Syriana is a 2005 geopolitical thriller written and directed by Stephen Gaghan, based loosely on former CIA case officer Robert Baer's memoir, See No Evil: The True Story of a Ground Soldier in the CIA's War on Terrorism. The film weaves together multiple storylines that involve a CIA agent, a U.S. energy analyst, a major transnational law firm, and an oil-rich Persian Gulf kingdom. It tackles complex themes of corruption, power, and terrorism from a distinctly post-9/11 vantage point. The film also suggests how law operates in transnational settings and how it seeks—but often fails—to tame the forces of ambition, greed, and power that drive the oil industry and America's role in it. Joining me to talk about Syriana is Margaret (Peggy) McGuinness, a professor at St. John's University School of Law and a leading scholar of international law. George Clooney contemplated suicide, writer-director Stephen Gaghan was kidnapped, and Harrison Ford almost played "Bob". Warner Brothers gave the film Syriana an unlimited research budget, and the resulting script netted one of the best casts of an adult drama in film history (George Clooney, Christopher Plummer, Jeffrey Wright, Chris Cooper, Matt Damon, Amanda Peet, Tom McCarthy, Max Minghella, Alexander Siddig, Tim Blake Nelson, William Hurt, and Mark Strong). Yet Syriana did not turn a profit in its theatrical release, and audiences were mixed on it. Why? This movie is incredible, and I did a deep dive into it for this episode. This harrowing drama was written and directed by Stephen Gaghan and features a star-studded cast with George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Jeffrey Wright. The threats are real, and America seems to be a lot of them as people put their thumbs on the scales of economy and justice. Let's ponder the questions, “What level of corruption will create a facade of a functioning society? Is shadowy corruption better than a feudal state putting people to the sword? Are you depressed yet?” Thank you to Robert for commissioning this episode! You can get your very own custom commissioned podcast by visiting https://support.baldmove.com/. Episode 264."Hell or High Water"Actor.Dylan Kenin.Dylan fell in love with acting as a kid while directing his brother and friends on a home VHS camera. He got a National-Merit scholarship to USC, where he won the Outstanding BFA Performance Award and earned a degree in Theatre. The A-list directors he's since worked with reads like a who's-who of Academy Award nominations, including Denis Villeneuve on Sicario (2015), Stephen Gaghan on Gold (2016), Antoine Fuqua on The Magnificent Seven (2016), Andrew Niccol on Good Kill (2014), David Mackenzie on Hell or High Water (2016), as well as Seth MacFarlane on A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014) (and The Orville (2017)), and Joseph Kosinski on Only the Brave (2017)... to name just a few. Adding to the list of notable scene partners, Dylan can now be seen opposite Liam Neeson in The Marksman (2021), directed by Robert Lorenz. You can currently find him with Academy Award winner Regina King in The Harder They Fall (2021) and opposite Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie in Taylor Sheridan's Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021).----Welcome, Dylan Kenin.Instagram: Monday Morning Critic Podcast.Facebook: Monday Morning Critic Podcast.Twitter: @mdmcriticWebsite: www.mmcpodcast.comContact: Mondaymorningcritic@gmail.com
This week's show is brought to you from the mind of everyone's favourite sea defecator, Howie. There's been a notable rise in diversity on screen over the last few years as evidenced by the increasing number of LGBTQ+ characters so we thought we would celebrate them with this week's Top 5. We did our very best not to offend anyone! The McConaissance attempted to continue with 2016's drama GOLD, starring the Texan alongside Edgar Ramirez in director Stephen Gaghan's inspired by true events story of the Bre-x mining scandal. It's the late 1980's and prospector and mining company owner Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey) is so desperate to impress his late father he literally follows his dreams to Indonesia, alongside geologist and heartthrob Michael Acosta in order to hunt for gold. There are some great actors in this; Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Kebbel, Corey Stoll, all wasted on a disappointing script which mined little in the way of emotional drama from its characters. An insufferably sweaty performance from McConaughey, there's little to like about his Kenny and not a lot interesting to say about him. Avoid, although do listen to us talk about it. We finish up this week's show with a look at Netflix's new animated series Q-FORCE. When the dashing valedictorian of the American Intelligence Agency (AIA), Steve Maryweather, comes out as gay during his graduation ceremony it appears his career has been ended instantaneously. Ten years on and managing a team of LGBT+ misfit spies without any cases assigned to them, Steve decides to take matters into his own hands and initiate his own wetwork when a Chechen terrorist conducts business from a local gay bar. Quips aplenty in this fun, and very gay, show! We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Director Jonathan Demme had the reputation as one of the most humanist filmmakers — meaning his films had the ethos of “no one is evil” and everyone had their reasons. In that regard, Rachel Getting Married might have been his masterpiece of this ethos. On today's episode, I'm joined by the film's editor, Tim Squyres, in an episode that double as both a career retrospective and a deep-dive into the film. We talk:- his second feature as editor being Ang Lee's first as feature director;- how he's since edited every Lee film except one;- the sequential art origins behind Lee's Hulk film adaptation;- the tech specs and future of High Frame Rates. Also:- why the freeform shooting of Rachel led to many technical challenges;- why Demme, like Lee, never gave him notes during shooting;- his other work with Demme, an adaptation of Ibsen's A Master Builder;- and how close Squyres came to editing Demme's final film, Ricki and the Flash.Tim Squyres is a two-time Academy Award nominee for Best Editing (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Life of Pi). Along with a career-spanning collaboration with director Ang Lee, he's also edited for Jonathan Demme, Robert Altman, Akiva Goldsman, Angelina Jolie, and Stephen Gaghan. He lives in Maplewood, New Jersey.Rachel Getting Married is available on VOD, digital, and Blu-ray from Sony Pictures.

It’s Memorial Day in the United States, but instead of covering a bloody war flick, we decided to talk about the (failed) War On Drugs. Steven Soderbergh’s Oscar-winner is complicated, complex, even confusing and it’s certainly not afraid to tread a new path with its style and look. The experimental director beautifully balances the 3 main stories in Stephen Gaghan’s script, even if he doesn’t shoot those stories particularly well. Twenty years on, this remains an unappealing-looking picture. Bev took issue with that and also with certain elements of the Catherine Zeta-Jones & Erika Christensen storylines (especially the moralizing). Ryan has to confess to some shoddy memories of Traffic’s great (sometimes deleted) scenes we’ve discussed in prior episodes because they don’t actually exist. (!) The Next 196 Project hacks into all those details in this story of rats & traitors, so settle in for over an hour of our yibber yab about one of the primo drug movies. Well, Actually: Stephen Mirrione’s name DOES seem to have an “E” sound at the end (rhymes with “baloney”). Also, Requiem For A Dream got ***1/2 from Roger Ebert (not quite ****). Also also, Brian Eno’s song is called “An Ending (Ascent)“. You’d be helped to make that run over the border with your highly illegal drugs by filling up with Sparkplug Coffee. Using our promo code (“top100project”) will net you a 20% discount when you’re ready to pay. Twi-twi-twits? Yup. @moviefiend51 and @bevellisellis Our website is top100project.com Next week, we exchange thoughts about the crazy Ah-nuld sci-fi action flick Total Recall
