Today is going to be a great episode. I recently met today's guest at the end of last year through a mutual connection. We had the opportunity to hop on a zoom call and get to know each other and learn more about what we were up to in business. We both quickly realized that we knew a lot of the same people, and had both done some pretty incredible things in the digital marketing agency space. Finding people like today's guest in the marketing space is hard to come by; because so many people are faking it; he is not. Supplier diversity programs have gotten a lot of attention in recent years, but the values and vision that underpin them is hardly new. Some dedicated advocates have been working since the 1960s to create opportunities and develop capabilities at the same time. Our guest in this episode is one of those advocates. In this episode of The Sourcing Hero podcast, Host Kelly Barner welcomes James Lowry. James is an Advisor at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and his past work experience includes time at McKinsey, Toyota, the Peace Corps and an ongoing academic advisory role at the Kellogg School of Management. In this interview, James talks about why investing in the growth of minority-owned businesses is so critical and how we can make that growth possible: The role CEOs and executive boards play in making their supplier diversity programs successful - starting with knowing the CPO's name Why growth - not participation - must be the success metric for minority-owned supplier programs Equity as the best way for minority-owned businesses to access funding and grow without losing their ownership identity Links: James Lowry on LinkedIn

The altercation occurred after a dispute, initiated by text messages, led to a physical confrontation at the Lost Lakes subdivision. Coledye Warnock, the brother of one of the arrested men, is accused of fatally shooting Robelin during the altercation. According to witness statements, the fight ensued between multiple individuals, leading to Robelin being shot. Warnock and others fled the scene, with Warnock later arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and other offenses. The other six men face charges of fighting and disorderly conduct, with one also charged with obstructing law enforcement. Robelin was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigations are ongoing. STORY 2: Former Facebook and Nike Diversity Manager Gets 5 Years for Fraud Barbara Furlow-Smiles, a former diversity program manager at Facebook and Nike, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for orchestrating a complex wire fraud scheme aimed at stealing over $5 million. Furlow-Smiles exploited her position at Facebook to manipulate invoices and payments, directing fraudulent proceeds to herself and associates. She continued the scheme at Nike after being fired from Facebook, using similar tactics to siphon funds. Furlow-Smiles recruited various individuals, including friends and family, to participate in the scheme. She used the stolen funds to finance a lavish lifestyle across multiple states. Furlow-Smiles was sentenced to prison and ordered to pay restitution to Facebook and Nike. STORY 3: Candidates Sound Off on Wildman's Civil War Store Wildman's, a longstanding store in downtown Kennesaw known for controversial merchandise, has sparked debate among candidates in the upcoming city council election. The store, featuring Confederate and Nazi memorabilia, has divided opinions, with some calling for its removal and others emphasizing free speech rights. Councilwoman Madelyn Orochena campaigned on removing the store, while candidates Ben Day and Beatrice Shakal expressed moral opposition. However, some candidates prioritize other city issues, such as development and public safety. While acknowledging concerns about Wildman's, candidates emphasize the importance of upholding First Amendment rights and engaging in constructive dialogue rather than bullying tactics. The controversy surrounding Wildman's underscores broader discussions about community values and inclusivity in Kennesaw. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. They argued that taxpayer money should be spent on projects, not events, and raised concerns about accountability issues within the organization. While Richardson defended the gala as a celebration of sustainability efforts, Birrell and Gambrill called for greater transparency in event funding and suggested hosting county events in more cost-effective venues. Chairwoman Cupid noted the lack of available county facilities for events like her State of the County address, which prompted the discussion on event spending. The commission plans to revisit the issue at their next meeting. STORY 5: Drayton Leads Fundraising in Cobb Superior Court Clerk Race In the race for Cobb Superior Court clerk, Democratic challenger Brunessa Drayton has outpaced incumbent Connie Taylor in fundraising, raising nearly $14,000 in the latest reporting period and totaling $31,605 overall, compared to Taylor's $16,900. Drayton's support spans