Summary: Howdy, partners! Stop number three on our road trip this summer is the Lone Star state - Texas! Join Holly and Devin as they take a romp around the second largest state in the union. It's huge, it's hot and as Holly underlines, tensions tend to run high. A melting pot of the West, the South, American and Mexican influences, Texas really does have it all. Holly and Devin share the ends of the spectrum with their books today. Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:55): Devin discussed Pumpkin by Julie Murphy, a novel that follows Waylon Russell Brewer as his private, quiet drag aspirations are exploded into the public sphere after his audition tape for Fiercest of Them All (a drag show à la RuPaul's Drag Race) is released. As a cruel joke, he and his twin sister's girlfriend Hannah Perez are nominated as Prom Queen and King respectively. Instead of caving to the bullies, Waylon and Hannah decide to play to win. Devin's key takeaways were: This is such a gay book; it's amazing, it's flamboyant, it's loud and proud and includes so much drag. Waylon and his twin Clementine are both gay and we meet a myriad of other queer characters throughout. Whether some characters are already out or not, this book vibrates with positive energy for the queer community. When you hear about a queer book set in Texas, you go in assuming a central tension will be community rejection of the queer character but that was not the case in this book. Waylon's parents accept him and his sister right away and there's a Prism group of fully out high school students - most people aren't repressed and even one character comes out during the book. Yes there's bullying and vitriol but the school supports LGBTQ students and the tone overall is uplifting and supportive. As a high school story, this book explores the evolving sense of self we all remember from that age. While the focus is on Waylon with a first-person narrative structure, we see every character in the book evolve who they believe they are into who they can be. The Dagger (15:47): Holly discussed Bluebird Bluebird by Attica Locke, a literary mystery set in East Texas in 2016. We follow Darren Matthews, a Texas Ranger who has recently been suspended and is called over to Shelby County to help investigate two bodies, one of which recently washed up on the shore of a local woman's back yard. Holly's key takeaways were: Racial tensions abound in this novel. The bodies found were a Black man from Chicago and a local white woman. Darren also struggles with his own identity as a Black man and having to balance being a Texas Ranger with wanting to do right by his community, including the Black community that congregates at Geneva's. Locke underlines the importance and value of community, particularly how the Black community in the town has had to find joy and safety where they can. How places like Geneva's serve as a haven for locals or anyone passing through. Darren's career has put strain on his relationship w his wife Lisa, so he's also navigating being recently kicked out and wanting to go back, while also not wanting to give up his purpose or turn down cases like these. Hot On the Shelf (34:25): Devin: Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man by Violet Marsh Holly: Like Mother, Like Daughter by Kimberly McCreight What's Making Our Hearts Race (38:12): Devin: Riding a horse! Holly: X-Men 97 Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

No one knows Margo's real name. Her colleagues and patrons at a small-town public library only know her middle-aged normalcy, congeniality, and charm. They have no reason to suspect that she is, in fact, a former nurse with a trail of countless premature deaths in her wake. She has turned a new page, so to speak, and the library is her sanctuary, a place to quell old urges. That is, at least, until Patricia, a recent graduate and failed novelist, joins the library staff. Patricia quickly notices Margo's subtly sinister edge, and watches her carefully. When a patron's death in the library bathroom gives her a hint of Margo's mysterious past, Patricia can't resist digging deeper--even as this new fixation becomes all-consuming. Taut and compelling, How Can I Help You explores the dark side of human nature and the dangerous pull of artistic obsession as these "transfixing dual female narrators" (Kimberly McCreight) hurtle toward a stunning climax. How Can I Help You (Putnam, 2023) is a LibraryReads Top Ten Pick of July, an Amazon Editors' Pick of the Month, a Publishers Weekly Pick of the Week, and one of CrimeReads' 10 Best Books of July. Laura Sims's first novel, LOOKER, was chosen as a “Best Book” by Vogue, People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire UK, and more, and is now in development for television by eOne and Emily Mortimer's King Bee Productions. An award-winning poet, Sims has published four poetry collections; her essays and poems have appeared in The New Republic, Boston Review, Conjunctions, and Electric Lit. She and her family live in New Jersey, where she works part-time as a reference librarian and hosts the library's lecture series. Recommendations: Nathan Oates, A Flaw in the Design Marianna Enriquez, Our Share of Night Hilary Leichter, Terrace Story Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Associate Professor at Ithaca College. He writes criticism on contemporary global literatures. His book, Kazuo Ishiguro as World Literature, is under contract with Bloomsbury Publishing. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.
