go and do a job that you don’t love, you have t to manage your expectations. When people do something they don’t love they put undue expectations on the other areas of their life. We’re not practising our gifts because we can’t monetize them. The practice that helps Philip gain clarity: Stop consuming information for a period of time. Create space for yourself. If you chase growth and insights and passion it often runs away from you. There are so many people living in their heads it’s becoming an epidemic. How to cultivate genuine relationships with people better. The most important relationship we have on earth is the one with ourselves. If you feel you need someone on this earth in order to be happy, that’s a flaw. People compartmentalize networking and relationships and there shouldn’t be a difference. If networking doesn’t look the same as relationship building, you’re in trouble. Scarcity is more about you than the world. They want to be authentic in their own lives and want to connect deeply with themselves and people around them. All while deepening and our methodology behind that delivers to the three. I'm so excited to share with you this week's episode, as we've done a world first here at Unconventionalists HQ! That's right, this week we're going to do a little something different. You see, although I'm always doing my best to think of new ways to serve you, I've had pretty much the same format of The Unconventionalists show for the last four years now, so I thought it was about time we experimented a little. To give you a bit of background on today's unique episode, a couple of months ago I saw that one of our former guesst on the show, Philip McKernan (#45 www.markleruste.com/episode/45 ) was about to launch his new book “One Last Talk”, and naturally, I wanted to help out. So I offered Philip to come back on the show to talk about his new book and we were scheduled to meet up in person during his tour in London. But due to last minute change of plans we weren't able to record the episode. That's when I came up with the idea of inviting him to become the first guest host of the show: To take over the reigns of the podcast so for once I could sit back, relax and enjoy the powerful lessons shared! That's why ladies and gentlemen I am so excited to share with you the very first episode of The Unconventionalists podcast guest hosted by Philip Mckernan author of “One Last Talk”. I'll be honest, this may be one of my favourite episodes on the show to date. Philip dives into what I believe in so much! And that is that your story matters and that the world needs to hear it. That your story is about you but it's not for you! That you need to see the gift you hold and that only by sharing it can you set yourself and others free. It's some seriously powerful stuff peeps, so brace yourself for some serious inspiration and motivation. If you enjoyed today's episode, I'd love for you to tag my over on social media @markleruste and let me know what you enjoyed most about today's powerful Guest Host. And do let me know if you'd like me to organise more of these in the future? And of course if you enjoy today's episode make sure to buy Philip's new book “One Last Talk”. Until then, it is a great honour and privilege to hand over the reigns for this very special edition of The Unconventionalits podcast. The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Episode #289: Philip McKernan - Relationships Move At The Speed Of Vulnerability Show Notes: Commonalities of sustaining excellence: Moments where they feel like a fraud, question themselves. They are more comfortable within those moments This allows them to bounce back quicker They seek and attract things that are outside of their normal comfort zone The Picasso example -- The courage to face the failure and own up to it "Vulnerability is the only way to truly deepen relationships" "When you say, "I don't know," it helps others feel empowered to help" Philip felt worthless at age 14. He felt isolated and alone, a burden to try and fit in. "That pain had a purpose." How to go from an isolated and alone 14 year old to a keynote speaker who moves people to tears? How to deal with skeptics? "That's okay. But, I would address it now. Couples typically wait five years too long to get counseling. Do it now." What do you do? "I create environments for people to go deep. I meet them where they're at." The story of starting this business on the side in an Irish pub. "The hardest time of my life was at the beginning, but I didn't allow lack of money to impact what I did." "What are you willing to give up to do what you want?" "I stopped making the journey about me... It was about them." Why Philip will not send his kids to college... "Spend time learning. You need to understand who you are. A classroom is not built on how to get to know who you are." The "Planes, Trains, & Automobiles" test: Kevin Bacon started his career with no lines... But kept working. "Be willing to put in the work. Run for the cab." Is "follow your passion good advice?" "Yes and no. There is a big difference between excitement and passion. I believe we all have gifts and so many people use their talents." "For you, sales was a talent, but your gift is connecting with people. To lift them, to help them, to build confidence." "We are all leaders but a lot of people lead from an inauthentic space. It's not what we do, it's how we do it." What is One Last Talk? "If you had 15 minutes left to live to share your message, what would you say? You need to share with the world to free yourself." The process creates freedom. People want to connect. This is "team deepening." Why write a book? "Everyone has the capacity to make an impact. I believe all of us carry some demons." "It's like five years of therapy in one book." "The book is by me, but it's not for me. I will never sign it." "One of the greatest burdens a child can bare is the unlived life of their parents."

