They also discuss the role of privilege in the health-care system, and the importance of having an advocate throughout the treatment process. Gwen and Duncan share their experience moving the family across the country to receive better care, and what life has been like since then. They give advice on some of the institutional problems within medicine and how we can best “heal” the medical system as a whole.    Show Notes: For more information on how to participate in The Big Climb click here.   For more information on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and how you can help click here.   As always, this podcast was created by Integrative Touch for Kids (ITK). RESOURCESMari Park, Rocking This Baby (rockingthisbaby@gmail.com)"When Minneapolis Segregated" (article on redlining and racial housing covenants)SHOW NOTES“For most people, I or my siblings-our family-were the first blacks that they’ve ever actually befriended or come in contact with, or had a relationship with. So there were a lot of questions. There may be a lot of ignorance because of the perception that society puts out there. The narrative that is out there about blacks can make our peers even feel uncomfortable.” -Jeanette“That was very challenging for us to constantly be on display, or being asked to speak for the entire race...People are individuals. I can say what I think, but I am not in any position to speak for an entire race. There was a lot of weight on our shoulders being the only blacks in our circles.” -Jeanette“How do we help our children understand the value of all races, all colors of skin, and see the unique image of God in people? Because I think it can be easy to think, ‘I’m not racist. I value all people, all cultures.’ But when our context is pretty monotone in color, we just aren’t even aware sometimes of what we don’t know. And we can find ourselves feeling uncomfortable by things that are different than what we are familiar with.” -Christy“As mothers we need to start having crucial conversations with our children, and that can start right at the dinner table when families are together, bringing up these conversations so that as they grow it doesn’t become uncomfortable...Let’s start showing them the beauty of all cultures.” -Jeanette“You’re only gonna grow and build from learning these cultures, so I think we need as mothers to just kind of embrace them so that they (our kids) don’t fear what they don’t understand.” -Jeanette“It creates a world for us to live in where it requires such intentionality on our parts to not live out of a different narrative, but to choose kindness, to choose love, to choose patience, to be willing to hear the whole story; to be slow to speak, quick to love.” -Christy“When they’re (kids) that age, that’s when you’re starting to shape who you want to be...but if you don’t see people who look like you in those professions, then your dreams get shut even more because you don’t believe that you can get there. Part of believing is seeing...If you can see those role models, it’s that much more encouraging to see yourself get there.” -Jeanette“Our children are our future and I think that our children will model what they see. So we as parents have a responsibility to show our relationship, our partnership, our stance against those things that are derogatory and negative.” -Jeanette“It shows the importance of identity, knowing who you are, to be able to love others.” -Kaylin

UpNorth Kingdom: Living in a world that is not our home.

Let's talk about the Law Christians should actually be following.Show Notes“For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law.”-1 Corinthians 9:19-21Should we be keeping the Sabbath?–We are called to keep the Sabbath–Sabbath was a typeshadow event for Jesus. (Just like sacrificing was a typeshadow)–God rested on the 7th day–God commands Israel to rest–Jesus comes and declares He is LORD of the Sabbath–We are free from work as we can rest in the finished work on the cross.Matthew 12:88 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” Matthew 11:28-3028 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”Under the law1 Corinthians 9–Throughout the chapter Paul speaks of doing everything he can to avoid creating stumbling blocks to the Gospel of Salvation for those he is trying to reach.–When Paul says he is free from ALL but yet made himself a servant to all to win them over. –To the Jews he became as a Jew to win them over. This doesn’t mean he did anything to violate his Christian principles or the Gospel. For those under the law he became AS ONE under the law but makes it clear he IS NOT actually under the law. –Acts 16:1-3 ( example with Paul taking Timothy with him for circumcision)–Paul went on to Derbe and Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman, but his father was a Greek. 2 The brothers and sisters at Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him. 3 Paul wanted Timothy to go with him; so he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, since they all knew that his father was a Greek. –Outside of the law referred to the Gentiles but Paul also makes it clear he is under the law of Christ which YES concerns the new convenant. Paul isn't advocating for the neglection of adhering to righteousness, or the moral law.Law of Christ (what is it?)–It is essentially the instruction and command Jesus delivered to believers pertaining to how we should live our lives in light of our new life.Galatians 6:2–2 Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.Mark 12:29-3129 Jesus answered, “The most important is Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.” – The entire 10 commandments fall into these 2 categories, loving God and loving your neighbor.–The moral LAW, or 10 commandments brought death (as 2 Cor 3:7 states); however we now live according to the Spirit by faith which brings eternal life. –The 10 commandments now point us to our need for Jesus, who can pay the penalty for our sins whereas in the past the 10 commandments exposed us and pointed us towards death by way of condemnation. Israel realized this and that was the point of the sacrifices ie atoning for sins. Moral Law–The first law given to man was the moral law. This law is a representation of God’s character and nature. God is good, holy, perfect and righteous. God gives the moral law to Adam.