In this episode we have the pleasure of interviewing Brian Maiorano, the coach liaison at CORE Body Temperature. The CORE sensor is the first and only wearable that provide continuous, accurate core body temperature monitoring. The sensor allows you to easily see how much your core temperature rises with effort, so you can train your body to adapt to internal and external heat. You can also design personalized cooling protocols crucial to helping you sustain your power and pace on race day. With CORE, you'll be ready to perform at your absolute best in any conditions. Enjoy the listen and thanks for joining us Brian. CORE has kindly offered a 10% discount to any of our listeners via the following discount code: AGFL10 (valid through Friday, March 22). --- Show Notes: We introduce Brian, a triathlon coach and Core Body liaison based in Switzerland. Brian discussed his background coaching in San Diego and now balancing training with fatherhood. Heat Training Strategies @ 0:50 Brian detailed strategies for heat adaptation training, recommending 2-3 intense sessions weekly to elevate core temperature and induce physiological changes like increased blood plasma and sweat rate. Precision with a core sensor prevents overheating. Heat Adaptation and Performance @ 4:40 Brian explained how core temperature impacts performance through cardiac drift. As heat rises, blood redirects from muscles to skin, slowing pace and power. Careful heat training builds tolerance while sensors provide awareness to race effectively in warm conditions. Core Product Overview @ 6:43 Brian outlined Core's temperature-sensing technology, validated to track internal heat through skin. Data enables targeted heat training, guiding athletes to physiological benefits without exhaustion. Racing feedback alerts to impending performance declines. Elite Heat Training Methods @ 40:50 Top pros leverage extensive data to optimize efficiency gains through precise thermal regulation. Kristian Blummenfelt's Kona performance showed extreme yet dangerous adaptation levels attainable with disciplined heat training. Heat Training for Cold Climates @ 43:00 While primarily focused on heat, strategies like over-layering transfers to cold tolerance. Core temperature rises are trainable, and sensors provide awareness of skin temperature impacts on performance in freezing conditions. Strategic exposure maintains heat without risk of frostbite.

Sengled The Smart Health Monitoring Light bulb claims to read heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs through entirely non-invasive sensors. It uses a radar sensor instead of a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, meaning it can read through materials and detect more subtleties. Ideally, the higher sensitivity would allow for the light bulbs to detect different people, see movement through textiles and other complexities of off-skin health tracking. According to Sengled, a collection of Smart Health Monitoring Light bulbs connect via Bluetooth mesh to create a virtual map in your home, relying on several points of “view” for complete health tracking. To be clear, the light bulb doesn't have a camera or anything built in. It can't see or record you, just sense you. This week's EYE on NPI brings you Analog Devices' ADT7422 ultra-high accuracy and precision temperature sensor. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/analog-devices/adt7422-01-c-accurate-digital-temperature-sensor) With an astonishing ±0.1°C rated accuracy, you can use this sensor for real-time, calibration-free temperature sensing. A built-in I2C ADC interface provides 16-bit data, so you could use this sensor with any microcontroller or microprocessor and get 0.0078 °C resolution. And you can have up to 4 of these sensors on a single I2C bus by changing the I2C address pins A0/A1. ADT7422 is ADI's first ±0.1°C accurate temperature sensor that doesn't require any external circuitry for operation. It can easily replace more complex and expensive solutions that use alternative sensor technologies such as thermistors or RTDs. In addition, high-precision silicon sensors (ICs) are preferred options for a range of emerging applications in the healthcare market such as vital signs monitoring instruments for clinical and home use. Features ±0.1°C accuracy specification enables the end product to measure temperature with accuracy that was only possible for thermistors and RTDs Doesn't require external circuitry: smaller, lower power, and lower cost than older sensing technologies Fully tested and calibrated solution: doesn't require system calibration to achieve desired ±0.1°C measurement precision The highest accuracy of ±0.1°C comes is achievable between 25°C ~ 50°C. From −20°C to +105°C the accuracy is ±0.25°C and from −40°C to +125°C its ±0.50°C. For high temperature ranges, such as for use with scientific or food processes, you probably want to go with a PT100/PT1000 RTD sensor interface (https://www.analog.com/en/applications/technology/precision-sensor-interface/temperature-sensing/rtd.html) - for example verifying the temperature of a yogurt processing system, or a chemical heater. These sensors are more tuned towards human/bio measurement - for example a long-term temperature/health monitor that uses skin temperature, implanted glucose monitor, or an incubator - all places where you want very high accuracy! Interfacing with the chip is really simple, in fact we were able to borrow a lot of code from the ADT7410 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4089) library we wrote a year ago (https://github.com/adafruit?q=adt7410&type=&language=) and read out the temperature in both C and Python. Analog Devices also has 'pure C' drivers available on GitHub (https://github.com/analogdevicesinc/no-OS/tree/master/drivers/temperature/adt7420) We picked up one of Analog Device's dev boards. You can see a few interesting details like PCB slots to help keep the chip thermally isolated. There's also an Arduino-compatible Eval shield (https://www.analog.com/media/en/dsp-documentation/evaluation-kit-manuals/dc2026cfe.pdf) you can use to plug and play this sensor, but we found it works perfectly fine with plain 0.1" jumpers, just make sure you're giving it 3.3V for power! Add tiny, accurate temperature sensing today by picking up an ADT7422 from Digi-Key, available in cut-tape & reel, by visiting https://www.digikey.com/short/zf0d21 Your order will ship same day and you can get it in hand the next morning!

Guest Bio Jared Porcenaluk is a warlock alchemist who bides his time by mixing software development and DevOps to create magical panaceas for all sorts of development process ailments. Lately, he's been delving into clairvoyance by way of the Internet of Things, gathering information from far off lands without even needing to be there. As many alchemists do, he swings between believing he's Level 1 and Level 20, depending on whether his latest potions succeed or fail. He writes, prolifically, on ancient scrolls, as well as Twitter @jporcenaluk and on his blog at jaredporcenaluk.com. What was the quest? I've been searching for a way to better understand my noble steed from anywhere in the four corners of this ancient kingdom. It is a Bronco with the power of more than a hundred average horses, specifically, it is a 1988 Ford Bronco II. He had been vexed with a spell that made it impossible to understand what his internal coolant temperature was, and so by mixing a Temperature Sensor elixir and, strangely enough, a raspberry pi, I was able to achieve a sort of second sight into the inner workings of the beast. Now I'm able to read the temperature of the coolant from anywhere, and most importantly, it is accurate.
