Welcome Wayne Howett to Purposely, where he shares his organisation's mission and his career and life journey. Wayne is the CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities® New Zealand (RMHC NZ), an organisation dedicated to providing practical help and compassionate care to families of hospitalised children. Wayne has experience of having a sick child and this lived experience led him to the work he does today. His daughter, Claudia, was just eight weeks old when he noticed something amiss while playfully lifting her in the air. Prompted by a concerning observation in her eyes, Wayne's wife took her to the doctor, leading to a swift referral to a specialist. Within a day, they were in consultation with medical experts, indicating the severity of the situation. Two days later, Claudia underwent surgery to remove her right and to treat cancerous tumours in her left eye, diagnosed with bilateral Retinoblastoma. This marked the beginning of Wayne and his family's challenging medical journey. In their thirties, Wayne and his wife found themselves travelling overseas in pursuit of the best treatment for Claudia. Their journey took them to Miami in the United States, where Wayne, facing the challenge of lacking insurance, ingeniously found ways to cover the mounting medical expenses. This included securing local employment and juggling work responsibilities with caring for their daughter. Despite the immense challenges, the treatment proved successful, and Claudia, now 23, leads a vibrant life. Though she lost her sight due to the treatment, Claudia remains active and joyful, particularly enjoying horse riding, often accompanied by her father, who acts as her guide on the trails. When presented with the opportunity to lead the Auckland branch and then the combined RMHC nationwide, Wayne recognised himself as an ideal candidate. His firsthand experience of caring for his daughter, combined with his professional expertise honed during his tenure as an audit professional, uniquely positioned him for the role. The charity Wayne leads supports parents and families navigating the challenges of medical treatment for their children. Wayne has drawn from his own experiences of both domestic and international medical journeys to lead the mission locally in Aotearoa NZ and his lived experience really helps him to empathise with the parents going through their own journeys. "I've been in that situation personally. And so I know that the day-to-day challenges suddenly become monumental. They're not trivial matters that you can easily brush aside; they become significant hurdles in your mind because you're dealing with this trauma." Ronald McDonald House Charities worldwide are dedicated to providing practical help and compassionate care to families of sick children. The RMHC team know the importance of empathy, support, and involving families in paediatric healthcare, and this was particularly relevant amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic. RMHC New Zealand operate on a $12 million annual budget, employs over 130 staff and relies on the dedication of around 400 volunteers. Its facilities, spanning across the country, include Houses in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, alongside Family Rooms in Auckland, Invercargill and Christchurch, and a Family Retreat in Rotorua. This retreat, situated on the shores of Lake Rotorua, serves families whose journeys have been particularly challenging. Wayne's journey with RMHC began in June 2010 when he was appointed CEO of RMH Auckland Trust. He assumed the role of CEO of RMHC NZ in early 2015, overseeing the amalgamated trusts of RMH Auckland and RMH Wellington, and later the amalgamation of the South Island trust (RMHSI). His tenure includes four years as the first New Zealand representative advising RMHC Global on expansion and network strengthening and latterly on Global Impact Strategy. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

Welcome back to the Lighthouse Podcast! Last September, we had the privilege of attending a poignant gathering in Washington, D.C., called "CureFest." Amidst the inspiring atmosphere, we had the honor of encountering remarkable individuals and organizations. Today, we're thrilled to share a heartfelt conversation with Leia Hunt, one of the extraordinary souls we met at CureFest. Leia's journey began at the tender age of 2 1/2 when she was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma. She had a total of 26 surgeries and relapsed during her two-year cancer journey. Inspired by her own family's journey, Leia founded Leia's Kids to offer support and hope to families facing similar challenges. She discusses the creation of journals and the heartwarming children's book "Princess Marygold," which aimed to bring light to young cancer warriors' lives.  