–Adam rebels and disobeys God, breaking the moral law.–See God cursing Cain after He slew his brother.–God expects the moral law to be followed; see the flood with Noah.–See God toss out Satan and the angels for breaking the moral law.–Moses enters the scene and God essentially delivers this same Law but in the form of the 10 commandments. It’s the moral law that covers ethics in how to be in obedience to God, love God and each other.–Later we get the ceremonial laws and judicial laws. These laws were imposed to help Israel follow the moral laws so God could keep Israel on the path to bringing about the Messiah; delivering on the promise made to Abraham.–Jesus comes and fulfills the laws that nobody could keep. These laws were the moral laws; which is why God required a sin offering; a sacrifice. –Jesus atones for us all, past, present and future.Galatians 3:24-26“So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.”–The moral law, however still exists. We’re just now longer condemned by it as believers. We are now justified by grace!Supporting verses for living righteous (following the moral law)1 Corinthians 6:9-11“Don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or males who have sex with males, 10no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit God’s kingdom. 11And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.Romans 6:1-4What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4Romans 6:6-76 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, 7 since a person who has died is freed from sin.Romans 6:15-1615 What then? Should we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Absolutely not! 16 Don’t you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey — either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness? The only law we’re to “attempt” to keep is the moral law. Realizing that we can’t keep it fully else that would nulllify the need for Jesus. This law is categorized as Love God and Love your neighbor which is what the 10 commandments reveal. This is the Law that Jesus emphasizes.Email truth@upnorthkingdom.com | Follow on Twitter | Subscribe on YouTube | Follow on Instagram See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Show Notes: For the month of March, we're going to tackle the question of how to become a financial consultant. So many of you have reached out for advice, so I'm going to provide you with the exact steps you need to take to begin a career as a financial consultant by showing you "how to find a mentor." Step 1: Find a Model You need to find someone that you want to be like. This means you will likely need to read and research to find out what type of financial professional you want to be. Recall last week that we talked about the 2 paths. You need to find someone to emulate whether that be in an article, on social, at a conference, etc. After you find someone and what exactly about them attract you, you need to... Step 2: Approach them Now don't go right into the approach. Do your research. Follow them on social if they are active and find out what they like. Find a common touchpoint of they produce content and how you might have a convo with them. Then reach out to them through DM or email with a direct ask. Don't be generic with "what is the # 1 piece of advice you have". I've talked about how to structure your ask in this video. NOTE: If this doesn't work, pause and try again in 2 weeks. Don't spam them. You should be trying to connect with more than one person anyway. Step 3: Follow their advice If you end up having a meeting and they agree to mentor you make sure you follow their advice. There is nothing worse than getting to this point and then wasting time. Of course, if they have a recommendation you disagree with that is something else, but make sure you do what they say. Now here's a really simple method to find a person... Find your local FPA chapter and buy a ticket to the next luncheon Before you arrive, spruce up your LinkedIn profile using this video's tips. While you are there, sit at a table with total strangers and get everyone's business cards. Feel free to do this with as many people as you like. Send a LinkedIn DM after the event that says something like..... If they respond, use the direct ask for mentorship. This a sure-fire way to find a mentor and if it doesn't work after 3 tries, do it until it does. Show Notes: For the month of March, we're going to tackle the question of how to become a financial consultant. So many of you have reached out for advice, so I'm going to provide you with the exact steps you need to take to begin a career as a financial consultant. The Current Landscape There are so many hats financial professionals can wear and because of this many paths have been decided. At last count, there were 300,000+ "financial advisor" titles within the industry but I'm going to simplify this for you. When it comes to working with individuals and their money in any capacity you can either be a financial advisor or a financial coach. The Traditional Route The financial advisor may also be known as a wealth manager, a registered rep, a financial planner. However, rather than the title being the main distinction, the key is whether they provide investment advice. Because for that you need to be licensed per the Securities Act of 1940. Providing and charging for financial advice will necessitate that you have at least a Series 65 license. This is offered through FINRA. After you take this exam you can either work for a broker/dealer firm as an investment advisor representative (IAR) or you could create your own entity and start building a practice. However, it is more common to enter into some type of training program that allows you to gain the experience to sell financial products and services. You may see many financial advisors at this point supplement their knowledge by obtaining a designation or getting an advanced degree (there are several) that can enhance your knowledge of products, and the overall process in wealth management and financial planning. So if you go this route you will be viewed as taking the traditional route. The Non-Traditional Route Within the last several years there has been a movement of financial professionals that offer budgeting, credit repair, debt consolidation and other