On the latest episode of the semi-semi-regular Matador Revisionist History Podcast, we are joined by Bardo Pond founder and guitarist Michael Gibbons, Carbon Records founder, longtime WAYO host and Bardo-ologist Joe Tunis, and our podcast host Matt Sweeney (Chavez, The Hard Quartet). The conversation marks the 25th anniversary reissue of ‘Set and Setting,' plus the double LP rarities compilation ‘Melt Away,' both out TODAY. Michael, Joe, and Matt dig into the earliest days of Bardo Pond— fighting (and then bonding) over a Lester Bowie LP with bassist Clint Takeda, opening for Smog and Royal Trux at Philadelphia's Khyber Pass, and eventually even tuning their instruments.

Royal Trux were king and queen of the scuzzrock prom when they got signed to Virgin Records in 1995. Two years later, Virgin couldn't get rid of them fast enough and RTX made their best album on their way out the door - Accelerator - a masterpiece molded out of the sludge of confusion.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a reunion of sorts, in celebration of a new release of old music: It's David Pajo, Cassie Berman, and Tim Furnish. These three met in the fertile Louisville scene of the early 1990s. Pajo played guitar in the wildly influential band Slint and went on to play with Tortoise, Royal Trux, Stereolab, and Interpol at various times over the years—he's currently a member of Gang Of Four. But the subject of this conversation is Pajo's sorta-solo career, which went through various M-names, from just M to Papa M and Aerial M. As Aerial M, Pajo brought on some friends for a brief time to tour Europe, where they recorded a Peel Session—more on that in a minute. The friends that Pajo recruited to play in the Aerial M live band were Tim Furnish, whose legendary Louisville band Crain had broken up recently—and who has since recorded experimental rock with the band Parlour—as well as Cassie Berman and Tony Bailey. Berman had been kicking around in Louisville bands, too, and she would go on to join Silver Jews, the band fronted by her husband, David Berman. Drummer Tony Bailey, as you'll hear, played in about a million bands in the area—he died, sadly, in 2009. The reason for today's reunion of the lineup that burned bright but quick is the release of Aerial M's new Peel Sessions album. In case you're unfamiliar, BBC DJ John Peel used to invite the coolest bands of his day—from the ‘70s into the 2000s—to record a few songs specifically for his show, many of which were later released with the same striking artwork. In 1998, Aerial M stopped by and recorded three songs that would turn out quite different to the versions Pajo crafted in the studio, and would really be the only evidence that this lineup left of its existence. Pajo was recently reminded of this session, so he set about tracking down the tapes, sprucing them up, and handing them over to Drag City for a proper release—including an amazing replica of those original John Peel Sessions sleeves. Check out the song “Vivea” right here. I don't think these three had sat down for a chat in a while, so it's like sitting in on a reunion with three people who have a lot of fond memories. They talk about their '98 tour, including the recording of this record, plus they get into fond remembrances of Tony Bailey, racing Stereolab to the record store, and even what they're up to now: Just a few days before this recording, Cassie Berman participated in a tribute to David Berman on the anniversary of his untimely passing, and Furnish has been working on some cool-sounding visual art for other bands. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to David Pajo, Cassie Berman, and Tim Furnish for chatting. Sleepyhead recorded their forthcoming sixth album, New Alchemy, at the legendary Boston area recording studio Q Division with esteemed producer and Q Division co-founder Jon Lupfer at the helm. They are releasing the album August 19 as a digital download and via streaming platforms to be followed by a release on 12” vinyl LP.  They plan to play as many shows as they can manage after that! New Alchemy features Sleepyhead founders, drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke as well as bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever, who joined the trio in 2004, a few years after the other two had moved to Boston. Many of the songs conjure the subtly infectious laissez-faire sounds of pre-Grunge Indie Rock the embrace early on in their career with a handful evoking classic Laurel Canyon Country-Rock and other 70's FM staples. The title track to New Alchemy was inspired by the exploits of the New Alchemy Institute, a utopian endeavor founded by idealistic scientists in the 1970's in Falmouth, Massachusetts, the hometown of Sleepyhead guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. Sleepyhead was formed in a basement room at NYU's Brittany dorm in the fall of 1989 by drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally, bassist Mike Galinsky and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. They released their first 7" single, the Kramer-produced "Play," in 1991 on Picture Book Artifact. Four full-length albums followed, on three different independent record labels. Punk Rock City USA was released by Slumberland Records in 1993, followed by Starduster (Homestead 1994), Communist Love Songs (Homestead 1996), and The Brighter Shore (Sealed Fate 1999). They toured the United States and Europe throughout the nineties, sharing the stage with such legendary bands as Polvo, Half Japanese, Yo La Tengo, The Grifters, The Dambuilders, Nation of Ulysses, Helium, Royal Trux, Antietam, Luna, Versus, The Magnetic Fields, and Dungbeetle. Around the time their fourth album was released in 1999, Rachael and Chris got married, and Mike Galinsky moved on to a successful career in filmmaking. Dan Cuddy (The Special Pillow, ex-Hypnolovewheel) joined Chris and Rachael on bass. With Dan on bass, Sleepyhead did some touring for The Brighter Shore and began writing new songs. Rachael and Chris moved from New York to Boston in 2002 after having