Philip McKernan is an author, speaker, filmmaker, and coach, but he's more than his titles. Dr. Laura heard Philip speak a few years ago, and the overwhelming vibration of resonance spoke to her so much that she knew she would work with him in some capacity one day - which she has. Philip talks about his Brave Soul program and why he believes the path to a happy and fulfilling life is found in the meaning we derive in life, work, our relationship with others, and the most important relationship of all — the one with oneself. Dr. Laura and Philip talk about what it means to be courageous and embrace your gift, how to step into your artistry, and how our biggest gift is sometimes right next to our deepest wound. Philip shares what it means to him to be brave, and what happens when we embody our gifts in the most meaningful way possible.   What You'll Hear In This Episode: Dr. Laura talks about her own experience seeing Philip speak in a crowd of 3,000 and how it changed the course of her life. Philip talks about what bravery and courage mean to him, and how he acts as a facilitator for others to step into their own courage. This work isn't easy, and Philip has his share of people feeling resistance and strong emotions towards him, as they reveal some hard truths that may require them to take a deep look at their life. How Philp has learned to sit in the big emotions of others and hold space for them. Philip acts as a mirror so others can do the work and have tremendous breakthroughs. He shows up in a way that allows others to be unpolished and vulnerable. Philip opens up about his own challenges and vulnerabilities as someone who can channel and facilitate. How we can doubt our "gifts" and how those who often most doubt our gifts are the ones that are closest to us. As we lean into our gifts, it can remind others that they are staying the same. How talents are different than gift.  We can often protect ourselves to the point where we die with the greatest expression of our artistry still left in our souls.   Quotes: “I'm the father you didn't have. I'm the job you should have taken. I'm the life you aren't living.” — Philip “I believe we are all artists in a very deep way.” — Philip “I think deeply all of us want some type of radical simplicity in our lives.” — Philip “Most of us have families that want us to be happy. But most of us have families that don't want us to change.” - Philip “Sometimes the way I play with discovering my gift is by not asking those closest to me, but by asking other people who are further from my inner circle and may simply brush up against me in the work that I do in the world.” — Dr. Laura “Gifts always have an element of impact to them in it.” — Philip “I don't think you can fail when you lean into your gift.” — Philip   Take Dr. Laura's Free Quiz! — What's your Divine Feminine Sovereign Style? There are so many important conversations happening at the moment about the challenges facing the vet profession and the possible solutions. We love it when we hear things like: 'We have to get better at setting boundaries. We have to stop feeling so guilty. We have to value ourselves more. We have to be more kind to ourselves.' But the big question remains: HOW?! How do we do those things when we don't even understand WHY we feel guilty? Why is it that we can't value ourselves? Why are we so weird about money conversations? Why are we so hard on ourselves? This is why we've brought you Philip McKernan: to help us do the deep work. "I feel we have a moral obligation to do this work. If we choose to leave the couch, leave our bedroom and walk out into the world and interact with humans, we have a moral obligation to do the work on ourselves so that we can show up as better humans every single day." Philip McKernan is a speaker, author, coach, and ‘enlightened hooligan'. From working with the Canadian Olympic Team and at the Pentagon to writing 5 books, despite his dyslexia, the man has a lot to share. And share it he does in this conversation with his zero-bullshit cut-to-the-bone approach. We jump straight into the deep end with what being kind to yourself really looks like, and why we (with a particular focus on the vet profession) are so bad at it. Philip pressure tests some of our core beliefs around who we are, what we do, why we do it and who we do it for, and dismantles some myths around how we do them. "A lot of what I hear is that 'we're serving people, and the industry demands this,' and I go, 'yeah, I get it, but I don't get it, and I don't buy it, because at the end of the day, you still have a choice." This week, Ellie is on a mission alongside inspirational speaker, writer and filmmaker, Philip McKernan, who has worked tirelessly with entrepreneurs, business leaders, and high-level athletes, to inspire, motivate and challenge what's possible. Philip discusses the importance of intuition and our emotional landscape, the ways in which he has personally conquered setbacks in life in order to succeed, and how we can shake off the shackles of expectation in order to ensure that we show up fully for ourselves. KEY TAKEAWAYS