Strauss & Howe's "The Fourth Turning prophecy" (published in 1997) envisions a period of profound transformation for America, marked by a climactic crisis that reshapes society. Imagine a national—and likely global—eruption of events, spilling into channels of distress carved out during the preceding era of unraveling. These channels, widened by a triggering catalyst, guide the initial flow of upheaval, but predicting the exact trajectory is as uncertain as pinpointing the fault line of an earthquake. The molten core of this climax could bring economic chaos with financial collapse and rampant poverty, social unrest fueled by divisions and armed factions, political turmoil with institutional breakdown and authoritarian shifts, and military conflicts involving catastrophic weapons. This prophecy challenges us to consider not just the inevitability of change but also the forces shaping the future of civilization. Jim Quinn, presents four possible outcomes, each shaped by a crisis of immense magnitude. It could signify the end of humanity, an apocalyptic event triggered by a catastrophic blend of social collapse, malevolence, advanced technology, and sheer bad luck. Alternatively, it might mark the end of modernity, with Western civilization's centuries-long rhythm abruptly halting, potentially due to global conflict and societal collapse. A third scenario could see the dissolution of America itself, as the nation faces an existential crisis akin to those during the Revolution, Civil War, or World War II. Yet, there is a hopeful possibility: the Fourth Turning could simply close the current era, leading to a rebirth of America and a new societal cycle, transformed but enduring. Website Link:
Introduction to a new series on this podcast - one I've been intending to do for a while. It's called Reactivities: Tales from Interesting Times. Strauss & Howe originally called the cohort born between 1961 and 1981 the Thirteenth Generation, but the Coupland's "Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture" soon made it the preferred moniker. In Strauss & Howe's cyclical view, every fourth generation would have similar attributes, making Generation X similar (for example) to the Lost Generation born at the end of the 19th century. These generations, which were seen as responding to the changes of the Awakening, were originally called "Reactive." (Later, archetypal representations were used instead, and Gen X became a Nomad generation - although, still, I think we should be either Schemers or Scoundrels, instead.) This will be about the interesting times that such generations - and especially Generation X - lived through.

Monday, March 11, 2024 is my 83rd birthday, and coincidentally the deadline for this segment of UnMind, in order to drop on Wednesday the 13th. I did an exercise in visualizing my personal timeline this last year, and will share it with you in this installment. You will have to visit the website to see the illustrations (link), but for now, as we say in professional design circles — when a design board presentation got lost in checked baggage — “Picture this, guys!” Been there, done that.I began by laying out my life in decades, starting in 1940 when I was conceived around July, born 9 months later in 1941, and — incidentally, not coincidentally — the year that Matsuoka-roshi arrived in America. Picture a spreadsheet 10 columns across, headed 1940,1950,1960,etc. up to 2030; by 6 rows down, with categories: Geographical, Societal, Marital/Familial, Educational, Formal Zen, and Professional. You get the idea. Then fill in the blanks with locations like Centralia, IL (my home town), Chicago (where I did my advanced schooling), Atlanta, GA (my adopted home town), Europe and Japan, traveling on design and Zen business — my lifetime “ecological sweepout,” as Bucky Fuller calls it. Big events like WWII, Korea and Vietnam; the end of the Cold War; Covid, etc.; and lesser ones such as “Born 3/11/41,” 1st & 2nd Marriages, Father & Mother dying; BS & MS degrees, etc., populate the cells. Plus Zen turning points such as meeting Matsuoka-roshi, Lay Ordination, ASZC & STO Incorporation, publish date of my first major book, “The Original Frontier”; and finally, career benchmarks such as teaching at U of I & the School of the Art Institute, various corporate ventures, and my current art dealer, Kai Lin Art Gallery, complete the exercise to date. I recommend you try something similar, to get an overview of your life. By the way, that expression, “conceived,” is interesting from a professional design perspective. We have what we call “concept design,” the initial stage of ideation, wherein few to none of the details of a design solution to a problem have been worked out. The spit-balling, brainstorming phase. Which seems to apply pretty aptly to that embryo in the womb — an inchoate mass of tissue that will, some nine months hence, come popping out into the world — if not “fully-formed,” as Buddha, in his miraculous birth, was said to have been. Not only that, but he immediately took seven steps in each of the cardinal directions; and, pointing one forefinger to the heavens above, the other to the earth below, declared: “Above the heavens and below the heavens, I alone am the most honored one!” If, indeed, this story is true, then, indeed, he would have had to have been. Or at least one of the most highly-honored