Rest to Return is a podcast for a restless world. Kohenet Keshira haLev Fife is your host. This series is rooted in Shabbat, an ancient Jewish practice that teaches us how to belong to time. Here, rest is a sacred rhythm woven into who we are. We continue by gathering around a single question: Who do we become when we rest? Lecha Dodi is the song that ends Kabbalat Shabbat (the service that helps us transition into Shabbat) before we move into the Ma'ariv prayer service.  The idea that Creator finished creation on the seventh day comes from Genesis 2:2. Tranquility, satisfaction, calm, and quiet being created on the seventh day comes from Genesis Rabbah 10:9. The idea of creating change that's “slow, deep, and irreversible” comes from artist and activist Ricardo Levins Morales. I learned the mussar practice of clarifying our ratzon by asking “what do I want? What do I really want?” from Rabbi David Jaffe of Kirva. You can learn more in Chapter 1 of his book, Changing the World from the Inside Out: A Jewish Approach to Personal and Social Change. This quote has been misattributed to Courtney Carver. It is instead referenced by Carver in her book, Gentle: Rest More, Stress Less and Live the Life You Actually You Want. Theodore Gordon is a musicologist and musician whose work connects experimental music, critical organology, and science and technology studies. He has performed with viola and Buchla instruments at venues including Elastic Arts, Experimental Sound Studio, and Roulette. Gordon is Assistant Professor of Music at Baruch College, and serves on the Doctoral Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center. His first book, The Composer's Black Box: Making Music in Cybernetic America, published in December 2025, shows how scientific concepts and technologies borrowed from cybernetics, information theory, and systems-thinking became catalysts for new musical organizations in the 1960s. The opposition to Pluto, the Expander meeting the Transformer, activates the unfinished Uranus-Pluto Virgo revolution from the mid 1960's around power, identity, and who gets to flourish. Where does the desire to be fully seen meet the power structures that have historically demanded containment?On the same day Jupiter trines Neptune in Aries, activating the Uranus-Neptune Capricorn cycle from the early 1990's, the dissolution of old structures of authority and meaning. Flow rather than rupture. The invitation to imagine what might replace what is dissolving. Hold both transits together. The confrontation with power and the opening of new vision are the same threshold approached from two directions.Tuesday, July 21: Jupiter in Leo sextiles Uranus in Gemini. Jupiter completes its rapid weaving through all three long cycles. This sextile activates the Neptune-Pluto Gemini cycle from the late 1890's, the revolution in mind, communication, and shared reality. New ideas finding unexpected audiences. Connections forming between people and communities that would not ordinarily find each other. In two days Jupiter has touched all three great cycles, bringing each into the realm of collective story and shared meaning.Wednesday, July 22: Sun enters Leo. Leo season begins in a field already charged by everything building around it. The Sun in Leo asks what is genuinely alive in you that wants to be expressed — not performed, not managed, but genuinely offered from the place that knows its own worth. In a collective moment asking so much endurance, Leo season is not a distraction. It is a necessary counterweight.Thursday, July 23: Sun in Leo squares Chiron in Taurus. Mercury stations direct at 16 degrees Cancer. The desire to shine meets the wound of unworthiness in its most embodied form. Where does the body carry the memory of having been seen and found lacking? Let what is tender be visible to yourself at least. That is enough for today.At the same time Mercury stations direct, completing three weeks of retrograde review in the realm of feeling and belonging. What the interior work of these weeks revealed, the emotional truth that found language, the unfinished conversation revisited, is now ready to move forward. Trust what you know now. There are no traffic signals in lunar orbit. And for the most part, they’re not needed – at least not yet. Only about a dozen spacecraft are circling the Moon. But every once in a while, they can pass dangerously close to each other. And that triggers a “red alert” – a warning to the operators of both craft. It might sound surprising that there’s ever any kind of problem – there’s a lot of space around the Moon. But many of the spacecraft follow similar orbits. Many of them orbit from pole to pole, allowing them to study the entire lunar surface. And there’s no system for tracking the second-by-second locations of the orbiters. Instead, NASA engineers with a project called MADCAP track the “orbital elements” of every craft in orbit around the Moon and Mars – a set of details that includes altitude, the angle of the orbit, and much more. Computers constantly plot the motions of every craft for which they have those details. If it looks like there might be a dangerously close encounter, the alert goes out. Operators of the conflicting missions then get together to find a solution. Overall, the number of alerts is small. But in December 2024 it jumped to more than 20. And with more lunar missions scheduled, we can expect more “red alerts” in the years ahead. The crescent Moon is in the west as darkness falls. Darren walks through the claims stacked behind the idea — the Moon ringing like a bell for more than an hour after the Apollo 12 crew crashed their lunar module into it on November 20th, 1969, craters of wildly different widths that all share the same shallow