Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 37 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the latest film in their William Friedkin series, Killer Joe (2011). After the successful collaboration with screenwriter Tracey Letts on his last film Bug, Freidkin went right back to work with him on an adaptation of Letts's debut play about a family who hire a corrupt police detective with a side career as a contract killer to take out their estranged mother for her insurance policy. Based in a small Texas town, Killer Joe is slowly unfolds into a twisted, violent American Southern Gothic crime drama that explodes with one of the craziest endings in the acclaimed director's career. Ryan and Jay break down their reactions to the film, if the ending justifies it's grizzly conclusion, the overall journey of the McConaissance, fried chicken legs and so much more. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h35m. The guys will be back next week to conclude their series covering the films of William Friedkin with a review of his last film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. You can stream the film on Paramount+. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Barry and Julia tackle the quasi-classic 2003 romantic comedy "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." Your hosts ask exactly what it means to get "frosted" and why so many rom-coms are about couples who constantly lie, bicker and break up, but are somehow "perfect" for each another (?!). Finally, on the pre-McConaissance scale of "alright-alright-alright" to "right on," where does this one rank alongside "Failure to Launch" and "Fool's Gold"? Prepare for all this and multiple references to Krull The Warrior King. Follow us on Instagram at soimarriedafilmcritic_podcast. If you like our show, please write a review.

Alright, alright, alright! Russ and Jared are back with another Trailer Trash, this time from just before the start of the McConaissance, one of the last great crappy rom-coms of the pre-2010s. That's right, the guys are talking about Fool's Gold (2008), starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland, Alexis Dziena, Ewen Bremner, Ray Winstone, Kevin Hart, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, and Brian Hooks. Will there be gold? We know there'll be fools aplenty!
In this episode we discuss one of our favorite TV shows, True Detective, and how that year was a renaissance period for Matthew McConaughey's career. We discuss other stuff too, but you'll have to listen to the episode to find out what we discussed.
People often think of Matthew McConaughey as a rom-com actor before the McConaissance, but he starred in big-budget blockbusters, too! The story behind Sahara is incredibly interesting, with lawsuits and studio malfeasance galore. The movie obviously got mixed reviews, and Jacob, Kieran, and Sam determine if it's truly earned them. The Film Magazine: The Whale (2022) Review by Katie DoyleAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) Review by Sam Sewell-PetersonTFM RedbubbleDonate to TFMMusic: Awakening (Instrumental) by Wataboi https://soundcloud.com/wataboiCreative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0Music promoted by FDL Music https://youtu.be/X2oQNUOmk2k

A film that proves a Rom-Com actor can lead a thriller with a star-studded cast, as well as showing that even lawyers don't need fancy offices to get the job done. The Lincoln Lawyer (2011) is a thriller filled with legal intrigue and one of the most charismatic casts you'll ever find. Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a LA based lawyer who runs his "firm" out of the backseat of a Lincoln Town Car. He is hired to represent playboy & real estate heir Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), who is pleading innocent to a murder charge. Haller tries to unravel the mystery with the help of his PI best friend (William H. Macey), DA ex-wife (Marisa Tomei), and an incredible cast of additional characters/actors. Once the case has been closed, we sit down with Anna Hendrick, Senior Investigator at Quest Research & Investigations (QRI). QRI is a firm of professionally licensed Private Investigators, that specialize in uncovering hidden information through interviews, in depth research, and thoughtful analysis. Anna joins us to discuss how she started her career in investigating, comparing the portrayal of Private Investigators in film, and real-world examples where QRI's work helped serve justice. *Sorry the episode just cuts off. We don't know what happened* At the end of each episode, we each make a current ranking of the films so far. This may only be the third movie of the season, but it quickly earned its place at the bottom of our lists where it made itself comfortable enough to stay. There are many problematic things to say about Dallas Buyers Club and we certainly aren't the first to say them. When the actor Matthew McConaughey dropped his rom-com act to pursue hard-hitting dramas, Hollywood called it a “McConaissance.” Now we may be on the cusp of the next one, as he mulls over a run for governor of Texas. McConaughey is the first to admit he's not a conventional pick for Texans. “I'm not a man who comes at politics from a political background,” he says. “I'm a statesman-philosopher, folk-singing poet.” Even so, he has some thoughts about the current political climate, observing, “It's necessary to be aggressively centric, at least, to possibly salvage democracy in America right now.”In this conversation, Kara Swisher asks McConaughey to unpack his thoughts on key issues like mask mandates, abortion and voting rights, and what he actually means when he says he's “measuring” a run for governor. They also discuss his recent memoir, “Greenlights,” as he doles out some of his life philosophies and cackles in good humor at the critical reviews that Kara insists on reading him. This episode contains strong language. You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway, and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher.

