Success Unscrambled | Blog Traffic Tips | Business Success Stories
You've clicked the validate button then hit the apply now button but cannot seem to set up rich pins on Pinterest. Many days, weeks and months have passed and the promise of success on Pinterest is only a dream. Everyone keeps saying that the process is easy. You are constantly seeing report after report of fellow bloggers who managed to increase their traffic by 200%, 500% and even 900% in a short time. Truth be told, you are this close to either tearing your hair out or totally avoiding any post that mentions Pinterest. Oh, how your heart yearns to experience that success yourself. Is it you, or maybe your blog. It could even be the platform you're using or just the theme. In this post, I will take you through a number of ways where you too can finally pop a bottle of bubbly after you set up rich pins on Pinterest. What on Earth are Rich Pins Anyway? In case you are brand new to Pinterest and have not yet had to go through the agony called rich pins let me explain. Back in 2014, Pinterest introduced a new feature called rich pins which in layman's terms means that more details can be seen by the end-user on your pin. Depending on the type of pin, these details can include a larger title, more information in the form of two descriptions as well as a call to action button. Let's look at real-life examples. In the above image, you will see a Pinterest pin where the rich pin feature is not enabled. In this example, you can already see that there are a lot more details included on this pin. This account has rich pins enabled for article pins so you can see much more information about this pin. Types of Rich Pins In case you are wondering if there are different types of rich pins, the answer is yes. When the rich pin feature was launched there were 5 different kinds of pins. Recipe pinsMovie pinsArticle pinsPlace pinsProduct pins It means that a wide range of businesses was being accommodated with this new feature. However, at the time of writing this article only three types of pins continue to exist, recipe, product and article pins. Pinterest also gives each business the option to remove rich pins should they decide to do this at a later stage. You already saw an example of an article pin so let me show you what a recipe pin looks like. Some experts may argue that there is already so much information on this pin that users will not click-through. However, if you look carefully you will notice that the method of how to make the cake is missing from the pin. I think it is a clever way to check the ingredients before clicking through to the page. 5 Key Things to Set Up Rich Pins Before looking at the process to set up rich pins let's look at the five (5) key things you need to have to make this work. Blog postA tags plugin like Yoast or All Meta TagsPinterest business accountPinterest boards with pins to the URL for validationAccess to pin validator Let's look at each of these in a little detail. 1. Blog post In order to set up rich pins, you need to have an existing article, recipe or product published and ready to go. One key reason why many people fail at setting up rich pins is that they don't have the required item like a blog post ready to be validated. 2. A Tags Plugin In this post, I am specifically looking at setting up rich pins for a WordPress site. If you are trying to do this for Squarespace go here. For Shopify try this link and for Etsy, you can find a great resource that explains how to do that here. 3. Pinterest business account A key aspect of getting rich pins enabled is the fact that you need to have a Pinterest business account. Rich pins will not work on a personal account at all. 4. Verified business account It is possible that you may have set up a business account on Pinterest but you forgot to get it verified. If you are unsure what I mean here is a quick exampl...