Paula Turkovich's body was found on the rear of 200 Old Country Road in Mineola on March 31st, 2018 at 8:31pm the night before Easter. What makes this case odd is Paula had dinner with her family and in within one hour she is found deceased. PD claim it was a suicide but the timeline does not make sense. The car Paula used that night was found at a train station an hour away from her house and a half hour from the parking garage she allegedly jumped from, however PD insist she took the train to the garage. In Paula's so called suicide letter which her mother believes she was forced to write but was so intelligent she rewrote a quote and underlined it. The quote was from a book called “Reconstructing Amelia” by, Kimberly McCreight, in the story the mom gets a call from her daughter's school saying her daughter Amelia jumped from a building but in fact she never did jump someone murdered Amelia. They lured Amelia to the top of the building and she was pushed to her death. The medical examiner washed the clothes she was wearing and did not fingerprint. I'm a Blubrry affiliate, but that's not the only reason I'm telling you this. I've been using Blubrry Podcasting as my hosting service for my podcast for years and it's one of the best decisions I ever made. They give great customer service, you're in complete control of your own podcast, you can run it from your own website, and it just takes a lot of the work out of podcasting for me. I find for that reason that it's a company that I can get behind 100% and say, “You should try this.” Try Blubrry. It doesn't require a long-term contract, and it's just a great company, period. It also has free technical support by email, video, and phone, so you can get a human being there. Isn't that nice? If you want to podcast, try out Blubrry. No long-term contract, excellent distribution, and great technical support, too, by email, video, and on the phone. I've included an affiliate link on this blog. Download a copy of the PDF transcript of this episode here. Debbi (00:54): Hi everyone. In any case, welcome, and thank you so much for being here, Kimberly McCreight. Kimberly (02:02): Thanks so much for having me. And I'm glad to hear your hooked. That's always good to hear. Debbi (02:09): Oh, totally. I am loving what I'm reading. It's awesome. Am I saying your name right? McCreight? Kimberly (02:14): Yes, that's exactly right. Debbi (02:16): I'm so glad. I just wanna thank you so much for being here. First of all. And one of the things I love about Friends Like These is the way you've told the story through characters who are alike, but are very, very distinctive. Do you usually work from multiple perspectives? Do you usually write from multiple perspectives? Kimberly (02:39): Yeah, all of my books are from multiple points of view, although I guess the, except for the first two of my YA trilogies, those were from a single point of view, but that was really a departure for me. So all of my other books are multiple points of view and usually multiple timeframes. Friends Like These was the most points of view I have ever done. I think there are six or seven. And also most of my books include like interstitial elements, journal entries or social media to kind of … it's this orchestral way of telling a story. So, yeah, that was it. To be honest, I think made it a little hard for me to sell my first book because that's the way I wr...

Summary: Take a bite out of the Big Apple with Holly and Devin today! They peel back the layers of New York City with books that focus on Harlem and Park Slope, Brooklyn. Holly and Devin both lived in the city (Devin for 2 years, Holly for 20) so it holds a special place in their hearts. That being said, stories set in the city can be over-romanticized and a lazy choice and the books they appreciate most have a true, granular sense of place and don't just center around Times Square. Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:26): Devin discussed Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson, a book that starts right after the death of Mama Joy, the adoptive mother of 4 grown men and the lynchpin of their Harlem community. She ran a knitting store for decades, and after her untimely passing the family and community are left to pick up the pieces and figure out who they are without her. Devin's key takeaways were: Kerry Fuller and Jesse Strong, the central couple of the book, are deeply connected to Mama Joy and the shop specifically, but their dynamic for most of the book feels more brother-sister than the tension you'd hope for from a friends to lovers romance. Jesse has 3 brothers (Noah, Lucas, and Damien) who act as foils for Jesse's immaturity and propensity to ignore responsibility for the sake of sleeping with more women; they also want to close the shop which acts as the central driver for Jesse and the book's plot. Overall, this book felt more like a family and community story than it did a romance. There was a deep sense of place and connection to Harlem throughout, but the book got a steaminess rating of 