For many new and aspiring traders, the chance to work in a proprietary trading firm, is the holy grail of trading. It is trading's equivalent of making it to Broadway or being recruited by a major sports team or franchise. In this episode we talk to the co-founder and head of one of the world's leading Proprietary Trading Firms, Mike Bellafiore.  Mike is co-founder of SMB Capital based in New York City. In this episode Mike talks about the realities of working in a Proprietary Trading firm, and how the focus on learning, development and mentoring is such a vital ingredient which drives both the growth of the traders and the success of the firm.  Mike shares with us how SMB puts a heavy emphasis on learning and continual improvement, and in supporting their traders to become the elite. What you will hear in this interview is how SMB's focus on, and a culture of, continual improvement and striving for excellence, is the fuel behind their success and is what helps so many traders at SMB capital to not just achieve their dreams, but to exceed them. There is an additional aspect of this interview, which has relevance beyond trading, and which applies to businesses of all types, not just trading businesses. SMB Capital has made itself a ‘Learning organisation'. Its whole core being is built around learning, not just for the people, but for itself. It makes a deliberate effort to learn what it does well, what it didn't do so well, and what it can do better. An example of this can be heard in a part of this interview where Mike talks about how originally they had a plan to award traders who made a ‘million dollars' a year with one coloured t-shirt, then set another level where they would reward traders who made two million dollars in a year with a different coloured t-shirt. Initially they thought that would be an amazing achievement and never really banked on a need for more levels beyond that. But they have now had to have a new t-shirt for traders who exceed ten million dollars in a year. – As they say, nice problems to have. I feel much of this philosophy stems from Mike himself. You can see aspects of this in his two excellent trading books, which I highly recommend, One Good Trade: Inside the Highly Competitive World of Proprietary Trading and the The Playbook: An Inside Look at How to Think Like a Professional Trader. You can also see it in Mikes social media posts, always offering great advice, and praising employees for great achievements. You can follow Mike on Twitter @MikeBellafiore, he is a great follow.

In this new episode, as in the previous one, Merritt shares a depth of wisdom, honesty and humility which is rare. He allies that with an ability to encapsulate the key challenges traders face in their battles they face with both themselves and the markets. In this episode Merritt talks about the benefits of working in a proprietary trading business. He tells how working in a proprietary trading firm supports traders by fostering their trading development and providing them mentorship and guidance and a collaborative experience as they progress in their trading careers. Merritt also talks about Apteros's NADRO Methodology, which is a trading system, method and approach built on principals that teach the trader the language of the markets, helps provide direction for how they engage with the market, and supports their development of their trading playbook. This interview is in reality more of a conversation and broadens out to cover a whole range of themes around the behaviours, mindsets and attitudes traders need to embrace to power their development and growth   This episode is full of nuggets of wisdom, too numerous to mention and summarise. One thing is for certain though, the listener will learn so much from this episode that will both educate them and challenge them on some of their deep-held beliefs. You can learn more about Merritt and his work by visiting Apteros’s webpage: https://www.apterostrading.com/Merritt can be followed on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/merrittblack

This is a podcast about Technical Analysis and its practitioners. I think we've done a good job of bringing in some of the top technicians in the business, and in some cases, some of the best that ever did it. My goal when I first started this was to talk to people who bring different perspectives on the subject and on the markets in general. We've had Portfolio Managers, Analysts, Traders, Authors and Psychologists come on regularly over the past few years. Today I am thrilled to invite Riley Rosenberger to the podcast to get his point of view on Technical Analysis and what it feels like to start a career as a trader. Riley interned for us last year after spending some time training with SMB Capital in New York City. “Riley The Intern”, as he's known in some circles, brings a unique perspective that we haven't heard on this podcast before. When he first decided that he wanted to learn about trading, his High School teacher in Colorado told him to think about doing something else. She said he didn't have the pedigree for that. I love that he ignored her and I love even more that every time I see him, he has a new book in his hand. He's always learning and constantly goes out of his way to get ahead. I appreciate that and I really think you'll enjoy this conversation. I certainly did! Click here to return to the episode page