As we explore the long-term effects of chemotherapy, Leia sheds light on what parents can expect and how they can best support their children through any challenges that may arise. She also shares the evolution of her faith throughout their journey and offers words of encouragement to those affected by childhood cancer. You will walk away from this episode being so encouraged by Leia's voice for childhood cancer and find inspiration in her message of finding beauty and normalcy in every circumstance. Host Jim Eskin celebrates the selfless individuals who dedicate their lives to helping others by highlighting their passion and guiding non-profits in a positive direction.  In this episode, the spotlight is on Leia Hunt. Leia Hunt is a 2 time childhood cancer survivor, founder of the nonprofit known as Leia's Kids, podcast host, inspirational speaker, and author of My Battle Plan Journal. Leia was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer when she was two years old. Leia's battle with childhood cancer resulted in her undergoing 26 surgical procedures, multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and ultimately the insertion of a radioactive plaque in her left eye. The radiation ultimately defeated her cancer but left her blind in the left eye. These circumstances defined Leia's life. Leia says her cancer battle truly began as she grew up with side effects from treatment, being half-blind and navigating her youth knowing she was different. Leia has turned the devastation of her childhood cancer into a testimony of hope and faith. Leia is passionate about sharing her story and has embraced the opportunity to speak at various events. Leia's unique perspective on surviving and thriving is a story that she is willing to share with others. Leia founded Leia's Kids, a 501(c)3 non-profit at 18 years old, while a senior in high school. Leia grew up hosting lemonade stands, school fundraisers, and more for childhood cancer awareness! However, as she got older she knew she survived cancer for a reason and wanted to do more for God's kingdom! She wanted to meet these families and look them in the eyes to tell them they can turn this negative situation into something positive. This led to the beginning of her calling and purpose on this earth. To help those suffering to find hope and bring glory to God through our trials on earth. Leia's Kids gives financial donations to families but also hosts dream parties for fighters and siblings. Currently, at the age of 22, Leia runs Leia's Kids full time along with working towards a bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education at Texas A&M Commerce University. Leia's Kids Official Website

It's been around for a long time. There are case reports in the literature as early as 1950 of intra-arterial chemotherapy, one specifically being giving nitrogen mustard, of all things, interactively through a catheter for the treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma.” TS 1:43  “Retinoblastoma is a common indication at this point in time for intra-arterial chemotherapy and has very good success rates. Intra-arterial chemotherapy is also used in liver cancers, whether it's an unresectable liver metastasis from adenocarcinoma of the colon or it's unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, as an another example where it's used. And it can also be used in hepatocellular or HCC carcinoma.” TS 6:36  “Some of the things, like pretreatment, things that the nurse has to look for in any of those are labs and particularly clotting times. You know, to make sure that a PT and an INR and a platelet count was drawn because this patient is going to have a catheter in their artery and frequently will have heparin, so we need to make sure you know what that is.” TS 8:22  “When you're pulling your drug information, your patient drug information sheets, it may not be appropriate to give the Adriamycin® teaching sheet from OncoLink or ChemoCare or ONS because that's generally the side effects of systemic treatment. Whereas if it's going to be given intra-arterially, they are probably not going to have hair loss and mouth sores, and their blood counts may not be affected.” TS 10:36  “In some cases, the nurse may be actually administering the medication, and in other cases they're not going to be actually administering it. So, if you have the situation where that intra-arterial procedure is done, like within the operating room or interventional radiology, then typically the radiologist or another physician will be administering it, but the RN may be in the room. It's often not a chemotherapy-qualified RN, it's often interventional radiology RN, so this is really a group effort between oncology nurses and those interventional radiology nurses and operating room nurses.” TS 12:03  “But in that case, as far as administration, again, it will probably be the physician, but where the nurse can play the role is with all those steps of verification. So, the dual verification process for chemotherapy needs to not just apply when you're giving it ID and an infusion center or inpatient. But it needs to happen