This week's show is constructed a little differently. Our guest hangout is only about as half as long as we normally have because he was ON HIS LUNCH BREAK, but we put together some other things that made this show its "normal length." OUR GUEST... OH GOODNESS, what an honor for the guys this week to talk to the former holder for the Minnesota Golden Gopher football team (2017-2020), and 5-time cancer survivor, Casey O'Brien! Casey was first diagnosed with cancer when he was 13 and was told that contact sports were now out of the question because of the knee reconstruction he had to go through to survive! He talks about the process of convincing his doctors to let him play, as well as trying to find a college that would sign off on him playing in a game if the situation presented itself. Casey also talks about the mental side of going through, yet again, another cancer diagnosis, along with who was there for him through the fights. He talks about what he likes to do for fun, what he does now, and what Coach PJ Fleck is like, on and off the field!Another thing he talks about is the hospital he spent A LOT of time in, during his times as a patient! He talks about what it meant to him to be there, and THEN be able to accomplish what he has since being a patient there. It drove him to start a Go Fund Me page to raise $1 million to transform the infusion center and patient/family experience within the Journey Clinic at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital. WHAT A GREAT CAUSE! If you would like to donate, PLEASE DO, and go to https://crowdfund.umn.edu/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.personalCampaign&participantID=1194 to donate! The guys want to bring Casey back on and chat about how things are going with raising the money, as well as catching up with this great person! The Lounge wishes him all the best! For the rest of the show, the guys decided they needed to Crack-a-Six-Pack! They have some things weighing on them, so they need to vent! Then, Little Matt drops a Let's Chat! on them that is QUITE the topic! It's not Farting Tree Furniture, but it's great! The show, overall, is NOTHING if it weren't for Casey O'Brien! He was FABULOUS! SO, sit back, relax & #grabalisten of the hang out with Casey O'Brien!

This is a bit of a wildcard episode, which I've been thinking about doing for a long time, but only now have I got my sh*t together (i.e. research) and have made it into a thing. We spoke about myth recently, and the value of myth in our every day lives, whether it's giving us courage and self-belief to take on life's obstacles, to giving us a greater sense of meaning and belonging while we're on this watery rock. Now, I want to get more into the creative side of myth, and have some fun with some of the archetypal characters we meet in mythology and tie in some pop-psychology, and personality type stuff, just because this is the Creative Introvert ;) The Plan: I'll tell you about a selection of gods and goddesses who I've been learning about and how they can inspire us creatively. I'll also be sharing my Myers-briggs analysis of each of these legendary figures - actually its not an analysis, I'm not qualified for that and they aren't people like you and I are people, so that wouldn't work. But I did find a way to link the 8 types of introvert (INFP, INTJ, INFJ etc) to each of the gods and goddesses, just for fun. So if you like you can match your personality type to the corresponding god or goddess, or not - it's just one way to explore these archetypes. You'll most likely find that you identify with 2 or 3 of them, or more. And if you would like to argue with my typing PLEASE DO, I would enjoy that (Mercury in Aries) and so feel free to email me your thoughts: hello@thecreativeintrovetr.com You'll also be able to download a free PDF guide to all of these gods + goddesses of creativity, summarising the types and giving you tips for working with each archetype at: http://thecreativeintrovert.com/gods If you're interested in booking an astrology reading, you can find out more here: https://thecreativeintrovert.com/astrology Subscribe to Cat's channel so you can always stay up to date on her latest free videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeqiJ1yNr3178b-VIY2WCmQ?sub_confirmation=1 Say hi to Cat on social: Instagram: http://instagram.com/creativeintro Twitter: http://twitter.com/creativeintro SUPPORT THE SHOW: https://www.patreon.com/creativeintro #TheCreativeIntrovert