Will they make me rich? The jury is still out on that one, but anything is possible! Rich pins are pins that pull metadata from your website and the information is displayed directly on a pin. It also gives pinners a better picture of what they’ll see on your website. It is shown to improve engagement, and possibly even lower your bounce rate. There are four different types of Rich Pins: App pins, Product pins, Recipe pins, and Article pins (designers are more likely to use article pins). The pin links to your article, drops your website name on the bottom of the pin, shows the author, and is even capable of more. Better yet—adding Rich Pins to your Pinterest account is completely free. It seems like a win-win. Keep listening as Darla and Natalie share more benefits! How do I set up Rich Pins? The very short version is this: Pinterest needs to be able to access meta-data on your account. There are a couple of ways to do this. You can install the Yoast SEO plugin on your site, update a couple of settings, and voilà! If Yoast is not an option, you need to add specific coding to the header of each page on your site. Detailed instructions are linked in the resources. OR pass the task to your web developer and watch them work their magic! Once you’ve got your metadata sorted out on your website, you head on over to the Pinterest validator and enter a single URL from your website. Click ‘apply now’! Once Pinterest has validated your account (it may take 2-3 weeks) you’ll see that Rich Pins are enabled when you create one. The long and short of it is this: you NEED Rich Pins. Pinterest has implemented a new change—they now require your pins to have a title. The goal is to make their search results more targeted to what the user is searching for. There is a method to Pinterest’s title madness. You are allowed up to 100 characters to provide context for your pin. But when a pinner is scrolling through their feed, they’ll likely only see the first 30-35 characters of your title. You only have 30 characters to grab their attention and reel them in! So make it eye-catching. Natalie recommends using a title case font, which is proven to show higher click-through rates. To hear their other tips, keep listening! Pinterest SEO, a whole new world Darla points out that the only thing that is constant is change. So in the name of improvement, Pinterest turned its SEO world upside down. Adding a title to pins allows users to use Pinterest more like a search engine. With a few expertly placed keywords in your title, you will rank in results for whatever search term is used. It is now the #1 thing Pinterest will pull from when providing results. Previously, Pinterest pulled data from your Rich Pins (which we talk about a little bit more in this post). Hey guys! I’m back today with an episode alllll about the platform that lots of us have found very confusing - Pinterest. What are monthly viewers? How are people going viral? Why is it such a good traffic source for some and not for others and how the Jeff do we make it work for us. Well, I sat down with Reena Rai, the UK Influencer Community Manager for Pinterest and she gave me the TOTAL 401 on Pinterest so I thought I’d share what I learned with you. Currently over 250m people access Pinterest every month with around 50m of them hailing from the UK. They use it to essentially see what to do, what to buy and what to create. This means it’s an unbelievable tool to master for bloggers and online business owners a like - that’s a LOT of people seeing your content. And no silly, ‘let’s limit it to 6% of your followers’ business going on either. Now I am NOT a Pinterest expert, so what I thought I’d do is kind of like a walkthrough episode for ya so that you can get your laptops or phones out and implement some tweaks and changes as we go through OR if you’re on the go, this episode might just lift the lid on what a GIFT Pinterest is for bloggers and online business owners a like. SO if you’re ready, let’s crack on. First things first, a lot of you have come to me in the past and said, ‘oh Vix I know I should be on Pinterest but I just don’t know where to start’ or, you’ve been wondering how to generate traffic from it. TOTALLY been there myself. Now usually I would direct you to some Pinterest whizzes like Victoria from Apartment No 4, who wrote a great blog post for me all about Pinterest for bloggers - so defo go and read that. But I thought, seeing as I’ve just met with Pinterest, I can break it down for you like Reena did for me! So you’ve probably heard this a thousand billion times but Pinterest is a visual search engine. It’s like Google’s better looking sister. The me, to my twin. Haha. Jokes. What that means though is that is a platform that people go to to look for inspiration or guidance - a range of how tos, tutorials and tips. So in the same way that your brilliantly helpful and interesting content does well in Google search - that same content should also do well on Pinterest. One HUGE benefit of Pinterest, unlike other social media apps *cough*INSTAGRAM*cough* is that your followers see your content and share it widely to people who AREN’T following you. Which again means so many eyes on your content! Unlike