ones. But of course, we take this tale with a huge grain of salt, perhaps even a saltlick block, like we used to put out in the pasture for our horses, on the farm where I grew up. My only claim to fame regarding an unusual birth came to light when my mother later confessed that she had tried to abort me by jumping off the back porch, which was what passed for birth control in those days, today referred to as “reproductive health.” Mom and dad already had “a boy for you and a girl for me,” in the persons of my older brother and sister — one darkly handsome, the other blond and beautiful, respectively — and the budget from the newspaper route they ran was already strained. I got my revenge by being born with an enormous head, which, because I was upside-down in the womb, I attribute to all that jumping. For some reason, my life seems to have morphed through the various “times-of-life” cycles — used to sort demographics in social research — in near synchronicity with the decades, as measured by an admittedly arbitrary calendar, called the Gregorian, which, according to the wizards of Wikipedia: The Gregorian calendar is the calendar used in most parts of the world. It went into effect in October 1582 following the papal bull Inter gravissimas issued by Pope Gregory XIII, which introduced it as a modification of, and replacement for, the Julian calendar. The principal change was to space leap years differently so as to make the average calendar year 365.2425 days long, more closely approximating the 365.2422-day 'tropical' or 'solar' year that is determined by the Earth's revolution around the Sun. Glad we got that cleared up. Now, we can see clearly the absolute degree of arbitrariness inherent in our concept of measured time. We can't even measure the time of day, the calendar year, or the planet's revolution around the sun, without resorting to infinitely endless decimal places. So much better than that antiquated Julian thing, though. And, “close enough for jazz,” to most intents and purposes. As you can see by looking at the first chart, my geographical sweepout was rather limited to my home state of Illinois in my 20s, other than a couple of junkets to California, until I moved to Atlanta in my 30s, then finally went abroad on business in my 40s, and to the Far East in my 50s, on behalf of Zen. My family did not have the kind of resources that would have financed a “grand tour” of Europe in my formative years. This charting of your life on a single sheet of paper turns out to be an exercise in humility, when you realize how little you have done, and how brief your lifespan really is. We will return to this subject in the context of the “lifespan chapter” of the Lotus Sutra. In the second spreadsheet, I extend the timescale to 80-year spans — extending back to 1460, and forward through 1540, 1620, 1700, etc., and finally my own era of 1940 through 2020 — shrinking my personal timeline down to two columns out of ten, roughly 20% of the larger span of five centuries or so. Visualizing only one row, encompassing the societal level, a distinct pattern emerges: major events, especially in the USA, seem to happen in 80-year cycles, going back to the Revolutionary War and Civil War and including World War II, which was just heating up when I came on the scene. Sure enough, when I Googled it, I found that this pattern of 80-year cycles is a known phenomenon, sometimes referred to as the “Strauss-Howe” theory, derived from critical events in the history of America, as well as the rest of the globe. The Strauss-Howe generation theory describes a recurrent cycle of same-aged groups with specific behavior patterns that change every 20 years. According to this theory, an 80-year cycle is crucial, when every four generations is associated to a crisis that impacts the ongoing social order and creates a new one. A startling personal finding popped out like a sore thumb: at 80 years old, I was 1/3 the age of my native country, the good old USA. A person 80 years old at my birth would have been born around 1860, the Civil War; one 80 years old at that time would have been born around 1780, the time of the Revolution. The reference to Armageddon in the final column, finally coming to pass within 80 years from now, is only partially, and hopefully, tongue-in-cheek. Expanding the timescale even further, the third spreadsheet encompasses twenty-five centuries since the advent of Buddha in 500 BCE, to the current 2000's, again shrinking my personal tenure to a vanishingly small portion, less than ten percent of the total, if I live to be 100. Which is unlikely. Although, as Matsuoka-roshi would often say, “Zen keeps the men younger, and the women more beautiful.” I can't really explain my relatively good health and wellbeing in any other way. To close this segment, let us consider some of the statements attributed to Buddha at the end of his life, in the Lifespan Chapter of the Lotus Sutra, ostensibly uttered as he was about to enter Pari Nirvana: To the deluded and unenlightened I say that I have entered nirvana although in fact I am really here. For the sake of these sentient beings I teach that the lifespan of the Buddha is immeasurable. The light of my wisdom illuminates immeasurably and my lifespan is of innumerable kalpas. This has been achieved through long practice. You wise ones do not give in to doubt! Banish all doubt