This week's show is brought to you from the mind of everyone's favourite sea defecator, Howie. There's been a notable rise in diversity on screen over the last few years as evidenced by the increasing number of LGBTQ+ characters so we thought we would celebrate them with this week's Top 5. We did our very best not to offend anyone! The McConaissance attempted to continue with 2016's drama GOLD, starring the Texan alongside Edgar Ramirez in director Stephen Gaghan's inspired by true events story of the Bre-x mining scandal. It's the late 1980's and prospector and mining company owner Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey) is so desperate to impress his late father he literally follows his dreams to Indonesia, alongside geologist and heartthrob Michael Acosta in order to hunt for gold. There are some great actors in this; Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Kebbel, Corey Stoll, all wasted on a disappointing script which mined little in the way of emotional drama from its characters. An insufferably sweaty performance from McConaughey, there's little to like about his Kenny and not a lot interesting to say about him. Avoid, although do listen to us talk about it. We finish up this week's show with a look at Netflix's new animated series Q-FORCE. When the dashing valedictorian of the American Intelligence Agency (AIA), Steve Maryweather, comes out as gay during his graduation ceremony it appears his career has been ended instantaneously. Ten years on and managing a team of LGBT+ misfit spies without any cases assigned to them, Steve decides to take matters into his own hands and initiate his own wetwork when a Chechen terrorist conducts business from a local gay bar. Quips aplenty in this fun, and very gay, show! We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Finally, we sit down with actor J.R. Ramirez to his mindset, Power Death Scene, Tom Brady/Bucs, and more. The season finale of Manifest airs 6/10 on NBC at 8/7c. We appreciate you.
We've taken the show on the road this week, with one half of the show in Hawaii and the other half now on the wrong side of 33. In a tangent heavy episode, early tangents include birthdays, Scottie Pippen, and Swedish beach reads. We loved Mare of Easttown episode 3 on HBO Max and can't recommend the show enough (10:28). Other recommendations include Formula 1: Drive to Survive on Netflix (27:40), the best show you're still not watching. Non-recs this week include The Big Shot - HBO Max (37:20) and The Girlfriend Experience, Season 3 on STARZ (39:27), which leads to a recommendation of Logan Lucky - Hulu (41:55). Finally, you shouldn't watch Stowaway on Netflix (44:40) but you should watch Younger on Hulu (52:17).

This week's Empire Podcast goes Down Under -- metaphorically speaking, of course -- as Chris Hewitt has fun-filled chats with two wonderful Antipodean actors. First off, there's Isla Fisher, the Australian star of Blithe Spirit, who tells Chris all about her affinity for accents, Hot Rod, and working with Judi Dench, while Chris makes an impromptu purchase. Then Chris has a chat, and a Kurt Russell quiz, with Baby Done star, the New Zealander comedian and actor, Rose Matafeo. Then, in the virtual podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, for the first time this year, Amon Warmann, as they exchange facts in The Three Fact Structure, talk about actors and directors who deserve a McConaissance, discuss the week's movie news including that big MCU rumour, and review Baby Done, MLK/FBI, Outside The Wire, and The White Tiger. A jam-packed show, and no mistake. Crikey! Enjoy.