2. The Dagger (15:38): Holly discussed A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight, a thrilling romp that unpacks the torrid affairs and pulse-quickening drama of the wealthy Park Slope elites. NYC criminal defense attorney Lizzie receives a call from Rikers Prison - her friend from college, Zach Grayson, is in prison after his wife is found dead at the bottom of the stairs of their Brooklyn brownstone. Her key takeaways were: The book oscillates between Lizzie's first-hand account of figuring out what really happened, the wife Amanda's diary in the days leading up to her death, and Grand Jury testimony transcripts; this serves to heighten intrigue and give the reader lots of puzzle pieces to fit together. While the book doesn't criticize gentrification directly, there is definite shade thrown at the bougie Park Slope mom's and the elite culture (including a partner-swapping sex party!) While the book had a few red herrings that felt like a stretch, Holly still rated this book very highly and recommends the book especially on audio. Holly also wanted to recommend When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole as a good accompaniment to A Good Marriage. Hot On the Shelf (34:17): Holly: Kismet by Amina Akhtar Devin: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus What's Making Our Hearts Race (39:25): Holly: Watching Showgirls at Cinespia, Cemetery Films Devin: American Rescue Dog Show on ABC/Hulu Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. On this Complicated Conversation, we chat with New York Times bestselling author Kimberly McCreight, about her new novel, Friends Like These. MCreight has crafted another character-driven mystery, this one about a group of college friends in their early 30's that reunite at an upstate home to stage an intervention for one in their group. The intervention quickly goes terribly wrong when one friend is found dead inside a car and another is missing. ** Friendship is a key aspect of this book and Kimberly explains why she wanted to explore the dark side of unconditional love and loyalty. (01:47) ** Friends Like These includes a fascinating cast of characters, including what we call complicated women in Maeve, Stephanie, Alice, and Detective Julia Scutt. We discuss who came first and how she built out this web of friends. (09:51) ** This book moves around in time a lot seamlessly and we just can't help but press Kimberly about how she keeps it all straight without outlining. (12:04) ** Inspired by a quote from her newsletter, we discuss “letting go” with Kimberly, a fellow lawyer and self-described control freak. Her words about accepting uncertainty are truly aspirational, in writing and in life! (17:11) ** Friends Like These is a product of the Covid-related lockdown and Kimberly explains how she managed to be productive among the madness. (23:31) ** We delve into the different realities writers have to juggle...there's the book she is promoting, the book she is writing and the new idea she is conceiving. Kimberly talks to us about how those three things work together. We geek out about calendars and schedules! (27:04) ** The group of friends in the novel meet at a weekend house in Kaaterskill, NY, which has an interesting duality between the locals and the weekenders. So even the setting is complicated and adds to the drama. (30:33) ** Kimberly is a Virgo, with a Pisces moon, and shares a love of astrology. She opens up about her recent experience with a tarot card reading where she demanded a do-over! (34:06) ** We do a speed round of questions on writing, being an author, and what makes her tick! (39:00) ** Kimberly shares what she's loving right now and it's one of our personal favorites! (45:40) ** We get updates on her book to screen adaptations! (47:00) Support this podcast
Read by Alex McKenna, Carlotta Brentan, Ewan Chung, Joe Knezevich, Lauren Fortgang, Stacey Glemboski and Susan Dalian. Everyone has those friends. Doesn't matter how long it's been, or how badly they've behaved, or how late it is when that call finally comes - you show up. No questions asked. There's something so beautiful about that kind of unconditional love. It can turn ugly, though.... Ten years after graduation, a group of friends plan a reunion in a remote house in upstate New York. It isn't a bachelor party, as they've led one of their friends to believe, but instead an intervention for an escalating drug addiction. They lost one member of their friendship group in college, and they'll do anything to make sure that doesn't happen again.... But from the moment they arrive, something doesn't feel right. The local community doesn't like outsiders, and they're especially hostile to this group. And with so much shared history between old friends, it's inevitable that a secret or two will slip out over the course of the weekend. And one of them will lead to murder. From New York Times best-selling author Kimberly McCreight comes an gripping thriller, perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Allie Reynolds and Sarah Pearse.