Intuition is our naturally-given gift, steering us through life and its many decisions. it tends to be stronger during our childhood, but becomes diluted and less-trusted as we grow older. Sometimes, an outer perspective is needed. People see things in us that we often cannot see, or are unwilling to see in ourselves. Far too many people journey through life, worrying about what others might think of us at any given moment. This means that many people are living for someone else instead of themselves. The tougher conversations we have, surrounding the pains and heartaches that hold us back, are often the ones that have the most transformative effects. BEST MOMENTS 'I can deeply hear and feel what people are saying to me' 'It's about the emotional landscape rather than just the mind-set' 'If you ignore your gut, it'll always come back to haunt you' 'I believe there's a place to take the greatest pains and shine a light on them' VALUABLE RESOURCES On A Mission - https://omny.fm/shows/on-a-mission Philip McKernan - https://philipmckernan.com ABOUT THE HOST The On A Mission Podcast brings you Ellie Mckay's no holds barred chats with some of the UK's top business leaders, entrepreneurs, celebrities, athletes, top thought leaders, influencers and mindset experts. “That's what we do. We deny the parts of ourselves that are the most authentic expression of who we are in this world. It takes a ton of energy, it's exhausting, but we don't even realize how exhausting it is until we finally own up to it.” – Philip McKernan      Connect with REIN Canada REIN Canada CEO@reincanada.com Facebook Instagram Twitter Show Notes [02:08] Patrick introduces his next guest, Philip McKernan. [03:36] Philip and Patrick reconnect over the Zoom waves after several years and catch up with what Philip is up to now. [06:31] Philip expands on the type of work he and his wife Pauline are doing and how they have doubled-down in the last few years to reach as many people as possible. [08:25] The perfect referral that he never imagined – the desire for personal growth and development becoming proactive rather than reactive. The work they're doing now with clients is broadening and going to deeper to lean into that shift. [11:47] Regrets, They've Had a Few. The data collected by a hospice worker on the regrets of the dying; I wish: I'd had the courage to live true to myself and not others' expectations, I hadn't worked so hard, I had the courage to express my feelings, I had stayed in touched with friends, I'd let myself be happier. [14:12] Philip's perspective on why people choose not to be happy. [16:56] Patrick gives some context around aligning with our values and how he got tripped up by compromising his. [18:55] The magic and gold that exists when we explore our past to learn from it. Philip shares an example of this from one of their Ireland retreats and the work that results from that personal journey. [22:40] The way we show up to create an impact doesn't have to occur in epic proportions. [23:46] A rich and robust conversation between Philip and Patrick is built on the fundamental truth that finding purpose, sharing our gifts, being of contribution and creating impact in a way that aligns with who we truly are, is neither about monetization nor the money. Money is a useful outcome but the joy and truth of giving ourselves permission to connect with people from an authentic expression of who we are, is where the value lives. Listen to the examples they share of how this occurs. [38:42] Philip explains how much of what he delivers in his work from a place of intuition and how that has changed for him over the years. He also shares an observation of Patrick in the spirit of illustrating that our biggest impact usually stems from the things that come most naturally to us. [43:05] Philip delivers a beautiful example from One Last Talk of the impact available to others when we share what's within our heart. [46:27] Releasing the shame we carry and cling to, could be the single greatest opening to our personal freedom. Similarly, releasing the stubborn need to be right and making amends allows us to move forward with grace. [50:39] In this current COVID-19 reality of self-isolation and slowing down, Philip offers three questions for those who are creating this time for self reflection. 1) Who am I going to be through this crisis? 2) How am I going to remember myself as I look back? 3) How can I nurture myself during this time; how can I support myself, my family, my community, humanity? One bonus question: if the world suddenly flipped the switch back on – are you going to take up exactly where you left off or are you going to make some changes? [56:12] Shifting the stories we identify with: “this is just the way I am”, “this is the way I was raised”, “you don't understand my circumstances/my unique pain.” These are all mechanisms to shield ourselves from growth and showing up more powerfully. [60:38]: Philip offers another example which shows when we listen to our intuition and challenge the story we have been holding on to, the truth can reveal itself and blossom into self-accountability.

