Anna Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, gained notoriety for posing as a wealthy German heiress to infiltrate herself in New York's social elite. For years, she used her self-proclaimed wealth to scam and defraud some of the city's biggest socialites, prominent banks and high-end hotels in New York City. She was arrested in 2017 and convicted of grand larceny in the first, second third degree as well as theft of services. After serving her time and being released from prison, she was detained by ICE for violating the terms of her VISA. She remains on house arrest today while she fights her deportation, but you would never know - she has a large social media following, a podcast, is filming a reality show, and recently appeared on Dancing with the Stars (wearing her ankle monitor). This is the true story of Anna Delvey. Rachel DeLoache Williams' Vanity Fair Article My Friend Anna by Rachel DeLoache Williams Click here to join our Patreon. pWotD Episode 2696: Anna Sorokin Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 245,809 views on Wednesday, 18 September 2024 our article of the day is Anna Sorokin.Anna Sorokin (Russian: Анна Сорокина; born January 23, 1991), also known as Anna Delvey, is a con artist and fraudster who posed as a wealthy heiress to access upper-class New York social and art scenes from 2013 to 2017.Born to working-class parents in the Soviet Union (now Russia), Sorokin emigrated from Russia to Germany with her family at the age of 16 in 2007. In 2011, she left Germany to live in London and Paris before relocating to New York City in 2013, where she interned for the French fashion magazine Purple. Sorokin conceived of a private members' club and arts foundation, which included leasing a large building to feature pop-up shops and exhibitions by notable artists she met while interning. She later created fake financial documents to substantiate her claims of having a multi-million-euro trust fund, and forged multiple wire transfer confirmations. Sorokin used these documents, as well as fraudulent checks, to trick banks, acquaintances, and realtors into paying out cash and granting large loans without collateral. She used this to fund her lavish lifestyle, including residencies in multiple upscale hotels. Between 2013 and 2017, Sorokin defrauded and deceived major financial institutions, banks, hotels, and individuals out of $275,000.In 2017, the NYPD arrested Sorokin in a sting operation with the help of her former friend, Rachel DeLoache Williams, who accused Sorokin of defrauding her of $62,000. In 2019, a New York state court convicted Sorokin of attempted grand larceny, larceny in the second degree, and theft of services, and she was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison. After serving two years, she was remanded into the custody of U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation to Germany. On 5 October 2022, Sorokin was granted a $10,000 bail bond and released from prison. Sorokin's story gained publicity when Williams wrote a lengthy article in Vanity Fair about her experiences with Sorokin in 2018. She expanded on the story in her 2019 book My Friend Anna. The same year, journalist Jessica Pressler wrote an article for New York about Sorokin's life as a socialite; Netflix paid Sorokin $320,000 for the rights to her story and developed it into the 2022 miniseries Inventing Anna. Sorokin's life story has been the subject of multiple other television shows, interviews, podcasts, and theater productions. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:56 UTC on Thursday, 19 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Anna Sorokin on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

On the show today… Rachel DeLoache Williams is suing Netflix for how she was portrayed in their hit series Inventing Anna, based on the life of notorious scammer Anna Delvey. Rachel claims that while Netflix concealed details of other players in the real-life story, her real life was almost used in full. But there's an extra twist to this story. Plus, Sheri Easterling and Yung Gravy are the latest names dominating celebrity gossip circles, but the real fallout is hitting Sheri's famous daughter Addison Rae the hardest. From online family drama and TikTok gossip, here's everything you need to know. And Meghan Markle's new interview with The Cut has ignited a wave of backlash and we're pretty sure we know exactly what triggered it. She's also been called a liar for some of the statements made in the piece but once you unravel what she actually said, it's clear some of her words have been taken out of context. We'll hear how Anna used classic narcissistic