It's the best and worst of everyone's favourite period during the 2010's! A time of Hope and Redemption. A time to realise that miracles are real! That's right, it's the McConaissance! In 1985 Dallas, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease. A suicidal American befriends a Japanese man lost in a forest near Mt. Fuji and the two search for a way out. Each week we take the best and worst films from a filmmaker or franchise and discuss why one worked and one didn't. And we use freakin maths to determine the best and worst, so no arguing. Remember 2014's McConaissance? Thanks to a newly-unearthed and beautifully brutal Trump interview and her cameo in The Undoing, 2020 marks the beginning of Connie Chung's Conniessance. The 74 year-old news legend brings a Gatorade cooler full of tea to spill on and about, among others, grumpy, frumpy scene partner Hugh Grant, former TV pal David Letterman, onetime CBS Evening News co-anchor Dan Rather as well as Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer, who treated her to a Jeff Gillooly/Nancy Kerrigan style welcome when she joined ABC News. Plus: Covid-era homicidal feelings about hubby Maury Povich. Oh, and here's where you can watch Andrew Goldman's unhinged 2015 doc about getting fired from The New York Times, The Desk. https://player.vimeo.com/video/123948379
Matthew McConaughey just keeps livin. In his new memoir, Greenlights, you hear how. Through the trials and tribulations, speed-bumps and roadblocks, the Oscar-winning actor has remained unwaveringly optimistic and full-hearted. Today he joins us to share selected scenes from his life, on-screen and off. We start with the whirlwind year of 1992 (3:15) before moving into lessons learned from the late Joel Schumacher (13:02) and his idol, Paul Newman (18:07). He also candidly reflects on his rom-com decade (28:34), how his parents' on-again, off-again marriage impacted him (34:17), the McConaissance, from Mud to True Detective to Killer Joe (40:05). Then, before we go, he shares his hopes for the future–his and ours both (51:00). Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/talk-easy-with-sam-fragoso. On this week's annotated deep dive, The Cultists present William Friedkin's ‘Killer Joe' (2011). Notable as the film that jump-started the brief but shinning “McConaissance," this charming humble tale tells the story of a group of morally bereft human trash-fire Texans who will do whatever it takes to kill mom. London and Benji explore how this “American southern-gothic, dark comedy, crime film” puts the joy back into casual matricide in a way that only a Friedkin-Letts collaboration can. (And why no watcher has ever been able to look at a chicken leg the same way ever again.) Episode Safeword: “vegan”
Our exploration of William Friedkin ends almost where it began, with his second collaboration with Tracy Letts, who, following the adaptation of his second play, Bug, adapts for the screen his first, Killer Joe. A key film in Matthew McConaughey's career, one of the first in what would become known as the McConaissance, Killer Joe sees his seductive, charming romcom persona repurposed to threatening, chilling effect in the ugly world of trailer parks and contract killing. We discuss THAT scene with the chicken leg, and compare and contrast it to THAT scene with the crucifix in The Exorcist, asking what might be outrageous about one but not the other. We ask what we're missing in Letts' screenplay that others see, and José argues that Friedkin has throughout his career been drawn to second-rate source material - material that here is unquestionably elevated by the cast, who are almost all excellent and believable, in particular Gina Gershon, of whom demanding things are asked, and Juno Temple, who carries with her an otherworldliness that lightens what is a very dark part in a very dark story. And we take the opportunity to think over the set of Friedkin films that we've now seen, including his biggest hits, and consider what we've learned, what his achievements and strengths are, where he fails or what he lacks, and where he stands amongst his contemporaries and peers. Recorded on 30th July 2020.