Philip McKernan, the modern-day philosopher of the human experience, is a guy who truly wants to get behind the curtain to help us seek real clarity and move past our roadblocks. Philip gets beyond the seen and unseen blocks in our minds to develop a clear path to our dreams. He believes the way to a happy and fulfilling life is through the meaning we derive in life through our work, our relationships, and the most important relationship of all, the relationship with one's self.   When people ask Philip what he does, how does he like to reply? If I ask his wife, Pauline, what he does, what would she say? His Mum said that even at a young age, people would come to Philip to help them sort out particular problems - why? What is the sense Philip gets when someone isn't truthful to themselves? What does he feel? Is there a difference between hearing and listening? When someone answers a question, Philip gets a sense there is more that they are not saying. How does he know? Is dissension from the right place valuable? Philip felt he wasn't heard as a child. How is he going about making sure his children feel they are honestly heard? By not showing vulnerability as parents are we being of a disservice to our kids? What story did Philip tell himself that held him back in his own life? Are we seeing and having less clarity due to distractions and the pace of life? Is our busyness leading to loneliness? Do we use other people as an excuse not to do what matters? Why our greatest gift lies right next to our deepest wounds Are people terrified of meeting themselves? How do we know what to trust in ourselves? Where is the intersection of trust and intuition? It's not just The 5 Regrets of the Dying; it's also the living with regrets. Has Philip ever faced his mortality? What scares Philip? How has Philip's One Last Talk changed in the last year? How has Philip simplified his life in the last 100 days?   LINKS   Philip McKernan website https://philipmckernan.com/about/   One Last Talk https://onelasttalk.com   Support the Show on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/themojoradioshowpodcast   Top 10 Cowbell songs of all time https://ultimateclassicrock.com/cowbell-songs/   Athletic Greens https://athleticgreens.com/us     The Mojo Radio Show Rocktober https://www.themojoradioshow.com/rocktober-2019.html   The Mojo Radio Show http://www.themojoradioshow.com   The Mojo Radio Show on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoRadioShowPodcast/     The Mojo Radio Show copyright Gary Bertwistle & Darren Robertson   Products or companies we discuss are not paid endorsements. The Art of Making Things Happen (Bluefishing) Steve Sims

Philip McKernan is an inspirational coach who works with people to help them not only align with their life goals but figure out what those goals truly are. In his work, he pushes people and supports them in a manner that encourages them to figure out for themselves who they are, where they should work, and what they should be doing. He compels them to discover the relationships and the goals that mark true happiness in their lives, and then he feeds them information back to them and gets them fired up so that they can make the changes they need to make and get truly fired up. Philip's purpose in doing so is to prevent any one of the people he helps from having regrets down the line. He says he may seem like a pain the ass sometimes because of the work he must do to bring out people's passions, but in the end, he admits that he has a substantial amount of compassion for the people he helps. One thing Philip finds surprising, though, is the fact that many people find him intimidating. He actually recently noticed a person at an event whom he had seen in the past every single year, but never had the chance to connect with. Philip went over to say hello to this man and received a surprising answer. Matt told him, “I watch everything you do, really respect your work, but you scare the shit out of me.” With that, Philip began laughing, but Matt was being serious. He addressed this sense of intimidation that people get and says: "I just don't know how to turn it on and off. There's just Philip McKernan. There's just one Philip McKernan and I think what they're really afraid of is facing their own individual truth. They're afraid of facing their own individual pain and having an opportunity to deal with it." The role that Philip has taken on of being a mirror for other people to learn about themselves has caused them to push him away in some cases. He explains that some people judge him and others outright ignore him. He says a lot of times that happens before they even give him a chance.  As part of Philip's work, he has spent a lot of time calling people out. He has what some might call a “strong BS filter” and he's not afraid to be vocal about it. He spends a lot of time listening to what people think, and a lot of time replying to them with the facts that he sees. Oftentimes, those views don't line up. Interestingly, social media plays a huge part in being dishonest with oneself, and that's something that Philip is touching on frequently with his clients, new and old. People tend to put their best foot forward, and he says those white lies can have a bigger impact--and meaning. His work is all about helping people recognize the lies they are telling themselves and then, even more importantly, helping them get down to the honest truth about what they really want in life. Philip has helped countless clients achieve the life of their dreams. You can learn more at his website, philipmckernan.com.

