Join Dan Sullivan, Shannon Waller, and industry veteran Paul Colligan as they dive into the business of podcasting, from where it was to where it's going. With over 20 years of trailblazing experience, Paul shares secrets to podcasting success and the mindsets that separate the amateurs from the pros. Learn how to create a hit show and leverage this booming medium to skyrocket your business influence and growth. Here's some of what you'll learn in this episodeWhat it was like in the early days of podcasting. The factors that led to podcasting becoming what it is today. What entrepreneurs love about podcasting.Dan and Shannon's early experiences with podcasting. How podcasts let you find people who share your mindset and values. The type of people who are plugged into podcasting.Predictions on the future of podcasts. Show Notes: It takes less than five minutes to submit your podcast to Audible for free. And you're in the directory less than 10 minutes later. It's always mindset that stops people from trying something new. The value of the content needs to be understood as greater than its packaging. The best thing about podcasting is the speed of creation. It's easy to tell when a podcaster is following a script. In a good podcast, you don't know what the second question will be until you've asked the first question. If you try to control the experience of a podcast, you lose the authenticity of the end product. Listeners feel like they have a personal relationship with podcasters. Podcasting has had a profound impact on how politicians speak. People now use the podcast standard for judging all public speaking. Podcasts are only popular in countries where they have cell phones. The only problem with new media is when you treat it like old media. Resources: The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan and Ben HardyPodcast: Podcast Payoffs with Dan Sullivan and Gord VickmanPodcast: 10xTalk with Dan Sullivan and Joe PolishPodcast: Shannon Waller's Team SuccessThe Team Success Handbook by Shannon WallerAI As Your Teammate by Evan RyanWho Not How by Dan Sullivan and Ben Hardydescript.comArticle: “Scary Times” Success Manual: How To Be A Leader When Times Get ToughArticle: Your Business Is A Theater Production: Your Back Stage Shouldn't Show On The Front StageThe Positive Focus®Once You're Lucky, Twice You're Good by Sarah Lacy

There's a long-standing narrative about hunter-gatherers in ancient times: Men ventured out for meat, while women largely stayed closer to home, foraging for plants and tending to children. As with most things, it almost certainly wasn't that black and white. Recent analyses of physiological and archaeological evidence, published in American Anthropologist, suggest that females hunted just as much as males did during the Paleolithic era. In fact, they were well-suited to long-distance hunting, largely thanks to the benefits of estrogen. Additionally, Neanderthal remains show a sex-equal distribution of bone injuries consistent with hunting. Both males and females were buried with similar items and weapons, suggesting that there was not such a stark division of labor.Ira is joined by Dr. Cara Ocobock, assistant professor in the department of anthropology at the University of Notre Dame, and Dr. Sarah Lacy, biological anthropologist at the University of Delaware, to discuss the details of their findings and why the myth of “Man the Hunter” has persisted for so long.Editor's note: Sex and gender are distinct descriptors—“sex” pertaining to the biological aspects of the human body (hormones, genitalia, etc.) and “gender” relating more to an individual's identity within a society. As Dr. Ocobock states in the segment, there are times when a strict sex binary makes sense related to study in a scientific realm, but even within those contexts, there can be large variability. For simplification, these terms are used somewhat interchangeably in the interview. To stay updated on all things science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Cancel culture is a term used to describe the phenomenon where people are more likely to cancel plans or transactions than to commit to them. The term was first coined by Cancel Culture author and entrepreneur Sarah Lacy in her book, “Pivotal: The Role of Luck in Success and Failure.” Cancel culture can have negative consequences for both individuals and businesses. For individuals, it can lead to missed opportunities and wasted time. For businesses, it can lead to lost sales and wasted resources. The root of cancel culture is fear. People are afraid of committing to anything because they are afraid of getting hurt. Burning out bright is what women do best. We are the people in this world who carry everything on our shoulders and do everything for everyone all the time. Everyone except for ourselves. Self-care is some thing I'm terrible at and some thing that I know a lot of other women are terrible at. And one of the things I've resolved in the last two years to get better at. But it doesn't stop me from burning out. I always take on too much. And trying to figure out how to rewire my brain in order to take on less is more of a challenge