depth, moon rocks dated older than the Earth itself, and the near-perfect circular orbit that lets the Moon exactly cover the Sun during an eclipse.From there the episode turns to Villisca, Iowa, and the night of June 9th, 1912, when someone entered the home of Josiah and Sarah Moore and killed all six members of the family along with two young house guests, Lena and Ina Stillinger, striking each victim with an axe as they slept. Darren lays out the crime scene that neighbor Mary Peckham and Josiah's brother Ross discovered the next morning — cloth draped over the mirrors, two cigarette butts in the attic, a slab of bacon left beside the Stillinger girls, and a bloody basin in the kitchen — and the suspects who never brought closure, from traveling minister Reverend George Kelly, who spoke of eight dead bodies before the news broke and later gave a confession the court dismissed, to Josiah's embittered business rival Frank Jones. More than a century on, the boarded-up house survives as a museum where investigators report a heaviness on the stairs, drifting fog, and the sound of dripping blood after the 2 a.m. train whistle.Next the show travels to Colma, California, the suburb built for the dead, where roughly 1,600 living residents share the ground with more than 1.5 million graves across 17 cemeteries. Darren traces how San Francisco banned burials in 1900 and evicted its dead, triggering the largest grave relocation in history after the 1906 earthquake, with more than 150,000 bodies hauled south and tens of thousands reburied in mass graves when families wouldn't pay the ten-dollar transfer fee. He points out the famous names resting there — Wyatt Earp, Levi Strauss, William Randolph Hearst, Joe DiMaggio, brain-injury case Phineas Gage, and self-declared Emperor of the United States Joshua Norton — alongside the darker footnotes of looted skeletons, discarded headstones repurposed as gutters and seawalls, and the town's own gallows-humor slogan, "it's great to be alive in Colma."The episode then examines whether extraterrestrials appear in the Bible, centering on the vision of the prophet Ezekiel by the river Chebar and the four winged creatures with human hands, calf-shaped feet, and four faces that rose out of a fiery whirlwind. Darren details how former NASA chief engineer Joseph F. Alan Skorski recently interviewed ordained Minister and Heritage Foundation Visiting Fellow, Luke Moon, who returned to Heritage following the Tucker Carlson fiasco last year, in which President Kevin Roberts initially refused to distance the think tank from Tucker Cralson, following his interview with Holocaust denier, racist groyper, Nick Fuentes. During the interview, Moon said that he had several conversations with Carlson, who sought his counsel on how to shed the “antisemitism” label. After advising Carlson on the necessary steps needed to redeem himself, “Tucker doubled down on his antisemitism,” according to Moon. Luke returned to Heritage as a Visiting fellow to combat antisemitism, from both the right and left. Moon spent last decade focusing his attention on raising awareness about persecuted Christians in the Middle East and encouraging Christian support for Israel and the Jewish people. During the interview, Moon spoke about the Marxist/Islamist alliance. While taking about Wisconsin Gubernatorial candidate and other DSA candidates, the frequent refrain is, " "None of us are free until Palestine is free." Moon asks, "Why is it important for the DSA activists and candidates to declare this idea? It is because the liberation of Palestine means the end of Israel. And Israel is a stand-in for God. To destroy Israel is to destroy God which would bring about liberation from God's commands and expectations." Israel is the living testimony that the God of the Bible makes promises and keeps them. You cannot look at a reconstituted Jewish state in the ancient homeland — after two thousand years of exile — and call it a coincidence. It is a provocation to every worldview that denies a sovereign God who acts in history. Karl Marx was once asked who he hated the most in Britain and his answer was a British preacher named Charles Spurgeon. Spurgeon was a revivalist preacher who was leading thousands of working-class people to faith and taking away Marx's army. Marx hated him for it. Similarly, the Islamists demand total submission to Allah. The God revealed in scripture, particularly through Israel and the Church, is a rival truth claim that must be suppressed. When Islamists come to power, the churches and synagogues are destroyed. The ones that aren't destroyed are turned into museums or government-controlled PR outlets. Back in 2014, when I started advocating for Christians in the Middle East, there were over 450,000 Christians in Iraq. Twelve years later, there are less than 185,000. “Baby's Guide to the Night Sky” introduces the youngest kids — down to newborns — to constellations and the wonders of the Cosmos. It comes from two people who've spent their lives chasing that same wonder in very different ways. This week, we are joined by authors Sian Proctor and John Read. Sian Proctor is a geoscientist, artist, poet, and commercial space astronaut who served as pilot of Inspiration4 in 2021, becoming the first Black woman to serve as a mission pilot in space. John Read is an astronomer and science communicator who left a career in corporate finance after a single look through a telescope changed his life. He now hosts the YouTube channel LearnToStargaze and has authored several astronomy books, including “A Kid's Guide to the Night Sky.” We'll talk about how the two of them met, how they turned a lifetime of expertise into something a baby can enjoy, and why it's never too early to start looking up.