nationally, with notable contributions from Georgia figures like Rep. Terry Cummings and Austell Police Chief Scott Hamilton. Taylor received donations from figures like former Gov. Roy Barnes' law firm and former Cobb NAACP President Deane Bonner. Carole Melton, a bailiff, raised $4,700 this period, with support from various legal professionals. Nick Simpson raised $7,530, mostly spent, while Deborah Dance, the sole Republican candidate, hasn't reported significant fundraising. The primary is on May 21. We'll be back in a moment   Break: INGLES 10 STORY 6: Cobb Chamber Names Yalo Small Business of the Year Yalo, a minority-owned creative agency, was named the 2024 Small Business of the Year by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Known for branding and advertising, Yalo saw impressive growth, making the Inc. 5000 list with 151% revenue growth. They added 12 new clients in 2023, reaching $10.6 million in revenue. The award recognizes Yalo's unique approach and results. They will compete at the state level. The chamber also honored other businesses, including CDH Partners in the Small Business Hall of Fame, Perfect Image as Minority-Owned Business of the Year, FruTea Bubbles Café as Woman-Owned Business of the Year, 1885 Grill and the Alley Stage for Community Service Excellence, Wasserman Talent Solutions as Business to Watch, and AquaGuard for Next Level of Excellence. STORY 7: Civil Rights Complaint Filed Against Cobb Schools The Cobb County School District faces a complaint filed with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights alleging "discriminatory censorship" in its book-banning practices. The complaint, filed by the National Women's Law Center, asserts that Cobb, along with a Florida district, targeted books by and about racial and LGBTQ+ minorities. Cobb removed 25 books from libraries since August, with several featuring LGBTQ+ or racial minority characters or authors. The complaint claims this violates Title IX and Title VI, creating a hostile environment for marginalized students. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale denied targeting specific groups, citing sexually explicit content as the reason for removals. The Cobb Board of Education plans to review the complaint. This follows a previous civil rights complaint regarding "shared ancestry." Break:   Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Oktane was founded by Toni Covington (former bodybuilder) and ISupreme Watkins (Marine Corps veteran). We are black-owned and family operated business based in MD. We came up with the idea to produce an energy drink that is not only great for the everyday on-the go athlete, but the everyday working person as well. We wanted to develop a drink that is 0 calories, 0 sugars, and fuel efficient without the gitters or fillers. Oktane Energy Drink is made with clinically proven ingredients that accelerate your metabolism and provides great source of energy.  This carbonated drink of choice has the perfect balance of flavor and energy that serves as an amazing boost for active or busy lifestyles. The problem we encountered in the industry is that many energy drinks lack proper nutrients, loaded with sugars and contains toxic fillers. How we are solving the problem, we are committed to sourcing the purest ingredients that also encourage the health and wellness of consumers that they reach. we are uniquely qualified to pull this off because we have interacted in the fitness/wellness industry for over 10 years, which makes us highly qualified to develop this brand with great conviction. If there's one piece of advice Irene Nakamura wants you to take to heart, it's this: Your success begins when you expand beyond others' expectations for you. Irene Nakamura is the Founder and Principal of iDepo Reporters and iDepo Hawaii LLC, a woman and minority-owned court reporting firm providing both in-person and remote depositions, e-filing, subpoena and process serving, and record retrieval services to attorneys, law firms, legal secretaries and paralegals.  iDepo operates two independent companies in Los Angeles and Honolulu, Hawaii, with a network of 100+ culturally-diverse court reporters and staff, nationwide. In addition to a high degree of professionalism, iDepo is known for providing an excellent workplace environment. With nearly 30 years of court reporting experience, Irene is also a Registered Professional Reporter, a Realtime Reporter, and a certified LiveNote Reporter with certifications in California, Hawaii, Washington, Nevada, and Illinois. Prior to founding iDepo, Irene served as an Official Court Reporter for the Honorable Robert M. Takasugi and the Honorable George H. King at the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Since 1991, Irene has reported on complex cases for national and international law firms including high – profile cases involving the Mexican and Armenian Mafia and several groundbreaking business cases. She has also reported corporate meetings for the Screen Actors Guild, among others. By founding her own court reporting agency, Irene has become the first Japanese - American woman to do so in Southern California, perhaps in the nation. As hard as it may be for anyone to start a business, Irene says it is especially difficult coming from her background.  