Navigating Pharma's New Frontiers: Breakthroughs and Challenges

Good morning from Pharma Daily: the podcast that brings you the most important developments in the pharmaceutical and biotech world. Today, we're exploring a series of significant developments that underscore the rapid evolution within these industries.Starting with one of the major players, Merck, which has been strategically adjusting its focus in light of Keytruda's looming loss of exclusivity. The company has demonstrated remarkable progress with Welireg in kidney cancer trials, successfully pairing it with Keytruda. This combination therapy is a beacon of hope for Merck as it faces the challenges of patent expiration, highlighting the growing trend toward leveraging combination treatments to enhance efficacy in cancer therapies. This approach not only pushes the boundaries of cancer treatment but also paves the way for future therapeutic innovations. In contrast, Merck and Eisai have decided to cease their pursuit of a Keytruda-Lenvima pairing for a specific liver cancer subtype after failing to achieve overall survival benefits, despite earlier progress-free survival gains. Such developments highlight the inherent uncertainties in oncology drug development, where initial promising results may not always lead to long-term survival advantages.Meanwhile, Eli Lilly is making headlines with its substantial $1.2 billion investment to upgrade its Puerto Rico manufacturing facility. This move is aligned with their strategy to amplify production capabilities for oral drugs, particularly focusing on their promising GLP-1 pill, Orforglipron. The investment signifies a robust commitment to addressing diabetes and potentially other metabolic disorders through an expanded and more efficient production pipeline. Additionally, Eli Lilly's collaboration with NVIDIA aims at constructing an unprecedented supercomputer tailored for pharmaceutical research. This initiative leverages advanced computational power to accelerate drug discovery processes and enhance data analysis capabilities—a testament to how AI and machine learning are streamlining research workflows for developing more effective therapeutics. On the regulatory stage, Akebia Therapeutics has opted to cancel a trial for its anemia drug Vafseo after discussions with the FDA. This decision sheds light on the intricate challenges companies encounter while navigating regulatory landscapes and optimizing clinical trial strategies to ensure market success. In legal news, Kenvue is preparing for a lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton regarding alleged deceptive marketing practices about Tylenol's safety during pregnancy and its purported link to autism risk. This case emphasizes the necessity for pharmaceutical companies to uphold rigorous scientific evidence supporting their marketing claims while navigating potential legal challenges.Strategically, WuXi AppTec's decision to divest its China-based clinical research units marks a broader industry trend of streamlining operations to concentrate on core competencies. By focusing resources on its Contract Research Development and Manufacturing Organization (CRDMO) platform, WuXi aims to leverage growth opportunities in this burgeoning sector. In a notable technological partnership, Johnson & Johnson's medical technology division and Verily have entered agreements with NVIDIA, highlighting the increasing intersection of artificial intelligence with life sciences. These collaborations are poised to advance AI applications within healthcare, potentially transforming areas such as data analysis, diagnostics, and personalized medicine. The industry is also feeling the impact of governmental actions, as evidenced by a federal government shutdown starting October 1st that has led to indefinite blocks on federal worker firings. Such political developments can significantly affect healthcare funding and policymaking processes. These stories collectively paint a piSupport the show

It's Wednesday, October 29th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Indian authorities arrest 3 Christians for outreach to Hindus Last week, authorities in northern India arrested three Christians, including a pastor, for conducting an evangelistic outreach to Hindus. The arrests were made in the state of Uttar Pradesh under its anti-conversion law. This comes just days after India's top court criticized the state's use of the law to target Christians.  Such anti-conversions laws are used throughout India to persecute Christians. Believers face the harshest treatment in Uttar Pradesh.  India is ranked 11th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of the most difficult countries to be a Christian.  Trump oversaw Cambodia-Thailand Peace Deal U.S. President Donald Trump is visiting countries in Asia this week. On Sunday, he oversaw the signing of a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand. He also signed trade deals with both countries as well as Malaysia.  Listen to comments from President Trump on that Cambodia-Thailand peace deal.  TRUMP: “Today's signing represents just one of eight conflicts that we've ended in eight months of the Trump presidency. I'm very honored to have done it. We saved millions of lives. “I'm here in a mission of friendship and goodwill and to deepen our ties and commerce, to strengthen our common security, and to really promote strongly, stability, prosperity and peace for all of the countries in this room and long beyond this room.” Yesterday, President Trump visited Japan, signing a trade deal with their newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The president also plans on meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea today.  