When Philip McKernan watched Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time, his perspective was completely and utterly changed. Indiana Jones cared immensely, but didn't care what people thought of him; he lived a wild, amazing, carefree life that was deeply connected to humanity and its history.   Since then, Philip has traveled the world embarking on his own adventures and making an impact in his own unique way. He has caddied in golf for the President of Ireland, been chased and nearly killed by a bull elephant in Nigeria, made wine in Australia, built an orphanage in Peru, written five books despite being dyslexic, and created a documentary film called Give & Grow. This film explores how the gift of giving makes us feel more worthy and alive, as well as the science behind the impact of giving on our emotional well being, our mental health, our physiology, and our businesses.   Through all of this, Philip came to believe that the path to a happy and fulfilling life is found through the meaning we derive in life through the work we do, our relationship to others, and the most important relationship of all – your relationship with yourself.   Uncover Your Gifts   Discovering these truths about himself, discovering his gift for inspiring others, wasn't easy, and it didn't all happen at once.   “My gifts have been dragged out of me,” Philip says. “I've been brought to my gifts kicking and screaming... and, unfortunately, that's what a lot of us need in order to impact the world using our gifts, as opposed to our talents.”   So many of us are lost when we try to make an impact because our God-given gifts get tied up with the inherent need to matter or the need to be seen, and we don't really understand how to separate the two anymore.   But as Philip says, “If you're tying your gift into some kind of recognition or result, you're not really allowing your gift to shine.” So take a moment to consider who you are seeking validation from today – not if you are seeking validation, but who you are seeking it from.   This need for validation may drive you to financial success, but it's never going to drive you to feel fulfilled or satisfied. And you do deserve fulfillment in your life, just as much as you deserve success!   Remember, “There's no amount of external validation on Earth that is ever, ever, ever going to be able to fill the gap if you don't matter, at some level, to yourself – and that is the most important relationship on Earth.”   --     Resources: Learn more at https://philipmckernan.com/ (https://philipmckernan.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/philip_mckernan/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/philip.mckernan Twitter: https://twitter.com/philipmckernan?lang=en Watch: Give & Grow Read: One Last Talk: Why Your Truth Matters and How to Speak It Read: Rich on Paper, Poor on Life: 3 Paths to More Meaning (And Money)   --   We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full-service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. Even successful men feel lost sometimes. They lose the clarity of who they are and where they should be heading. Philip McKernan was one of those men who's figured out the antidote. “In the absence of clarity, take action.” @PhilipMcKernan via @RustyLionAcad (Tweet this!) Phillip is an executive coach who's worked with clients ranging from the Canadian Olympic team to the Pentagon. He's also a speaker who's shared stages with men like the Dalai Lama and Richard Branson. Beyond that, he's a dyslexic Irishman who flunked his way through school and has managed to become an author and filmmaker despite the challenges of dyslexia. His journey of action started in an orphanage about a dozen years ago when he realized he'd been wearing a mask in the business world. In an unplanned stop at a Sri Lankan orphanage, he realized he had nothing to hide behind. No gifts to give the children, no phrase books to try to communicate with them. Only himself. And that's what he decided to give. Without the masks he'd been wearing in the business world. “We have the ability to impact people, not by the checks that we write, but by the sheer gift we have in our essence.” – Philip McKernan By giving himself in that orphanage, he found himself. “I allowed them to feel that they mattered even for a day, even for a moment, even for an hour,” Philip tells me in this episode. “Unbeknownst to myself I started to realize I matter too.” And with that knowledge, he decided to take action. He moved out of his native Ireland to Canada and has been helping other people find themselves, find their gifts, ever since. He most recently did that by completing a documentary called “Give and Grow,” which you can watch by clicking here. The film shows how successful men and women find themselves by giving their core away in service. Taking action like that, he said, is what helps many people find their talents – what he describes as passions deepened tenfold. Click play in the player above to hear Philip's remarkable story of turning from a lost dyslexic to a man who helps others find their gifts and take action. He helps people find or reconnect to what it is they truly love by aligning with their own intuition instead of suppressing it for the expectations of others and appeasement of a misleading mindset."We will literally live entire existences, build entire empires, and build entire businesses because we are seeking the validation of people around us -- and most people would be in complete denial of that reality." -Philip McKernanThe Cheat Sheet:If you're not living a life you love, it's time to have a tough conversation with yourself. How will an intuitive "soulset" serve you beyond the limitations of an intellectually driven (and inauthentic) mindset? What is intuition, and does it have a place in business? Why do we build webs of ever-increasing complexity around ourselves? It takes courage to step away from something that's not working -- but it's almost always worth it.And so much more...Show notes at http://theartofcharm.com/podcast-episodes/philip-mckernan-intuitive-clarity-episode-495/HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!If you dig the show, please subscribe in iTunes and write us a review!