We cover all the formative classic cartoons/kid’s shows across all three channels, with special shoutouts to the PBS shows for everyone without cable. Remember Arthur? Dragon Tales?! So great. And be sure to head over to the Books and the City Instagram stories to vote for our official hashtag! We need your help to break the tie. Special Note This episode was recorded on May 14, 2020. A lot has happened since then, so I wanted to time-stamp this to provide appropriate context for our discussion. Next Wednesday, I'm releasing a special bonus episode sharing my favorite books by black authors. In Episode 61, Kimberly McCreight (author of A Good Marriage) shares her 11 year journey to publishing her first novel, why she wanted to focus on marriage in this book, how working during coronavirus has been, and a possible sequel to A Good Marriage! This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights Kimberly’s journey to becoming a writer (including her change from lawyer to author). What it’s like to work on a book for so long before having to trash it (she trashed 4 books before publishing her debut novel). The worst parts of being a writer. A piece of advice she always tells aspiring authors. What it was like to finally sell Reconstructing Amelia after 11 long years of trying to publish a book. A possible sequel to A Good Marriage. Why Kimberly wanted to focus on marriage as a theme for this book. Why Park Slope makes such a good setting for novels. How Kimberly is working through coronavirus. A preview of her next novel. How Kimberly’s own experience as a recovering alcoholic influenced her writing of Sam (a character in the book with an alcohol addiction). Why Kimberly tries not to read in her genre while she’s writing. What is was like to visit Rikers (as research for her book). Feedback Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix Harrow (rec’d by Eric) Broken Wings by L-J Baker, Princess of Dorsa by Eliza Andrews, When Women Were Warriors by Catherine Wilson (the kindle version is free on Amazon!!), and everything Anna Burke has written (rec’d by Wynnde) Questions 1. Since it’s almost June, the Gay Month, today I wanna ask for some LGBT recs! In the past I’ve read The Price of Salt, My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness (RECOMMEND btw!!!), On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Brown, White, Black, The Song of Achilles, and probably others I can’t remember. I already have Ari & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Red, White & Royal Blue, Juliet Takes a Breath, Freshwater, An Unkindness of Ghosts, and It’s a Whole Spiel on my TBR. It would be great if you could recommend 1 fiction and 1 non-fiction, particularly looking for something by a female or nonbinary author, bonus points if they are NOT from the US/UK (or even Europe) as I’m trying to read about experiences other than my own. –Dee 2. COVID-19 Reading Recs: I am a healthcare worker, and this pandemic has been challenging both personally and professionally. My colleagues and I have been working 24/7 to support our community through this difficult time. I am proud to serve my patients, but I am feeling increasingly isolated as this pandemic stretches on. I am in a long distance marriage, and due to travel restrictions in place from my organization, I am not sure when I will be able to see my husband or my family again. I always turn to books in times of crisis, and am having trouble concentrating on my usual genres. What I am hoping for in my reading life is some light fluffy romance with lots of banter, particularly with depictions of strong sibling relationships and/or found families. Some comps would be the Bridgerton series or The Governess Game by Tessa Dare. I know this is a very specific request, and would appreciate any and all recommendations. Thank you so much! –Niki 3. Since quarantine started, I’ve been mostly craving mystery/thrillers and lately (after hearing you describe Death by Dumpling), I’ve been wanting to pick up some cozy mysteries! I love that they’re bingeable and that there’s usually tons more in the series. I think I’m gonna pick 5-10 cozies, read them all and choose my favorite to continue on. I love the Inspector Gamache series (not really a cozy), Riley Sagar thrillers, I recently loved The Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight, The City We Became by NK Jemisin and the Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. I don’t care to read much historical fiction. I’m always trying to read from a diversity of authors, especially women of color. What are your fave cozies? And do they need to be read in order? –Tara 4. TIME SENSITIVE: I am going on a trip to Charleston and Savannah, and would love some recommendations for books set in either/both of these places. I’ve already read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I am open to any genre and would love anything to get me excited about the upcoming trip! *Also would love any recommendations for independent bookstores in the area, if you know of any!