their first child. They had another kid in 2005. By this time, they had begun recording a new album, with Dan on bass, with producer Mike Deming (Pernice Brothers, Apples in Stereo, Beachwood Sparks, Lilys), at Deming's famed Studio 45 in Hartford, and subsequently Enfield, CT. In 2004, bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever joined the band, and they started playing shows in Boston, Providence, and New York whenever they got the chance. In April 2013, this new lineup of Sleepyhead went into Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA to record the last three songs for their long-time-coming fifth album, Wild Sometimes, which was released on renowned Chicago indie Carrot Top Records on April 8, 2014. They played a bunch of shows in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast to celebrate the release of Wild Sometimes in 2014, and then started writing a whole bunch of new songs with Derek. In the Spring of 2018, Drawing Room Records released a well-received deluxe double vinyl LP/digital reissue of Starduster and Communist Love Songs called Future Exhibit Goes Here.         Sleepyhead's info     http://www.sleepyheadrockband.com/Sle

We had the pleasure of interviewing NOBRO over Zoom video! Montreal's fierce rock quartet NOBRO released a new single "Better Each Day" via Dine Alone Records, mixed by two-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Dave Schiffman (Vampire Weekend, Adele). The anthemic track kicks off with the powerful set of vocals — "I spend my whole life running away…" — before culminating into the pounding drums, shredding riffs, and blistering vocals that NOBRO have become known for. A video directed and produced by Jeremy Shantz, Jenn Wade, and Daniel Esteban, and shot in the band's hometown of Montreal, will be released on October 13."I was experiencing some kind of crisis at the time of writing 'Better Each Day,' and if I remember correctly, it was a 'writing music' one," reflects vocalist and bassist Kathryn McCaughey. "There are times when songs come streaming out of you as though they wrote themselves into existence, and other times it can be as challenging as getting two purebred Persian cats to mate. I was sitting in our producer's studio when he suggested I might like a little jingle he wrote for a commercial that never got used. I thought it was dope and voila, this song was born. One day, you're punk as fuck, and the next, you're playing old unused car commercial jingles." New tour dates have been announced for NOBRO, who join Tokyo Police Club in the U.S. this November, then Billy Talent in 2022 for 10 dates across Canada.Featuring McCaughey's confident, cocky yell and blistering bass lines, Sarah Dion's signature backbone drums (McCaughey claims drummer Sarah Dion will "go down in history as one of the best drummers in the entire world"), killer riffs from guitarist Karolane Carbonneau, and sweeping keyboard licks and bongo solos from master of percussion Lisandre Bourdages, NOBRO have become a rock 'n' roll force to be reckoned with."I wanted to play this type of music but there wasn't a lot of women who wanted to play it. I wanted to be in the most kick-ass all-female band ever," says McCaughey. Resilient and tough, NOBRO are aware that they will face skepticism as part of the omnipresent sexism in the scene they inhabit, but that only spurs them on. "We said we would do it one way, and so we made sure that we were always doing it that way," she continues.McCaughey founded the band almost as a challenge to herself when the aftermath of a relationship with a prominent Montreal musician made her determined to be "more than just a footnote on this person's Wikipedia page." She realized she possessed all the tools to express herself in her own voice and to shape her own destiny. All that was needed were fellow musicians who felt the same. As fate has it, they were all nearby shaping their own destiny, mastering their instruments, ready to shred as hard as they could, and were ignited when they found each other. With co-writes with members of METZ and Fast Friends under their belts, as well as an EP titled Sick Hustle released in 2020 on Dine Alone Records, NOBRO are well on their way to achieving their goal. Their music video for "Don't Die," animated by Greg Doble, amassed a number of accolades including: Best Short Animation at Monster Flix Awards, Best Music Video at Hollywood Horror Fest, Best Music Video at Another Hole In The Head, Best Horror Music Video at Horror Bowl Movie Awards, Silver Award at Los Angeles Animation Film Festival, and Honorable Mention at Santiago Horror. Inspired by the likes of Jay Reatard, The Damned, and Royal Trux to name a few, NOBRO are unafraid to wear their influences on their sleeve. They cut their teeth on the road with bands like FIDLAR, PUP, and Charly Bliss, and more recently played their biggest venues to date on an arena tour with Alexisonfire and The Distillers. Call them punk rock if you like, but its long-held perceptions are just some of the things NOBRO are here to challenge — in the loudest and most exciting way possible. We want to hear from you! For Episode 65 I finally got to talk to David Pajo. David was, of course, the incredibly influential guitar player in the band Slint,. David later went on to play with Will Oldham, The For Carnation, Tortoise, Stereolab, Royal Trux, King Kong, Bush League, Zwan, Peggy Honeywell, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and, most recently, Interpol. Despite his incredibly prolific musical career, he still struggled with depression. In the winter of 2015, he attempted to take his own life. As a survivor he has made it his mission to talk frankly and openly about his depression and how grateful he is that he survived. I am so happy that we had this conversation. We talked about how Slint's record 'Spiderland' absolutely spun out a generation of indie rock nerds like me, about our mutual friend Lance Bangs, about his life since his suicide attempt, and about espresso for maybe longer than anyone could possible care about.