tactics to get close to Rachel, and how a friendship can mask the “red flags” we're used to seeing in a romantic relationship. Rachel DeLoache Williams was a small town girl, living her dream in New York City as a photo editor at Vanity Fair, when she became the target for notorious con-artist Anna Delvey. Rachel's empathy was weaponized by the fake German heiress, who betrayed her friendship and left her with a $62,000 credit card debt after a vacation to Morocco. Today we're looking at the female con artist. Have you watched Inventing Anna, the series about Anna Sorokin who duped New York's banks, hotels and high society into believing she was a multi-millionaire heiress? Or The Dropout, about Silicon Valley entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes who claimed she had invented a technology that could test for diseases with just a pinprick of blood? Their cases have inspired countless TV series, movies, podcasts, books and even plays. But why are they so popular and what does it say about us as consumers of these tales? We explore what role their gender played in achieving their deceit and the coverage they've received. We'll also discuss the history, psychology and cultural depictions of the female con artist, and hear from a woman who Anna Sorokin left with a bill for $62,000. We're joined by Sara O'Brien, senior technology reporter at CNN Business; Vicky Baker, BBC journalist; Kathryn Claire Higgins, media scholar at LSE; Dr Nicola Harding, criminologist at Lancaster University; Maria Konnikova, author of The Confidence Game; Alice Porter, journalist; Tori Telfar, author of Confident Women; and Rachel deLoache Williams, author of My Friend Anna. Presenter: Emma Barnett Producer: Lucy Wai Editor: Beverley Purcell

Marcus Yam, LA Times foreign correspondent and photojournalist, is in Ukraine. He describes the dangers and importance of the job, how eerie Kyiv is right now, and coming across civilians who've died. The biggest way to cripple autocracies like Russia is to stop financing fossil fuels entirely, says Bill McKibben, co-founder of 350.org. A 1970 law that was supposed to help protect California's ecosystem can stifle new housing developments. Is it time to revamp CEQA or get rid of it? “Inventing Anna” is about Anna Sorokin, who convinced New York's elite that she was a rich German heiress. One of the people she conned was Rachel DeLoache Williams, who ultimately got Sorokin behind bars.
Hi everyone! Mogab was sick this week, and so unfortunately we do not have a new episode for you all. We did not want to leave you hanging, though, so we decided it was a great time to re-release our episode on Anna Delvey! This week, Kristin tells Mogab the story of Anna Delvy - one of the greatest con artists of our generation, which is saying a lot since Millennials can claim both Billy McFarland from Fyre Fest and Elizabeth Holmes from Theranos. Everyone loves a good scam story. And this is definitely a good scam story. So good, in fact, that Shonda Rhimes is making a show with Netflix about Anna Delvy: the German heiress trying to open her Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good (or something like that...). She lives in New York's fanciest hotels, is at all the best parties, and loves to tip big and take lavish trips with her friends. But weird things keep happening: her credit cards keep getting declined, or she's having trouble tapping into her trust fund, so her friends start covering for her. Only, she's not a German heiress. And she doesn't actually have any money. So how did she manage to con all her friends Into funding this lifestyle she wanted so badly? I want to point people towards the National Center for Victims of Crime, who have a Financial Crime Resource Center. They wanted to provide a resource for victim-centered services in the area of financial fraud and so they produce a guide calledTaking Action: An Advocate's Guide to Assisting Victims of Financial FraudThis guide is designed to provide advocates with practical victim-centered resources to help navigate the various options available for reporting crimes, protecting other assets and preventing re-victimization. It also offers advice on how to assist with psychological and – where possible – financial recovery.Sources: “How Anna Delvy Tricked New York” by Jessica Pressler, printed in New York Magazine“My Misadventures with the Magician of Manhattan” by Rachel Deloache Williams, printed in Vanity Fair“Who Is Anna Sorokin, a.k.a. This is a replay episode! My guest today is Rachel DeLoache Williams, Vanity Fair photography editor and now author of My Friend Anna: The True Story Of The Fake Heiress Of New York City (all