We explore the subtle art of Proxemics and its role in building trust. We explore cross-cultural variations and The Vertical Space that shapes our classrooms and boardrooms. The Space of the Senses looks at all the personal senses, from your co-worker's strong-smelling office lunch to the volume levels required to be heard and to connect. And then we look at the Virtual Space and how we can easily feel that space being invaded online.Once we understand both these tangible and intangible shared spaces we can learn to build our human connection. Relationship Capital is the ignitor to the flame of difference when your attempting to establish a sense of allyship and understanding. When attempting to travel down a road less travelled and connect with others. When it comes to: Trust in America: Do Americans trust the police? Here are some findings from the Pew Research Center. The relationship between the public and police across the United States was brought into sharp focus over the course of 2020 and 2021 following the high-profile killings of several Black Americans by police, including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the worldwide protests that followed. The Center reports only 10% of young black teens and adults believe they'll be treated fairly by police as compared to 18% of Hispanic youth and 16% of Asians who were asked the same question. The highest level of trust came from whites at a clip of 32% Therefore, I am motivated to ask the question what's the key to bridging the gap and providing the police and the youth they serve with better camaraderie between the two parties? For some in depth answers to this very question I want to tell you about the Teen And Police Service Academy. The Teen And Police Service Academy (TAPS) was founded in 2011 by the late Chief Brian Lumpkin and Criminologist, Dr. Everette Penn. At the time, the Houston Police Department was granted funds to create a program that would enhance and build a more trusting relationship between teens and police in Houston. Chief Lumpkin, Dr. Penn, and Officer Mott took on this mission and worked collaboratively to build out the TAPS Academy program. In the Spring of 2012, the first Teen And Police Service Academy was launched at Beechnut Academy, a Houston Independent School District alternative school. Data showed there were dramatic positive behavioral changes between youth and police among those who participated in the program. Now, TAPS Academy is a 501-C-3 non-profit organization and has expanded into more than 30 schools nationwide. A distinct component of the program is that TAPS Academy-trained officers spearhead the lessons. Giving law enforcement and the youth a unique chance to get to know each other on equal footing, in order to exchange ideas and learn from each other while also learning an array of life-building skills such as drug and alcohol prevention, conflict resolution, the importance of mental health, safe driving, service learning and more. Currently, TAPS Academy provides 5 programs: TAPS Academy, an 11-week curriculum-based program, TEENPOL – a TEA-accredited class in Texas, TAPS Clubs, Summer Leadership Workshops, and the SB-30 Community Safety Course. Dr. Everette B. Penn is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Teen and Police Service (TAPS) Academy in Houston, Texas. TAPS Academy's mission is to bridge the gap between youth and police and reduce crime through education, skill building, and service-learning TAPS Academy's TeenPol program is a Texas Education Agency approved curriculum which grants one high school credit to students upon completion. TAPS Academy reaches over 1,500 youth annually internationally. Dr. Penn joined me this week to tell me more. Join Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa Fellowship for a two-part look at parsha "Tazria" (Leviticus/Vayikra chapters 12 through 13) -- and several lessons that are dramatic, not only because they are now so "politically incorrect," but so at odds with what we have seen in the world - for centuries even - that the contrast is almost stunning. Still though, there's something strangely 'familiar' in the detail here, even if much of it may have been "turned on its head." The Erev Shabbat reading of the parsha is first: https://hebrewnationonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/SSM-4-21-23-Tazria-teaching-podcast-x.mp3 In Torah cycles past, Mark has suggested that since the plague in this parsha, tzaraat (NOT 'leprosy,' which is quite different) for literally centuries, and certainly seems to be a physical skin condition resulting from a spiritual isse, we might ask the question, 'Why?' Or, why NOT? And, since, "those He loves, He chastens," doesn't that say something negative about a world where even shame no longer seems to modify truly insane actions? So, this time around, it's a different question that sets the stage: Do we think that even if YHVH was to bring a massive plague of tzaraat on those who Evil Tongues are SO evil, that it would even make a difference? But then again, here's food for thought: Maybe we DID have just such a 'plague'. Consider, The Adversary, HaSatan, is not very original. When we had real 'cohenim,' they were to look at the detailed description of the plague in this parsha, and then determine, literally DECLARE, that it was, or was not, 'tzaraat'. Then the 'metzora' who was afflicted was to go outside the camp, maintain separation, and warn people away by saying, "unclean, unclean," to anyone who approached. With the Gain-of-Function Wuhan Plague, which