services that consumers of financial services demand. These are also financial professionals. There is no current regulatory standard governing their interaction with the public. A financial coach can provide a great bit of assistance to someone not quite ready to work with a financial advisor. They may need help with building a budget and organizing their bills, etc. Financial coaches can provide the type of guidance that these individuals need in order to get in control of their finances. And 5-6-7-8… Michael’s Top 5 Iconic Dances Good Mornin’ – Singin’ in the Rain Gym Dance – West Side Story One – A Chorus Line All That Jazz – Chicago The Club - In The Heights Paul’s Top 5 Iconic Dances Cell Block Tango – Chicago Singin’ in the Rain – Singin’ in the Rain Step in Time – Mary Poppins Prologue – West Side Story We’re in the Money – 42nd Street Honourable Mentions - Michael Opening Audition Scene – 42nd Street Jellicle Ball – Cats All of Kinky Boots Hand Jive – Grease Honourable Mentions – Paul One – A Chorus Line Anything Goes – Anything Goes I Got Rhythm – Crazy for You Hey Big Spender – Sweet Charity FANTASTIX BITS IN THE INTERVIEW The music in this one is a CRACKER! Worth a listen for that alone Other than a musical theatre upbringing what else do Paul and Michael have in common? More about Whimsical Productions It’s been 12 years between drinks for Michael in his current role, how is it different this time? It took a specific criteria for Michael to help narrow this top 5 down! We love his well thought out countdown. Paul struggled too……..lots of honourable mentions in this episode Does recent modern dance have that same ICONIC flavour of the old musicals F O S S E – say no more! Could you say, that all the opening and closing numbers have the BEST dance numbers? Who else loves the fly on the wall look at musical theatre that Chicago gives you? Will anyone say KICK LINE in this episode? West Side Story spoiler alert…. someone dies! Gasp! Any dance performed in stiletto boots has got to rate a mention! Which dance still rates in pop culture today? Paul sneaks in a 5b Is it even a musical without DANCE? Will the dance numbers from shows like Hamilton or Kinky Boots eventually rate on a Top 5 list at some stage in the future or will the old favourites stand the test of time when it comes to iconic dance numbers? Which past podcast episode guest would Michael like to sing a duet with? This episode was a true challenge….which iconic dance scene would have made YOUR top 5? Today’s episode will warm your heart, spark motivation, and have you asking yourself, "what more can I do?" SHOW NOTES: For every headband sold, Headbands of Hope donates one to a child with cancer. Since launching in 2012, they’ve donated over a half-million headbands to every children’s hospital in America and 15 countries! Front row seat to watching ambition: Jess’s mother + father inspired her in business + life. Make the ask: Jess’s grandfather reminds her it’s okay to throw out the plan and ask for what you want.  Entrepreneur at heart: Jess got her start in business by selling American Girl Dolls on eBay. "We can’t always control what happens but we can control the meaning we give to it + how we respond." The Bernie Madoff investment scandal personally affected Jess + her family, yet it taught her incredible lessons. "Optimism is not about staying in your happy place. Sometimes it’s about sitting in the dark, absorbing it, and then fully coming to an understanding of what you can do about it." Inspiration from frustration. Hard times give us a choice. They can be an excuse to do less or the reason to do more. “Failure will always feel better than regret” “I’m not living a life. I’m building a legacy.” "Every expert was once a beginner." What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Just because you hear crickets doesn’t mean no one is listening. Keep putting your truth out there, keep going after what you believe in, and eventually, people will find you. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. She is the author of the supernatural crime novels Vigil (2016), Corpselight (2017) and Restoration(2018) (from Jo Fletcher Books), as well as eight short story collections, including The Girl with No Hands and Other Tales, Sourdough and Other Stories, The Bitterwood Bible and Other Recountings, and A Feast of Sorrows: Stories. Vigil was nominated for the Dublin Literary Award in 2018. She has recently signed a two-book deal with Titan Books for Blackwater and Morwood, gothic fantasies set in the world of the Sourdough and Bitterwood collections − both of which involve witches. Lots of witches. She is the author of the novellas, Of Sorrow and Such (Tor.com) and Ripper (in Horrorology: The Lexicon of Fear) − again, more witches. She has won a World Fantasy Award, a British Fantasy Award, a Ditmar, an Australian Shadows Award and six Aurealis Awards. And has a lifelong interest in, you guessed it, witches. It seemed like it would be a pretty safe bet that Kate wouldn't have heard of this week's book. A little 1977 beauty it is. Betsy and Kate haven't done a Pinkwater book before, and this is a heckuva way to begin. It's a glorious celebration of disappointing the homeowner's associations of the world. It also apparently has to do with Nickelodeon, how to keep a pet alligator, and magical mystery lemonade. Show Notes: For further information about that weird moment when a standardized test took one of Pinkwater's stories and asked kids to explain it, check out this New York Times article on the subject: https://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/21/nyregion/standardized-testing-is-blamed-for-question-about-a-sleeveless-pineapple.html Woohoo! This episode is where I transform a personal crisis into something of value. The Mandarin character for ‘crisis’ has two meanings ‘danger’ and ‘opportunity.’ This crisis is in fact an opportunity for me to share stories from my life, let you witness some of the hurt and shame, and how I moved forward. Learning to be vulnerable is one of the greatest skills I’ve ever acquired, and has lead me to success. Maya Angelou describes success as ‘liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.’   Show Notes: For my blogs, retreats, teacher trainings and Yoga teacher mentoring, visit my website.