Philip McKernan works with entrepreneurs and business leaders all over the world. When people are seeking clarity about their future or want to move through roadblocks, seen and unseen, they call Philip. As a speaker he has inspired and challenged the Canadian Olympic Team and The Pentagon to name a few. He helps people get clear on who they are and where they need to go. He helps them transition in their personal and professional lives so people feel aligned in all areas of life. Philip believes who and what we do ‘off the ice’ has a huge impact on our results ‘on the ice’. Philip brings new conversations to the table and spends an obscene amount of time thinking and challenging the status quo, instead of simply repackaging business & life hacking strategies. He is a philosopher, a modern day philosopher of the human experience. With a knack of getting into all sorts of scenarios – he’s caddied in golf for the President of Ireland, been chased and nearly killed by a bull elephant in Nigeria and made wine in Australia. He has traveled to 80 countries around the globe and has worked with orphans in Sri Lanka, Peru, India and Guatemala, written 4 books despite being dyslexic and his first documentary film will be released in late 2016. The film explores how the gift of giving makes up feel more worthy and alive. It also explores the science behind the impact of giving on our emotional well being, our mental health, our physiology and our business’s. Philip believes the path to a happy and fulfilling life is found through the meaning we derive in life through the WORK we do, our relationship to OTHERS and the most important relationship of all, the one with ones SELF. Guest Introduction: Philip McKernan is an inspirational speaker, writer, and filmmaker. He works with entrepreneurs and business leaders all over the world who seek clarity about their future and want to move through roadblocks. Philip is the creator of the documentary, “Give & Grow,” which explores how the gift of giving makes us feel more worthy and alive. He is also the author of several books, including “Dead Man Walking” and “Rich on Paper Poor on Life.” He has a new book called, “One Last Talk: Why Your Truth Matters and How to Speak It,” which will be released on November 6th, 2018. Interview Summary: In this interview, Philip starts by talking about how pain inspired him to get into the work that he does. He reveals the tipping point that finally pushed him to make a change, and describes how intuition guided him down this new career path. Philip discusses the common types of problems that come up in his workshops. He walks us through his approach for dealing with underlying problems such as low self-esteem, loneliness, and anger. He explains how he helps people realize their problems, understand them, and then make adjustments to course-correct. We ask Philip how his work impacts the lives of his clients. He talks about bridging the past with the present, taking ownership of our lives, and understanding our gifts vs. our talents. Philip describes how the process of becoming more authentic is ongoing throughout our lives. We then ask him how his human experience has affected and influenced his work. Philip also reveals some of the personal issues he's worked through, and what made him decide to go to therapy. He explains why we all have a moral obligation to seek help and deal with our issues. Philip discusses how going through therapy affected and changed him. He expands on the idea of self-compassion by sharing a story about a man who attended one of his workshops. He explains how our self-talk influences the course of our lives. Philip also reveals one of the most impactful moments that he's had with a client. We then shift gears and ask him to discuss the main idea behind his first book, "Dead Man Walking." He talks about mindset vs. soulset, as well as leaning into our souls and following our intuition. Next, Philip discusses how success can trap us, and what we can do to get out of it. He provides some examples of how people often over-identify with the things that they do. He then goes more in depth on the concepts of mindset and soulset. Philip goes on to talk about his second book, "Rich on Paper Poor on Life," and explains how people can recognize if they're suffering. We ask him to discuss what he did to get to the point where he feels at peace with himself. He talks about the importance of letting go of things that aren't serving you, and taking action in the absence of clarity. Finally, Philip discusses his upcoming book, "One Last Talk," including where he got the idea for it, and what he came away with after writing it. He describes the concept of One Last Talk, and explains how sharing your truth can be very cathartic and therapeutic. Philip summarizes one of the most meaningful and profound speeches that he's heard from the One Last Talk