about her relationship with NYC scammer Anna Delvey. One of TIME magazine's must-read books of 2019. This book is the true story of Anna Delvey through her friend Rachel's eyes, someone you might have read about in the news, the fake heiress whose deceit and elaborate con-artistry deceived the Soho New York scene before her lies were dramatically exposed. This episode of our Secrets and Lies series is all about imposters. From the Outlook archive, we have two stories of lies so audacious that, when exposed, they caused shockwaves globally. Fab Morvan became world famous with the 80s pop band Milli Vanilli. He and his bandmate Rob Pilatus notched up number one hits in Europe and America, and sold millions of albums. But they had a secret - and when that secret came out, it had a devastating effect. Rachel DeLoache Williams ended up in the midst of a high-profile court case in the United States. It all centred on Anna Sorokin - someone she had considered to be a close friend but who she says conned her out of tens of thousands of dollars. Anna had tricked New York city's elite into thinking she was a wealthy German heiress, when in fact she was a fraudster with no trust fund at all. Anna was found guilty on a number of charges including grand larceny and served nearly four years in prison. Do you have a fantastic story involving a secret or a lie? We'd love to hear about it. Record a short voice memo or write an e-mail and send it to us at outlook@bbc.com. If your story is about someone you know, just make sure they're ok with you telling us about it. Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends! They wanted to provide a resource for victim-centered services in the area of financial fraud and so they produce a guide calledTaking Action: An Advocate’s Guide to Assisting Victims of Financial FraudThis guide is designed to provide advocates with practical victim-centered resources to help navigate the various options available for reporting crimes, protecting other assets and preventing re-victimization. It also offers advice on how to assist with psychological and – where possible – financial recovery.Sources: “How Anna Delvy Tricked New York” by Jessica Presster, printed in New York Magazine“My Misadventures with the Magician of Manhattan” by Rachel Deloache Williams, printed in Vanity Fair“Who Is Anna Sorokin, a.k.a. My guest today is Rachel DeLoache Williams,Vanity Fair photography editor and now author of My Friend Anna: The True Story Of The Fake Heiress Of New York City. One of TIME magazine's must-read books of 2019.This book is the true story of Anna Delvey through her friend Rachel's eyes -- someone you might have read about in the news, the fake heiress whose deceit and elaborate con-artistry deceived the Soho New York scene before her lies were dramatically exposed. This is Rachel's story who is still dealing with the consequences of being so betrayed. The pair met through mutual friends, and became inseparable. But after Anna’s debit card was declined in a Morocco whilst on holiday in a five-star luxury resort, Rachel began to suspect that her increasingly mysterious friend was not all she seemed. This book has been called Catch Me If You Can meets Gossip Girl with Instagram filters. Between Anna Delvey, Fyre Festival’s Billy McFarland (Anna even tried to scam Billy) and Elizabeth Holmes, whose start-up app duped the high and mighty of Silicon Valley, 2019 seems to have be the year of the scammer.Hope you enjoy this interview with Rachel and please do leave a rating or review if you did! Anna Sorokin is a Russian Immigrant. Her father was a truck driver in Russia who later ran a heating and cooling business in Germany. Sorokin moved to Paris for an internship at Purple magazine and then moved to New York in 2014. From here she began to embed herself in high society. She wasn't as rich as many of the people in her social circle so she began to run a scam to trick banks and shops into paying for a more extravagant lifestyle. She began telling people that her name was Anna Delvey and that she was a German heiress so she could open a members only arts club on Park Avenue South. She told her friends that Delvey was her mother’s maiden name, which wasn’t true, and that her dad was a diplomat, oil executive or a solar panel magnate. She began buying expensive brands and living in fancy hotels. She would hired private planes and buy expensive gifts for her friends. She also met some members of high society. She became friend with Gabriel Andres Calatrava who is an architect and the son of famous architect. She nearly got him to agree to build her private club. She paid for all of this by getting loans from