Sponsored by Techmeme Ride Home podcast: pythonbytes.fm/ride Special guest: Steve Dower - @zooba Brian #1: Making Enums (as always, arguably) more Pythonic “I hate enums” Harry Percival Hilarious look at why enums are frustrating in Python and a semi-reasonable workaround to make them usable. Problems with enums of strings: Can’t directly compare enum elements with the values Having to use .value is dumb. Can’t do random choice of enum values Can’t convert directly to a list of values If you use IntEnum instead of Enum and use integer values instead of strings, it kinda works better. Making your own StringEnum also is better, but still doesn’t allow comparison. Solution: class BRAIN(str, Enum): SMALL = 'small' MEDIUM = 'medium' GALAXY = 'galaxy' def __str__(self) -> str: return str.__str__(self) Derive from both str and Enum, and add a *__str(self)__* method. Fixes everything except random.choice(). One optimization that he pointed out to me was LOAD/CALL_METHOD opcodes, an idea first originated in PyPy.” There is a patch that implements this optimization Based on: LOAD_ATTR stores in its cache a pointer to the type of the object it works with, its tp_version_tag, and a hint for PyDict_GetItemHint. When we have a cache hit, LOAD_ATTR becomes super fast, since it only needs to lookup key/value in type's dict by a known offset (the real code is a bit more complex, to handle all edge cases of descriptor protocol etc). Be careful of race conditions Be atomic Michael #5: Ideas for 5x faster CPython Twitter post by Anthony Shaw calling attention to roadmap by Mark Shannon Implementation plan for speeding up CPython: The overall aim is to speed up CPython by a factor of (approximately) five. We aim to do this in four distinct stages, each stage increasing the speed of CPython by (approximately) 50%: 1.5**4 ≈ 5 Each stage will be targeted at a separate release of CPython. Stage 1 -- Python 3.10: The key improvement for 3.10 will be an adaptive, specializing interpreter. The interpreter will adapt to types and values during execution, exploiting type stability in the program, without needing runtime code generation. Stage 2 -- Python 3.11: Improved performance for integers of less than one machine word. Faster calls and returns, through better handling of frames. Better object memory layout and reduced memory management overhead. Stage 3 -- Python 3.12 (requires runtime code generation): Simple "JIT" compiler for small regions. Stage 4 -- Python 3.13 (requires runtime code generation): Extend regions for compilation. Enhance compiler to generate superior machine code. Wild conversation over here. One excerpt, from Larry Hastings: Speaking as the Gilectomy guy: borrowed references are evil. The definition of the valid lifetime of a borrowed reference doesn't exist, because they are a hack (baked into the API!) that we mostly "get away with" just because of the GIL. If I still had wishes left on my monkey's paw I'd wish them away (1). This week we go balls deep into grandma's gone wild or nannicide as we are calling it. Follow us down the rabbit hole that is Dorothea Puente and her house of horrors. The early 80's were an absolute time of chaos for Dorothea puente. Was she the world's worst land lady or the best in the world at getting caught for social security fraud?! We might never know...or will we? . . Also let's journey to Russia where Tamara Samsonova's diary not only details all of her murders, but also shows up that diaries are way more fun when they're kept in 3 different languages. Voices or nah? Don't audit us CIA, we're just a bunch of basic bunnies talking about murder, nothing to see here. . . Join us as we react to one of the most moving and frustrating docuseries' we've ever seen, Atlanta's Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children. Amanda and Sam try to navigate some really big and really terrible feelings surrounding these cases, all while breaking down the murder and disappearance of 30 people between the years of 1979-1981. . In spite of not being actually convicted of 27 of the murders, they were still pinned on Wayne Williams, and 40 years later he is still in prison and still the only suspect that was ever properly interrogated. We know now, this never should have been the case. This documentary was hard. It was eye opening. And rightfully, it causes a lot of anger and still is. The documentary can be found on HBO Max, A really great podcast following the same murders is Atlanta Monster , which is also so wonderfully done and so informative. We have the honor of hearing from Dr. Sheehan Fisher about new fathers, the transitions they may go through when a baby comes along, as well as the challenges and strengths that they may experience. There are quite a few gems in our talk today, one of which is how the role of fatherhood is changing and adapting to the times…AND thoughts about navigating that. Dr. Fisher’s take on these transitions is not to be missed. I’m sure you’ll want to share this with the fathers, men and partners of men in your life. PLEASE DO! We also discuss: - The spectrum of mood changes that fathers might experience postpartum, such as depression, anxiety, anger - how it affects