A brand born out of determination Looking at Irene's success, it's easy to assume that she was encouraged every step of the way. But while addressing cultural nuances, Irene shares that for her, this wasn't exactly the case.  Irene Nakamura's mother raised her to be a good wife and mom - but the emphasis was not necessarily on education. Beyond high school, Irene was informed that she had to wait to enroll in college until her brother graduated university. Irene was not having it.  After all, her brother was pursuing a double Master's degree - and Irene was not about to wait to start her life until his graduation date. Instead, she worked full-time to put herself through trade school as a court stenographer. She didn't even understand what it was, but she took to it naturally. Despite the challenges of becoming certified - stenographers have to pass their licensure exam with aa solid A+ and at least a 95% accuracy rate - Irene thrived and quickly became beloved to her clients for her follow-through, attention to detail and dedication. Relationships build better companies Irene Nakamura did not set out to become an entrepreneur.  She was frequently requested by name and became a staple of the court reporting community, and nourished her relationships with others in her field. But the inspiration for starting her own business came out of a troubling moment in her career.  Irene was requested on a case and communicated that she had surgery that week, so she wouldn't be able to turn in her transcripts until the following week. Nevertheless, the client insisted on working with her. Despite her communication, she woke up from surgery to harassing messages from people waiting for her transcripts - and realized that it was time to make a change. Her own family, watching her work while recovering and on a holiday, suggested that she start her own company. Upon launching iDepo, many of Irene's former clients chose to work with the company long-term. Relationships are everything to Irene, and nurturing her client partnerships paid off in a big way when she started her own brand! Creating opportunities for others Irene was beloved by her clients, but she observed that the working conditions for court reporters could be improved. Starting her own company meant that she could have a profound influence on the trade - and change lives along the way.  Now with three locations and growing, Irene says that her biggest goal is growing an excellent team. iDepo works on a national level, providing services in courts across the United States. The company is in a time of rapid expansion. WIth more graduates looking for stable employment in a trade that impacts lives, court stenography is a fantastic and marketable skill to learn - and iDepo is a company born out of excellence.   Quotes “When I was young, I was conditioned to follow the path my mom had led for me. She was grooming me to become a good wife and mother, and that was my path.” “It was all born out of relationships. I was getting so much work, there was no way I could do it by myself. I needed to start hiring.” “One of the biggest challenges is the people you work with. Hiring and making sure you have a really good team you can count on. They need to have a really good attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit, I like that even as part of a team. I want them to work well together. Sometimes your coworker might need help! I do my best to cultivate that type of environment.” “At first I really struggled to put myself out there. I had built my business on relationships but I got to a point where I needed to expand beyond those relationships. I had to have a website, marketing, social media, and being on amazing podcasts like yours to bring brand awareness…” “We have to pass our national test at 95% accuracy, at 225 words per minute with two people speaking. There aren't many exams given for a career that you have to have an A in order to pass, not just an A but an A+. One technicality can make or break a case.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the website for iDepo at https://ideporeporters.com/company-idepo-team/  Connect with Irene Nakamura on LinedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/irene-nakamura/   Check out Irene's feature in Medium Magazine's “Power Women” series: https://medium.com/authority-magazine/power-women-irene-nakamura-idepo-reporters-on-how-to-successfully-navigate-work-love-and-life-as-209de062481  Read Irene's shout-out in Shoutout LA's piece Guardian of the Record: https://shoutoutla.com/meet-irene-nakamura-guardian-of-the-record-founder-of-idepo-reporters-and-idepo-hawaii/

