“Televangelism (likely a back-formation from televangelist, itself a portmanteau of "television" and "evangelist"), also sometimes called teleministry, is the use of media, specifically radio and television, to preach religion, and most prominently Christianity, though televangelist traditions exist in other religions, and notably Islam. Televangelists are either official or self-proclaimed ministers who devote a large portion of their ministry to television broadcasting. Some televangelists are also regular pastors or ministers in their own places of worship (often a megachurch), but the majority of their followers come from TV and radio audiences. Others do not have a conventional congregation, and work primarily through television. The term is also used derisively by critics as an insinuation of aggrandizement by such ministers. Televangelism began as a uniquely American phenomenon, resulting from a largely deregulated media where access to television networks and cable TV is open to virtually anyone who can afford it, combined with a large Christian population that is able to provide the necessary funding. It became especially popular among Evangelical Protestant audiences, whether independent or organized around Christian denominations. However, the increasing globalisation of broadcasting has enabled some American televangelists to reach a wider audience through international broadcast networks, including some that are specifically Christian in nature. Some countries have a more regulated media with either general restrictions on access or specific rules regarding religious broadcasting. In such countries, religious programming is typically produced by TV companies (sometimes as a regulatory or public service requirement) rather than private interest groups.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

“Over a hundred Black clergy are joining forces to protest the racially insensitive environment at The Word Network, a Christian T.V. station that sells itself as the world's largest African-Ameican Religious Network that reaches 93 million homes in the U.S. The network is owned by a white man named Kevin Adell, and pastors claim he has a history of outright racist actions. His biggest move came on September 19, 2019 when he sent a text message with a photo of himself dressed like a pimp surrounded by Black clergymen he deemed his “hoes.” This incident ignited a boycott against the Word Network kicked off on Change.org. Preachers around the country have signed up to support the boycott, included Bishop George Bloomer, who is one of the preachers featured most prominently in Adell's pimp photo. All the clergy are planning protests in Michigan and other targeted locations throughout the country. Archbishop E. Bernard Jordan, Zoe Ministries, Pastor Debra Jordan, Zoe Ministries, Pastor Larry Reid, Larry Reid Live, Vickie Yohe, Christian Recording Artist, Paul Crouch, Jr. Impact Network, Lisa Sharon Harper, Freedom Roads, and Rev. Anita Faye-Wilson ae just a few of the 100 preachers joining in the boycott. Adell claims he didn't create the racist pimp image, however, he also didn't protest its circulation. In fact, he texted it to various staff, many of whom are Black, including Bishop Bloomer. In the Change.org petition, it's layed out that Bishop Bloomer tried to tell Adell, “This is not funny. This is not good. That pimp talk and hoe talk has racist connotations for Black people.” However, Adell texted Bishop Bloomer, witing “it's funny and you should get over it.” At one point, Adell went even further by photoshopping a picture of Bishop Bloomer in a white tuxedo and below the photo, he typed the text, “The show last night was good, Tattoo (the dwarf from the 1977 show “Fantasy Island” who went around calling Mr. Roarke “Boss”). In other words, Adell was calling Bishop Bloomer his Tattoo, while he was the “Boss.” The last straw came when Bishop Bloomer texted Adell again saying, “This is not good. I don't know what you are doing but stop playing.” Adell responded, “Oh, you're too sensitive.” Bishop Bloomer tried to explain that what Adell was doing was similar to a white man wearing blackface. Bishop Bloomer told Adell once again, “Get rid of this. Stop playing with this.” Adell then texted Bishop Bloomer a picture of himself in a white tuxedo standing next to a friend of his also wearing a white tuxedo. Supposedly using a sharpie, he blacked out the face of the friend, thus producing blackface. Bishop Bloomer ended up leaving The Word Network after this and now, he and the other clergy are demanding Adell publically apologize to Bishop Bloomer and the Black community and they also demand that cable companies drop The Word Network from their packages. You can check out more of their demands at the Change.org petition here, which has since received over 3000 signatures.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