them, what they might experience - what their partners might notice - Looking at the family as a system and how family members affect each other - What can they do? What kinds of support or therapy, available? - Coping suggestions - hopeful messages for fathers Connect with Dr. Fisher: Twitter: @SheehanDFisher Facebook: @SheehanDFisher Instagram: @DrChefSheehan Dr. Sheehan Fisher is a clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, with an appointment at Lurie Children’s Hospital. His research and clinical interests focus on perinatal mental health, with a subspecialty in father’s mental health and role in the family. His aim is to understand the mechanisms that place mothers and fathers at risk for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and the effect of both parents' mental health on infant health outcomes. Hotel Sanctuary in MPLS This week we got to connect with Rosemary, who is an organizer in Minneapolis, about the liberation of a former Sheraton Hotel in that city and its slow but steady transformation into something that is becoming so much more than a housing cooperative. They speak about how this resocialization came to happen, some of the circumstances involved, about how this is a very deep collaboration between un-housed folks in Minneapolis and people involved in doing care work, the power of George Floyd who was profoundly involved in doing that same kind of care work with un-housed people, and many many more topics. Check out their new website up at SanctuaryHotel.org and their fundraiser at GoFundMe.com/f/SanctuaryHotel . ... . .. In this episode, you'll also hear a statement by anarchist prisoners, Comrade Malik and Sean Swain. We invite you to stay tuned for mid-week as we release a podcast special for the June 11th day of solidarity with Marius Mason and longterm anarchist prisoners. We hope to feature the voice of a longtime supporter of Marius with updates on his case, and that of anarchist prisoner, anon hacker and Federal Grand Jury resistor, Jeremy Hammond. More about June 11th on June11.org. Transcription: Comrade Malik Transcription: Rosemary PDF (unimposed) Zine (imposed PDF) . ... . .. Further resources from Rosemary: Sharing from the Minneapolis Sanctuary Hotel FedBook page, hoping a website and crowdfunding link will be up soon so stay tuned! Greetings community. We hope this long post finds you as safe and well as is possible during a righteous uprising. We wanted to provide you some updates and opportunities to plug in. The Minneapolis Sanctuary Hotel is a community-led sanctuary space for over 200 displaced and homeless people who needed safety from the military occupation that occurred following the murder of George Floyd. We center values of autonomy, harm reduction, community care, mutual aid, and abolition. 1. First! This page, started as a space to boost all kinds of different work related to COVID, homelessness, and community care, is transitioning to become the Minneapolis Sanctuary Hotel Facebook page. Look for changing name and photos shortly! 2. We are overwhelmed with support. This is a good problem to have but we've had to rapidly scale up our infrastructure to meet the needs. Here are some ways to plug in: > If you are media with interview or press release requests, please email: sanctuaryhotelmedia@gmail.com > If you are a restaurant, catering company, or are interested in providing hot meals, please contact Kimberly at 612-203-2779 > If you are a new volunteer looking to get connected or are a previous volunteer with a special skill set we don't know about, please fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScy9VNQ1Xnamf6pUC-kphgXrnI3OwakUucW4YAfYNVz7o5cBg/viewform 3. A few boundaries to set for resident safety, capacity, and COVID reasons: > Please DO NOT show up at the sanctuary hotel if you are not signed up to work a shift. > Please NO MORE *non-perishable food* donations. > Please DO wear a mask when on-site Please continue to watch this space for more updates as we continue to learn and grow in the work of building a sanctuary. . ... . .. Call for vigils on 6/7/2020 for fallen comrades From anarchist BIPOC & accomplices: Since the George Floyd rebellions began on May 26 2020, following his horrific murder by police, at least a dozen more lives have been taken by state and vigilante violence in the struggle for Black freedom. We wish to honor them by making space to say their names, commemorate their lives, and celebrate our own resistance. By acknowledging the risk we all take when we move into the streets, we remember the martyred and continue to fight for the living. Calling for vigils everywhere, Sunday 6/7 at sundown. . ... . .. Are you ready to eliminate distractions that are negatively affecting your productivity? Are you bogged down and feeling defeated? Unable to focus? In this episode of