We're talking about Leonarda Cianciulli - The Soapmaker of Correggio (Italy). She's not a simple DIY pro - we're dealing with a full blown serial killer! This week we're dealing with crafts and kills, mother/son relationships, and the last soap store we'd ever shop at. In this exciting “behind-the-scenes” episode, Danielle Bombash, co-owner of Bombash and Earley, gives us a tour of her store and production space. She and her husband, Tim, run the business out of a charming storefront that resembles a cottage-style home in McMurray, PA. Their impressive and extensive lineup of botanical skin care products is made entirely by hand in small batches from this location. After viewing their retail displays in the front of the store, I got to see their main production room in the back of the house, which is typically off-limits to customers. Danielle described how their products are made from raw ingredients, and she showed me some of the equipment that's used in the creation process. We had a terrific discussion about the origin of the business, how she and Tim balance their unique approaches to entrepreneurship, and why family is a central part of what they are building. If you have any questions or if you'd like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Soap has been the mainstay of personal care for millennia, but in recent years, it has gone from household commodity to luxury cosmetic in homes and hotels. Soapmaking is thriving too as an artisan hobby and has launched many entrepreneurial beauty businesses. Formula Botanica graduate Sandra Velasquez started her successful Latinx heritage bath and body brand Nopalera in 2020, helping elevate soap to new heights. But, let's just stop for a moment. Do we ever ask ourselves about the history of soap? It is worth doing so as there is a whole era of soapmaking that has been almost erased from the records of social history. In this episode, Formula Botanica CEO and podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier discovers the murky past of soapmaking with guest Dr Candace Parrish, whose studies in public relations, health communication, and visual communication led her to unearth a shameful period of American history and its enslaved soapmakers. Candace went on to create her soap and candle brand Odelia, Marie & Patrice to honour the legacy of African-American soapmakers, and as a platform to support activism for Black and people of colour in America today.

Samantha Story-Camp's purchase of a homemade soap recipe book was supposed to be a creative way for her to provide gifts to fellow theatre actors after the final night of performances. One evening, she found herself at a local small business association workshop on how to start a business. Her and a friend were interested in creating a singing telegram company with a unique spin. Their idea never got off the ground, but what she learned planted the seed for another entrepreneurial venture. After receiving initial feedback from her friends and online community, Samantha decided to launch Pip & Lola's.Samantha eventually moved back to Pittsburgh, the city where she received her theatre degree from Point Park University. She and her husband opened a storefront, and Pip & Lola's began to grow. The company, which is named after two of her children, is a thriving family business with two locations. They also have a generous donation program in which they provide bars of soap to regional domestic violence shelters and other local charities. In this episode, Samantha talks about what she's learned from over a decade in business and how her theatre background helps her to relate and communicate with her many loyal customers. If you have any questions or if you'd like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. In this episode of Architecture, Design & Photography we sit down with Linda Meyers, Co-Founder of Wary Meyers, a soap and candle company based in southern Maine. Husband-and-wife team Wary Meyers started out in Brooklyn designing interiors for their friends and artsy-types. After a magazine column for Time Out New York and a book, they relocated to Maine, decorated their own Portland apartment which would grace many magazines and countless blogs, and still created interiors and installations back in the city. Feeling the desire to make a tangible product, they've taken their design sensibilities and infused them into enticingly scented candles and soaps, which they hand-make in their Cumberland home- working in an attached former beauty salon built for the previous lady-of-the-house in the 1980's. Both the candles and soaps are informed with the Meyers' playful wit and panache, one candle fragrant with cannabis and suntan oil, and their boldly striped soaps, loosely inspired by Italian design icon Ettore Sottsass's "Superboxes" in fact look more like a design object than anything else. When Jeff Lovett and his wife moved from New York City to southeastern Ohio, they got back in touch with small-town living. It was the early 2000s, and the DIY movement was in full swing. The Lovetts experimented with things like home brewing and soapmaking, among many other endeavors. Whenever they shared their soaps and lotions with people, they received overwhelmingly positive feedback. People loved the fact that the products actually worked, and that they were comprised of simple, clean ingredients that they could trust. The Lovetts realized they were onto something, and even though they had no prior business experience, they decided to take a leap and launch Lovett Sundries. While living in Appalachia, Jeff had been studying the history of company stores. This inspired the branding, product naming, and labeling for their concept. Sustainability was also a driving factor for them, so the Lovetts sourced materials that were recyclable and reusable for their packaging. In this episode, Jeff talks about some of the funnier moments when they were finding their way in the very beginning. Ultimately, it was a trade show back in New York City that helped them to refine their product offerings and build some important relationships in the industry. Today, the Lovetts make all of their products in their studio located in the Wilkinsburg neighborhood, and they also operate a small retail space in the front of the building. If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Born under tragic circumstances and raised in an abusive household, Leonarda Cianculli's early life seemed to have led her down a rough path. But poverty, a bad marriage, and the death of her children - along with a fortune teller's predictions from long ago - prompted her to lean into her superstitions and belief in magic. At the start of World War II, Leonarda found a way to protect her sons from serving and being killed in combat - she needed to take others' lives in their place. But were her superstitions her true drive for murder, or was it simply greed?

In spring 2018 I visited the headquarters of the Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap Company in Vista, California, where the Bronner family carries on the legacy of 5 generations of traditional soapmaking and the quirky and passionate All-One vision of Emmanuel Bronner (Dr. Bronner). You are probably familiar with their colorful liquid soap bottles covered with words exuberantly enumerating what Dr. Bronner called the Moral ABC's. The Bronner Family still uses their castillian soap product as a platform for world healing. I met with David Bronner, Emmanuel's grandson, intending to discuss the new Regenerative Organic Certification that they are championing along with Patagonia, The Rodale Institute, and quite a few other companies who are seeking to help create a more harmonious agricultural system. David also invited Mickey Norris and Chris Conrad to join our factory tour and conversation. David described Chris and Mickey as "the godfather and godmother of cannabis" because of their 30 plus years of pioneering advocacy work towards legalizing cannabis. We ended up discussing much more than just regenerative agriculture, but it all fluently flowed together in the All-One story. Legalization of psychedelics and cannabis, regenerative grazing and dietary choices, bison, beaver, David's relationship with his granddad, the history of soapmaking...you can't really draw the line between these threads, for it's All One or None! Exceptions Eternally? Absolute None! All One! All One! ---- You can visit Dr. Bronner's website at . Here's the official website for Regenerative Organic Certification: . The silly, swaggery instrumental music used in the intro and outro this episode is instrumental clips from a recording of my song Meter Maid Betty from a few years ago at Dave Clark's (Banjo Dave's) house. Such a pleasure to play with the amazing Ross Plunkett on trumpet and the sweet, sultry sounds of Angelica Pray singing along here and there. Katie was on the flute, but I forgot her last name. Good times. I hope to play with you folks again. Here's that full recording: And again, I want to thank Peia, the angelic Songkeeper who has allowed me to use her song for my Muse Ecology introduction. She writes beautiful Earth songs that soothe the soul and inspire courage, and she carries songs from old cultures around the world, from times when the village was intact and humans were more connected with the greater ecology around them. She has been mostly focusing recently on the music of her own Gaelic ancestry. I highly recommend her music and also performances and workshops if you can make it. You can see what she's up to at