"The traders who are uncoachable are the ones who refuse to seek a coach out to begin with." - Dr. Brett Steenbarger (https://traderfeed.blogspot.com/) This one is for our guys. Our junior and senior traders. Our team leaders and trainers. The ones who walk into the office every morning with the determination to make money but with an even greater desire to continue learning, adapting and growing with this market. Mike said it best - you need to love what you do but more importantly, you have to want to get better and better at it every single day. It's a performance sport. You are, in so many ways, an athlete. You have to work hard, show up and strive to be the best. "Even successful traders need to keep learning and we need to give them that space to grow. Whether you're making one million dollars or three million dollars a year, it shouldn't stop there." - Mike Bellafiore, co-founder of SMB Capital (http://smbcap.com/) In this episode of Short Stops, our Director of Marketing & Operations, Eleanore Lee-Teo, flies out to New York City after being granted an exclusive interview with clinical psychologist & performance coach, Dr. Brett Steenbarger, as well as the Mike Bellafiore, co-founder of SMB Capital, one of the leading proprietary trading desks in the city. The best traders are never satisfied. They want to get better and better everyday." - Develop a Playbook - Find your Best Setups - Statistics Don't Lie - Why reviewing and recording the trades that you make is essential - Adaptability and Consistency. Adaptability and Consistency. We cannot stress this enough. - The Stages of Trader Development (Learning, Consistency, Sizing, Expanding your Playbook and Sophistication) There is so much more wisdom to be gained. Mike Melissinos began his research into investing philosophy while working as a junior analyst at Bear Stearns and J.P. Morgan. Both the collapse of Bear and the Financial Crisis, in general, were eye-opening experiences and motivated him to launch his own investment firm – namely, to offer a better way to protect capital while still being able to capitalize on major trends. He graduated from Seton Hall University (2006) with a degree in Accounting. In 2007, Michael worked as a hedge fund auditor for Rothstein Kass; from 2007-2009, he worked as an analyst for Bear Stearns and J.P. Morgan; and from 2009-2010, as an equities trader for SMB Capital. In January 2011, four partners contributed a total of $300,000 to help Michael launch his investment management career. Today, he manages over $5 million for individuals and institutions. Check out all the links, books and resources mentioned in this episode over at www.economicrockstar.com/mikemelissinos. Returning for this episode, is Mike Bellafiore—the co-founder of New York City prop trading firm, SMB Capital. Mike is also the author of One Good Trade and The Playbook, and he was the featured guest on episode 022. As the title suggests, the purpose of our conversation is to breakdown how you can formulate a plan for becoming a 7-figure day trader. Mike is well-qualified to speak on this subject, because he’s mentored and lead traders within his own firm to reach this level of trading success. There are no quick fixes packed into this episode, but there is real value—if you listen carefully, take notes and intentionally act on some of Mike’s suggestions, I know it will make a difference over time. -- Don’t miss the upcoming LIVE podcast event in Sydney, with special guest John “RAMBO” Moulton. So, what did we talk about? Andy's ability to take pain on adverse positions, whether or not this has been a key ingredient to his trading success, and do traders with higher risk tolerances make more money. Andy also shares his daily habits and critiques a trade which didn't go so well from the session prior to recording this episode. And naturally, we cover a few other things too... -- Sponsored by TradeStation.com: Very few online brokers offer the services, tools and technology (all-in-one!) – for active traders – like TradeStation do.

Today’s guest is a trader that has been requested quite a few times actually, I’ve had a lot of requests to have this person as a guest on the show, and the guest is Adam Grimes. Adam has two decades of experience in the industry as a trader, analyst and system developer and is currently Chief Investment Officer of Waverly Advisors. He’s previously held positions at Level Partners, MBF Asset Management and SMB Capital and is the author of ‘The Art & Science of Technical Analysis: Market Structure, Price Action & Trading Strategies’. For those of you that know Adam and his work, his approach to trading is a mix of quant and discretion, and I think even if you’re a purely systematic or quant based trader it’s interesting to hear other people’s approaches and points of view. So we start off the chat by discussing his approach of mixing quant and discretionary models, and then we move onto behavioral factors in the market and why approaches that look at the market as purely rational fail. We then end the chat discussing Keltner channels and their applications to trading, so there’s quite a variation in topics here but I’m sure you’ll find it interesting. Topics discussed Mixing discretionary decisions with a quantitative framework Why behavioral factors in the markets are so important and why approaches that look at the market as purely rational fail The application of Keltner Channels in trading

Desire To Trade Podcast | Forex Trading Tips & Interviews with Highly Successful Traders

Trade With Edge w/ Mike Bellafiore Episode 34 of the Desire To Trade Podcast features Mike Bellafiore, the co-founder of SMB Capital, a well-known proprietary trading firm based in New York, USA. Mike is also the author of One Good Trade: Inside the Highly Competitive World of Proprietary Trading and The PlayBook: An Inside Look at How to Think Like a Professional Trader. SMB Capital’s trader-training program was highlighted in the TV documentary Wall Street Warriors. His firm has appeared regularly on CNBC’s Fast Money, CNNMoney, Bloomberg, and Fox Business. I first heard of Mike Bellafiore and SMB Capital through Mike's first book called One Good Trade. It describes how things are done in a proprietary trading firm and provides real stories of traders who had or hadn't what it took to thrive in this world of trading. I highly recommend the book! Mike has a lot of experience working with traders and came to understand what made them successful. He also knows what the learning process looks like for a trader. During this interview, we discussed the traits traders must develop in order to succeed. At one point, I asked Mike what advice he had for struggling traders. He pointed out something very insightful. In his opinion, traders can't start and be successful right away. Struggling is simply part of the progress. There is a process traders must follow if they want to see results. It takes time but Mike Bellafiore, without any doubts, know what it's like. What’s covered in the podcast? How Mike Bellafiore started to trade How the learning phase is broken down A great piece of advice for struggling traders The culture at SMB Capital Andrew's #1 lesson for any trader What keeps Mike motivated each day And so much more...

Mike is the co-founder of SMB Capital, a proprietary trading firm in New York City, as well as SMB University which is the arm for trader education. He’s also the author of two very popular trading books ‘One Good Trade’ and ‘The Playbook’. Additionally, Mike is a regular contributor to Yahoo Finance, and often appears on CNBC’s Fast Money, CNN Money, Bloomberg, and Fox Business. But even with all of this going on Mike is still a very active, very successful trader. During our interview, Mike delivers some great insight about traders often confusing psychology for a lack of edge, and an overview for one of his favorite setups which has been labeled ‘The Money Trade’. Plus, he shares the development program new traders go through when joining SMB Capital, and a few top-level pointers on how to achieve a sustainable trading style. And I just want to point out this interview was recorded on the 20th of May, only reason I say this is because Mike mentions a few market events during this interview.
