Beginning way back in 1975, the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research has been surveying high school students on their behaviors regarding drug and alcohol abuse. The survey launched when it was recognized that the 1960s had brought a widespread epidemic of illicit drug use among U.S. youth. As that epidemic has evolved, the survey has added a host of new drugs as they have become available, and it began gathering data from eighth graders in 1991, as drug use was filtering down into the population at earlier ages. In the introduction to the 2023 version of the survey results, researchers write this: “Substance abuse is the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality; it is in large part why, among seventeen high income nations, people in the U.S. have the highest probability of dying by age fifty. Parents, we need to monitor the behavior of our kids, and do all we can to educate them to the physical and spiritual dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

In this weeks episode, Kat discusses the topic of early death in the context of Family Constellation Therapy (FCT). She also shares her personal health journey and the discovery of her own gut issues in the beginning of the episode. Kat explains the spiritual element of death and recommends a book for those uncomfortable with the idea. She introduces the concept of early death in FCT and its impact on the family system. Kat emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and honoring the role of those who died early. She explores the idea of loss and grief as unexpressed love and the need to process emotions to heal. Kat also discusses the significance of order and hierarchy in the family system and the creation of black holes or potholes when someone dies early. She explains how early deaths can show up in FCT sessions and the enmeshment of different family systems due to external impacts. Kat highlights the importance of energetic boundaries and the role of FCT in healing early deaths. In this conversation, Kat shares her personal story of her uncle's early death and the trauma associated with it. She provides several ways to honor and connect with deceased loved ones, including prayer, meditation, lighting candles or incense, creating an ancestral altar, and talking to them. The benefits of healing early deaths include resolution, peace, and the ability to move forward in life. Solutions to Prevent Early Death in Bipolar Disorder with Dr. Melvin McInnis

Metabolic Mind

People with bipolar disorder are four to six times more likely to die prematurely compared to those without a psychiatric disorder. (In comparison, smokers are two to three times more likely to have a shortened lifespan.) There are several contributing factors, including things like metabolic dysfunction, as well consequences of lifestyle choices influenced by disease burden Science needs to urgently investigate these extremely poor outcomes in search of more effective interventions that will enhance quality of life for people with bipolar disorder. Emerging evidence and clinical experience indicate that ketogenic and metabolic therapies may have a central role in addressing this concerning trend. Dr. Bret Scher interviews Dr. Melvin McInnis, Professor of Bipolar Disorder and Depression at University of Michigan, on these pressing topics. Dr. McInnis is working on a pilot trial that will look at a “ketogenic mimicking diet,” augmenting a low carb diet with exogenous ketones in bipolar disorder. Could this address unwanted metabolic dysfunction in this population? We applaud Dr. McInnins and his team for asking the question. Men in Japan who lack the desire for intimacy may want to reconsider their bedroom habits, as a new study suggests that a low sex drive could increase the risk of death from all causes. Researchers at Yamagata University found that men who reported low levels of sexual interest were more likely to die from cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other health issues, even after controlling for factors such as age, BMI, and smoking. So, fellas, if you want to live longer, it may be time to get your mojo back. A UK doctor has warned against the dangerous and surprisingly common trend of masturbating with Christmas ornaments, which can cause injury and disrupt the delicate ecosystem of the vaginal microbiome. So this holiday season, it's best to stick to traditional, body-safe methods of self-pleasure and leave the ornaments on the tree. After a 10-hour breast surgery, artist Maria Koijck was shocked to find six garbage bags full of medical waste, including disposable stainless steel scissors flown all the way from Japan just to be used once and thrown away. As an artist who has focused on waste in her work, Koijck couldn't help but wonder: are we really willing to fly in fancy scissors from across the globe just to toss them in the trash after a single cut? And at what cost are we seeking healthcare? Hopefully, the answer isn't "all the garbage bags." Join the post-episode conversation over on Discord! https://discord.gg/expeUDN