Samaritan's Purse airlifted 100,000 pounds of food/supplies to Gaza Samaritan's Purse airlifted over 100,000 pounds of food and relief supplies for families in Gaza on Saturday.  This marks the 13th flight to the Middle East by the international Christian relief organization. The latest airlift includes 290,000 food packets, 12,000 blankets, and 12,000 solar lights.  Listen to comments from Franklin Graham, president and CEO of Samaritan's Purse.  GRAHAM: “This has been a terrible war that's taken place, but Samaritan's Purse is going and we're going to go in Jesus' name. We've been helping the people in Israel. We've been helping the people in Gaza, and we're going to continue to help.” Hebrews 13:16 says, “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Yelp spanked for vilifying pro-life pregnancy centers In the United States, a federal appeals court ruled against Yelp, Inc. in a pro-life case. Yelp operates a platform that connects people with local businesses. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing the company for placing misleading information on listings for pro-life pregnancy centers.  In a press release, Paxton said, “Yelp tried to play politics and steer users away from pro-life resources, but being based in the criminal-loving state of California will not shield them from accountability. I will continue to defend pro-life organizations that serve Texans and make sure that women and families are receiving accurate information about our state's resources.” Pew Research: 59% of Americans like influence of religion on society Pew Research reports a sharp rise in the share of U.S. adults who say religion is gaining influence in American life over the last year. The study also shows that more Americans express a positive view of religion's role in society.  The survey found 59% of U.S. adults say religion has a good influence on American life, up from 49% in 2022. Twenty percent have a negative view of religion's influence, down from 26% in 2022. And 21% have a neutral or unclear view of religion's influence, down from 25% in 2022. Fifty-eight percent of Americans also believe their religious views are at odds with mainstream culture, up from 42% in 2020. YouVersion Bible app celebrates one billion downloads And finally, the Bible app, YouVersion, is celebrating one billion downloads.  The Bible app began in 2008 as one of the first 200 mobile phone apps. It saw over 80,000 downloads in the first week. Now, YouVersion is available in thousands of languages and has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times around the world.  YouVersion is celebrating the power of the Bible next month with a 30-day Bible reading challenge. Bobby Gruenewald, the founder and CEO of YouVersion, stated, “We're seeing incredible global momentum around Bible engagement . . . Every day we hear stories of lives being changed—someone overcoming addiction, marriages being restored, and people encountering Scripture in their own language for the first time. This milestone is really a celebration of the Bible itself.” In Isaiah 45:22-23, God said, “Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the Earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By Myself, I have sworn; from My mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.'” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, October 29th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com). A truck full of deadly virus-infected "aggressive" lab monkeys were released in a crash in Mississippi. It's about time, right? In fact, doesn't it feel a little late in this disaster of a timeline for that kind of event? Anymore, a thing like that feels like some sort of shitshow oasis. David Waldman has already shown some signs of infection this morning, but Greg Dworkin remains hale, and hearty enough to dredge another a raft o'stories from the dismal fen of Ex-Twitter. Fewer people like Donald K. Trump. More like him less. Tariffs that were to hurt the other guy, foreign and domestic, have been discovered to hurt them as well. Generic Democrats come to the rescue of the American economy. Gops have ways of dealing with those nasty polls, and one way is to simply cease to be and allow the scum to float to the top. Judges are now the last line of defense. A federal judge has decided that Bilal Essayli can't be U.S. attorney for the Central District of California just because the Senate has never selected anyone for the job. Another federal judge demands that violent recidivist Greg Bovino wear a camera and report to her each day. The Ninth Circuit en banc bench continues to block Trump's Portland invasion. The House is trying to fund SNAP because having the National Guard put down food riots might image badly heading into the midterms. South Korea takes satire further than South Park would ever dare, handing Trump a gold crown and a bottle of ketchup. Satire can never catch an administration that keeps male veterans from getting coverage for breast cancer,,, What, hasn't Pete Hegseth banned nipples in the armed forces yet? Meanwhile, Ken Paxton sues Tylenol until he can figure out how to jail mothers of autistic children. In local news… maybe not local to you, but local to somebody, Jay Jones' texting scandal hardly hurts him, let alone Abigail Spanberger. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, on the other hand, hopes the Zohran Mamdanimentum always rolls her way. Andrew Cuomo not only hopes people will remember him next week, but he also hopes they can find him on the ticket.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 23: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Here we go again. Trump is talking about his own mortality or career mortality or heaven or all of the above… AGAIN at the same time he’s talking about declaring insurrections and jailing more political opponents, like Mayor Johnson and Governor Pritzker and any one of a dozen judges including at least one he appointed – not prosecuting them, just jailing them - and, as if it could GET any worse, he specifically segued from the issue of wanting to prove to God that he’s been good to how great all those weapons are at his naval base. The missiles are flying, hallelujah, hallelujah. Plus he's written: “Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect Ice Officers! Governor Pritzker also." Look, you and I know it should be TRUMP in jail because he’s not only broken laws, he’s nearly COLLECTED THE COMPLETE SET of broken laws. But the process of convincing Trump that he's not crazy, that his predictions are coming true, that Portland is ablaze, is how Stephen Miller and the others manipulate him into eroding American democracy a little more every damn day. And this has worked since at least 2016 and I was told about it by Ed Rollins in 2017. It's the Trump personal feedback loop. And when the interruptors in that loop get in the way, they get bought out and destroyed. CNN first, The Washington Post, and now CBS News and the "B" stands for "Bari Weiss" who once told The Federalist Society that it was ok if it didn't believe her and her wife's marriage was legal because they all shared what really mattered: a desire for lower taxes. Let me expand upon the death of CBS News and her disastrous debut at its helm by retelling the story of the miniature version enacted at the CBS flagship station in LA when I worked there in 1991: The Mystery Of The Broken Number 3 CBS Pencils. B-Block (37:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: What is wrong with these dweeb MAGAs? Ken Paxton can't keep his pants on, every other day there's some new story causing his wife to again decide to divorce him, and he's just announced "undercover operations" against leftists. Hey, Pal, if you did anything BESIDES undercover operations you wouldn't be dismissed as a sex pest. Poor Derrick Van Orden continues his descent: now he's yelling at people for not learning how the Senate votes the way he learned about it in the 4th Grade (all of what he learned was wrong). And the Bad Bunny Super Bowl blowback reaches Marjorie Taylor Greene who demands a law making English the official language which is going to be trouble for her since she doesn't speak it. C-Block (45:00) THURSDAYS WITH THURBER: It's one of those weeks, plus my back is gone, one of my eyes is fighting me: it's time to bring back the first Thurber story I ever read aloud to an audience, the oddly soothing "A Box To Hide In."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Robert Roberson is set to be executed by the state of Texas on October 16, 2025.   But he is innocent.  He has spent 20 years on death row, having been convicted of killing his 2 year old daughter Nikki. Robert's wrongful conviction was based on the now universally debunked theory of “shaken baby syndrome”.  But autism plays a significant role in this tragedy as well, because the powers that be misinterpreted Robert's "odd" behavior, as evidence of his guilt.       Robert's case has garnered BIPARTISAN support in the TEXAS legislature.  Even the lead detective in the case now unequivocally concludes Robert is innocent.  Lastly, a cadre of independent experts have presented unassailable evidence that Nikki's death was not a homicide. But despite all of this, the Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, and the governor, Greg Abbot, refuse to stop this injustice. Now, it is up to us.  Please listen to this episode, which includes two experts from the case, and then ACT. You can: 1) Call Gov. Americans don't talk about state attorney generals very much. Technically it's “attorneys general”—like “sisters-in-law” instead of “sister-in-laws”—but don't get hung up on the wording. It's what AGs actually do that matters so much.A state attorney general is basically the top legal expert in their state; they're also known as The People's Lawyers because they fight for us, their constituents, against bad actors who don't have our best interests in mind. That can mean prosecuting companies that are polluting waterways or landlords who are illegally raising rent prices or banks that are selling people's private data. Sometimes state AGs band together on lawsuits, like a recent case against Purdue Pharma for aggressively pushing medications like OxyContin and contributing to the opioid crisis we're facing in this country.Unfortunately, we also have a lot of examples of the harm that a corrupt or extremist attorney general can do. (Ken Paxton, for example) But the good news is, we the people have the power to elect them. In all but seven states (AK, HI, NH, NJ, WY, TN, & ME), voters choose their AG at the ballot box. SEASON 