What if your biggest obstacle to success is actually your hesitation? This week, we dive into a masterclass in sales and leadership mindset with Ben Gay III — a living legend in professional selling, author of the classic The Closers series, and a keynote trainer whose lessons have shaped sales for decades.Ben kicks off by reminding us that people buy from those they know, like, trust, and feel safe with — an essential foundation for any leader selling their vision or product. He stresses the importance of choosing the right product — one that is quality and competitively priced — before mastering the sales process itself.Sharing a candid story, Ben recalls selling the notoriously awful Yugo car, and how the key to better sales was simply selling a better product to qualified buyers. He advocates studying and mimicking the best ethical salespeople to accelerate your own success, noting how much happens in the crucial first 15 seconds of a sales pitch.Ben champions using scripting — not robotic recitations but consistent messaging fine-tuned for impact — and cites his own journey involving The Closers series, which went from a rough manuscript to selling over 10 million copies. He debunks common sales myths, calling it the “red raw meat” of selling, demanding both technique and natural fluency. On storytelling, Ben highlights specificity and believability as keys to connecting, noting his father's memorable buffalo stampede tale as an example of engaging narrative that makes complex ideas relatable and memorable. He also touches on classic sales communication techniques like “Feel, Felt, Found” for empathetic influence.Beyond sales, Ben shares his privileged mentorship with Napoleon Hill — author of Think and Grow Rich — whose legendary lessons on decisive action (“Stop dithering. Take action.”) Ben cites as guiding principles. Hill's work, Ben notes, is one of the bestselling yet least-read books, underscoring the challenge of turning knowledge into practice.Overall, this episode is a treasure trove for emerging leaders and entrepreneurs who want to own their selling process, turn ideas into action, and build authentic connections that close deals.Resources Mentioned:   Ben Gay III's The Closers book series — available at ronzonebooks.com   Lifetime unconditional guarantee on The Closers via ronzonebooks.com   Ben Gay III's iconic sales stories and mentorship experiences

Kat speaks with serial entrepreneur, public speaker, mentor and podcaster Stephanie Melodia. In this candid discussion, they discuss the mounting pressures business owners face, especially those in the UK, and how to tackle them. Including when to commit, when to pivot, and when to gracefully quit rather than simply delaying the inevitable. Stephanie shares the critical decision-making strategies used by top founders to eliminate anxiety and indecisiveness, iterate and stay ahead of the curve. Alongside the other positive habits that are behind most people´s success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience and adaptability are essential qualities for entrepreneurs. They don´t just keep you going through tough times, they also help you to know when to persevere and when it's time to embrace change. The decision to pivot, scale back, or even close a business is not a failure; it can be a strategic and courageous act that opens the door to new opportunities and personal growth. Positive habits, e.g. Daily movement, prioritising sleep, and practicing gratitude are the foundation for building and maintaining energy, clarity, and well-being. These positive habits empower you to meet your toughest challenges. Stop viewing saying no as a negative thing to do. Remember, when you say no, you are creating space to say yes to one of any number of other opportunities. Learn to make decisions quickly and move on. Dithering about all of those small things just zaps your energy. Trust yourself. BEST MOMENTS "I am allergic to inertia. I need movement. I need speed. I need scale. I need to feel like things are moving." "We keep emphasising the importance of pivots, of iterating." "You need the resilience, and you need to keep going, but you need to know the difference between, are you flogging a dead horse, or is there something here?" ABOUT THE GUEST Stephanie is a former marketing consultancy CEO turned founder coach, growth strategist, MBA advisor, and host of the UK's Top 20 Business Show. She is ranked as one of the UK's Most Influential Female Founders. With expertise in entrepreneurship and a passion for feminism, Stephanie now hosts the UK Top 20 Business Show; advises MBA students in Entrepreneurship, and; continues to serve as VC scout for an early-stage venture capital firm. Trusted by global brands like Soho House, WeTransfer, Harvey Nash Group, and international conferences like Web Summit, TechBBQ, and Women in Tech, Stephanie brings a special kind of energy to her bold keynotes and dynamic workshops. https://www.instagram.com/stephmelodia/ Stephanie's podcast with Kat ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting, working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life' price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. This week on Energy Voice Out Loud, we discuss Beam and its administration, the NSTA's stance on delayed decommissioning, and how mergers and acquisitions are shaking up UK oil and gas production. First up, renewables reporter Michael Behr has been looking into the Aberdeen ROV company that burst onto the scene with a pocket full of cash and ended up spending more than it had. Michael has found some sizable bills that Beam has left unpaid, and its workers are also owed thousands. To get a full rundown, read Michael's article on Energy Voice. Next up, Aberdeen features lead Ryan Duff spoke with Pauline Innes, the North Sea Transition Authority's (NSTA) director of supply chain and decommissioning. This chat came hot off the heels of the NSTA's latest decommissioning cost and performance update, which found that costs for decommissioning are spiking as plugging and abandonment is left by the wayside. Finally, merger mania and how it's impacting hydrocarbon production in the North Sea. News editor Erikka Askeland and Ryan discuss how recent mergers and acquisitions are shaking up the league table of UK producers and what the table will look like as big players downgrade their stake in the basin.