than I ever thought.Challenging my burnout is especially difficult when I see other moms and other women online doing better than me and taking on more than me and not burning out. But that's not the truth, is it? The truth is that women everywhere are burning out. It's just a fact. Why is it that women are so burnt out? It's not just because we're doing too much, it's because we're doing too much and trying to fight that burn out at the same time. We're going about this Burnout thing totally wrong. Unedited. Unvarnished. Unabashedly herself. That's Sarah Lacy to a T. After a successful career as a Journalist in Silicon Valley – largely doing in-depth, investigative work – she decided to walk away. Why? Misogyny and the bullies who fostered it. That may be something of an oversimplification but in the end, her walking away from the grind of covering the news of the tech industry led her to launch and grow a powerful network that is creating a space where people who seek to change the world can gather to learn, support each other and actually do the big work. Originally called The Chairman Mom, Sarah recently renamed her community to reflect the real WHY of the organization's purpose more accurately. Now called Chairman ME, this group (over 10,000 strong and still growing) engaged in online courses, live chats and Town Halls with the big picture intent of empowering people to find their own true voice. And there are few better to lead this charge than someone whose utterly authentic sense of self permeates everything she does. What motivates people? Why do they do what they do? What does leadership actually mean in today's world? Good questions, right? That's what Cathy Brooks, thought. And it's why she created Talk, Unleashed – a new podcast of entirely candid conversations with fascinating people doing remarkable things. This weekly podcast will feature guests from arts and entertainment to business to technology to food to activism to politics (well, we'll see on that last one). Talk Unleashed invites these influencers to consider the things that have led to them to where they are, the lessons they've learned and how all those things can come together to create a better world. #SarahLacy #ChairmanMom #ChairmanME #author #Startup #entrepreneurship #Leadership #TalkUnleashed #Unleashed Conversation #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

#168 — 40% of American households believe that it is bad for society if mothers work. That mothers should not work. This is wild. Sexism is a global phenomenon, but in America, we have a unique maternal bias against women in the workforce, and as we watch the pandemic unfold, women are losing jobs at extraordinary rates. In 2017, we had Sarah Lacy, founder of Chairman Mom, previously the founder of Pando Daily and a journalist in tech, talk about her journey from thinking sexism was not really a thing to fierce feminist. Today, we're revisiting that conversation and taking a listen to how the world of work is extremely biased against women, especially mothers, and how many ways we've made the world of work (and parenting) harder on women. We're going to dig into why the patriarchy—aka men, especially white men at the mantle of an unequal power structure—is so bad, and why it's not okay to set up a system where some people live at the expense of other people's lives and rights. That's not okay. Join me as I go back and take a listen to this powerful episode. This episode is brought to you by Nanit, the only baby monitor you need. This is episode 101 of Powderkeg: Igniting Startups, the show for entrepreneurs, leaders, and innovators building remarkable tech companies in areas outside of Silicon Valley. Today we’re revisiting an old episode where Matt spoke with Sarah Lacy. Sarah is a serial entrepreneur and a longtime journalist, founder of tech news site Pando Media, and founder of Chairman Mom, which launched in 2018. The interview is from March 2018, and we’re bringing it out of the archives because it’s one of our favorites. Let’s get to it! Let’s face it: In the tech world, motherhood is often viewed as something undesirable. Many employers and professional women think that having children will distract them from work, decrease their productivity, and make them less effective leaders. But what if the opposite is true? What if working moms actually make some of the very best entrepreneurs, investors, and employees? This is the opinion of Sarah Lacy, a Silicon Valley tech journalist turned entrepreneur. After writing and editorial stints at TechCrunch and Businessweek, Lacy launched PandoDaily, a web publication offering analysis and commentary on the Bay Area tech community, in 2012. She’s also the author of three books focusing on tech and entrepreneurship. Her most recent title, "A Uterus Is a Feature, Not a Bug," focuses on empowering professional women and proving through cold, hard data that working moms are often better at their jobs than their childless peers. Lacy flew out to the Powderkeg headquarters in Indianapolis, IN for this candid and inspiring interview. During our conversation, she shares her thoughts on the importance of good