forever! The Buddha's words are true never false. Here, we find one of the most controversial of all claims in Buddhism, which begs credulity — similar to the resurrection of Jesus — along with that of his virgin birth. Even the idea of Pari Nirvana smacks of “woo-woo,” given our skeptical scientific setting: In Buddhism, parinirvana is commonly used to refer to nirvana-after-death, which occurs upon the death of someone who has attained nirvana during their lifetime. It implies a release from Saṃsāra, karma and rebirth as well as the dissolution of the skandhas. Bows to our fellow travelers at Wikipedia, once again. But while we can readily embrace the dissolution of the skandhas — or aggregated form, sensation, perception, intention and consciousness, upon the onset of death, it seems mere speculation that anyone might find total release from the ocean of Samsara, the cycles of karmic consequence and rebirth, that Buddhism teaches as theories of the laws governing sentient existence. But Buddha seems to be pointing at something else, a kind of permanent existence that is not limited to the form of our present, impermanent body-mind. Like the timeworn analogy of the ocean and the waves, the eternal lifespan of Buddha implies that whatever is here has always been here, and will always be here, if in different form. A wave returns to the ocean, but does not, cannot, drown; being of one and the same substance. I will leave it to you, as usual, to “thoroughly examine this in practice,” as Master Dogen kindly advises. This is not a cop-out. If reality could be explained in words, it would have become commonplace knowledge long before 2500 years ago. The original language of our original mind is still in place. All we have to do is develop “the eyes to hear and the ears to see” it. The method for developing this transcendent, trans-perceptual wisdom is stunningly simple: just sit still enough — and straight enough — for long enough. And listen up — to the “sermon of no words.” * * * Elliston Roshi is guiding teacher of the Atlanta Soto Zen Center and abbot of the Silent Thunder Order. I was thinking of this one for Christmas, but it was originally done for Easter. Still, I think it's held up well. -------------------------------------------------------- Whenever someone asks whether the generational model works outside of modern English-speaking country, one fun example is to look at Rome and Judea in the first century A.D., from the assassination of Julius Caesar to the crucifixion of Jesus to Vespasian taking control of Judea and, then, of Rome. Most of my research here was using Wikipedia. Here are a few of the relevant articles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiberius https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caligula https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudius https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Beth_Horon_(66) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_of_the_Four_Emperors The criteria I give for identifying the different turnings are my interpretation of Strauss & Howe theory. My Second and Third Turning criteria were previously discussed here: http://crisis.generationalize.com/2014/03/second.html http://crisis.generationalize.com/2014/03/third.html My blog "Welcome to the Crisis" is at http://crisis.generationalize.com Twitter: @generationalize
On this week's episode, Jim sits down with Neil Howe, author, historian, and one half of the team, along with Bill Strauss, behind the Strauss-Howe generational theory initially explored in their books Generations and The Fourth Turning. As the title of his new book suggests, The Fourth Turning is Here. We thought, what better time to have Neil on the show? The subtitle of his new book is “What the Seasons of History Tell Us About How and When This Crisis Will End.” Give the episode a listen, and, as always, let us know what you think.

Different generations love to cast aspersions on each other. Boomers think Millennials and Gen Zers are fragile narcissists. Those younger generations think that Boomers are selfish, closed-minded pinheads who helped themselves to economic success and then pulled the ladder out for everyone else. But are these and other generational stereotypes true? Here to unpack that question for us is Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology and the author of Generations: The Real Differences between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents—and What They Mean for America's Future. We begin our conversation with some background on the study of generations and why Jean thinks the Strauss-Howe theory of generational cycles has been disrupted. We then work our way through the generations, from the Silent Generation to the present, and talk about the characteristics and particular challenges of each cohort. We dig into the myths and truths of the generations, such as whether Boomers are doing financially well and Millennials are doing financially poorly. We talk about why Gen X gets overlooked, why there's such a sharp break between Millennials and Gen Z, why Gen Zers are taking longer to get their drivers' licenses and feel darkly pessimistic, and much more.Resources Related to the Podcast AoM article on the Strauss-Howe generational cycle theoryAoM Podcast #236: What the Generational Cycle Theory Can Tell Us About Our Present Age (With Neil Howe)AoM Article: A New Generation of Prigs, Prudes, and SquaresAoM Article: How Millennials Could Be the Next Greatest Generation of Personal FinanceAoM Podcast: #751: The Rise of the Religious “Nones” (And What It Means for Society)Atlantic article by Jean: “The Myth of the Broke Millennial” Connect With Jean TwengeJean's website
