How many times in the day does your voice break the sound barrier? There are times to be quiet. After great conversations for about one-third of our trip, my son took a deep breath. Settled in the car and going along our way, my youngest says, "There are times to be quiet." Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT Little did I know he was referring to how I was continuously speaking. Speaking of the little things I noticed as I was driving over the hills and threw the woods because we were off to Grandma's house. He could not believe how I could continuously talk for no reason in his opinion. But in my opinion, it wasn't just for no reason. It was being observant and aware as to what I was seeing. So many of us are doing life with our eyes closed. The last thing I want for my child (or me for that matter), is to miss something that is right in front. Wearing blinders are good to a degree, but can suffocate the reality of what needs to be seen and heard. Our conversation continued to the point of agreement. Use your mind to think! The K.I.S.S. ~ Use your mind to think! "Think, think, think," says Pooh Bear. I must say it's interesting the way a child views life. For my son to acknowledge that I have many thoughts tickled me. At least I know he is listening. But it is a reminder that we as parents need to use our mind to think before we talk. You have a great impact on what your child hears. So make every word count. Be willing to admit if you speak out of turn or out of anger. Be open to listening to the responses to what you have spoken. Silence is golden. "Your words are treasured, so spend them wisely on little ears." ~ Kristianne Wargo Remember, there are times to be quiet. QUESTION: Where in your life with raising your child or communicating with people can you be quieter than heard? "Be present. Be incredible. Below is some wisdom from Pam and Larisa, of Settled Home. Listen in to this week's episode to get more details. Here's a sneak peek: Make your current role work for you Skills need building and tweaking Satisfy a hunger, always, no matter where you're at Absorb the good and the not good - they're both there to teach you Have conversations and share passions (others will advocate for you) Follow up and connect consistently Learn from every experience Don't take anything for granted Their Story: It was finally time to reinvent the home organizing industry. Following successful careers in merchandising and advertising, Larisa’s and Pam’s paths crossed in launching the New York City market of The Home Edit, one of the most recognized home organization brands in the world. Servicing clients nationwide, they mastered the ins-and-outs of designing spaces and developing aesthetically pleasing organizing techniques. Larisa and Pam identified a problem they wanted to solve in home organizing. Instead of providing “drop-in” and siloed organization, where a singular space was transformed yet no longstanding system was implemented, Larisa and Pam wanted to dig deeper. They wanted to really know their clients — not just their spaces — so they could create bespoke systems and lasting lifestyle transformations. Welcome to this 5th episode in a small series I’ve called: “Professional Development - Job Hunting and Your CV”.In the previous episode, I talked about how to use all the work you have to do anyway for your annual performance review to fuel your own work on your career development. You can find that episode at www.barbarakandersen.com/15.In today’s episode, I want you to take a longer view of your career. You could say that we’re going to have a look into the crystal ball! Because I want to invite you to think about what your CV will look like in 10 years. Where will you be? And what do you want your CV to look like? What do you want it to reflect about your professional life? Are you a planner? Or do you prefer to wait and see what happens?I’ve noticed three different ways of approaching career planning:There is no plan - one day simply follows the other. You show up, do your job and hope for the best. Actually – there is no plan here. You have a clear plan and vision for your career. First this kind of job, then that kind of job. Always preparing for the next stepYou have dreams, but there’s no clear plan. Apart from your education, you probably haven’t taken major action to drive yourself toward a clearly defined goal. It feels more like you have navigated the flow and the possibilities that showed up. In my experience, the last group is the biggest one. And this was also my path for many years. I always felt lucky when I got a job. Then I worked hard to do that job as well as I could. I realised what I liked and didn’t like about it. But I was very much flowing with the opportunities that showed up. I can see now that I was more reactive than proactive in my career back then. Maybe you recognize this scenario? You got the job. You learned to do the job. Learned from the job. Settled in. Got comfortable with the job. Then, slowly you got a bit tired of the job or the content of the job - or the general setting you were in. Slowly you started to think about “what else?” What could be interesting? Where could I go?So, maybe you don’t really have a plan. But the truth is that if you dare ask yourself, there are things that you’d like to see happen for yourself. Maybe you’ve had that question in a job interview: “Where do you see yourself five years from now?” Was it easy to respond to? And have you acted on it?Many of us hope that opportunities will show up. However, experience has shown me that hope is not really a strategy. I don’t believe we can decide or predict exactly what will happen five or 10 years from now. But we can envision what we’d like our professional life to look like. And we can take action to move in that direction. Is there a 4th way?So, your CV is essentially a shorthand version of your career. Is that something that is happening to you? Or are you setting the direction? Are you proactive or reactive? If you want to become more proactive, that doesn’t mean that you have to – or should - plan everything in great detail. Not at all, actually. But the first essential step is to become aware of what direction you want to go in.Read the full show notes at www.barbarakandersen.com/16.