There might be nothing more American than the emergence of Capitalist Jesus and the Prosperity Gospel. This episode explores the men behind the phenomenon, and the scriptural passages that are abused to defend it. Not all Pentecostal Christians fall into this trap, but these pastors have millions of followers around the world. Many of them are fundamentalists in some ways, though radically anti-scriptural in other (more important) ways.Mesmerism and the New Thought Movement are significant stones in this foundation, and Televangelism--especially the Word of Faith ministries--has brought a global audience to these hateful preachers, including Oral Roberts, Kenneth Hagin, Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, and Creflo Dollar. Oral Roberts led a tremendous empire, including a whole university (more successful than Trump's), and he was the personal mentor of Kenneth Copeland, who raised big money for Angel Flight 44, only to refuse to fly relief to Haiti. Of course there are high profile prostitution scandals, and preachers who later admit that they've never taken the time to read the Bible until they were locked up with nothing but time and their 'favorite book' after fraud convictions. Some of these men will demand you go into debt to pay tithes, others later claim that tithing isn't biblical (Creflo Dollar). All of these preachers, and more, are comfortable asking you to fund their lavish lifestyle, while their fancy words let them off the hook for any return on your investment. Senate financial probes, and fraud charges aren't enough to protect the most vulnerable people among us. Only education can fix this problem; Holy Watermelon is here to help.Support us at Patreon and SpreadshirtJoin the Community on DiscordLearn more great religion facts on Facebook and InstagramIn this episode, we also mentioned John Oliver's take on televangelists, and PreachersNSneakers

It's Casual Friday! Sam hosts David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect, to break down the week in news. Then, Sam is joined by Jordan Holmes and Dan Friesen, co-hosts of the Knowledge Fight podcast, to discuss the recent Alex Jones-Sandy Hook trial. First, Sam walks through Merrick Garland's first impactful moment as Donald Trump put him front and center in the raid on Mar-a-Lago, also touching on today's IRA vote in the House, the banning of gender-affirming care for ADULTS in Florida, and Europe seeing its worst drought in five centuries. David Dayen then joins as he and Sam discuss how Manchin's Inflation Reduction Act impacts the US' healthcare infrastructure, looking first at its changes to ACA and ARP exchange rates, before diving deep into its empowerment of Medicare to negotiate drug prices, and why it's so important despite its limitation to 10 drugs per year, and not kicking until the next presidential election is over, meaning a Ron DeSantis or Donald J. Trump might be able to take credit for capped Medicare prices. Next, they move on to the Climate provisions of the IRA, with David walking through the positives we can take, including significant investment in domestic production in next-gen tech, particularly when it comes to EVs and batteries, before parsing through the myriad carrots that drive the bill's policy, how it employs the tax code throughout all of this, and why this essentially deputizes the US Treasury to interpret out climate provisions. After expanding on the tax credits that come from EVs that don't yet exist, they wrap up by taking on Manchin's disastrous fossil fuel provisions, from wider-scale requirements to lease fossil fuel extraction before leasing any permits for building renewable energy sites, to literally just “let me build my pipeline.” Then, Dan Friesen and Jordan Holmes join as they reflect on the evolution of the Alex Jones Conspiratorial Multiverse, his slow shift to Televangelism, and how the roots of his income (beyond largely being fear-driven) are still obscured from even the most learned Info Warrior. And in the Fun Half, Sam and the MR Crew dive into the the interesting push by Republicans in Congress to now all of a sudden hate the FBI. Steve Doocy has had just about enough of that, as he spars with Elise Stefanik and Steve Scalise over their inability to "back the blue" anymore now that they've raided Trump's home. Then they look at whether Brian Kilmeade's producers hate him or if they were really that dumb to accidentally put on screen a photoshopped image of a Florida judge on Jeffrey Epstein's body onboard the Lolita Express. Then, the MR universe gets a look behind the curtain as to what went down when Sam was able to mole his way onto the Dennis Prager Show (for approximately 5 seconds), and how, despite Prager's aching for it, he won't engage in spirited intellectual debate. This last year (or two) has been a fun dip into Hell, and it's rekindled my interest in Televangelism. I used to record a lot of them on VHS tapes in the 1990s and so this week I thought I'd share my favorite one. I originally labeled it "Reverend Hellfire" on the VHS label. It's an amazing story that is literally rags to riches, from preaching in front of trash dumpsters 45 years previous, that suddenly erupts into a constant flood of thousand dollar bills. He actually talks to God. Do you have $1000? Do you have a phone? CALL NOW! You'll hear the full pitch in this week's Side A. Side B continues the Charlie Pickle serial, with "The Daily Worry". The opening half of the show discusses Landline Phones and their wonderful floor of ambient noise as it relates to emotional memory. Plug in and enjoy.