Agent Rise, I’m going to give you simple tools to help increase your efficiency and eliminate distractions. What apps are running in your background? Kelly Shipp, one of my ‘Risers of the Month’, introduced me to this analogy. She said she felt like she was a phone, and had all of these apps running in the background that were bogging her down and distracting her, leaving her feeling defeated. You don’t have to feel like this. Feeling defeated and overwhelmed will keep you from performing at your best. You need to begin to eliminate the things that are distracting you—so what does that look like? Eliminate distractions by delegating One of the easiest things you can do to delegate distractions? Hire a transaction coordinator. I’m not advocating hiring a friend, family member, or someone inexperienced. Hire up. Hire someone who knows the field, has systems and processes in place and does the job better than you. It’s much easier to hand off the work to someone who knows what they’re doing. The right person for the job will help ease your stress and workload and improve efficiency. It is an investment for your clients and will make a night and day difference. Keep listening as I talk about my personal experience hiring a transaction coordinator and the other things you can begin to delegate. Overcome the “Disease to Please” Do you deal with stress and anxiety related to performance? Are you constantly feeling like a failure if you can’t deliver what a client is looking for? If you worry that a client will never use you again or won’t refer people to you—let it go. You’ve done your best and you need to be confident in that. You can’t let other people dictate the way you feel about yourself. I had a client who made it his personal business to make my life a living hell. I worked my tail off for him—I even sold their house for more than they asked for. I could never figure out why he decided to attack me. But it deeply hurt me and I felt so defeated. What did I do to overcome the anxiety and feeling of defeat that the client dredged up? Listen to find out! What is preventing you from feeling alive? Sometimes, the issue that is running in the background goes deeper than distracting tasks. Have you been deeply wounded? Is there something in your past that you need to overcome? Past hurt that you’ve buried doesn’t stay buried, and it will affect your life. Is something in your life preventing you from being the person God designed you to be? I would love to chat with you. You are capable of so much more when you let go of your struggles. It’s time to overcome the lies you’re letting yourself believe. Get down to the root of your distractions and focus. What apps are running in your background? What do you need to do to turn them off? Fanpals Mel, Liz, and Lauren discuss the apocalypse in their first themed episode. Play along with new segments This, That, Or the Other and Snog/Marry/BFF, where your fanpals try to choose which awful end-of-the-world scenario they'd rather live in, and decide whether Thomas from the Maze Runner would make a better life partner than Old Alice. Stick around for Liz's chat with Adron Buske of the Fictitious podcast, which covers everything from taking comfort from apocalyptic and dystopian fiction, to whether or not our current political situation will eventually make for good entertainment. If you find yourself wanting to talk back, PLEASE DO! Comment here, or go to keysmashblog.com and leave a comment on the supplemental post for this episode.
Fanpals Lauren, Liz, and Mel host their very first guest that isn't a personal friend: Emma Grant! This week your fanpals welcome Mel's bestie Steph as a guest, and talk about all the fictional stuff that makes them cry. Because it's totally normal to be attached to people and things that aren't real.
Your fanpals Lauren and Liz (and eventually Mel!) host Lauren's NRLP Renee for a chat about fic diving, crafting a convention for 90s boybands, and not waiting an appropriate amount of time before meeting internet friends in person. Fanpals Liz and Mel are LIVE from San Diego Comic-Con. Well, they were live when they were recording. You get the idea. We recorded while we were at the convention - hence some of the wonky audio - and then did a post-con chat with guest Renee, Liz's SDCC roommate and writer for Black Nerd Problems. Your Fanpals Mel (who has very hard lines when it comes to the media she consumes), Liz (who barely has any lines when it comes to the media she consumes), and Lauren (who doesn't really consume much media at all) talk about the tropes and character dynamics that suck them into a fandom. There are digressions into "nopes," and some teases for future episodes. If you find yourself wanting to talk back, PLEASE DO! Comment here, or go to keysmashblog.com and leave a comment on the supplemental post.
