Off the final weekend of February, host T.J. Rives and Dan Rafael, insider of BigFightWeekend.com are back to give you a full recap of the Tommy Fury defeat of Jake Paul Sunday night in Saudi Arabia. Plus, Saturday night's Subriel Matias TKO win for the IBF 140 lb. world title in Minnesota and more! It's the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap" Podcast. First up, the guys discuss Matias beating Jeremias Ponce in a tough 5 round battle to become a junior welterweight world champ. Did Ponce punch himself out early? What's Matias' short term future at 19-1 with 19 KOs? Dan gives his insight. He also has more on the undercard with Jamal "Shango" James and Elvis Rodriguez winning. Then, the guys get to the most prominent bout of the weekend and that was the cruiserweight main event for Queensberry Promotions and MVP Promotions as Tommy Fury, the half brother of WBC heavyweight champ Tommy Fury, defeated Jake Paul by eight round split decision. How did Fury get it done and how humbling is this for Paul, who had been on a real momentum roll for the last two years building his name as a boxer at the lower level. On the undercard, Badou Jack became a three division world champ with a dominant showing over WBC cruiserweight champ "Junior" Makabu in a 12th round TKO. At 39 Jack deserves a tremendous amount of credit, but Dan says to "hold up" on the talk of him being a hall of fame fighter. Finally the guys go over some news of the week regarding Keyshawn Davis, Ryota Murata of Japan and Jack Catterall of England. And, then it's nostalgia time as it's an anniversary of Mike Tyson kayoing British heavyweight icon at that time Frank Bruno. And, a dark day for boxing nearly 30 years ago with Nigel Benn scoring a devastating KO of Gerald McClellan that left have severely brain injured for the last three decades. Dan and T.J. talk how you, the fight fans, might wan to help McClellan's family! It's all on the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap" and make sure to follow/subscribe to the Big Fight Weekend Podcast feed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!! #NBA #UFC273 #Jacksonville #Masters #MLB #F1 This was an incredibly diverse sports weekend that had the NBA, NHL, MLB, Masters golf, F1 racing, Boxing and the UFC all in action! We welcomed back our resident analyst Jason Cameron back after a three week hiatus because of a car accident he was involved in. Luckily he is on the mend and still can bring us great takes on his top sports. With Jason being an expert in some of these sports we had a spirited conversation that you are sure to enjoy! The NBA's 75th diamond anniversary regular season just wrapped up yesterday and now the playin tournament starts tomorrow to complete the top eight in each conference. Cameron made all of his predictions and gave his insight on the matchups. We also were able to breakdown the series that have already been set in the East and West. This is shaping up to be an epic playoffs that will be fun to watch and consume! UFC 273 was held in Jacksonville, Florida and had quite the memorable card. Their were two championship fights on the docket but they were upstaged by a welterweight battle between #2 ranked Gilbert Burns and #11 ranked Khamzat Chimaev . Chimaev had already set some UFC records and was on a meteoric rise up the ranks. He finally got a battle worthy of his skill and toughness and it was the fight of the night and lived up to the hype it received. Both Champions retained their belts in the main and co-main events. Alex Volkanovski steamrolled Chang Sung Jung (The Korean Zombie) to keep the featherweight strap. Aljamain Sterling won by split decision to dispatch Petr Yan and continue his reign as the king of the Bantamweights. It was a very close fight with Sterling getting the nod three round to 2 on two judges cards. The rest of the card was fun and had some intriguing battles and matchups that we broke down. We finished the podcast with some boxing news. Triple G Genady Golovkin had a huge win over Ryota Murata to hold up his end of the bargain in a possible trilogy fight with Canelo Alvarez. Cinnamon faces Dmitry Bivol on May 7th and if he wins the promoters just need to put these two warriors together in the ring asap! The Errol Spence Jr. fight with Yordenis Ugas takes place in Texas this Saturday. The winner likely faces Terrence Crawford in a superfight to try and become the undisputed champion at 147 lbs.
It was an exciting Saturday of boxing and host T.J. Rives and BigFightWeekend.com's insider, Dan Rafael are back on the maiden voyage of the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap Podcast" to discuss it all. What did Dan think of Gennady Golovkin's TKO Middleweight title win early Saturday in Japan over Ryota Murata? And, now that Triple G cleared that hurdle, what are his prospects in a third bout with Canelo Alvarez? Next, the guys discuss the Ryan Garcia Lightweight win in San Antonio over Ghanan Emmanuel Tagoe over 12 rounds. How did Ryan look to Dan and how much was influenced/taken away from his chances to score an impressive KO, etc. by the fact that Tagoe was really fighting but more in survival mode? Finally, the fight of the week, at least in terms of action, was the Sebastian Fundora-Erickson Lubin brawl in Las Vegas Saturday night. That saw both fighters down and eventually Fundora stopping Lubin in the Jr. Middleweight contest after 9 rounds. What did Dan think of the performance by the unbeaten Fundora and did Lubin's veteran trainer do the right thing by him by going ahead and stopping the bout due to his facial swelling, etc.? Dan gives insight on that aspect and his thoughts on Fundora's fighting style at a massive 6'6" height for a Jr. Middleweight. Lots to talk about this week about the cage fights (but don't, worry not much from the borderline appalling undercard of UFC 273) as Aljamain Sterling pulled off the best win of his career against one of the most skilled fighters operating today--and his nemesis--Petr Yan, and Khamzat Chimaev showed once and for all he is no joke by taking a big step up in competition against Gilbert Burns. The best pound-for-pound fighter around Alexander Volkanovski also gets a mention. Over in the boxing ring, Gennady Golovkin won a hard-fought battle with Olympic gold medalist Ryota Murata. Is Triple-G shot? Is the third fight with Canelo Alvarez at best a waste of time and at worst dangerous matchmaking? Am I just being a sad old goat? Multiple sources have confirmed to BoxingScene.com that DAZN executive chairman John Skipper met recently with Canelo Alvarez in San Diego and offered new incentives for a commitment from the Mexican superstar to fight Gennadiy Golovkin on September 12 of this year in conjunction with Mexican Independence Day Weekend.Skipper proposed a three-fight package within the framework of DAZN's 11-fight, $365 million contract with Canelo.Fight #1 would be against Billy Joe Saunders in Las Vegas on May 2. The September 12 fight against Golovkin would take place at a site to be determined, most likely Las Vegas or AT&T Stadium in Texas. The third fight now under consideration would match Canelo against Ryota Murata in Japan. That fight (which is the most speculative of the three) could occur as early as December of this year if Canelo came out of the Golovkin fight relatively unscathed.https://www.patreon.com/ThaboxingvoiceBUY THA BOXING VOICE T-SHIRT HERE http://thaboxingvoice.com/storePLEASE SUPPORT!!!