other platforms too, Pinterest content hangs around for AGES with the average shelf life of a pin being 105 days. Imagine all the traffic rolling in from that! Not all content is made for Pinterest however. Your 3am ramblings over boys not texting you back or that Payday Edit about the New Look purse you want may not pull in the results in comparison to a travel guide, beauty tutorial, fashion cookbook, recipe or guide. This is probably why I haven’t utilised Pinterest before. I can’t seem many people looking to it for tips on snogging or what to say to fuckboys. But now I’m writing more lifestyle and blogging based content - it’s definitely something I want to utilise. I’ll give you a bit of background on my Pinterest - it ain’t me. Haha I had the wonderful Lex from Talonted Lex manage it for a month or two and she helped optimise my boards. Then I had a couple of other pals help out with getting to grips with the Tailwind scheduler - but I’ll come back to that. So if you go on my profile and see a quarter of a million monthly views (as it stands) please don’t think that makes me good at Pinterest. Haha! Anyway, now I have the wonderful Dani who works with me and she sets up my Tailwind pins BUT after my meeting with Reena, I came home and basically transformed my entire profile - and that’s what I’m going to work with you on today. So, if you’re listening to this, I hope you have a Pinterest account already set up. BUT if it’s personal, you’re going to need to convert it to business. So go ahead and pause here because you MUST do it. Business accounts give you so much more access to analytics, rich pins (I’ll explain) and a whole host of goodies that Pinterest has coming up (which I got a sneak peek into and OMFG) Once you’ve done that, I want us to walk through how to optimise your profile. GO ahead and click ‘Settings’ and your profile should come up. Fill it in but there’s one area I really want you to focus on and that’s your profile name and description. This is where you need to get those keywords in that relate to your blog or business. So for example, because I blog about blogging and I’m a blogging coach - I want to make sure my profile name and description has keywords like - blogger, blogging tips, social media strategy etc in it. Your description is totally searchable so make sure you’ve got the terms in there that you want to be found for! The next best bit about a business profile is that you get to ‘claim’ your other channels. To claim your website, you need to get a piece of code from Pinterest and then to put it into your website’s backend (that’s what she said). I’m on Wordpress so I downloaded a plugin called Headers and Footers which meant I could copy and paste the code into my header. There are tons of tutorials on how to do this for all web platforms if you get stuck. Next, you can use the APIs of Instagram, Youtube and Etsy to claim those accounts too - definitely recommended. This means that if anyone wants to pin your banging Insta content into travel Inso, fashion ideas or beauty tutorials - it all attributes back to you. This could be a great way to gain new followers! You can also upload your Insta content directly to Pinterest too and direct people to your profile. That’s the basics of your profile up and running. There are other ways to optimise it with the cover pins and featured boards but I think we’ll come back to that in another episode! You’ll also want to ensure that your blog has the Pinterest ‘Pin It’ or ‘Save’ button installed. This is where people can hover over a picture from your post and a Pinterest logo comes up so that they can save it to their board. On Wordpress you just need to enable to Pinterest plugin and link it to your business account. Again there are tons of tutorials if you’re stuck or if you have a Pipdig theme like I do it comes pre installed - but go and hover over some images on your blog to check it works! The next great thing you get with a business account is that you can enable, ‘Rich Pins’. All this means is that there are different pin types that will pull through information and look mega fancy. For example - recipe pins will show cooking time, ingredients and all the juicy diets on Pinterest. Mainly we’ll be making ‘article pins’ which is where Pinterest will give a viewer a snippet of what our blog posts are about and will encourage the Pinner to read it. To get the most out of these pins, you should make sure that when you upload a photo for your post, that you write a description of the article in the description box as this is what Pinterest pulls through. For example, I will make the graphic for this podcast episode and write in the description box something like, ‘Here’s my latest podcast episode which is a beginner’s guide to Pinterest. I discuss how bloggers can use Pinterest and how we can get the most out of our business accounts.’ I will try and put those keywords like ‘beginner’s Pinterest guide’ and ‘bloggers Pinterest’ in there so that it can become searchable within Pinterest. If you forget though, don’t panic, you can go into Pinterest and rewrite Pin descriptions to make them more searchable by including keywords and even hashtags but I’ll discuss that in a min. A key benefit of Pinterest over other platforms is the myriad of ways you are discoverable. You can use hashtags - the broader the better as they are still relatively new in Pinterest world. But make sure you put them on fresh content. Some of Pinterests feeds are chronological so hashtags will only matter on fresh content really! So, your content can be found on Pinterest in these ways - the home feed, the following feed and in related pins. You will appear in someone’s home feed if Pinterest’s algorithm deems your content relevant to what people have been pinning. SO if I pin loads of gold wedding dresses, the next time I go to my home feed - loads more gold dresses will show up - and not just from people I’m already following. Then you’ll appear in the feeds of people who follow you, when they click on the Following tab. Using the following tab is a great way to engage with people you follow by repining their stuff or commenting on their pins. GO and show the love! You also have the chance of appearing in the ‘related pins’ section. If someone clicks on a pin to view it and decides it’s not what they’re looking for, further suggestions will appear at the bottom - that could be you! I feel like there’s SO MUCH more we can cover and I already see this episode become too beefy, so let’s leave it here and I’ll continue it next week. TO summarise though, and to give you homework… Go and change to a business account Claim your website and Insta etc Put your keywords related to your blog or business in your profile description Install the save button on your blog Enable rich pins Write descriptions on your blog images And if you fancy a little challenge - why not create 5 new boards that are relevant to your content and pin at least 40 pins (mix in some of your content) and come and share them on the Facebook group - I’ll start a thread where we can give each other feedback on our profiles and boards. You could also start a board that is specifically for your blog posts, podcast episodes, YouTube videos, Insta images etc! I’ll come back next week and go into… What makes a good pin How to get the fancy profile cover art What the eff featured boards are and how to organise them A basic pinning strategy to get you started Some info on how to find keywords How to categorise and organise your boards Some info on the types of boards and what they’re useful for And then a few insider tips from Pinterest themselves! If you have any questions please feel free to ask in the Facebook group - we’d love to have you, it’s Exciting Emails. Or come and say hi on Instagram or Twitter - @vixmeldrew And go right ahead and follow me on Pinterest - I’m /vixmeldrew on there! Until next time, BYEEEEEEE

The Ultimate Pinterest Marketing Guide: How to Improve Your Reach and Promote Your Brand If you still think Facebook and Twitter are the be-all and end-all of social media marketing tools, think again. Say “Hi” to your business’s new best friend – Pinterest. Pinterest pins are 100 times more spreadable than a tweet, with the retweet average hitting only 1.4%. And, as for Facebook, the half-life of a pin is 1,600 x longer than a Facebook post Since the recent Instagram purchase by Facebook, Pinterest has become the hot ticket item for business marketing. And that’s for good reason. If an increase of 27% in Pinterest accounts of Fortune 500 companies over the last year (including Exxon Mobile, Wal-Mart, and Apple) isn’t an indication that your business should be joining the 70 million total users, I don’t know what would be. Aside from feeding obsessions with exotic destiny vacations and gourmet food, the real strength of Pinterest is the integrated features of their business accounts. Join the 500,000 businesses with Pinterest for Business accounts, and you’ll get added marketing features to promote your brand on one of the fastest growing and insanely popular social media platforms. Pinterest for Business is Different from Your Personal Account: The Added Benefits: If you don’t have an account already, or if your account is personal, you’re going to need to sign up for an official Pinterest for Business account in order to tap into the full potential of Pinterest’s marketing potency. With your business account, you get: Different Terms of Service The terms of service are a little bit different for a business, so be sure to read through them. The difference comes from the fact that you are using the account commercially. You’ve still got the same Acceptable Use Policy and Pin Etiquette Policy, but there are a few guidelines for commercial use: Don’t promote spam, “such as asking participants to comment repeatedly.” Don’t “run a sweepstakes where each pin, repin, or like represents an entry. [or] ask pinners to vote with a repin or like.” Don’t run contests, sweepstakes or promotions “too often.” Don’t “suggest that Pinterest sponsors or endorses” your business. Pinterest Analytics Pinterest Analytics is one of the most awesome features of a Pinterest for Business account. When you verify your account, you get access to important tracking information. You’ll be able to see which strategies and content work so you can constantly improve your marketing. How to Create Popular Pins