Alphonso the Drip Grew up with a single mom, visits with dad, lots of issues there, decision not to see dadWent to grandpa on the weekends, grade 3Manitoba, living in Winnipeg, north end, not a good part of the cityMom met a guy, about 12 moved to a small town an hour south Went from the hoodlums in the city to Mennonite Southern Baptist, 15 churchesMom wasn't a religious person but I want you to have the optionBecause it was a religious town, you'd go to the youth groupsFirst real interaction with charismatic groups. Powerful, you get the tinglesHe moved the group. More of an avenue to hang out, left ideas hanging in his headEveryone was religious, it wasn't easy to speak outPropositional conversations. Didn't get to the heart of it. The frames were separate There wasn't an appreciation for the frame with his friendsJesus sacrificing himself didn't seem like a sacrifice if he went back to heavenIt was a place holderIn a household there is an animosity to religious thinkingThey felt they had to defend themselves against the position to move forwardThe groups consolidated on the defenses, Ideological handshakesWhen you're willing to step back, your kind of poking people in their axioms Found JBP, suspender video, Rogan, rabbit hole, Didn't have a concept of Inspiration for his movement forwardGot hit with depression. Depression is pervasive in the family He stopped caring, it was gone. Got put on an SSRI Shift when he took mushrooms. It wasn't the mystical experience that shifted, An opening of being able to conceptualize a positive way of looking at the world. Existence itself became enough It energized him. Strawberry Swing, Frank Ocean. You have to make sense of that powerful experience. Your ego tries to take it over. "this was mine" Settled into this idea of being content. I can move forward. And then JBP came into the frame. There's more to being. You can have more if you want it. It highjacked a lot of the processes. The concepts were deeper and fuller. Living in a fractured dream. There's splits. Abandoning The comforts of nihilism. The contentedness is a façade "I don't care" is a powerful tool to put everything aside. Pageau to RR "Where are you standing?" You're detached, but you're hyper focused on something It allows for a sort of haze. You're so focused on something so you're ignoring everything else Its actually one of the beauties of being younger is because you're sitting in so much potential you can focus on one thing and ignore everything else. But for living your day to day life it's an abuse of the fact that you can be in so much potential. The potential is going to collapse as you're moving forward. JBP: ideas have people… As you move forward you're building something and other things are collapsing. It's real suffering to care If I were to die tomorrow. My parents wouldn't care if I didn't have a house, it's the quality of love that we share with each other. Part of me wants to write off the house as an aside. It's not enough of the picture. Peterson's Cock-a-doodle-do Goal: Want an American Akida Girlfriend, wife kids, house, stable job Build a relationship with God, walk with God, I want to feel as if I'm acting in a more integrated way that best besets my life and my interactions with the transcendent Hard to bring it back in. Need to start looking at it more like that. Awe and terror, the opening and the closing Intense psychedelic experiences, the two are walking hand in hand, the awe and the terror The Body Keeps the Score EMDR How Emotions are Made: Feldmen-Barrett Frame of a classical view and tries to add more nuance to it. Directly related to the issue with words Tried to find a fingerprint for emotions Visual interpretation, The concepts bleed together, the inferences overlap Do we have an angry "circuitry" WE build the inferences from concepts. "Angry" is not a real thing, it's a concept Different cultures will have different emotions, IT's inferences all the way down It's the relevance realization, it's not the concept itself, where are these concepts coming from. There's an issue there. Pay attention to what you're doing and what concepts, your arguments are presuppositions. They're not arguing about the thing, they're arguing about the value of the presuppositions and how they play in you rlife. You have inferences all the way down. How those inferences come together. You stare into a vacuum of inferences. You see the interaction without the words. Today I spoke with the first woman to swim around the island of Bermuda, Lori King. Upon rediscovering her love of swimming later is life, Lori tried to politely decline an invitation to swim in the open water, strongly preferring the pool. Needless to say, she eventually found her rhythm and got over her fears. There's quite a bit of mom chat in this episode. About how hard it can be, but also how having kids mentally trains you to get through the tough parts of marathon swimming. Once you get to the start line, all you have to do is swim. I hope you enjoy this episode. In her own words: Lori King grew up in Norristown Pennsylvania and started swimming competitively by age 5. In college, she swam Division I for La Salle University. After college, she temporarily fell away from swimming, moved to New York City, married and had two children. She began a career as a research analyst for the Visiting Nurse Service Research Center, which eventually led her to earn a Masters of Public Health, from Columbia University (2010).As her career progressed, she felt something was missing in her life and returned to swimming in 2004. In 2006, she was introduced to open water swimming and her lifelong passion evolved. In 2010, she competed in her 1st open water event, followed rapidly, by 6 and 12-mile open water swims, in Bermuda and Key West, respectively. While trying to juggle family life and swimming, she has since competed in numerous open water marathon events, such as the Catalina channel swim, the Manhattan Island swim, the 120-mile 8 Bridges Hudson River Staged Swim, Capri-Napoli, Ibiza Marathon swim, & Kalamata Greece swim to name a few.On June 15-16, 2016, Lori became the first woman (second person) to successful swim the 36.5 miles around the island of Bermuda in just over 21 hours. In December of 2016 Lori was awarded the Global Marathon Swimmer Yudovin Award for most adventurous swim by the Marathon Swimmers Federation for her Bermuda swim. Lori has used her swimming to speak to swim teams and organizations aimed at empowering girls and was featured on “heroes on our Island” television news segment.Settled in Long Island, New York, family comes first for Lori but with their support she is able to live her dreams and reach her goals one swim at a time.Questions, comments, feedback, or if you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, email me! mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming CollectiveMusic credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

Todd is joined this week on the show by Bobcat and Kitty, owners of The Eastern Utah Tourism and History Association, the sponsor of My Side of the Universe. Bobcat and Kitty join the show to talk about their latest book: "Images of America Price". Founded by Mormons and settled by immigrants, Price, Utah, is a city of contradictions. Settled in the late 1870s, it was not until the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad discovered coal in the surrounding mountains that the town bloomed. Nearly overnight, trainloads of coal and other merchandise made Price into the commercial center of eastern Utah. As one of the safe havens for Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch, it was their outlaw gold that funded the city's continued growth. With one of the most outspoken mayors the city ever had, Price fought the State of Utah for the right to maintain its saloons, gambling halls, and bawdy houses.