Pastor Dean Inserra sees a crisis of faith coming. He sees that a false Christianity has become popular by taking the self-help movement and making it sound biblical. Televangelism has moved from the TV to social media, and it's spreading a new kind of Prosperity Gospel that says God will make you rich and famous. In his new book, "Getting Over Yourself," Pastor Dean Inserra shows how pop Christianity misses the entire point of being a Christian: Not I, but Christ in me.  Sponsors: Bambee: HR Policy Shouldn't Be Left To Google.  Bambee gives you a dedicated HR manager who helps you craft HR policy and maintain compliance. In the minds of many American Christians, church isn't a place to go to connect with the transcendence of God and contemplate the majesty, wonder, and beauty of the mysteries of the Divine- it's a place we visit to be entertained and catered to. Some of our worship gatherings feel more like a pep rally or a pop concert than they do a worship service, and in many gatherings the teaching of God's Word has been replaced by a more informal, conversational TED talk style sermonette about the importance of the journey of falling in love with Jesus. Oh, and on your way out of the auditorium, be sure to check out the church's other offerings such as CD's, books, and t-shirts for sale. But it's not just in our churches, as American Christians we've created our own unique, heavily commercialized, highly monetized subculture. We've got Christian radio, Christian recording artists, Christian movies, Christian TV, Christian themed restaurants, even Christian amusement parks.  We all know it, but most of us are just afraid to say it out loud- it's big business. And we're the customers. How did we get here? Is this the vision Jesus had for His Church 2,000 years ago? And what impact is this excessive commercialization having on our understanding of the Church's mission? Is it wrong for worship services to be engaging or entertaining? Is it wrong to sell Christian books or make Christian music?

#Prosperitytheology #Televangelism #KennethCopeland (sometimes referred to as the prosperity gospel, the health and wealth gospel, the gospel of success, or seed faith)[A] is a religious belief among some Protestant Christians that financial blessing and physical well-being are always the will of God for them, and that faith, positive speech, and donations to religious causes will increase one's material wealth.[1] Prosperity theology views the Bible as a contract between God and humans: if humans have faith in God, he will deliver security and prosperity.[2] KennethCopeland He has been identified as preaching the prosperity gospel. As part of his evangelism, he calls for donations to his church, with the suggestion that parishioners will get a "hundredfold" return on their investment.[2] He has stirred controversy over his use of donations to finance mansions, private jets, an airport and other lavish purchases.[3][4] During the pandemic of COVID-19 in 2020, Copeland gained national attention for his comments and actions in response to the outbreak. He repeatedly claimed that the pandemic had ended or would soon end, that he could heal followers of it, and that his followers should continue paying tithes if they lost their jobs in the economic crisis that the pandemic caused.[5] He later made claims to have destroyed the virus and to have ended the still-ongoing pandemic.[5] Televangelism Televangelism (tele- "distance" and "evangelism," meaning "ministry," sometimes called teleministry) is the use of media, specifically radio and television, to communicate Christianity. Televangelists are ministers, whether official or self-proclaimed, who devote a large portion of their ministry to television broadcasting. Some televangelists are also regular pastors or ministers in their own places of worship (often a megachurch), but the majority of their followers come from TV and radio audiences. Others do not have a conventional congregation, and work primarily through television. The term is also used derisively by critics as an insinuation of aggrandizement by such ministers. weki --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message

What American with cable tv and a remote control has not had that skeptical thought run through their head? And rightfully so. "Televangelism" is a bane of the American church and an affront to the very heart of the gospel. Truth be told, all of church history is littered with liars, thieves, and charlatans who sought to manipulate the gospel for their own financial gain. This practice is a sin that is condemned throughout Scripture, one that the church must own up to and fight hard against it. But it's no reason for any of us to avoid participating in and, yes, even giving generously to the work of the gospel through the local church. Jesus warned us: "You cannot love God and money. It's one or the other." Another way to say that is, "If Jesus is our greatest treasure, money isn't, and we'll give like crazy." And so when the church calls us to give, it's not because God needs our money, but because we need to be free from the love of it.