in those off sites like interventional radiology in the operating room. So, the nurse in this suite can work and be part of that dual verification process, you know, comparing the orders with the drug and the patient identifiers. The nurse in that type of situation, in interventional radiology or operating room, can help ensure that safe handling occurs because those employees and physicians may not be as familiar with it. So, making sure that you have the PPE gowns the gloves goggles in the correct ways to dispose of it in those suites.” TS 12:43  “With time, just as it would with a venous port, that catheter can move out of place. So, even with the implanted pumps I was mentioning before, those catheters can move, and so we don't routinely check placement of the tip. What can happen is if the tip moves into another place, the patient will have those high doses of chemotherapy going systemic and will experience more side effects.” TS 19:22  “Some part of the adverse reactions could be related to the catheter or the pump itself, and then some of the adverse reactions are related to the drug itself.” TS 20:06  “So, other things that can happen with catheters and pumps, whether they're temporary or permanent, is always the risk for hemorrhage because it's in an artery. So, if something breaks or some tubing becomes disconnected, then the patient could hemorrhage. So, it's important that everything is always lured locked, connections taped, and that is being checked frequently to make sure that everything is tight and secure so that there's not that risk for hemorrhage from a catheter, an IV tubing, or needle becoming disconnected.” TS 21:11  “I honestly think this entire topic is something that's not discussed much, and I wish people knew more about it. I also wish people knew more about one of the areas of this topic—hepatic chemoembolizations, also called TACE [trans-arterial chemoembolization]. There are a lot of patients out there that are getting this in different locations, different hospitals, parts of the country, but because we typically are working in infusion centers are impatient areas, we are often not that knowledgeable about it because it happens somewhere else in interventional radiology or the OR. But our patients are affected by it, and we need to know more about it.” TS 26:55

Kyle shares his views on creativity, problem solving, and finding a way. Instead of focusing on what you don't have, focus on what you do have. His message that we always have a choice and we are not helpless is empowering for us all. Join us as we gain real world tips on navigating your way through adversity in life. About Kyle Kyle Coon lost his sight at the age of six after a battle with Retinoblastoma—cancer of the eye. However, not having sight has not stopped him from pursuing vision. Since then he has become a competitive rock climber, downhill skier, runner and triathlete. As a young child, Kyle was shown how to embrace his adversity by world-class blind athlete Erik Weihenmayer who encouraged him to live life to the fullest. Kyle took Weihenmayer's advice to heart and began pursuing a life of adventure. In 2006, he hiked the Ankascocha Trail into Machu Picchu. In 2007, he summited Mt. Kilimanjaro at the age of 15. After graduating from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Communication, he became an endurance athlete competing in numerous marathons and triathlons. In 2018, he was a member of the first team of tandem cyclists with all blind or visually impaired stokers (person on the back of a tandem bike) to complete Race Across America—the world's toughest bicycle race—racing from Oceanside, Calif to Annapolis, Md in seven days 15 hours. Later in 2018, at Ironman Arizona, Kyle became the first totally blind person to complete an Ironman branded Triathlon (2.4 mi swim, 112 mi bike, 26.2 mi run) in under 11 hours. He continues to push himself physically and mentally as he now pursues his goal of representing the USA at the 2020 Paralympics in the sport of Triathlon. As a young man, Kyle has spoken to major organizations about his adversity and triumphs including various Rotary Clubs in Florida and Taiwan, the International Association of Refrigerated Warehousing, and The American Cancer Society. He has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and in Backpacker and Triathlete magazines. Losing sight has only served as a base for Kyle's ability to master his ambitions despite his inability to see them. Inspiring those with similar challenges and sharing a few laughs along the way has become his trademark. Drawing upon his experiences as a totally blind person and adventure athlete, he demonstrates the importance of vision, commitment and courage to pursuing an “Eyeronvision” and embracing the adversity along our life's journey. While he wasn't the first blind person to climb a mountain, run a marathon or compete in a triathlon, his goal is to be one of the best and ensure he isn't the last.