Hello everyone. This is an audio version of the essay I wrote for the History Impossible Substack (as well as here!) called "The Fiction(s) of History." In this special episode, I take a dive into the dueling narratives of historical progress (what my friend CJ Killmer of the Dangerous History Podcast calls the teleological approach to history; yes, he's much smarter than me) and historical cycles of the Strauss-Howe and Turchin-Nefedov variety. It's not all philosophy, despite the subject matter, and it does indeed touch upon some historical topics that I do intend to cover in more detail one day, as well as some that have been covered in other, superior work, like Darryl Cooper's MartyrMade. The question of progress or cycles isn't left hanging open either, though by no means am I telling anyone to think a certain way; this is more an exploration of my own interpretations of how history, in essence, "works." It's my hope that this helps illustrate my approach and perspective when tackling subjects--especially controversial ones--on History Impossible. It may also serve as a launching pad for future explorations into more conceptual areas that fit neatly into the History Impossible niche. Overall, though, I hope to add a little insight into this space I occupy.Thank you again to all who support and appreciate the show.History Impossible has been made possible by the following generous supporters on Patreon, Substack, and PayPal. What if we actually are in the middle of the 4th turning, things will get worse before they get better, but once they do we will be back into a 1st turning period. What if the High Times period come around again very soon? While this may sound optimistic, I worry this may be sobering news for independent thinkers like us. According to the theory, the 1st turning is characterized by a time of strong institutions and conformity. People who try to stand out do not do well during this period. As the Russia-Ukraine crisis breaks out, I think we are getting a glimpse of what the 1st turning of the next cycle might be like. American institutions and individuals are reacting by punishing Russian icitizens not being able to differentiate between the Russian people and the oligarchs ruling them. The international financial sanctions has crippled Russia's economy, which does more damage to the regular, middle class Russian much omore than it hurts their elites. People in Russia are unable to go about their daily lives because of the banking sanctions and that many Western companies voluntarily stopped selling products in Russia. AMD and Intel will no longer sell hcips in Russia. Boeing will no longer service airplanes. Nike will not sell shoes. I believe this move will spectacularly backfire on the West because they just cut off all their means of projecting soft power through our greatest ally n this crisis - the Russian population. I believe all this will do is separate the world into a West led by the United States and a Russia/China alliance in the East. A new cold war era begins.I worry that censorship will accelerate in hthissnew period because dissenting opinions will be treated as a matter of national security. It will be McCarthyism 2.0 on a scale that couldn't have been imagined in the 1950s. On Reddit, the r/Russia subreddit was quarantined this week. It is now socially dangerous to express the opinion that the Ukraine invasion may have been triggered by NATO's aggressive overexpansion toward the East over the last 15 years. I worry that we are entering a time where expressing sympathy for Russians and their points of view will be taboo. Russians are being dehumanized for an act of the dictatorship ruling them. The West is steps away from redoing its mistakes of the past, such as the internment camps they put innocent Japanese nationals in during World War 2, only this time it will be Russians. The 4th turning will be a rough time, but I worry the 1st turning will be even worse for free thinkers. What if the 1st turning will be a woke dystopia? In our last cycle, societal norms were driven by the conversative values of organized religion. This upcoming cycle will be driven by messages promoted by the media elites under the guise of wartime necessity. The current court of public opinion reminds me all too much of the "weapons of mass destruction" bandwangon, freedom fries, and racism towards Middle Eastern people in the early 2000s. I don't think the average person is able to wake up because people keep getting fooled by the same propaganda, just presented under a different emergency. If we have to take ideas like MGTOW underground, what will that life be like for people like us? How will we spread our messages and connect with like minded individuals in that kind of environment? A high level summary of the Plan for our history map 1. Use specific historical events as our landmarks 2. Focus on the year to help define when the event occurred 3. Structure within the Strauss & Howe model, particularly looking at events associated with a specific turning.
