Today we're diving into Pillar Four of the 5 Pillars of Effective Empathetic Leadership featured in the new book coming September 10, The Empathy Dilemma - Decisiveness. Yes, factoring in various viewpoints is the way forward for empathetic leaders - and enables us to see more opportunities and avoid more risks. But we must combine that with swift and decisive action to make a call. Leaving your people in limbo or avoiding difficult conversations is unkind. And leaves your people paralyzed, unsure of what to believe, do, or expect next. In our dive into decisiveness today, I talk about what decisiveness is and why it is important. And I'll hone in on six strategies that you can start using today to be more decisive. More details, examples, and tactics to try can be found in The Empathy Dilemma, so don't forget to snag your presale copy now at TheEmpathyDilemma.com. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Avoiding employees until you have something to report isn't empathetic - get in the habit of giving status updates, even if it is just “we're working on it.”Dithering over your decision does not demonstrate empathy. Not knowing what decision to make, no matter how you mask it, demonstrates fear and insecurity.Learn to be clearer more quickly. Talk openly about the choices you're making whenever possible.Put a deadline on your thoughts. It's not about making good choices, it's about making good choices in a timely manner. "Perfection isn't the goal, even when it comes to high-stakes choices. Don't succumb to analysis paralysis. Instead, gather input, decide, and move forward with a sense of curiosity and experimentation." — Maria Ross Join the community and discover what empathy can do for you: http://red-slice.comPRE-SALE SPECIAL! Hello everyone, Nicholas here. Your pals have taken the week off to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families, but rather than leave you hanging we've decided to re-run our interview with John Gruber from earlier this year. Have a great week, and we'll see you next week. -Nicholas **Original Show Notes Follow Below** Hello and welcome to yet another exciting edition of The HourTime Show, the official podcast of WristWatchReview.com. Your hosts this week are John, Victor, and Nicholas. Also joining us this week is fellow watch aficionado and longtime Apple observer John Gruber of Daring Fireball. We start this week with a quick wrist check: Victor's got an Ollech & Wajs C-1000, Nicholas has his gray CasiOak, and John has his Seamaster Chrono GMT. Gruber, who joins about one-third of the way through the episode, is wearing an Apple Watch (though he notes that he'd just as likely be wearing his Rolex Submariner ref. 14060M). Nicholas has a brief follow-up to a topic we discussed several weeks ago: whether or not the photos for the Hodinkee edition Oris (which we liked!) were shot on film or not. We now have confirmation that at least some of them were, and that the video was shot on Super 8. This leads to a mini rant from John on the state of media today and a critique of some very busy-looking Omegas. We then move onto some Apple talk, focusing on the newly released iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. Should you upgrade? That depends on where you're coming from, iPhone-wise, but certainly the macro photography mode of the 13 Pro would come in handy if you take a lot of watch photos. Instagram, here we come. Gruber then joins the pod, sparking a wide-ranging discussion of the Apple Watch, Rolex price creep, getting into "real" watches, and more. It's a great chat with some real watch geeks, so you're in for a treat! And that, as they say, is that. Big thanks to John Gruber for taking the time to hang with us this week. The Vocab Man - Fluent Vocabulary

YouTube Version: https://youtu.be/FPxQ2H_ZEy0Transcript:Dither - dither - dither The world doesn't have that much time to dither!Hello. I am the Vocab Man. After producing over 63 episodes consisting of five hours of audio materials in total, after more than 21,000 downloads. Thank you for that guys. The time has come to make a decision. Yeah, well actually, I've been dithering about what to do next. The thing is that my free plan on spreaker .Spreaker is the Vocab Man's podcast hoster. So the free plan on spreaker, which consists of exactly five hours of content has come to an end. Yeah. Unfortunately, but there is no time to dither because spreaker offers a reduced price, which is available only for a few days. In other words, the VOCA man is going to exist in the future. for free.If prince Charming walked up to you with a handful of diamonds, would you dither? Would you say, oh, I don't know. Let me think about it. Of course. He wouldn't. To dither means to act nervously or indecisively. And according to the free dictionary, it also means to make a fuss or to be agitated. And dither as a noun means a highly nervous, excited, or agitated state. So be committed to a national referendum. So the British people can again have their say and to hold it in the first half of the next parliament. This is one of the key choices that the election labor have spent 10 years making up their minds about whether they want a referendum on Europe. And after 10 years of dither, uncertainty, confusion, and contradiction, they've ended up making the wrong choice. And are still seeking to deny the democratic will of the people of this country. So now let's take a look at the etymologist side. So according to the website etymonline.com the word actually came 1640s, and it means to quake, tremble and is a phonetic variant of middle English didderen from the late 14th century, which is of uncertain origin.Imagine a giant asteroid on a direct collision course with earth. That is the equivalent of what we face now yet we dither taking no action to divert the asteroid, even though the longer we wait, the more difficult and expensive it becomes. This was the Vocab Man . Thank you for listening, dear listeners. And thank you all people who contributed to the Vocab Man, and also thank you to all the guys who are actually reading the transcript of the episodes because it's a hell of a lot of, uh, work to do so. I'm I'm really happy if there are even some people who are using it and reading it.And of course, remember there is a YouTube version of this podcast, which enables you to learn even better English and faster! Bye.