role models, evidence that working moms are some of the best people you can hire or invest in, and strategies for getting and keeping them on your team. She also shares some exciting behind-the-scenes info on her latest company, Chairman Mom, a guilt-free, judgment-free, and troll-free community for professional women and moms. In this episode with Sarah Lacy, you’ll learn: * How good role models inspire people to live up to their full potential (5:25) * Why Millennial women will be instrumental in driving workplace gender reform (16:10) * Research that proves working mothers actually outperform their peers (21:59) * Strategies for attracting working moms to your team and making them feel valued (30:05) * About Chairman Mom and its mission to support and empower women professionals (37:12**) Please enjoy this conversation with Sarah Lacy! #101 — Wait, Motherhood Makes You Better at Work? How will motherhood change me? Will I be different? Will I end up on the “mommy track” and never want to work again? These are questions that people ask themselves when they start thinking about getting pregnant and parenthood. Expectant parents and people considering having kids know that parenthood will change them, but they don’t how. Today we are going to take a look at the story that gets shoved at pregnant women (and really, at all women). The story goes that when you’re just waiting to become a mom, and once you do become a mom, you won’t be interested in working outside the home anymore. The prevailing story is that motherhood will change you, and not in a good way. The ambitions and dreams you cherished pre-kids become uninteresting to you. Because you become uninteresting. This post-motherhood story isn’t just a myth, sadly: it’s a belief that lots of people hold, and it affects how women are treated in the workplace, and it especially affects how mothers are treated in the workplace. A study from sociology researcher Shelley Correll found that mothers in the workforce are seen as less competent and less intelligent than women without children (here’s a link to the study). In fact, Correll found that “mothers in the workforce are rated as significantly less competent, less intelligent, and less committed than women without children; and a mother is 79% less likely to be hired, and half as likely to get promoted, when compared to an equally qualified woman without a child,” writes Amy Henderson, our guest on today’s episode. What people aren’t saying: motherhood makes you better at work But there’s a great twist, here, and I’m excited to talk to Amy about it. While the prevailing beliefs and perceptions around mothers are terrible—they aren’t actually based in truth. That is, while we have terrible social and cultural attitudes around mothers and work, working mothers are actually discovering how much motherhood makes you better at work, and how motherhood can strengthen your resilience, ability, and leadership skills. We previously touched on this phenomenon in our episode with Sarah Lacy, and today we get to dig in even deeper. Today I talk with Amy Henderson, CEO and Co-founder of Tendlab, all about this phenomenon and what leaders are sharing about the reality of working motherhood, and how it’s far different than the stories we scare people with. Tendlab’s mission is to help companies unlock the power and potential of parenthood in the workplace in a way that benefits every employee and maximizes productivity. IN TODAY’S EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT How parenthood has the potential to transform mothers and fathers for the better in all aspects of our lives, but particularly in our careers. It’s not just mothers, but—yes, fathers!—that receive a positive impact on career performance IF, and only IF they actually spend a significant amount of time care-taking. We are entering an era where the skills developed while parenting are not only relevant, but necessary, for success in the workplace. We also talk about what working moms should know, and wh --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/startuppregnant/message

#023 — 40% of American households believe that it is bad for society if mothers work. Because sexism is a global phenomenon, you might believe this statistic to be universal as well—but it just isn’t. In fact, this kind of maternal bias against women in the workplace is a strictly American phenomenon. Diverse cultures from deeply feminist Iceland to ‘one-child policy’ China simply do not have stay-at-home moms. Today Sarah explains how this staggering statistic manifests itself in the our culture, from the wage gap to maternity leave policy to overt sexism on the job. I ask her about the need to dismantle the patriarchy and her experience of maternal bias in the workplace. She shares her journey from ‘cool girl’ sexism denier to fierce feminist, explaining how becoming a mother allowed her to find her power as a woman and gave her the confidence to start her own business. Listen in as we discuss the way that calling out bad behavior is shifting the world of work and how to go about changing the narrative of the young, single working mother, startup founder.