Wikipedia describes the social generations as the contemporary characterization of cohorts used in media and advertising borrows, in part, from the Strauss–Howe generational theory and generally follows the logic of the pulse-rate hypothesis. They start at the Lost Generation (those born between 1883-1900), and end with Generation Alpha (those born between the early 2010's-2020's). We explore these generations to help us understand each other and maybe find common ground. Hosted by myself Kat (GenX), Emmy (Millennial) and new special guest Lyn (GenZ) Music by The Dirty Feathers

The first clip starts with the present, life here in Japan during COVID-19, the moronic response to COVID before broadening out to a discussion of the author Daniel Pinchbeck and his question: did 2012 happen? I then speak about the many cycles of time, using astrology and secular understanding such as Strauss/Howe's generational theory and how using both we could say that our current 80-year cycle has us in late winter and then I speak some about the astrological cycles of next several years, how the short-term forecast is very intense. And finally, I talk briefly about the Jupiter/Saturn cycle and I ponder how we can prepare for spring. In the second clip, I speak about the upcoming year of 2022, a year of disillusionment, grace, delusion, miracles, overdoses, death, power being exposed and possible redemption. I base much of this talk on the astrological cycles of 2022 and I bore down a bit on the details, offering a few specific predictions. I base these thoughts on listening to/watching/reading probably 20 hours of astrology media, several other forecasts from a more secular perspective, and my own understanding of current events. And at the end, I offer a few suggestions on how to personally navigate what I expect is going to be an intense ride but I'll reward those of you who read these intros the key word: Simplify! In 1972, the number of Americans who described themselves as religiously unaffiliated was 5%. In 2018, it was almost 24%. Why has the number of people answering "none of the above" to the question of their religious affiliation jumped so dramatically in recent years, and what effect will the growth of these so-called "nones" have on society in general? My guest explores these questions in his book The Nones: Where They Came From, Who They Are, and Where They Are Going. His name is Ryan Burge and he's both a pastor and a professor of political science. In our conversation today, Ryan shares the data on which religions have risen and fallen, and explains why mainline Protestantism has taken a huge dive and why the number of people who have disaffiliated altogether from religion has grown to rival the number of evangelicals and Catholics in this country. We talk about the role that politics has played in these shifts, and the fact that while people once chose their politics based on their religion, they now choose their religion based on their politics. Ryan unpacks the demographic profile of the average none, breaking it down into the category's three subgroups: atheists, agnostics, and those who label themselves as "nothing in particular." We end our conversation with what the future growth of the nones may look like, the possible societal effects of an overall decline in religiosity, and whether younger generations may swing back to being more religious. The Homeland generation was born starting in 2005 - but what does it mean? Why Homeland? And are they really quite what Strauss & Howe predicted they would be? It does seem about right. That tweet I mentioned is here: https://twitter.com/generationalize/status/1432384151143944197?s=20 There's no separate Wikipedia entry for The Rocket Man, and in fact my copy is in R is For Rocket, but Wikipedia says it was first published in The Illustrated Man https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Illustrated_Man http://afterthemillennials.com/its-official-the-white-house-calls-them-homeland-generation/ Couldn't find a way to include this but: The Rocket Man is set in, well, right about now, since the titular character was “a boy in 1997” and the narrator is mentioned as being fourteen years old, so it'd be quite reasonable to think that he was born about ten years after the father was a boy, and …yeah. It's not a tumultuous world, so would seem to be after a Crisis like we have now. Also, the story is only 10 pages long. It fits a lot in there.
Chief joins the show to talk about the Strauss-Howe generational theory. We get into how alot of the topics we've been covering kind of adds up to this, how it all lays out, examples of how the theory has been correct in our history, and more.
Here are in this episode, Marcus Monero shares details on the new developments on the FINfluential as well as a new video podcast coming up soon. He also covers some interesting aspects of the 4th turning and brings up interesting points about the lifecycle's of humanity. Let's dive in deep to learn more from this amazing book, written in 1997 by William Strauss and Neil Howe called "The 4th Turning". According to the book there are 4 turnings in the lifecycle of every human. 1. The High 2. The Awakening 3. The Unraveling 4. The Crisis Each of us are born during one of these "Turnings" and, assuming we live a full life, will experience each of them. When you are born has a lot to do with how you see the world. Most of my readers belong to either Generation X (born 1961 - 1981) or the Millennial generation (1981 - 2004). We are children of the 3rd turning. The time of unraveling. In the 3rd turning, institutions are weak and distrusted. Individualism is strong and flourishing. It was the Gordon Gekko era of "Greed is good." A time when Maverick took to the skies as the rebellious young fighter pilot, broke all the rules, defied authority, and somehow came out on top. Strauss-Howe refer to those of us in the X generation as "Nomads" and those born to the Millennial Generation as "Heroes" Click on the play button to listen to more on the above conversation and enjoy. ********************************************************************************************************************************************* Learn more about the FINfluential, click here and if you would like