In this episode, we explore the intricate mathematics behind Sp0tify's (ok... and other's) shuffle feature, revealing how it is designed to feel random while actually being carefully curated. We discuss the psychological implications of randomness, the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm, and how engineers have created a system that respects human perception of randomness. The conversation delves into the philosophical aspects of curated randomness and the broader implications of mathematical principles in technology and human experience.Takeaways The shuffle feature is not truly random. Humans struggle to recognize true randomness due to cognitive biases. The Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm is a standard for randomization. Uses psychological techniques to enhance user satisfaction with shuffle. Dithering is a method used to create a perception of randomness. Shuffle feature analyzes multiple dimensions to optimize song selection. The algorithm incorporates noise to maintain unpredictability. Curated randomness is prevalent in various technologies beyond music. Humans prefer sequences with fewer clusters to feel more random. This is a new episode from our Think&Drink series in collaboration with the Georg-Simmel-Centre for Urban Studies and the Humboldt University Berlin. Co-operative urban development is the buzzword of the moment. It stands for the pursuit of a fairer city that is orientated towards the common good. In new partnerships - public-civic partnerships - actors from politics and administration work together with actors from civil society. Contradictory practices of urban design lead to misunderstandings, controversies and uncertainties in these co-operations. In this book, the authors explore the processes of two extraordinary experiments in cooperative urban development in Berlin: the Haus der Statistik and the Rathausblock Kreuzberg. To this end, they invite the actors involved to procrastinate. When hesitation becomes a method, ambivalences support cooperation, uncertainties replace conflicts and controversies between the partners become visible. The book presents concise theses on cooperative urban development, a glossary of misunderstandings and methodological reflections on the artistic-ethnographic research method and its embedding in urban anthropological discourses. For all those who are involved in co-operative urban development or want to accompany it with research. For a just city of the many.

Yes, factoring in various viewpoints is the way forward for empathetic leaders - and enables us to see more opportunities and avoid more risks. But we must combine that with swift and decisive action to make a call. Leaving your people in limbo or avoiding difficult conversations is unkind. And leaves your people paralyzed, unsure of what to believe, do, or expect next. In our dive into decisiveness today, I talk about what decisiveness is and why it is important. And I'll hone in on six strategies that you can start using today to be more decisive. In his 2017 classic Fate of the Nation, scenario planner Jakkie Cilliers outlined SA's three possible paths after projecting an ANC drop below 50% of the national vote in Election'24. But even the founder of the Institute of Security Studies was surprised by the extent of the former ruling party's decline. He reckons it accelerates key decisions that must be taken if a continued slide towards even greater unemployment and the resulting social chaos is to be avoided. Is there a right decision? If God is looking out for me, what would making the “wrong” decision even mean?