Charlie and George from the Retro Ramble Podcast join Flixwatcher remotely to review Charlie’s choice The Lincoln Lawyer. The Lincoln Lawyer is a 2011 drama/thriller film based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Michael Connelly and directed by Brad Furman. It stars Matthew McConaughey as The Lincoln Lawyer Mick Haller (so-called because his Lincoln car is his office) and has strong support from Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe, Josh Lucas, John Leguizamo, Michael Peña, Bryan Cranston and William H. Macy. Haller is hired to defend the son (Phillippe) of a wealthy Los Angeles businesswoman in an assault case, but the high profile case quickly turns after similarities with a previous case Haller worked arise. Part courtroom drama part whodunit, The Lincoln Lawyer is a fairly enjoyable film. Carried by McConaughey who (according to Helen’s chart) is the beginning of the McConaissance with The Lincoln Lawyer. Scores [supsystic-tables id=172] The Lincoln Lawyer scores pretty well in the Flixwatcher categories, very high on the small screen but its low repeat viewing brings the overall score to 3.6. 2019 is ending, but Double Edged Double Bill wants the last word! Joining Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani is film writer Brianna Zigler to talk two very divergent films from this strange year. First up is the bad pick Serenity, a thriller where Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway realize they may just be playthings in a boring game! Then, the good pick - as chosen by our listeners - The Irishman in which Martin Scorsese examines mob culture and reveals the sad lonely existence it leads to. So fun for the whole family! Plus, our trio answers all sorts of important questions. When did The McConaissance truly end? What has Robert De Niro done beyond the Dirty Grandpa Cinematic Universe? What two films will Adam & Thomas pick for next week's first episode looking back at the past decade? Well listen in to find out! This week, we're talking about two movies from cinematographer Caleb "Zooey's Dad" Deschanel: Never Look Away (2018) and Killer Joe (2011). One's a high point of the McConaissance, the other's a just-fine three hour German melodrama that was somehow nominated for three Oscars this year. Then, as they get into Dan Gilroy's Velvet Buzzsaw, they discuss Jake Gyllenhaal's bonkers performance, how Gilroy made it distinctive from your normal horror movie and whether the movie's message about the commercialism of art is conveyed as intended. An episode that asks that oft-repeated eternal question: will the Academy ever be ready for a movie where Nicole Kidman pees on Zac Efron? This installment of MULTIMEDIOCRITY: The Broadcast! finds the Two Musketeers (who, in this case, are both Porthos) discussing films they didn’t see, like CHRISTOPHER ROBIN and CRAZY RICH ASIANS, and one Doofin regrettably did, THE MEG (more like THE 'Meh'G, amirite?). He and Talley also reflect on NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, TROPIC THUNDER, and Daniel Craig's mostly solid run as James Bond, all in-between touching on topics such as STAR WARS, Billy Crystal, Florida's many shortcomings, and fanboys' selective outrage.Things get goofy, as the gents consider the lack of male nudity in American film, ponder the staying power of some pre-Internet celebrity rumors (Richard Gere inserted what?! Rod Stewart ingested what?! Marilyn Manson removed what?!), and repeatedly fall back on impressions of Tom Hardy's Bane. Will Talley ever watch INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL? Will Doofin come around on PADDINGTON? Will Matthew Conaughey’s McConaissance ever end? These questions and more go unanswered on Episode 31, heard via the State Lines Network!

Dan and James from A Gay & a Nongay join us for Episode 28 and we’re reviewing Dallas Buyers Club, Dan’s choice. This 2013 biographical drama swept up the all the acting awards for its two leads Matthew McConaughey (riding the wave of the Mcconaissance) and Jared Leto. It tells the story of cowboy asshole Ron Woodruff who gambles, sleeps with prostitutes, takes all the party drugs available, rides bulls, a wildly stereotypical Texan hustler and finds out he has AIDS after a freak accident hospital trip. After initially being in denial and being a massive homophobe he gets a change of heart and decides to set up an (illegal) Buyers Club where patients can buy into his cocktail of unlicensed and imported from Mexico drugs. Leto plays Rayon (a fictional character added into the real-life elements), a trans woman with HIV, who helps Ron get patients for his Buyers Club and give the film a much-needed warmth and sensitivity. Scores [supsystic-tables id='28'] Scoring highly on recommendability but low on repeat viewings - standard for anything either based on real life or a documentary - and surprisingly on the engagement from Kobi, overall Dallas Buyers Club scores 3.7 (so nearly a 4). On this episode THE IMITATION GAME inspires us to break the code on two older films about enigma machines. One, an Americanized action thriller set on a Nazi submarine U-571, and the other a love triangle with Kate Winslet, but without a ship, in ENIGMA. As dumb Americans, we have no hope of breaking the code, but we think we’ve cracked the McConaissance of Matthew McConaughey’s hairline.
