Ryota Tanozaki didn't pivot because of burnout—he pivoted to avoid a trap. While managing a turnaround project in rural Japan, he saw the writing on the wall: stay too long, and his world would shrink. Instead, he chose to bet on himself. He went global, earned an MBA from Chicago Booth, built a career across Facebook and Tabist (backed by Softbank Japan), and led a hospitality startup through one of the toughest periods in travel history. But his secret wasn't speed—it was clarity. In this episode, Ryota shares how to spot when your career path is narrowing, why perseverance matters more than perfection, and how real reinvention often starts with one question: what if I don't want this to be it?>>The Moment He Almost Settled“I started thinking—what if my career ends in this rural city?”While leading a department store turnaround in a quiet town, Ryota realized he might be stuck in a shrinking path.

The extreme heat wave in western Europe over the last couple of weeks is just one of many in the Northern Hemisphere in 2022. How is global warming changing the atmosphere to make heat waves more frequent and more intense? We talk to climatologists Hannah Cloke, Friederike Otto and Efi Rousi. If we want to stabilise global warming to two degrees by the end of the century, how are we going to do that? One novel idea is to harness the world's vast railway infrastructure and equip freight and passenger trains with an additional special wagon or two. These extra cars would be designed to suck carbon dioxide out of the air, liquify it and transport it to sequestration sites. Critically all the energy to capture the carbon dioxide comes free from regenerative braking on the trains. University of Toronto chemist Geoff Ozin and Eric Bachman, founder of the start-up CO2 Rail, explain the vision. On the 40th anniversary of the International Whaling Commissions announcing an end to commercial whaling, we hear from Greenpeace co-founder Rex Weyler about the high seas campaign in the 1970s that helped prevent the extinction of the great whales. He talks about the contribution to the cause made by the discovery of whale song, and the release of humpback whale recordings as a commercial disc. And, you have probably experienced an ‘earworm' - a catchy bit of music that plays round and round in your head and won't go away – at least for a short while. But why did it pop up in the first place and how did it get stuck? CrowdScience listener Ryota in Japan wants us to dig into earworms, so presenter Datshiane Navanayagam bravely puts on her headphones to immerse herself in the world of sounds that stick. She meets with a composer of children's songs as well as music psychologists to find out if there is a special formula to creating catchy songs and probes if this musical brain quirk serves any useful purpose. Datshiane then explores whether some people are more prone to catching earworms than others. Finally, for those who find this phenomenon disturbing - she asks is there a good way of getting rid of them? On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are trading children like they're freaking Yu-Gi-Oh cards up in this place in the 2013 film from Hirokazu Kore-eda, Like Father, Like Son. We watched and talked about this film at length and I'm still baffled by some of the decisions that these supposed adults took with their children's lives. How do you look at the baby you've raised into a real walking and talking person and say, “Nah, there's someone else out there that I'm going to choose. You don't understand, kid, he's got my blood.” But here we are, and that's the exact movie we talked about in this episode. Granted, the other parents weren't so keen on the idea of upending their the lives of their kids, so I think they get a pass. It's a real nature vs. nurture situation here. Are you the product of your genetics or are you what your parents and community made you? Surely, it's a combination of the two. It can't be completely one or the other. This film asks a tough question: Would you give up the child you raised if you found out that they weren't your biological child? Would you take on the life of someone else's kid out of some misplaced sense of vanity? Or would you be a better parent than Ryota and come to appreciate the life you helped develop a lot sooner than that doofus did? Whatever the case may be, it sure as heck makes for a complex and stellar film. There are no mushy retrospectives for Hooks & Runs' 1st Anniversary episode. That would take foresight and planning -- nobody's got time for that! Instead Eric and Craig dove right in to current events -- the Grammy Awards, Stephen Strasburg on the shelf (where else?), Luis Guillorme's 22-pitch Spring Training at bat, MiLB experimental rules, the NCAA brackets and MLB stadium capacities -- Eric and Craig offered opinions on them all. Some are half-baked; others are a bit over done. YOU be the judge which are which. In Chapter Two, Eric and Craig welcome Ryota Nishino, Site Expert at Sodo Mojo, Fansided's Seattle Mariners blog. The AL West is the podcast's favorite division and the Mariners our second favorite team in that division. The Mariners are knee deep in a rebuild with one of baseball's best farm systems. Kyle Lewis claimed last year's Rookie of the Year Award and the team as more than one candidate for the honor in 2021. Nishino gave us a tour of this year's squad -- still at least a year away, but poised to make a move, possibly challenging for third. The team's achilles heel appears to be its shaky rotation and an unsettled bullpen -- not a recipe for long-term success, but hey, it's early, right? As for the division, Nishino likes the Angels. The consensus picks are the Astros closely followed by the A's with many picking the Angels as best of the rest, so this is something of an outlier pick. You never know with those Pacific Northwest guys. We all agreed the division lacks a dominate team -- 90 wins may well win this division outright in 2021. The podcast's series looking at each division continues next week.

Was tun?

Justin is then given three meals and must guess which meal, of the three, did not originate from the specified country, this week’s countries are Liberia and Australia (Taste around the World). For the discussion part of the podcast Drew, Ryota, and Justin discuss what NBA free agents could help an NBA team during the shortened season and in the future, players like JR Smith, Joakim Noah, and Isaiah Thomas are discussed. As well, the three pick their favorite teams to make it to the 2020 NBA Finals and give their sleeper picks (13:31).
This week’s Weekly Rundown includes Buzzer Beaters where Drew quizzes Ryota on teams players have played for (6:34). Drew turns back the clock to the 2005-2006 Miami Heat Team (0:35). Drew and Ryota discuss the impact Ken Griffey Jr. had on the game of baseball and the city of Seattle. As well, the two debate other influential and impactful athletes including Micheal Jordon, Lebron James, Ichiro, Tom Brady, and Sue Bird. Should college athletes get paid? This has been a major controversy for many years and with the allegations about Zion and Duke University recently, we thought it would be a good topic to talk about. California and Florida have passed laws to allow student athletes to earn compensation based off of their name, image and likeness, which is one way a student-athlete could potentially make money in the future. But, compensating players is complicated and we dive into the murky waters.