to learn about myself, click here at www.markose.me. Welcome to Finance and Fury, the Furious Friday edition. Last week we went through the Fed Theory and disconnect theories. Today I want to look at an overlapping theory to this on what is happening in society as well. I just finished an interesting book called the fourth turning and I wanted to share some insights into this. So much of what is happening in the world is built around politics – politics and the economy – but it is nothing new - the economy is us and our interactions with one another in commerce – and is a complex system – but at the moment there is a lot of conflict – and the tendency to try and control a complex system Politics – whilst most people vote – especially in Australia where it is compulsory – we have little to no say in the policies being implemented – But even less so when it comes to Central banks and the monetary system – none of us get a say in how Monetary policy is conducted – get some say as far as voting for people who promise some fiscal policy – but when they are in anything goes However – the entire central banking community is a controlled financial system by bureaucrats who are unelected and unaccountable – when they make poor decisions – no consequences I would say that they have more power over our daily lives than politicians – they aim to control and direct individuals’ consumption and production behaviours – all done normally from meeting 11 times a year When you stop to think about it – this system doesn’t seem that natural – unlike a cycle of growing old Are things unravelling or just unfolding on a normal cycle? And how do central banks and Governments fit in? Brings in the concept of the Fourth turning – by authors Strauss and Howe - Similar to K Wave theory – there are Cycles – and turnings within a cycle - each turning as lasting about 20–22 years – and four turnings make up a full cycle of about 80 to 90 years – essentially the average life expectancy Generational change drives the cycle of turnings and determines its periodicity – or the tendency for patterns to recur at intervals – so every 20 or so years you have one turning – like the four seasons – then like a year – you have a full cycles – but in this case every 80-90 years As each generation ages into the next life phase and with it comes a new social role that they fill – Go from children, to young adults, to mature adults, to retirees – within the economy and society each will likely serve different functions – even in planning that I do for clients – see different stages of life and individuals have different goals – buying first home to retiring and drawing upon accumulated assets With this - society's mood and behaviour fundamentally changes – which gives rise to a new turning and inevitably – a new cycle In this book – they point out that there has been symbiotic relationship between historical events and generational personas - Historical events shape generations in childhood or young adulthood - then, as parents and leaders in midlife and old age - these generations in turn affect history Different generations have different lives – have different lessons from different environments - But these differences follow patterns – different generations followed by other kinds of generations Each of which is Shaped by location and their time and place in history and what is happening around them – implies a pattern through history – Does play out in different forms in each turning – as the time and place in history has always looked different – the 30s looked different today from population size, technology and economic factors - but they have similar patterns – as these patterns date back to the 1500s – which looked vastly different to the 1900s where electricity – probably a bigger technology shift compared to the internet occurred – but the relative changes of the ups and downs within society and the economy – i.e. each turning follow similar patterns – then there tend to be regime changes for dominance – rise and collapse periods moving in 80-year cycles Each generational Mood is important – at one extreme is the Awakening and at the other is the Crisis The Awakening – this is compared to summer and Crisis compared to winter The other two turnings in between are transitional seasons – where you have the High and the Unravelling High is similar to spring and the unravelling is similar to autumn In this book they went through 26 theorized turnings over 7 cycles - from the year 1435 through today To go into further detail on each of these – High - the First Turning - occurs right after a Crisis During this period - Society is confident about where it wants to go – there is high confidence in the future and most people are on the same page – in the book - the most recent First Turning was the post–World War II around 1946 and ending around the early 1960’s -in the US coincided with the assassination of John F. Kennedy Awakening - Second Turning - era when institutions are attacked in the name of personal and spiritual autonomy – this is normally around the same time as when society is just reaching its high tide of public progress people suddenly tire of social discipline and want to recapture a sense of "self-awareness", "rise of activism" most recent Awakening was the “Consciousness Revolution,” which spanned from the campus and inner-city revolts of the mid-1960s to the tax revolts of the early 1980s – the Anti-war movements and the rise of the hippie/lsd culture Unravelling - Third Turning - mood of this era in many ways the opposite of a High: Institutions are weak and distrusted, while individualism is strong and flourishing - when society wants to come together and build and avoid the destruction of the previous crisis – this period comes after Awakenings as society wants to atomize and enjoy the continued high most recent Unravelling began in the 1980s and includes the Long Boom and Culture Wars – In Aus saw this back in 1996-2007 as a focal point – elements of the unravelling does still lap into the crisis period – such as the cancel culture now present Crisis - Fourth Turning - era of destruction - often involving war, revolution or a financial collapse institutional life is destroyed and rebuilt over time in response to a perceived