Along with wife Allison, the Elliotts discuss the heart and soul of their family practice on Joppa Road and why sports and community matter in Baltimore at Drug City on our 25th Anniversary Crab Cake Tour celebration. Just yesterday, the United States Census Bureau released the preliminary count from the 2020 Census, and we learned that New York State will lose one congressional seat as the result of changes in our population. It will be a few more months before we see final numbers and how they might affect the drawing of district lines but experts are already preparing for the coming work to ensure that those lines are drawn fairly. In 2014, New York voters approved a constitutional amendment establishing an independent redistricting commission that is set to take over the redistricting process beginning this year. In this second of a multi-part series on New York's redistricting process, HMM correspondent Corinne Carey spoke with Steve Elliott of the Albany County League of Women Voters. Steve talked about the politics of redistricting, efforts to reform redistricting in New York, and the LWVNYS People's Hearing on New York State Redistricting on Thursday, April 29th from 6:30 pm -8:00 pm. Listeners can find out more about the Hearing by visiting the Facebook page for the League of Women Voters of NYS.

I had Josh Elliott on the podcast today and what a fun and interesting individual to interview. I’ve been fortunate enough to join Josh on a couple of painting trips to observe his painting acumen and you can learn so much as an art dealer when you get to actually see what an artist does with their skill set in the field. It helps one understand the process and there is something to be said about comprehending the process. I'm an artist in the sense that I'm a writer and photographer, but I’m not a painter and there's a big difference watching someone like Josh paint. Josh and I talk about his early days and his evolution into the artist he has become, as well as his personal philosophy on painting from telephone poles and windmills to the rationale to omit them entirely. We go a little more in-depth about the artwork than we usually do with painters in this episode as I found his process so interesting. I’m just so intrigued by Josh's work as not only a gallery owner that represents him but as a collector of his work having upwards of 12 or so Josh Elliotts in my personal collection. I admire Josh, not only as an artist - but also as a person and after watching this podcast I think you'll understand why.

Team Ohio general manager and U18 head coach Patrick Metzger goes back into the history of the program and details its evolution from a showcase tournament team to split-season, and now a program that offers full-season AA youth teams. Sylvania Northview head coach Steve Elliott provides a common thread through the storied program, having served as a long-time assistant under Jim Cooper, and then Mike Jones, before ascending to the head coaching position in 2016. Steve reflects on some of the big games he has been a part of in Northview history, the Wildcats' trademark physical brand of hockey, and shares some thoughts on ways the game could be improved for kids in Ohio.

In addition to being a tribute artist, Steve is also an accomplished acrylic painter and water-color artist. On this episode we're going to talk about: How he got his accidental start from a comment he made at a karaoke bar about someone else's rendition of Elvis. How his upbringing created the foundation for a side hobby as an acrylic and watercolor painter. How the covid crisis has changed his life in positive ways, even with the cancellation of much of his business. But most of all, we're going to talk about the heartfelt kindness towards others which is in all of us ...if we choose to. I'm honored to have him as my first guest on Visible Kindness. Greg Giguiere, Matchbook Wines in Yolo County California, discusses farming 2,000 acres of grapes and olives on this multi-generational farm while at the same time preserving wetlands and other natural habitat for wildlife. Greg describes working with IPM methods including using owl boxes and his participation in research on owls as control for rodents. He gives specific examples of sustainable practices the vineyard uses such as cover crops, double drip systems, and compost. You’ll hear about his ideas for more holistic approaches and saving energy and water as the vineyard moves into the future, how he learns from previous generations, and how he tests his ideas – all while striving for the best quality wines. According to Greg, “A big part of farming is being connected to the land. So a lot of what we do goes to that. I’ve very interested in reducing chemical inputs into our system and moving away from a monoculture and having more biodiversity.” Talking about the barn owl project in partnership with UC Davis and Sacramento State University students, and partly funded by Western SARE, Greg has stated, “My family’s been growing wine grapes here since the 1970s, and controlling rodents is a big part of our integrated pest management program. We have 40 owl boxes on the farm.” Matchbook Wines is moving toward a holistic approach, looking at different products that build up the soils. They look at soil samples and tissue samples, while also looking at wine quality block by block. “It’s a process of leaning and realizing that there have to be some challenges and some failures.” He stresses the importance of having clear, long term goals to move toward.(photo by Steve Elliott, Western IPM Center/Western SARE)Learn more at westernsare.org/.

A Generous Life - Mt 25:31-40: In case you are feeling some “generosity fatigue” you'll be pleased to know that this will be our last weekend dedicated to this theme! But I have deeply valued and enjoyed our time reflecting on what a generous life looks like, and I trust you have as well!! I was blessed to have a wonderful breakfast with our former lead pastor, Steve Elliott, this morning and he reminded me of a quote from Simone Weil who said: “giving someone your attention is the highest form of generosity.” We talked about becoming world-class “noticers” of others a few weekends ago and we'll revisit that theme a little this weekend as we move from noticing family to noticing the most vulnerable in our world. Darren and Minako Polischuk will share a little from their Cambodian journey and together we will reflect on what it means to care for the “least of these” as we think about our legacy in life. I hope you will be able to join one of our services as we reflect one last time this year on what a generous life looks like. Spoiler alert: it's looks really beautiful and sacred. Be blessed this weekend!

The Story - Genesis 37;39;41-48; 50: Read Ch 3 of The Story I read this week, from Steve Elliott's new book Joseph - a Story About a Family that "real life calls for real Christianity". The reality is that in the real stuff of life, we find events that shape and misshape everyday life. Could God's fingerprint really be upon all the crazy circumstances of life? Is He truly sovereign and kind and worthy of our deepest trust? This weekend we are in Chapter 3 of The Story and it's time to get to know Joseph, Abraham's great grandson, a little better. In the unique events of his life, we see how God was at work and perhaps it will fuel our faith to believe that He is at work in our stories.
Steve Elliot from AgileCraft stopped by to talk about scaling Agile in a bimodal world. Bimodal IT is a concept Gartner introduced a few years ago, whereby Waterfall and Agile teams coexist in an Agile organization. But this is a scary thought for some who fear that it could take the steam out of Agile transformations that are underway. For Steve, bimodal presents an alternative for companies who want to become Agile but aren't ready yet. Bimodal can be viewed as an opportunity to break down some barriers to Agile transformation, giving executives and the business side some safety, which can help them transform faster. Steve believes that if it's clear to the company how each side is doing, "Agile will win the day faster than if we treat those two roles as silos."