banks. City National Bank gave her 100,000$ and let her overdraft her account. With this money she went on a shopping spree at Apple and Net-a-Porter. All of this was going well until she took a trip to Morocco with one of her close friends, Rachel DeLoache Williams, who was a former Vanity fair editor and her friend. The two stayed in a five star resort and racked up a 62,000$ bill. When Sorokin’s card got decline she convince Williams to pay the bill, promising to pay her back. When Sorokin didn’t repay her Williams went to the police. Sorokin was first arrested in July 2017 for skipping out on thousands of dollars of bills at the Beekman and W New York hotels and a lunch bill of less than $200 at a restaurant at the Le Parker Meridien hotel. She was released but then arrested again in October. Before her trial Sorokin was offered a plea deal with a sentence of three to nine years in prison but she considered that too long and instead took her chances at trial. At her trial Williams, her friend, testified against her. The jury deliberated for only two days and, on April 25th 2019, returned a guilty verdict. She was found guilty on multiple fraud charges, including second-degree grand larceny and theft of services. She was, however, found not guilty on two other charges: one of two counts of attempted grand larceny, and one for allegedly stealing more than $60,000 from Williams. She was sentenced to four to twelve years in prison and ordered to pay almost $199,000 in restitution, as well as a fine of $24,000. During the trial Sorokin seemed unconcerned. The district attorney commented that she, "more seriously her clothing than anything else." Sorokin has not since expressed any sadness or remorse over her actions. She is quoted as saying: “The thing is, I’m not sorry. I’d be lying to you and to everyone else and to myself if I said I was sorry for anything. I regret the way I went about certain things.” After her release Sorokin hopes to move to London but will likely be deported to Germany. Williams is writing a book about her time with Sorokin and Netflix has acquired the right to a TV show on her.

It all centred on Anna Sorokin - someone she had considered to be a close friend but who had conned her out of tens of thousands of dollars. Anna had tricked New York city’s elite into thinking she was a wealthy German heiress, when in fact she was a fraudster with no trust fund at all. Some people work their whole lives to achieve wealth and success. But for one woman all it took was a European accent and multiple promises of future wire transfers. Suddenly she found herself at the hottest hotels and at lavish dinners with celebrities. But it all came crashing down once the bills were due. Criminal charges, jury deliberations, and fabulous courtroom ensembles are just a few of the things that make up this wealthy web of lies.

My guest this week is Rachel DeLoache Williams, whose recently-released book My Friend Anna: the True Story of the Fake Heiress of New York City, offers a riveting account of her friendship with Anna Sorokin. Anna, also known as the “Soho grifter,” was originally from Russia but posed as a German heiress who wanted to open a private club and spent months living in $400-a-night hotel rooms. While doing so, she befriended Rachel, who loaned her thousands of dollars. Anna was not found criminally guilty in her actions towards Rachel - but was convicted earlier this year of defrauding banks and hotels of up to $250,000, and of trying to lie her way into securing a $22 million loan. She was sentenced to between four and twelve years in prison. Her trial, at with Rachel testified, captivated the world's press - and not just because of the outrageous nature of Anna's crimes. She became known for her high-fashion court attire too. The book makes for gripping reading, and I found our interview, which took place in the office of her publisher Quercus, utterly fascinating. The UK’s second female Prime Minister stepped down last week after a turbulent three years in office. In the last few weeks commentators have picked over Theresa May’s failure to deliver Brexit, her loss of the Conservative majority in the 2017 General Election and her limited progress in tackling the burning injustices she described on the steps of Downing Street in 2016. Today, we turn to a subject that Woman’s Hour first interviewed Theresa May about nearly 20 years ago, encouraging women to stand as MPs and to get on in the Conservative Party. We discuss her legacy for women in politics and look at how women will fare under Boris Johnson’s premiership. Angélique Kidjo is a singer from Benin who’s won three Grammys and made 13 albums.