Welcome back to Fanpals! Download Episode! Lovely radicals! Let me bring some sunshine into your lives: In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I talk to Fiona Sutherland from Melbourne, Australia. Fiona is the Director of "Body Positive Australia" which offers therapy, yoga and retreats to the community and also of "The Mindful Dietitian" which offers mindfulness and client-centered practice, training opportunities and information, specifically to dietitians worldwide. Fiona is a specialist in Eating Disorders (mostly Binge Eating Disorder), eating behavior and body image. Fiona has recently been appointed to the Australia & New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders Board, where she aims to strengthen the voice for ED recovery and Health at Every Size. She is a professional kid-wrangler (of two boys, aged 5 & 7) and she is currently half-way through her yoga teacher training. She is passionate about how we can help everyone – in every body! – live in peace within this very brainwashed diet-culture. You will hear Fiona share: – Why she thinks it’s never worth to sacrifice birthday cake to a thinness-dream – What makes scales the worst device to have around – What she loves to do to scales and what she promises to do if I smash my elliptical – Why compulsive exercise can cost us the experience of actually truly fulfilled needs – How she proves why you, me and everyone else is inherently worthy; without pursuing our ideas of perfection (i.e. the need to be busy, the need to pursue weight-loss, the need to be fit, etc.) – What she learned about bodies when she was a kid – Why she describes her experience as a child as "thin-xiety" – How her mother’s dieting behavior bewildered her – What traumatic memories she has of the time when she went to weight-loss group with her mother – How her sister got treated for being in a larger body – Why all of these experiences made her angry enough to DO something about the toxicity of diet-culture – How we get tricked by society’s messages about weight and weight-loss that "there is a magic bullet" and how this sets us up for falling into the trap that everything "can be fixed almost instantly" – Why food-restriction and any attempts at dieting are so harmful and have ZERO to do with health – Why our internalized diet-mentality and weight-obsession can burn a whole into our self-worth – Why any sort of diet-recovery, be it for lifelong dieters, disordered eaters or people with eating disorders, is a slow process with lots of tiny steps – Why our belief that we master recovery success either instantly or just not try it at all is coming from the voice of the eating disorder – What little steps could look like, in terms of eating or exercising – Why our judgment of our behaviors (emotional eating, for example) is what creates the real problem and how we can start to become more observing and less judgmental about ourselves – What the key element is to a smoother recovery process – How she would raise ME if I had been her child (and what her goals are for her own children) – What her top tips are to avoid passing our body image struggles on to our children – What "The Body Positive Australia"’s mission is and what kind of services they offer – How they help make dietitians and other health professionals aware of the long-term harm of dieting and of weight-discrimination – Why her business partner’s "Fat Yoga" classes are taking off like crazy – What they continuously do to change the harmful paradigm of weight-loss-idealization and diet-culture... ... Download Episode! Lovely radicals! In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I talk to Thom Rutledge from Nashville. Thom is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, psychotherapist, author and speaker, who has experienced both sides of the therapeutic relationship; as a clinician and as a client. He blends his personal recovery from depression, addiction and excessive self-criticism with 30 years of professional experience to guide his clients, readers, and audiences from self-judgment and perfectionism toward genuine self-compassion. He’s the author of several books like "Embracing Fear", "Earning Your Own Respect" and "The Greater Possibilities“, and he has co-written "Life Without ED" (ED meaning Eating Disorder) with Jenni Schaefer. Thom’s trademark sense of humor, a down-to-earth practicality, and his own compassion are the common threads than run through his unique brand of psychology. Thom will tell us: – How contributing to a bestseller about eating disorders led to him specializing in eating disorder treatment – How he as a recovering alcoholic (who’s been sober for 30 years) can relate to people with eating disorders and disordered eating – Where he sees the familiarity between eating disorders and alcoholism – Why eating disorders are often more difficult to