Label: Casablanca 884Year: 1977Condition: MPrice: $20.00Listening to this, it's easy to see how Summer became the queen of disco in the late 1970s, helped enormously by great material and by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte's distinctive techno arrangements. By the way, this is the relatively rare first pressing of Casablanca 884, which labels "I Feel Love" as the B side. And it's true! Originally, the record company plugged "Can't We Just..." as the A side, and it did chart for a few weeks on the Black/RnB Singles chart. Soon, however, station programmers began plugging "I Feel Love," and it became one of Summer's earliest Top 10 hits. Casablanca shortly re-pressed the single showing "Side A" for "I Feel Love." The A side ("Can't We...") is edited from a 4:25 album track. Note: This beautiful 45 record has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl (styrene), Audio).

Donna Summer is famous for her disco and pop career, but before she hit the big time she was already an accomplished singer who sang in musicals, folk opera and in the studio as a session musician. The Boston-born singer started out in a rock band before moving to central Europe to make a living. She was singing in the musical ‘Hair' in Munich when she came to the attention of Moroder's writing partner Pete Belotte. Like most of Summer's early disco hits, I Feel Love was written and produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. She was the queen of disco; they were an unstoppable pop music force. Together, Donna Summer and Stock Aitken Waterman made some of their best music together. In this look at the first single from the Another Place And Time album, we chart Donna's landmark run of hits in the 1970s and difficult transition into the 1980s thanks to a deal with Geffen Records that saw her taken away from the songwriting and production team of Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, with whom she'd collaborated on classics like "Love To Love You Baby", "I Feel Love" and "Hot Stuff". Following a commercially underappreciated couple of albums, Donna's union with SAW resulted in her greatest success in years and another trans-Atlantic smash for the Hit Factory with the joyous lead single "This Time I Know It's For Real". We hear from Matt Aitken, Dee Lewis and Pete Hammond about working with Donna on the album, which is regarded by fans as a high point in SAW's career, and David Howells talks about the distinctive front cover image that caused waves in the US. Author of Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop and host of The Ringer podcast Black Girl Songbook, Danyel Smith, joins DJ Louie to explore the work, impact and legacy of the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer. Louie and Danyel begin with Donna's early life as the eccentric Black girl in her Boston community during the 1950s and ‘60s, her move to Germany in 1968 to star in the musical Hair which eventually led to a star-crossed meeting with producers Giorgio Morodor and Pete Bellotte who would go on to be her primary collaborators, and their breakthrough with the radically orgasmic disco anthem “Love to Love You Baby” in 1975. Louie and Danyel then cover Donna, Giorgio and Pete's ambitious run of concept albums through the mid ‘70s, their seismic innovations on 1977's “I Feel Love”, considered the first electronic dance song, Donna's status as the poster child for both the music and aesthetics of the disco movement thanks in part to her role in the film Thank God It's Friday and its luscious Oscar-winning smash “Last Dance”, her magnum opus, 1979's Bad Girls which set the template for the modern pop event album, and how she managed to outrun the sudden decline of disco thanks to 1983's economical new-wave anthem “She Works Hard for the Money”. They conclude with Donna's commercial decline in the latter 1980s, her Born-Again Christianity and controversial statements about the AIDS Epidemic and the gay community, her absolutely massive impact on the sound and look of pop stardom and how her legacy- and that of the movement she defined- has evolved over time. Finally, Louie and Danyel rank Donna Summer in the official Pop Pantheon. Rosie Perez talks about her starring role in the new series Now & Then, plus, her journey from dancer to Oscar-nominated actor. Donna Summer's former producer Pete Bellotte pays tribute to the Queen of Disco on the 10th anniversary of her death. Writer Liz Howard reads a poem from her latest collection, Letters in a Bruised Cosmos, which is shortlisted for the 2022 Griffin Poetry Prize. Radiohead's Thom Yorke and artist Stanley Donwood talk about the band's new book and virtual exhibition, which dive into the symbiotic relationship between sound and art in the Radiohead universe.
From his beginnings working as an assistant for Giorgio Moroder to joining forces with him and Donna Summer to write and produce her biggest hits, Pete Bellotte is partly responsible for the soundtrack to so many peoples lives including "I Feel Love" , "Love To Love You Baby" and "Hot Stuff". Here he talks about his beginnings in a group which led him to moving to Germany where his life changed forever. Alongside the many albums with Donna he has written and produced for Elton John, Janet Jackson and the disco classic "Giving Up Giving In' by The Three Degrees. Such a privilege to spend time with him after us initially meeting up a while ago and just the most wonderful man with a love of music and the process of making it that is still as strong today as it ever was. Jessie Ware is a singer, songwriter and podcaster. Her latest, critically acclaimed, album, What's Your Pleasure?, draws inspiration from soul, funk, boogie, and disco - and, notably, the work of the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer. Jessie joins Matthew Parris and Pete Bellotte, co-producer and co-writer of many of Donna Summer's biggest hits - I Feel Love, Love to Love You Baby, and Hot Stuff, among others - to explore the life and work of her musical heroine. Jessie, Pete and Matthew discuss Donna's Protean vocal abilities, her eventful childhood and how post-war Munich provided the perfect environment to create some of disco's most momentous hits. Pete reveals how a three-minute demo of Love to Love You Baby became a seventeen-minute breakout hit and together they explore why disco has endured despite an early backlash. Jessie ponders whether life has changed for a woman in the music industry and reflects on Donna's personal legacy. With additional contributions from Danyel Smith, author of Shine Bright: A Personal History of Black Women in Pop (published Spring 2021). Produced in Bristol by Camellia Sinclair
Donna Summer was a hitmaker for two decades and a dancefloor deity for more than three. Her collaborations with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte were formative in dance, electronic and rock music, influencing everyone from David Bowie and Blondie to Madonna and Moby. But the rock establishment was stinting in its appreciation—whether at Comiskey Park in 1979, or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the 2000s. This month, we examine how Summer became the Queen of Disco…and how she transcended that role altogether. Email: hitparade@slate.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