Here is a little about Ingrid Thortveit. - I remember the first time I won a prize. I was about 9 years old. Primary School. We where drawing our favorite fantasy house. My drawing ended up to win the prize of the best drawing in my class, and they hung it on the wall through the rest of the years. I was super proud and it felt good. A year later we had to paint our classmates, in pairs. I painted my best friend at that time. I remember the teacher was very pleased with my painting, as I managed to make the nose look three dimensional. It ended up hanging at the Headmaster's office the rest of my time at primary school. I realized how much I loved painting portraits. - High school I did not study art, it was something I did a bit on my free time. It studied maths, chemistry, physics and biology. My plan was to study maths at college. I got in but I had this feeling that this was not right. I didn't feel passionate about it. I loved doing art. Completely change of direction as I one day woke up and decided to pursue art instead. I moved to Paris in 2006, and got inspired. Buildings and portraits. Got super inspired in by all the portrait painters in Montmartre, the artist area of town. - In 2007, I loved to London to work like a nanny. On my free time I did portrait commissions. Lots of families saw these portraits and I did a few commissions of kids. I loved it. My passion for portraits where growing. - Up until now all I did was self-thought. But I wanted to learn how to paint professionally. In 2011 I enrolled to The Florence Academy of Art, Swedish branch, in Gothenburg. One of Europe's best academies for fine classical art. The traditional techniques and secrets of the old masters. I lived in Gothenburg for 3 years. I won a scholarship and lots of prizes for best paintings throughout the years I was there. - In 2014 I won a prize, Fourth year prize. I got another year for free at The Florence Academy of Art in Florence. Also with specialized studies with the founder and Director of the school, Daniel Graves. I was teaching there too. Such an inspiring year. - In 2015 I moved back to Norway where I had my very first exhibition. Did very well. Stayed in my home town for half a year, with atelier in nature. In 2016 I moved to London again, where I worked full-time with art. - Settled in Oslo in 2017 where I now do art fulltime. Lots of exhibitions, commissions and workshops all over Norway, in Provence and also in London. Would love to get to Usa as well at some point. I keep on climbing to reach out more places with my art. What does Ingrid Thortveit find yummy? I don't have lots of time to cook, but if I do, I love salmon(of course, Im Norwegian ;-)). I'll say that if I went to to an island where I had to survive with two foods the rest of my life, I'd bring salmon and avocado. The avocado is also inspiring to paint, it has a beautiful color and shape if cut. Or any fish with Omega 3(tuna, Marcella etc.) I feel omega 3 is important for my art brain. I will go to a workshop to make Thai food the beginning of March, I love Thai food. If i cook I would put weird things together. As a student at FAA I was called the ""bird girl"", as I managed to make strange meals out of seeds. I eat oat porridge for breakfast every morning. . Here is how to connect with Ingrid Thortveit. www.ingridthortveit.com Through my website: www.ingridthortveit.com, or e-mail: ingridthortveit@yahoo.no I would love to exhibit all over the world, USA in particular. Also I do all sorts of commissions, portrait commissions in particular. From life or from photo..

Settled by Lucien Maxwell within a 1.7 million acre land grant, this town was established just of the Cimarron cutoff of the Santa Fe trail. Soon the town sprang up and in came the outlaws. You know how sometimes things don't go as planned and then somewhere out of thin air it feels like it was meant to be? Funny how that works in our favor! Rewind to a couple weeks ago when a random snow storm moved into Colorado and delayed my 6am flight out of the Denver International Airport. With so many travelers stuck at the airport, getting home 'soon' didn't look too promising. Turns out Wes and Trent (fellow Oregon natives) from the Born and Raised Outdoors crew were also stuck in DIA on their way to hunt Wisconsin turkeys. So, great minds find some open space among the crowed and podcast. Settled somewhere amongst displaced passengers, a few random birds in the terminal, and smudge prints on the glass overlooking the runway, we caught up on life, hunting, upcoming projects, and making the most out of ALL we are given. Tune in and enjoy this episode. You can find more from the BRO crew on their kickass YouTube channel, Born and Raised Outdoors.