threat to the nation's survival After the crisis, civic authority revives, cultural expression redirects towards community purpose, and people begin to locate themselves as members of a larger group Last Fourth Turning began with the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and climaxed with the end of World War II But at the core - At the heart of Strauss & Howe's ideas is a basic alternation between two different types of eras, Crises and Awakenings Have the Awakening and unravelling in-between – but through each cycle – there are defining eras in which people observe that historic events are radically altering their social environment Crises are periods marked by major secular upheaval, when society focuses on reorganizing the outer world of institutions and public behaviour – like today with the bottom up social enforcement we are seeing going on – where people at the bottom are begging for fines and prison sentences to be enforced on those not following the governments rules – where you have social conformity through social shame - they say the last Crisis period was spanning from the Great Depression and WW2 – saw similar events play out – thankfully not as extreme back then – However – with each turning and cycle - we are left with is greater institutional controls - During Crises, great peril provokes a societal consensus, where an ethic of individuality gets destroyed to confirm with the social norms and strong institutional order – what the Government says you will do – and then the people police themselves – bottom up – been seen through history many times Time is the differential as to why this isn’t an obvious point – if you take a year with seasons – we have all lives through a year worth of seasons – but doubt anyone listening to this would have lived through a full turning – why I like talking to grand parents – When you look at history – things rise and fall – but some things stay around – over the past number of turnings – what has stayed around and enshrined themselves have been central banks – used each turning to cement more control These entities Want of control cycles – shows a massive level of hubris – this is evident at the moment – The idea that Governments and Central banks can control cycles is emerging – even the utopian theories of MMT are coming into the main stream – however the more they squeeze the worst it can often make it – you cant fight the tide They are Trying to control a naturally occurring cycle that is build on the hopes and dreams of those in the business cycle and the economy The nature of hubris – means that your very overconfidence in doing an act will lead to something else going wrong – why I have the position that legislation that intends to do good ends up going bad – too many orders of effects 2008 may have been the start of the fourth turning – but it went largely unrecognised due to Central Banking and Governmental interventions – Between 2008 and now and when compared to the 1930s – seeing the emergence of similar scenarios – Fears of deflation – haven’t seen since the 30s – the emergence of new threats – such as competitive devaluation – beggar thy neighbour policies – destruction in global trade – rising gap between rich and poor and the fears of future living standards 2020 might be the year that the transition starts to become obvious - The combination of financial and economic crisis – the breaking up of civil society through the fragmentation of individual ideology – even a de facto major power play between the US and China This being said – we are the richest society ever known – even with a major collapse – still be the richest – even compared to 1930 standards – if The fourth turning started around the GFC – each lasts 20-30 years – so likely until 2030 that things are rocky for However - Central banks do extenuate cycles– inserting a body into the natural cycle to try and manage that to soften downturns – Started really involving themselves in the early 1900s - but we have been through many downturns since then – every time – even with intervention – through the overarching structure there was this idea cemented that this body is needed – even though they can’t prevent downturns – they have been there to try to soak up the mess – however given what they have done and the damage that they have created to the economy – they technically have forced their will on a world that wasn’t ready – happens in cycles – as the unravelling starts to occur – institutions want to gain more power and become more draconian We Never had a cleansing process after the GFC – or even now – what goes up must come down – and similar to seasons – downturns are actually needed - like winter – winters kills a lot of vegetation off so new things can grow and give the environment a break – just as forests need fires, rivers need floods – society and the economy needs events that clean out the debris – or sclerotic parts of the economy – those entities that no longer functions – a changing of the guard if you will from the old to the young – it is the price that must be paid for a new golden age – however – the political and monetary powers who are in current control are fighting against this – but it doesn’t mean that they will succeed in avoiding a downturn – it is the nature of hubris that they can delay but not avoid – as one so called solution can create 100 other potential problems – This being said – the 4th turnings are not meant to be apocalyptic – They shouldn’t be seen in this way – they are actually necessary – but the longer that they are delayed or artificially propped up – the worse the downfall is From a peak to bottom sense – there is naturally a bottom to a decline – but say markets dropped form 6,000 points to 4,000 points – large drop – but not as large as a drop from 8,000 to 4,000 – end up in the same place – but one was artificially created and hence the drop is larger But if you have all your wealth in the system you don’t want this to occur - Hence why markets are being propped up – the old guard (older generations) are in power are in investments like shares and property and don’t want it going down – politicians have investment properties – have large allocation to shares – have their own interests but have massive levels of pull