Your pins can get the kind of engagement for your business if you execute them right. Pinterest has been described by Social Media Examiner as a visual search engine. So, just like when you are writing your blog articles or posting on your business Instagram account, you want your content to be searchable. If it’s not searchable, then it won’t be found or seen. Therefore, before you grab that mouse to start pinning, you have to understand the Pinterest culture, a.k.a. what your followers search for, and learn how to create popular pins. Most Popular Categories If you know what the most popular Pinterest categories are, then you’ll have a better idea of which boards will work for your business. while 80% of users are female, men are starting to catch the Pinterest bug. In the past year, the number of male users has DOUBLED, making them Pinterest’s fastest growing demographic. Images that Work One quick perusal of Pinterest, and it’s clear how visual a site it is. With such an emphasis on the visual impact, your images are the cornerstone of any pin you share. What makes the top Pinterest pins so popular? Optimal Pin Size All pins have the same width, with an unlimited length. A good size to shoot for is 736×1102 pixels for a typical pin. It’s not too big, and not too small. Canva’s Pinterest template is this size and makes sizing your images a lot easier. Instructographics Sometimes it’s good to take advantage of the longer length allotment. The term instructographic was coined by Pinterest, and is another name for infographic. These are popular because of their DIY, how-to nature, which we know is the second most popular category! How to Get Your Pins Seen and Shared: Optimising Your Pins It’s one thing to create a fantastic pin, but it’s a whole other game to get it seen and shared. No one is going to find your pin if you don’t optimize it for engagement. Make It Easy to Pin Content from Your Sites Add a hovering Pin It button to any image on any of your sites or your phone app through Pinterest directly. Or, if you use WordPress, there’s a Pinterest Pin It Hover button plugin. These simple-to-integrate buttons direct your site visitors to either check out your Pinterest account or actually pin your site’s content on their own accounts. If you don’t have these buttons, there is little chance your site will bring ANY interaction with your Pinterest account. Connect with Your Other Social Media Platforms You don’t want to have to start over with followers when you create a new social media account. It’s super easy to connect your Twitter and Facebook accounts to your Pinterest for Business account. This will help you get more followers by tapping into the ones you already have on other platforms. It also will help spread your content across platforms so more eyeballs see it. And, it will add Twitter and Facebook buttons to your Pinterest account. To connect your social media accounts: Go to your account settings Go to the social networks section Connect your Facebook and Twitter accounts Share Pins in Your Newsletter Take the difficulty out of getting people to find your pins by sending the pins straight to them! Your newsletter is the perfect place to throw in a couple of your latest pins and direct subscribers to your Pinterest account. Try this: “Our most popular pins from this week. Head on over to our Pinterest for even more!” SEO for Pinterest You have to use some SEO strategy to get your pins discovered by the eyes of your target audience. But, don’t worry, it doesn’t take much to optimize your pins in regard to Pinterest searches. Just follow these steps: Step 1: Research keywords. Try a tool like Google AdWords Keyword Planner to find popular keywords related to your business and your pins. Step 2: Add your keyword/keywords to your pin titles. Step 3: Add your keyword/keywords to your pin descriptions. Step 4: Add your keyword/keywords to your pin image file names. As with any SEO you use, make sure not to sound too “keywordy.” Don’t go too crazy and add three keywords to your title and descriptions like a robot would. Optimize and still sound human by simply adding a strong keyword within the right context. Use a Call-to-Pin In the same way you use a call-to-action in your ad copy, a call-to-pin will significantly increase the engagement of your pins. In fact, you’ll get 80% more engagement with a CTP. In your pin’s description, add a little something like: “Repin to your own inspiration board.” Engage to Build Relationships and Gain New Followers Now that you know what kinds of pins are popular and how to get your pins seen, the next step in Pinterest marketing is to use your pins to build relationships with followers and influencers that will grow your reach. As we all know, more reach = more success. Knowing what users look for when following other accounts will allow you to give them what they want and, in turn, grow your following. A little mind-reading never hurt anyone. A recent study found that the three main factors that Pinterest users take into consideration in the should-I-follow-or-not decision-making process are: how many accounts you are following / are following you how many pins you have how many boards you have To be on top