* –Netta 5. My 13-year-old daughter and I are starting a mother-daughter book club for the two of us, thanks to our forced-pandemic-togetherness time. Especially with school ending soon, I hope this is a good way to have some structure as well as fun. We are starting with Pet, by Akwaeke Emezi, and I am looking for recommendations for what we should read next. Some of her favorite books are The Westing Game, The War that Saved my Life, and the Percy Jackson books. I read lots of fantasy, mystery, romance, and some literary fiction – recent faves include The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai, CL Polk’s Kingston cycle books, and Gail Carriger’s Soulless series. My daughter requests nothing that would embarrass to her talk about with her mom (a little swearing is ok, but no explicit sex on the page), and neither of us like graphic violence. Thank you for your help! –Alicia 6. Hi! I love your show! I’ve gotten so many good quirky books with unusual characters or premises…like 1980s high school field hockey team dabbles in witchcraft…or characters like a wyverary (mother was a wyvern, father was a library)…or washed up rock band has to compete in universe-wide battle of the bands to prove that humans are sentient and save the planet? I enjoy most genres, so it’s not limited to fantasy! –Kaitlyn 7. Hi there! Recently I’ve become interested in house plants, and I’ve absolutely loved reading “How to Houseplant: A Beginner’s Guide to Making and Keeping Plant Friends” by Heather Rodino. I loved the author’s practical tips on finding the right light for your plants, watering, different kinds of soil, and what plant would be best for your space. I’m interested in learning more about plants (both indoor and outdoor) / gardening in general. I’d love to read something else that is along the same lines as “How to Houseplant.” Perhaps a step up from beginner but not quite expert. I’d love to hear any recommendations you might have! I loved talking to Kimberly McCreight about her latest book, A Good Marriage. Kimberly has such an her impressive body of work including The New York Times best-selling book Reconstructing Amelia, which was nominated for the Edgar, Anthony, and Alex Awards and was called Entertainment Weekly’s favorite book of the year and optioned for film by HBO and Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films. Her second adult novel, Where They Found Her, was a USA Today best seller and a Kirkus Best Mystery of the Year. She's also the author of The New York Times best-selling young adult trilogy The Outliers, which was optioned for film by Lionsgate and Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard. Her latest book, A Good Marriage, is a legal and domestic suspense novel that had me gasping out loud while I was reading it. The characters and their exploration of marriage, secrets, and compromises is riveting. Kimberly and I spoke about "sleepaway camp parties," plot twists, and what happiness or "a good marriage" can really mean.
*** Carinn and Kate chat about the interview highlights with Kimberly: her writing process and nuggets of wisdom for writers, her obsession with baking, our mutual love of astrology, her leaving the law to follow her true calling as a writer and, most importantly, her explorations of what makes a good marriage. (00:45) *** Kimberly tells us the story of A Good Marriage in her own words. It is part legal thriller, part domestic suspense, as well as a genuine exploration of what it means to sustain a marriage over time and the secrets couples keep and the compromises they make to stay together at whatever the cost. (7:05) *** Kate wants to know more about her complicated protagonist Lizzie and what inspired her to write her. Kimberly reveals that she is the character closest in personality to herself in a basic way, which meant she had to be aware of the blind spots when writing her. (10:05) *** Carinn recounts many of the remarkable complicated female characters Kimberly has written in A Good Marriage and Kimberly explains how character and plotting work together for her. Being a “pantser” who doesn’t outline and flies by the seat of her pants definitely doesn’t make it easy, but the result is sheer magic. (13:20) *** The book is called A Good Marriage and Kate and Carinn loved hearing from Kimberly on what makes a good marriage, what sustains it over time, what matters most, and why people don’t seem to want to talk about this subject as much as we all do! Her smart documentary style promotional trailer is a must watch and had us reminiscing about the couples on the couch in When Harry Met Sally. (20:20) *** On a podcast that celebrates complicated women as multi-dimensional humans, Kimberly couldn’t escape without being asked about any contradictions in her own personality. Her answer really resonated with us. (29:58) *** Kimberly reveals the complicated women that inspire her and how she is raising the next generation of strong, smart females. (31:54) *** Carinn needs to talk about her obsession with baking since Kimberly shares the same compulsion. They try to unpack this soothing, yet sometimes emotionally draining, hobby and what bigger purpose it serves. (35:38) *** Kate can’t bake so she wants to get back to the law and hear more about how Kimberly tried to ignore her compulsion to write for the security of being a lawyer. Kimberly speaks openly and bravely about the decision to pursue her passion, even if the road was long and hard. (41:08) *** Kimberly’s legal training is baked into her novels in such organic and analytical ways that clearly this was meant to unfold for her in the way it has (with tremendous success). (51:55) *** Carinn sheepishly floats one final question about astrology and the result is pure joy. Let’s just say we all agree to go forth and normalize astrology!