recover from than alcohol addiction – Why he asks his clients about their relationship to fear – Why there often are existential fears underneath eating issues – What his intra-personal therapy model consists of – Why trust is such a crucial part of eating disorder therapy – How we can separate our fear voice (inner Gremlin/inner bully) from our healthy voice (recovery voice) – Why it is normal to often have different feelings or even opinions about things in life – How clever our inner Gremlins are and how they trick us – How this inner Gremlin actually manages to scare us into paralysis – Why the inner Gremlin is a synonym for catastrophic thinking – Why we should never expect to be able to fully rid ourselves of those inner bullies – Why we can only learn to deal with them when we first start to listen to what it actually says – Why it helps to ask ourselves how much of what this inner Gremlin predicts has ever really happened – What we are really afraid of when we say "we are afraid of weight-gain" – How he specifically works with my example – Why rejecting and disobeying the inner Gremlin is the way to recovery – Why in healing from bad body image and disordered eating it often gets worse before it gets better – Why, when we have believed our inner Gremlin for decades, it often feels like shedding our old identity when we are on the way to becoming our true selves – Why the inner Gremlin doesn’t get to use the "I" pronoun – How to strengthen our inner, true recovery voice – How we can become the real decision-makers in our own life – How community and support play a pivotal role for our mental health – Why he thinks the universe purposely designed us to be "forgetting machines"... ... Download Episode! Lovely radicals... it's podcast time! In today's episode of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, I talk to Melissa Toler, from Maryland, close to Washington DC. She is a certified health and wellness coach, speaker and writer, with a background as a pharmacist who offers a non-diet, weight-neutral health approach, and her goal is to help women connect the dots between our culture’s ridiculous beauty standards and our personal struggle with self-acceptance. She helps women unlearn the toxic messages and behaviors from lifelong dieting so they can learn a new set of skills and live a life free from obsession and self-loathing. Having a 25-year history with dieting herself, she knows personally what it means to be stuck in the diet-binge-cycle. She came to sanity a few years ago, and she says it was one of the best decisions she has ever made. I believe her. Melissa also teaches workshops and courses to help people on the path to improving their body image. We will all get some of here awesomeness in this episode! Listen to Melissa talk about: – Where she got the message that her body was "not good enough" – What the moment was where she internalized the belief that she needed to change her body – Why she got stuck in this well-known hell of weight-suppression, dieting and overexercising for so long – What it was that made her wake up and learn to listen to her own body again – What helped her to question her own thinking and see behind the mechanism of diet-culture and how much money is being made by making women feel "less than" – Why it literally pays off to be hypercritical of media’s, TV’s and magazines’ messages – Why by buying beauty/women’s magazines and diet books/products, we vote "yes" to our oppression with our own money – Why we all need other people to help wake us up to what we have gotten so used to that we never stop to question it – Why it is always a good idea to be suspicious of the words "body positive" or "empowered woman", especially as it is being viciously co-opted by diet-culture these days – What TRUE empowerment means – What proved to be most helpful on her way out of constant dieting – How she helps women re-connect to their true selves – How we can learn and implement the skill of self-compassion even when it sounds weird at first – How we can start questioning our thoughts with curiosity instead of judgment – How to decode what’s behind it when the "urge" to go on a diet comes up – How we can stop the diet-thoughts from influencing our decisions – How she helps her clients see where they have been mislead into "false" thinking about themselves being "not good enough", and who profits off of that – How much precious time in a person’s life can literally be wasted by getting stuck in diet-land, being preoccupied by weight-loss, body-negativity and obsession – Why a person's size never tells us anything about their health and the dangers of equating "thin" to "healthy" – Why it is important to understand the sinister mechanism of diet-culture and how this can help us stepping out of old beliefs – Why stepping out of diet culture is a truly radical move... ...