The depth and breadth of Afdhel's knowledge on this subject makes listening to every minute of this podcast worthy of your time.   Some of the themes we discussed included: The secret to becoming a loved business/employer/brand Afdhel highlights some of the work that Conspiracy of Love is doing with brands around the world We discuss the growth of the Purpose movement globally and what has caused it; Afdhel shares some insights he's uncovered through research he's undertaken for his third book on Purpose (this one covers personal purpose) We discuss Australia's role in the Purpose movement and explore what is inhibiting big business in Australia from grasping the opportunity that purpose presents Afdhel shares his view on the 4 C's holding Australian business back We discuss these 4C's and other contributors, including 'fear'; and the role of boards. Link to an article Afdhel wrote on Five Mistakes Boards Make When Thinking About Purpose, for Forbes Magazine Afdhel shares some Australian stats from a recent Porter Novelli study on the relationship between Purpose and Reputation in the minds of Australians We exchange our (pretty consistent) thoughts on the different stages of Purpose We have a great discussion on the power of purpose and the growth opportunity that so many traditionally-minded businesses are missing out on We discuss the need for Purpose to start from the inside-out and why this is so important and Afdhel highlights Conspiracy of Love's GPS to Purpose Methodology (Gifts, Passions, Service) Afdhel shares some pearls of wisdom – advice for people within organisations who see the opportunity that purpose presents but are not sure about what action to take Connect with Afdhel Linkedin  Conspiracy Of Love website  Good Is The New Cool website  Good Is The New Cool on Instagram

Hello, Pittsburgh. I'm excited to introduce a brand-new season for you – and it's jam-packed with unique episodes and bonus content. Season 8 has been an incredible one for me to record and produce, and I can't wait to share the full episodes with you.I had the great honor and privilege of interviewing attorney, Edgar Snyder - a person that I admire for the firm he has built, the trail he has blazed, and the philanthropic work he has done in Pittsburgh. I've been watching Edgar Snyder on TV since I was a kid, and I'm sure many of you have as well. I know everyone in Pittsburgh knows who Edgar is, but you may not know his personal journey and what he had to go through in order to build his firm. He shares that story plus a whole lot more in his candid interview with me for the podcast.Just before the holidays, I recorded my first “live audience” podcast with Corry Smith, owner of CorEats. We held the event at Café Conmigo in Wexford. Corry is a thoughtful and energetic business owner with a tremendous origin story, and I had a wonderful time interviewing her for the show. You'll definitely want to make sure that you catch this debut “live” episode. It was a real pleasure to have some prior guests come back onto the program for a group discussion, which is a new format that I decided to try for this season. The first group includes Matt Marietti, owner of de Fer Coffee & Tea, Fiore Moletz, co-owner of Burgh'ers Brewing, and John Vella, owner of The John Vella Salon. And the second session features Kristen Ricupero, owner of Financial Fitness Coaching, Wendy Gilch, owner of SellingLater.com, and Jessie Tait, owner of Enspra. In these small business roundtable discussions, we cover the latest developments in their businesses, what's happened since they were last on the show, dealing with the constantly evolving covid situation, and a variety of other business topics and ideas. In addition to all of this, I was recently a guest on the “Evolution of Brand” podcast, which is a new show created, produced, and hosted by Jason Cercone. In our conversation, we talked a lot about podcasting, marketing, and creating a niche for your content and business. I plan to drop this interview as a bonus in the feed. So, if you've been curious to know more about my reasons for creating the Proprietors of Pittsburgh Podcast and some of the strategy behind it, then you'll want to check this one out.I'd like to thank all of you for helping this podcast experience incredible growth in 2021, and I can't wait to see where things go in 2022. I know we're starting off right with this blockbuster season. If you have ideas for the podcast, know someone that would be an excellent guest, or if you just want to share some feedback, please reach out to me at my contact info below. If the past year and a half has taught us anything, it's that the ability and willingness to change are critical attributes for every business owner. Adaptation is important to survival, and it's always been a mantra in modern business. But the pandemic has challenged us more than any other event in recent times. The really interesting thing is that entrepreneurs who are growth oriented and open to ideas tend to have an advantage when faced with change under difficult circumstances. In other words, they are not overly romantic about their business concepts. Instead, they are more interested in the best ideas and doing what actually works in the marketplace. In this