of those factors and build relationships to grow your reach, you need to: Post Frequently To get more Pinterest followers, you should post between 5-30 new pins every day. Make sure you are not just repinning the content of others, but also pinning your own unique pins with your own content. Warning! Avoid a major Pinterest faux pas: don’t pin all 30 new pins within a 5-minute span. Spread your pinning throughout the day. Tip! You can create a Secret Board and collect pins to save time. Load up your 20 or so pins in the morning, and keep them on your secret board. Throughout the day, return to the board and grab the pins you want to pin on other “live boards.” Engage with Followers, Reply to Comments Just like you respond to tweets, Facebook posts, and Instagram comments, engage with your followers directly by answering their questions and responding to their comments. Go the extra mile and address them directly, using their names to really take your customer service to the next level. Comment on Your Followers’ Pins Engagement is a two-way street. You need to reach out to your followers’ boards as well. Leave comments on their pins so they’ll feel some love. Their followers will see your brand, too! Follow and Engage with Popular Boards The best way to see successful Pinterest strategy in action is to follow and engage with popular boards. You can learn a lot from the bigger players. See what kinds of pins they pin, what kinds of boards they have, and how much engaging they do. Your goal is to get on that level! If you are commenting on these popular pins, your brand name will be seen by the huge number of people who follow those boards. Tip! It’s a good idea to follow popular boards because they are relevant to your industry and business as opposed to “just because” they are the most popular. If your business has literally nothing to do with wedding fashion, you can do yourself a favor and follow the boards that have a following closer to yours. Those are the people you want to connect with anyway. Invite Others to Pin on Your Boards Build Influencer Relationships Reach a wider audience and gain more followers by reaching out to influencers in your field. Start by following their boards, repinning their pins, and leaving engaging comments on their pins. Once you’ve dropped your name that way, you can initiate a bigger collaboration. Ask if they will post on a board of yours, or offer to contribute to one of their boards. Offer ideas for their boards and show that you are familiar with their content when initiating collaboration, and you’ll be closer to that “yes” you’re looking for. How to Promote Your Brand Successfully: Pinterest Strategies Mix Up Your Content The rule for all social media is to mix up your content. You will lose the interest of your followers and lose your chances of gaining any new ones if your content is static and not diverse enough. So, please whatever you do, don’t just post product photos. Diversity of your pins is a hugely important factor when users were deciding whether to follow an account. So, throw in some other boards that give your followers added value in order to avoid coming off as overly salesy. Include a Direct Link to Your Site Not all of your pins are going to make sense as Rich Pins. (Product photos, events, and articles benefit from the added information provided with Rich Pins, but not all of your content will.) It’s all about context. Put Your Most Popular Boards on Top Over time, you’ll be able to see which boards are more popular and get more engagement. Put your best foot forward and move these boards to the top of your page so when users come to your page, they will see your best material. Create a Board Just for Blog Posts Grab all those article Rich Pins you have, and organise them into their very own board! You’ll want to put this board at the top of your page so your followers will see it first thing. This will help draw traffic to your site and make it easier for users to find your content since it’s all in one easy-to-find-board. They will thank you. Track Your Success and Learn the Strategies that Work with Pinterest Analytics One of the newest features on Pinterest for Business is the super helpful Pinterest Analytics. This feature is only for business accounts and allows you to see: Which pins and boards from your profile people love most What people like to save from your website Who your Pinterest audience is, including their gender, location, and other interests Which devices people use when they’re pinning your stuff How adding the Pin It button to your website leads to referral traffic from Pinterest And, there is another reason verifying your account is a good idea. It will help you gain authority and build trust. When Pinterest users see that little red check mark next to your website, they know you’re legit. You can verify your website in the settings section by adding a meta tag. This will give you a verification badge, and you’ll be official. If you choose not to verify your site, you can still include a link to your site on your page, but you won’t be able to use Pinterest Analytics. Don’t miss out on the crucial information Pinterest Analytics will give you. Verify your account!