participants. He then talks about how discovering his truth has affected his life and his health. He offers advice for people looking to discover their truth. Are you really living with the people you love? Are you really happy with your life? Be honest and then make your move. “When we stop making this journey about ourselves. When we look externally and say my purpose is to impact OTHER people. When we ask ‘how do I do that to the best of my ability - without getting it perfect, so I look good along the way’. When we do THAT. Then we're ready to unleash ourselves in the world. Until then we're doing it for the wrong reasons because it's egotistically driven.” - Philip McKernan Philip McKernan is a public speaker who has been on the stage with the likes of Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, Dalai Lama and Tony Robbins. Philip speaks on and specializes in supporting people to uncover their gift and to unleash it on the world. He recently produced and created his first movie, Give and Grow, and is the founder of One Last Talk. I brought Philp onto the show to discuss how we can uncover our gifts and find our calling. The Big Takeaway - Let Parts of Your Identity Go to Uncover Your Gift According to Philip, one of the biggest things we can do to uncover our gift is to let parts of our identity. Even if we take on this exercise temporarily it shifts us towards discovering our gift. “Letting go of something temporarily is important. It's not saying that you can't come back to it. We sometimes build a jail around us. I'm not good enough. I don't have a gift. I'll do something I love when I have enough financial wealth. Before you know we've created a prison for ourselves.” The key is starting looking at all the parts of our identity that define us and start to letting go of them because as long as we’re defined by them we never truly show up. According to Philip, when we take on the journey to discover our gift, we ask the wrong questions. We ask what if it doesn’t work? That question is all about us. Philip believes that in order to uncover our gift we need to stop making it about ourselves and our ego. Rather we need to focus on the people we’re serving. “When we stop making this journey about ourselves, when we look externally and say my purpose is to impact other people how do I do that to the best of my ability” that’s when we get it right. The more we can focus on letting go of pieces of our identity, even briefly and focus on serving others, then we will begin the process of uncovering our real gift. 7 Things You’ll Learn By Listening Why Philip turned down the president of Ireland for lunch What shifted Philip to start listening to his intuition again How to connect with your body and get out of your head - because no classroom teaches us how to feel Why meditation is NOT the answer to discovering your gift or tapping into your intuition One of the most underrated things we don’t do enough The importance of letting things go and the things that externally define us The pressure we put on ourselves to find our “passion” and how it’s negatively impacting us Mentioned in the Podcast JuVan Langford Giovanni Marsico One Last Talk Robin Sharma Seth Godin Gary Vaynerchuk Give and Grow Contact Philip Website - www.philipmckernan.com Facebook

A few weeks back I attended a conference called One Last Talk hosted by Phil McKernan. The conference spanned 2 days and had quite the impact on me. The biggest takeaway I took from the event was when Phil asked the audience, who are you with your business? This question struck a chord with me and left me resonating on it past the event. In this short podcast, I digest this question and challenge you to ask yourself, who are you without your business, your career or accomplishments? I elaborate on what happens when we strip away our external validation and talk about what matters most, what's on the inside. Philip was introduced to us from a ManTalks intensive event in 2015 where he simply blew us away with his work and his message. He has also been featured on London Real with Brian Rose. Philip speaks around the world about the importance of overcoming personal obstacles, gaining clarity, and cultivating the confidence to believe in yourself. He has shared stages with some well known speakers…Steven Covey, Richard Branson, the Dalai Lama to name a few, and the feedback is generally overwhelmingly positive. Through live personal leadership experiences, he has worked with all sorts of people from housewives to Olympic athletes, TV personalities and entrepreneurs, people who’ve gone bankrupt to billionaires and everything in between, and he’s uncovered that people’s dysfunctional relationship to money and their inability to get in touch with their own deep intuition inhibits their ability to gain the authentic clarity they need to live an authentic, and meaningful life.