final episode of Season 6, Mike Sharp, owner of the Sharp Insurance Agency, talks with me about the power of adaptation and change. We discuss what we've both seen and experienced during the pandemic, including some creative examples of small business survival. We also go through several ways that small business owners can position themselves to be nimble and flexible in an uncertain world. The ability to pivot has been front and center in our concept of business and startups for a while now, but this recent macro-economic shock has put it to the test like never before. If you have any questions or if you'd like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. If you own a business, then the inevitable reality is that you are also a salesperson. You may not think of yourself as one, and you probably didn't get into business to hone your sales skills, but this is a fact of entrepreneurship. Understanding this distinction can mean the difference between starting fast or slow during the critical early days of a company's life. The good news is that “sales” no longer has to mean high-pressure tactics or sleight of hand designed to get people to buy. Those days are over, and consumers see right through the tricks. People want to choose to “buy” instead of being “sold” to. In today's information age with an abundance of choices, the public now holds the power. In this episode, Mike Sharp, owner of the Sharp Insurance Agency, joins me as my guest host for a lively discussion about this consequential and relevant topic. We talk about the importance of listening, asking questions, and assessing fit with clients and customers. More than ever before, selling is about educating and advising. It's about becoming a trusted guide, not about sleazy practices. This will be welcome news to anyone with a natural aversion to selling. Mike and I cover a lot of territory in our conversation, as we both relate how selling has shaped our experiences as employees and business owners. If you have any questions or if you'd like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. We review the highlights and its main premise, which makes it easy to follow along with our conversation. So many great insights and ideas came out of our discussion. Hey, Pittsburghers! I just wanted to say a few words about the pandemic, the state of the podcast, and what we've all been through this past year-and-a half. Season 5, which I started at the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, has been a season of learning and adaptation. Like everyone else, I had to figure out how to go virtual and remote with my work and art. I'm so proud of the episodes in Season 5. If you want to get a feel for how the pandemic has affected many of our small businesses, just listen to these episodes. While the past year-and-a-half has been challenging and difficult and even tragic for many people, I still see hope and optimism every day in my work and in the people that I speak with. I don't know what the future holds, but I do know that it will include change. It will require flexibility, nimbleness, and adaptation. Like everyone else, I see what happens each day and adjust accordingly. Right now, that means I'm doing some of my interviews in-person. In other cases, they are still virtual. As I look to the near future, I see the podcast taking on a hybrid form. My interviews and conversations will consist of both of these modes. I look forward to the day when nearly all of my episodes are in-person. That's the essence of this local show – dynamic and energetic dialogue between people who love small businesses and our great city. So, enjoy this special Season 6 with me and my “guest host” Mike Sharp. When Katy and Jose Rosa found themselves out of work in 2019, they decided to try something completely different. After years of working in oil and gas, they were worn out by the ups and downs of such a cyclical industry. Much to Jose's surprise, Katy had just started to feed their family 100% plant-based meals. He couldn't believe how great the food tasted and how good he felt, so he naturally wanted to share it with extended family and friends. It was right around this time that they were asked to cater a company event. That evening, their food was a big hit, and the idea for Everest Eats was born.Although their menu is totally plant-based, they continuously receive rave reviews from vegans and meat eaters alike. The homemade ingredients, rich flavors, and hearty nature of the meals have wide appeal and have won over followers of all types of diets. Katy and Jose are inspired by their two children, Everest and Denali, and creating a sustainable business that is environmentally sensitive is an important factor in the choices that they make. Almost two years into operation and Everest Eats is a full-blown family business with Katy's mom and dad now involved in the creation of the mouth-watering dishes and desserts that come from their commercial kitchen. If you have any questions or if you'd like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below.