Low Profile with Markly Morrison

Over the course of the last four decades, Kentucky-born David Grubbs’ musical activity has ranged from hardcore punk to the fine arts. In addition to his work as a solo artist, David is noted for his groundbreaking avant-pop group Gastr Del Sol and his collaborative efforts with a diverse group of influential musicians including The Red Krayola, Pauline Oliveros, Will Oldham, Tony Conrad, Royal Trux and John Fahey. In the 1980s Lousville KY punk scene he was a founding member of the band Squirrel Bait (look for their new jeans). David has also published three books in the past decade: “Records Ruin the Landscape,” about John Cage and early experimental music, and two book-length poems, “Now That The Audience Is Assembled” and “The Voice in the Headphones,” all available from Duke University Press. He’s a Professor of Music at the City University of New York, and his latest album is an improvised collaboration with the Tokyo based Taku Unami. I spoke with David about all of this and more in late July. If you haven’t yet, you can subscribe to this show wherever you get podcasts. Cinco de Mayo – War  Once you hear the lyrics,  you’ll realize that this is not about the Battle of Puebla in 1862.   A Summer Thing – Cayucas  Indie pop from Santa Monica.   Salad Days – Mac DeMarco This Canadian rocker’s been called “rude, crude and obnoxious,” but he sounds like pussycat on this track.    (Give Me Back My) Bunty Bunty – The Bombay Royale Don’t be surprised if this band made it’s way into a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack.   The Jitterbug Waltz – Fats Waller The Fat Man at his creative best, this 1942 lullaby brought a little lighthearted respite to a nation at War.     I Got Stoned And I Missed It – Shel Silverstein  What else would you expect from the guy who wrote “A Boy Named Sue” and “Cover of The Rolling Stone?”    Sing A Simple Song – Sly & The Family Stone B-side to ‘Everyday People’ – could have been the A-side.   Highway Down – Black Bananas  Electric rock funk from Jennifer Herrema’s new outfit Black Bananas. Not like the Royal Trux at all.   So It Goes – Nick Lowe  Traditional pub rock from the master of pop – also the first single released on Stiff Records.   California Dreamin' – Bobby Womack R.I.P. This show features several new releases from March 29. More information about the records is below.*Update!* I think I mentioned in this show that All Eternals Deck was the Mountain Goats third LP, which is obviously incorrect (ouch, indie cred!). What I meant to and should have said was that this is the third LP with a more rock-oriented trio. Sorry, ya'll.Beat City Radio #583 PlaylistDownload show (right-click, save target as): Beat City Radio #583Stream: A Few of This Week's New Releases The Mountain Goats released All Eternals Deck, which takes its name from a fictional set of tarot cards. The album shows that John Darnielle's songwriting is still quite solid and the rhythm section gets a boost from Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster.  Stream the album on NPR's website. Favorite tracks: Damn These Vampires, High Hawk Season, The Autopsy Garland, For Charles Bronson, Birth of Serpents.Hosannas is a duo from Portlandia who create sweeping and beautiful experimental dream pop tinged with cosmic spaghetti western sounds and shoegazing tendencies. They are back with a FREE EP, Thug Life Nicole, that follows the release of their third album, Together late last year. Find out more about the band and download the EP from the link above.Bonus mp3s:   Hosannas - Obsolete PeopleHosannas - Walroos From the Moon Duo website: "Moon Duo was formed by Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada in San Francisco in 2009. Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, and Cluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, and vocals, the Duo plays space against form to create a primeval sound experience." This experimental psychedelic duo dropped Mazes this week on Sacred Bones Records.Bonus mp3s:Moon Duo - MazesMoon Duo - ScarsMoon Duo - When You Cut The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are a shoegazing bliss/gliss rock quartet from Brooklyn, NY. They released their debut self-titled album a couple of years ago to much critical acclaim. That record was very much rooted in the 80s, with elements of post-punk, dream pop, twee, and the C86 sound. It was a very saccharine heart-on-the-sleeve album, but balanced those elements with some darker tones and distortion. The sophomore album, Belong out on Slumberland Records, builds on the first album's elements and takes them further with a BIG and slick wall of sound production style, courtesy of Flood and Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode). The overall sound of this album is early 90s guitar pop-rock, though there are some synth-washed tracks that recall Modern English and The Cure. Belong is a big-sounding, shimmering and slick, heart-breakingly blissful record that glides along beautifully and is enjoyable, though cloying at times. Favorite tracks: Heart in Your Heartbreak, My Terrible Friend,Anne With an E, The Body.Bonus mp3:The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - I Wanna Go All the Way (B-side of the Belong 7" vinyl single). We also played a new one from Swedish indie rockers Peter Bjorn and John's new album, Gimme Some and a couple from Dirty Beaches. We'll feature Dirty Beaches in another post.Enjoy!Bonus Video: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Young Adult Friction from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart out on Slumberland Records in 2009.