to try to avoid downturns – they are on the shore lines with buckets trying to keep from the tide from going out All of the individual social events going on act as great distractions – cant beat the fact that society and Markets move in cycles – due to us being humans Markets are driven by humans – no humans, no markets – so markets can change in relation to society and humanity as well – as I said earlier – most people listening including myself would never have lived through a full turning You have New wave of investors coming into the market – changing how markets operate – you have central banks getting additional access and scope to markets – also changing how they operate A sign of this is when tracking this to the economy – take the confidence indicators – for individuals and business Take the confidence intervals today minus 6 months ago – If you think that today is better than the future – tends to indicate end of the cycle before another turning If you think that tomorrow will be better than today – the new cycle has generally started and things are likely to improve Important point to remember - Things will get better – in time – we are just in a cycle of time – I wouldn’t say that this is all perfectly predicted – but it is observations on what has happened through time – what must go up must come down, what is young must grow old – boiling water comes back to room temp when not heated - it is the nature of things Cycle of human nature – more confidence and more spending – more positive feedbacks – Use this as an opportunity – to Learn from it and grow from it However – remember the factor overarching cycles of institutional powers – the more power they have the longer they can delay the downturn of market cycles – But not forever – eventually society catches back up – so time will tell what the ultimate outcome will be The fed theory may prevail for the foreseeable future – or – something else in the turning to a new cycle may replace it – either way – we are still going to be one of the richest societies ever known – it is all about choices that you make – If you are reliant on the powers that be – may be a different story – but the more self sufficient that you become – the more you move above the cycle and out of it – next week ill talk about the 8 forms of capital to help expand on this concept Thank you for listening to today's episode. Bill Maher perfectly describes the awful situation Democrats are currently facing. We introduce the Strauss-Howe generational theory to consider whether America is on the verge of entering a period of crisis. Is political nihilism becoming more accepted? Does policy even matter? Or, is it just about regaining power? Mr. Henry asks conservatives the following question: Is it time that we demand men to start acting like men again? And, today’s theme continues with Recode Knoxville. The people of Knoxville are not being represented by their city council members. They are being dictated to.
Neil Howe is the historian and demographer who coined the term "millennial." He also developed the Strauss-Howe generational theory — the idea that America has four types of generations which go through cycles of history together. He joins Heaton to explain a different way to look at history and to pinpoint where we are in it.

Steve Bannon is Donald Trump's favorite philosopher. Trump sometimes jokes that he doesn't know “whether Bannon is alt-right or alt-left,” but either way Bannon has given voice to the visceral impulse of populist nationalism that Donald Trump has expressed for decades. So what does Bannon believe? A pillar of his worldview is contained in a school of history called Strauss-Howe generational theory, developed by William Strauss and Neil Howe, which states that human events can be loosely organized in terms of recurring eighty year cycles, or saecula, which unfold in four twenty year turnings.
Brought to you in part by http://xdi.com http://cunfl.com This is an era in which America's institutional life is torn down and rebuilt from the ground up—always in response to a perceived threat to the nation's very survival. Civic authority revives, cultural expression finds a community purpose, and people begin to locate themselves as members of a larger group. In every instance, Fourth Turnings have eventually become new “founding moments” in America's history, refreshing and redefining the national identity. America's most recent Fourth Turning began with the stock market crash of 1929 and climaxed with World War II. The generation that came of age during this Fourth Turning was the Hero archetype G.I. Generation (born 1901 to 1924), whose collective spirit and can-do optimism epitomized the mood of the era. Today's Hero archetype youth, the Millennial Generation (born 1982 to 2004) show many traits similar to those of the G.I. youth, including rising civic engagement, improving behavior, and collective confidence.
In the 1990s, Howe, along with co-author William Strauss, published two books, Generations and The Fourth Turning, which set out a bold and fascinating theory: that history can be broken down into 4 phases, and 4 generational archetypes that repeat themselves over and over every 80 or so years. What are the characteristics of the generational archetype you belong to? What historical phase are we in now, and what does the Strauss-Howe theory predict is likely to happen to the geo-political and economic landscape in the next decade?
Brought to you by http://xdi.com Several years ago Dr. Troy Hall introduced me to something called the Strauss-Howe Generational theory. The Strauss–Howe generational theory, created by authors William Strauss and Neil Howe, identifies a recurring generational cycle in American history. People in a particular age group tend to share a distinct set of beliefs, attitudes, values and behaviors because they all grow up and come of age during a particular period in history. However, at the end of 4 Generations, there is a reset. In our political and economic culture, the sense of time and tension I believe can be attributed to the fact that we are living through one of these turnings. Join us as we talk about genearational theory and the unflinching belief that History Is....you can change with it or get changed by it.
