27 - Where Ancient Practices Meet Modern Technology to Optimize Your Brain & Improve Your Mental Health in Recovery w/ Dr. Patrick Porter, PhD

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2021 61:12

Summary:  Here to share how essential it is to address your brain and nervous system health so you can feel your best and live your most happiest, healthiest most impactful life in recovery. In this episode Dr. Patrick Porter and I discuss the science behind brain optimization and how ancient practices that many civilizations were integrating into their everyday life is more applicable today than ever before when it comes healing and balancing your brain. Dr. Porter has taken the five practices he believes most in and combined them into a piece of technology in which he created called BrainTap to optimize brain function so you can feel your best. The five practices that Dr. Porter has brilliantly combined into this unique device are meditation, self talk, music, frequency and light. He says when these five are working synergistically they have the power to influence brain wave states and increase neural plasticity; the natural ability for the brain to re-wire itself to create more healthy connections that transfer into your everyday life. Dr. Porter shares how being the son of an alcoholic was a complete gift after his dad found the power of meditation from a local priest that forever changed his life. As a result his dad taught all nine of Dr. Porter's siblings. Which profoundly changed Dr. Porter's life and birthed his life's work to become a doctor and highly successful entrepreneur.  In this episode you will leave with having learned:  Why it's essential that we need to shift from the surviving brain to the thriving brain if we want to improve our mental, physical and emotional health.  Why meditation is the super power when it comes to recovery and healing and addressing the root cause of addiction which is a dysregulated nervous system.  We talk about why learning about brain wave states and how to balance them is critical to transforming past negative thoughts and reactions to more healthy ones of empowerment and freedom.  What it means when you “feel stuck” and how to become unstuck by addressing your brain state.  Why sleep is so important—for example most of your neurotransmitters that support your brain are made right in your gut during high quality sleep and to feel good, getting proper sleep in a must.  Why positive self talk is so important - in fact Dr. Porter shares the research shows we can change over 2,300 gene expressions with our self talk alone.  How the research taken from some of the most ancient practices and when combined in one system which is what Dr. Porter has done in his new new BrainTap device can supercharge your brain and get you on the fast track to health and healing.. I'm going to second that.. I use  Brain Tap once and sometimes twice a day and I notice a big change in my sleep, relaxation and the beliefs I tell myself. It's a super cool technology  And one thing I find really fascinating Dr. Porter shares with us how being the son of an alcoholic was a huge blessing and how it lead him to his greatest discoveries and the work he is does today supporting others.  About Dr. Patrick Porter:  Dr. Patrick K. Porter, PhD is an award-winning author, educator, consultant, entrepreneur, and speaker. With 30 years of experience operating the largest self-help franchise, he has become a highly sought-after expert within the personal improvement industry, having sold over 3 million of his self-help products worldwide.  Dr. Porter has produced an arsenal of nearly 700 audio-recorded motivational programs and creative visualization processes, and has sold more than 3 million books and recordings worldwide. Summary: Most of you know, what inspires me to do the work I do today, including bringing this podcast to you was from having to go on my own personal healing journey from trauma, addiction and chronic illness. When I was going through my darkest days suffering from ulcerative colitis and found myself with two organs on the table, my liver and my colon. I didn't know what to do. All I knew was that I had to leave western medicine. I did just that and one of my first calls was to today's guest, Dan Hegerich. Dan is a terminal cancer survivor and an amazing human being. I knew he could help. Dan's approach to integrative wellness started me off on the right path and honestly I'm not sure I would be where I am today without him. His knowledge, wisdom and expertise as it relates to integrative holistic healing and his personal story of healing from terminal cancer I felt had to be shared with you. Episode Summary: This episode is near and dear to me because I've personally witnessed the suffering of my clients on psychiatric drugs and wanting to come off but not knowing where to turn. After hearing Dr. Jodie speak on “The Dr. Gundry Podcast” I knew I needed to connect with her. In this episode we take a deep dive into Dr. Jodie's world of holistic psychiatry and the proven data and research that is now available that shows us how to take a more practical effective approach to addressing mental health naturally. We discuss the importance of addressing the whole person when it comes to getting well and how the main stream medical's failing approach to symptom based management. Dr. Jodie believes as a doctor “we need to be asking the clients different questions.” Questions that validate how the patient is feeling rather than pathologizing them with a diagnoses. To take time to listen to their symptoms and the message and means they hold as a way to get to the root cause of why they are expressing themselves in the mind/body of the person in need. She states that ACE's (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and trauma are often at their root. Dr. Jodie shares with us from her personal toolbox of healing modalities, the tips, practices, supplements and modalities that she uses with her clients including the power of the breath to regulate autonomic nervous systems and restore the mind/body back into balance. We also discussed why Dr. Jodie believes neurotransmitters play a roll but are not the leading cause of mental health disorders and how you can address them with various supplements, diet and lifestyle changes. At end of the show Dr. Jodie shares about her book “Healing Depression without Medication: A Psychiatrist's Guide to Balancing Mind, Body and Soul."   About Dr. Jodie Skillicorn: Dr. Jodie Skillicorn is board certified Psychiatrist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Integrative Medicine. She is the author of the book Healing Depression Without Medications: A Psychiatrist's Guide to Balancing Mind, Body, and Soul.  Dr. Jodie's passion is in guiding, supporting and teaching her patients self care techniques that help balance their bodies and minds, thus empowering them to take an active role in their own unique healing journeys on the road to optimal health. She believes by teaching people these skills it may also help in reducing and often eliminating the need for medications. Dr. Jodie has a private practice working out of her home in Ohio where she integrates conventional medical training with evidence-based holistic methods that include breathwork, meditation, yoga, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT),(EMDR), Mind-Body Medicine, nutrition, supplements, exercise and more.  She believes strongly in the body's ability to heal itself if given the resources, support and the importance of empowering patients to take back their health through simple, but effective lifestyle changes. SUMMARY:  In this episode Dr. Paul Epstein and I discuss the connection between our biography (the story of what happened to us) and our biology (how we came to be this way). From early on in his career Dr. E has been interested in not just treating illness through natural therapies and healthy lifestyle choices but also through the mind-body connection to help people turn their pain & addictions into a journey of self healing and awakening. By engaging his patients in the healing of their own consciousness, Dr. E has seen amazing results by taking an integrative approach and treating the whole person mind, body & spirit.   As a young boy and witnessing his father suffer from shell shock from World War II— what is now know as PTSD and later dying on the operating table from bypass surgery. Dr. E intuitively knew his dad died from the pain of war and vowed to support others by helping them address their pain in a holistic way and not bypass it. After becoming a naturopathic doctor and practicing mind/body medicine. Dr. E has helped many patients to heal through natural therapies, his living questions and helping them to radically shift their relationship to their pain, to see with new eyes and allow space for the body to positively respond to get well.   Dr. E has been one of my personal mentors for the last 3 years and truly a pioneer in Mind/Body medicine. Much of what is being taught through epigenetics, the mind/body connection and radically shifting your lifestyle; Dr. E has been teaching since the 1970's. I am truly grateful to learn from him and I hope you enjoy the show!   More about Dr. Epstein:   Paul Epstein, ND is a Naturopathic Physician, mind-body therapist, mindfulness meditation teacher and speaker.