4 EPISODE 13: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN Fraud News Channel morning anchor Brian Kilmeade "apologizes" FOUR DAYS LATER for saying America’s 771,000 homeless (that'd include 33,000 Homeless Veterans and 140,000 Homeless Kids should be killed. By “involuntary lethal injection. Or something. Just kill them.” His co-host Lawrence Jones agreed with him. Fox did nothing about it. They planned to get away with it, and would have, but for Media Matters saving the original clip from last Wednesday and Aaron Rupar re-posting it Saturday morning. I had seen the clip and thought it was fake. It's that bad. And finally Sunday Kilmeade issued a wallet-felt apology. We are in such a place in this country – thanks to Trump, thanks to MAGA, thanks to the late Charlie Kirk, thanks to the Tea Party, thanks to Bush, thanks to… the list continues backwards almost indefinitely and infinitely – that this horrific vision, which in its essence is mass murder of the homeless (the most widely accepted high-end estimate of homelessness in this country is 771-thousand) – and no Kilmeade didn’t say let’s submit 771-thousand people to quote “involuntary lethal injection” – he didn’t have to. Is 771 people somehow less horrific? 77? What’s your threshold to be enraged at the prospect of simply pulling SOME homeless people off the street and lethally injecting them? Seven? One? We know what you are Kilmeade. We are just arguing about the price...to be spent on lethal injections. Fire him now. SHOCK: TRUMP HELPS PUTIN AGAIN as he escalates his attempt to rebuild the Soviet Union. Now it's test drones at the Poland border (again) and the Romanian border (new). Waiting to see if Trump blinked. He blinked so much he could've been sending Morse Code. St. CHARLIE OF KIRK: So, as Andrew Lawrence of Media Matters summarized it: Kirk "was a champion of free speech and if you disagree youre under arrest” The Trojan Horse phony bi-partisan governor of Utah is now down to insisting the family says the shooter had been indoctrinated with left wing ideology. What kind of left wing ideology? That he said he was "not a fan" of Kirk. Funny, the most venomous, most threatening criticism of Kirk in the last 60 days was Nick Fuentes saying Kirk could no longer call himself a Christian and his college events should be interrupted and he should be shouted down, and Laura Loomer insist Kirk "stabs Trump in the back." Hmmm. If harsh words killed Charlie Kirk, is that leftist ideology Fuentes and Loomer were spouting, or right wing guilt? B-Block (37:04) MORE ON CHARLIE KIRK: There are bigger issues in play. It is clear now that there were two different public Charlie Kirks. On the left we saw a slick but rather run-of-the-mill hate monger who mocked Democratic victims of political violence and wanted to see public executions. On the right, they literally never saw those videos. They only saw a "beautiful man, armed only with a bible" preaching family values. How? Different social media feeds. The other big issue with the right's collective mania and desire to punish the left for Kirk's death when it still looks like the far right did as much or more? All of those right wing influencers just assumed God was on their side and was protecting them like he "protected" Trump last year. Oops. C-Block (1:00:20) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: This is the longest all-new episode ever but always time for worsts. Ezra Klein last week? "Charlie Kirk Practiced Politics The Right Way." So, Ezra Klein next week? "Brian Kilmeade Practiced Television The Right Way?" Ken Paxton is screwing around again? Does he have a wandering eye oh right. And when MSNBC fired Matt Dowd for, you know, telling the truth about the death of Kirk, where were Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, and Lawrence O'Donnell, risking a dollar or two to defend accurate commentary? I mean they whiffed so badly that they made the anchor who was on with Dowd look perfect by contrast: Katy Tur.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

President Donald Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska this week to discuss a potential end to the war in Ukraine (which Russia started.) To call the meeting ‘high stakes' would be an understatement — already critics are warning of the potential for a ‘1938 Munich Moment,' when Britain and France allowed Nazi Germany to take control over a swath then-Czechoslovakia in a bid to preserve peace on the continent. But the parallels to WWII don't end there. Earlier this month, Trump said nuclear submarines were ‘in the region' ahead of special envoy Steve Witkoff's meeting with Putin in Moscow. As we mark 80 years this month since the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, historian Garrett Graff, author of the new book ‘The Devil Reached Toward the Sky,' joins us to talk about what we learned — and we didn't learn — in the decades since the U.S. dropped those bombs. And in headlines: Thousands of people in Israel demonstrated against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to take control of Gaza City, Trump ramped up threats to take federal control of Washington D.C., and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued to remove 13 Democratic state lawmakers from office amid an ongoing fight over redistricting.Show Notes:Check out Garrett's new book –https://tinyurl.com/y28cfex3Call Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