The Doorstep Mile
An invitation to the party

The Doorstep Mile

An invitation to the partyA company once invited me to their offices to give a talk about my favourite books. They suggested I talk for half an hour or so about six books I loved. It was a literary version of Desert Island Discs. It sounded interesting as well as a deliciously hard selection to make. I like books. I've read more than six. I'm quite happy about giving talks. I replied, ‘hell yeah!'So why did I feel unusually nervous on my way to the event?I was worried because I was not an expert. I am not a ‘Literary Critic'. I found Ulysses boring and loved the Da Vinci Code. I did not belong in the lofty world of book reviewing. Despite having written several books of my own, I never think of myself as an ‘author'. What right did I have to pontificate about Good Books?I have every right. But I only realised this several minutes into my talk. At first, I felt a fraud as I stood up and clicked into my PowerPoint presentation. I mumbled and avoided catching the boss's eye. If I am ever asked to do a similar event again, I will do a better talk. It would be more concise and articulate. More professional, perhaps, for I fear my ramblings were a little amateur. [A quick detour: the etymology of the word ‘amateur' derives from being a ‘lover of' something. That does not mean it is worse than being a professional. The spirit of the enthusiastic amateur is a vital component of this book. Do what you do because you love it. Or do what you do to the best of your ability and learn to love it. From this love and repetition will stem confidence, competence and momentum. So don't play down the role of the amateur. Indeed, turning ‘pro' – getting paid – can at times take the fun and simplicity out of what you are doing.]Anyway, back to my stuttering PowerPoint. At some point in the talk, I noticed I was no longer nervous and began to relax. The audience was actually interested in what I was saying. They were listening carefully. Most had never read my choices of book or heard about some of the stories. Therefore I was more of an expert than I'd appreciated. I knew more than my audience. I had feared raised eyebrows, but the response was much more positive. At the end of the talk, a cluster of people gathered round to ask questions or thank me for introducing them to new books. And I tucked into the evening's free beer and canapés with gusto. So now let me invite you to the party too.‘Come on in! You're very welcome. Whatever it is you are hesitant about, let me invite you to start. If you're already on the way, I give you permission to continue at full throttle.'It's up to you now to decide if you're going to turn up and shine. Whichever world you want to be a part of, just show up and get dancing.Dithering on the edge of the dance floor looks and feels so awkward (I know that only too well…) But everyone loves the person who thinks ‘to hell with it'. The one dancing under the lights like a loon, with all their heart and soul. Begin to the best of your amateur ability. Work hard at it. Get better at it. Enjoy it. It's going to be a hell of a party. You have a choice. And you have permission. In the next part of the book, it is time to begin.OVER TO YOU:Which party do you want an invitation to?In case you are curious, here are the six books I chose to speak about. The Worst Journey in the World (an example of the historical expeditions that originally got me interested in adventure travel.) As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (an example of superb travel writing.) Moondust (the greatest ever adventure and a nod towards the future of expeditions.) Arabian Sands (the inspiration for the first adventure film I made.) Feet in the Clouds (an example of UK endeavour and living adventurously for 'normal' people.) For Whom the Bell Tolls (an example of exemplary adventurous fiction.) ★ Support this podcast ★