we now know was developed on the US taxpayer's dime, it was the High Priest of the Great God Science, Tony Fauci, who declared who and what was "unclean." They had to put on the Mask of Shame, and maintain Social Distance, and even engage in ritual injections. But the "Evil Speech" part was certainly familiar! There is SO much in this portion...once the 'dots connect,' you can't UN-see it. If you like what you hear and want to help out this independent show you can find me on Buy me a coffee by searching The Mastercast. I'd really appreciate it. This week's review is onStrangeland - No Spoilers! This true crime podcast from Audiochuck covers the 2003 triple homicide of mother, her 2-year-old son, and their nanny in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Also known as the Mile Massacre or the Koreatown Slayings, the execution of almost an entire family has left the Koreatown community with a mystery for what has become two decades. Hosted journalist Ben Adair and interpreter Sharon Choi, the podcast covers not only the crime but how crime can effect immigrant neighbrohoods and the investigations into those crimes very differently. It's a crictal and well-deserved look at how different the experience of immigrants can be in our criminal justice system. There are outside interviews weaved into the narrative and without trying spoil anything I'll say the podcast plays a part in investigation. The show has 4.2 out of 5 stars with 1,300 ratings on Apple Podcasts. There is some criticism of what seems to be staged dialouge between the hosts but I didn't find that it made the pod unlistenable. There are ten total episodes that are about 34 minutes long on average. The last episode does mention new episodes will come out as there are updates in the case. Overall a podcast everyone should add to their queue. Similar pods: The Other Latif, Lost in Panama, and Tom Brown's BodyAll right, guys, that's all for this week but remember if you want to see the cover art, sources or the written transcript for this episode be sure to check out the show notes. The writer, satirist and broadcaster Armando Iannucci, returns to the New Statesman Podcast to co-host our third series of Westminster Reimagined. In six special episodes Iannucci explores parts of British public life he believes to be broken, and is joined by guests from inside and outside Westminster to work out how to fix things. In this episode, Iannucci and Anoosh Chakelian, the New Statesman's Britain editor, examine why in Britain the rich are richer and the poor are poorer than in other European countries. The income gap is the largest it has been in ten years, food-bank use has doubled since 2014 and nearly a third of low-income families are unable to heat their homes; meanwhile the richest 1 per cent of households in the UK are worth £3.6 million each. Special guests for the episode Dominic Watters, a social worker living on the breadline who campaigns against food insecurity and wrote Social Distance in Social Work: Covid Capsule One, and Adrienne Buller, director of research at the Common Wealth think tank and author of The Value of a Whale. The panel discusses living in fuel and food deserts, how hostility toward the “undeserving poor” is baked into the welfare system, and whether a minister for income inequality might be one potential solution. Podcast listeners can subscribe to the New Statesman for just £1 a week for 12 weeks using our special offer. Just visit newstatesman.com/podcastoffer. Hosted on Acast. When the global pandemic set in during the spring of 2020, it left sports enthusiasts longing for the days of old when we could watch a game on tv, road trip to a new stadium, or simply be around our loved ones talking sports. On this episode, Dan Reischel of Pennsylvania joins The Brothers Brandt to share his pandemic initiative to have a game of catch with 162 different people, as a way of socially distancing, yet still staying connected with loved ones and dozens of new friends along the way. Dan recently achieved his 162 goal by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch with his father at Yankees Stadium with Aaron Judge. Enjoy this special story!
4 out of 10 adults believe we're past the pandemic phase of Covid, but Steve wishes we could go back to social distancing!
The pandemic exposed and intensified the deep-rooted problems gripping the nation – from poverty to precarity to underfunded public services. But social distance has been at the heart of our biggest challenges since long before Covid-19 struck: in particular, the distance that those in power often keep from the issues they are in charge of solving. If proximity to a problem makes us better placed to understand how to address it, then it's no wonder we are faltering. The distance – be it geographical, economic, or cultural – between those who make decisions and those on the receiving end of them has never been clearer, and the parameters of the discussion about social inequality are set by those who have little experience of it. Prize-winning writer, commentator and rapper Darren McGarvey interrogates the social remoteness at the root of our biggest problems, and explores what it would take to centre lived experience in developing clear-sighted, hopeful solutions.#RSAinequalityBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/ueembDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://instagram.com/rsa_events/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RSAEventsLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rsaeventsoff...
