Katie HerzogTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Katie Herzog. Katie is a well-known and respected journalist who has written for publications including: The Stranger, The Atlantic, Reason, Medium, and more. She is also a co-host of the very popular podcast Blocked and Reported; with her friend and fellow journalist Jesse Singal. In this episode, Katie and I chat about where and how she grew up, and what informed her journalistic endeavors. I do grill Katie about some of the crazy stories from her past that I found. We touch briefly on her time working for NPR, and she enlightens me about The Internet Archive, and The Way Back Machine. Then we get into her podcast. Again, it's called Blocked and Reported and she tells me about why she started it, and why she is glad she didn't start it sooner. Finally, we dive into her new book. It doesn't have a name quite yet but should be released around October of 2025. This book chronicles her journey of drinking herself sober. You read that right. That's a very fascinating concept, and she tells me all about how she came to find this path, and why she felt the need to share her experience in the form of her very first book. Make sure you check out her podcast, it is a lot of fun, and be sure to stay tuned for her book around October of 2025.

Interview by Kris PetersAussie prog rock legends COG don't just spend their time promoting their own music, they also give back to the Australian music scene by regularly taking local bands with them on the road, and now helping run their own music festival to help highlight some of this countries hardest working and quickest rising outfits. The Other Festival is set down for January 28 at The Tivoli in Brisbane, with COG being joined by Osaka Punch, The Stranger, Bare Bones, The Wrath, Rhino, Mass Sky Raid, Minds End and more in a one day extravaganza that made its debut in 2021.COG drummer Lucius Borich joined HEAVY earlier this week to chat about The Other Festival and... whatever else he felt like really."We're very pumped," he enthused. "Getting the fuel in the tank, getting the cogs all greased up, getting rid of the cogwebs..."COG have never been a band to over-saturate the market with singles and/or live shows, and as such don't necessarily get the chance to be match fit so to speak when it comes to performing."We just did that bunch of five shows with Karnivool on the Monolith Festival," he said, "and went to all of the different states of Australia and we hadn't played - because of COVID and all that stuff - we hadn't played for almost two years. That was a real adjustment. All of a sudden BOOM, you're up in front of 3000, 4000 people, whatever it was, and it was somewhat intimidating. I think we did well, but to try and get in that frame of mind and that environment and feel comfortable after two years of not playing was definitely a challenge, that's for sure. I think we pulled it off and we've got a bit of that still remaining in the tank from doing those shows which was only about four months ago. It definitely requires you to be playing quite a lot to feel confident and comfortable but we just don't seem to have that luxury to some degree. Just given the circumstances of everyone's lives and where we're at in our career but we try to rehearse and get things dialled in and then just get up there and do what we need to do. But to be a well fitted out, oiled up outfit you do need to have regular gigs and it does make it harder when you don't, so it's challenging - which is good in some respects. You could say it adds a lot more dynamic to the performance because you're not playing all the time or jaded. So there's a little bit of that double edged sword there. It's kind of one of those situations."In the full interview, Lucius talks more about The Other Festival and what to expect, the other bands on the line-up, what sort of criteria is used to select bands on a festival bill, moving from Fortitude Music Hall to The Tivoli, current writing progress and more.

The Stranger (Agantuk) by Satyajit Ray is our first Bengali film on the podcast. Despite it being Ray's final film, it is a wonderful film on its own merits, as the great Utpal Dutt plays the charming visitor who, for reasons unknown, returns to a Bengali urban elite (or Bhadralok) family which may or may not be his own. With amazing dialogue, camerawork and performances, the film casts a humane and complex gaze on how the bhadralok respond to the ever-changing world outside Calcutta.
Brisbane progressive rock/metal outfit The Stranger have released the title track for their upcoming second album, "Kaleidoscope".The band has gone from strength to strength in the last 18 months, not only winning over a new legion of fans musically, but also winning the Brisbane Heat of the Wacken Battle of the Bands as well as signing recently to Octane Records and Wild Thing Records.Guitarist Kalen Austin sat down with HEAVY in a rural setting (hence the animal noises invading the interview) to discuss the single and more."This song was one of those rare times when I sat down and all the music came out in one go," he explained. "It was one of those wonderful moments where inspiration sort of started and didn't stop and I just clung on for dear life and the whole song finished itself in a very short space of time. I was very happy about that (laughs). Essentially this one started off as an acoustic thing and basically once I had the first couple of chords of the acoustic intro the rest of the song just sort of built itself in my head as I went. It was very, very satisfying to write and it was one of those rare times that I was able to take a complete idea from start to finish to the band and say here's the new song all done."In the full interview, Kalen talks about the song lyrically, the upcoming album, signing to a major label, their sound and how it came together, how COVID specifically impacted The Stranger and more.

I'm hoping everyone is having a great start to the week and to help with that here is the latest episode of The Movie Breakdown. This week we look at two cult horror movies; we review the gory and controversial Clive Barker directed Hellraiser and the 1978 tongue-in-cheek Jaws knock-off, Piranha. We also go all the back to 1946 with legendary director Orson Welles' third feature, The Stranger. We also have two Netflix originals; the Alan Yang story of a Taiwanese immigrant Tigertail and the romantic comedy Love, Wedding, Repeat. We discuss some movies that have had significant impact on the history of cinema, and we talk a bit about what they meant for the time and their lasting influence. As always, it was a great time talking motion pictures and we really hope you love it. If you do, then please show your appreciation by sharing the episode on social media,Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review). The Movies' Rating Out of Four StarsTigertail *** (CS & SM)Love, Wedding, Repeat *½ (CS) & ** (SM)Hellraiser *** (CS & SM)The Stranger ***½ (CS & SM)Piranha *** (CS & SM)

After World War II, Hollywood was looking to return to doing what it does best and with a new paranoia of international intrigue and the return of history's most notorious villains, producer Sam Spiegel tasked a desperate Orson Welles to make The Stranger. Welles, put on a tight leash and deprived of most of the artistic freedom he was usually given, made this thriller about a Nazi hiding in an affluent New England town as a dogged investigator is on his trail. Considered to be Welles' least favorite film of his career, it was also his biggest box office maker as well. But did it deserve the money or was Welles right to be disappointed? Hello Friends! I have to tell you, the ol' Professor has not had a great week.. been down with an awful case of the flu since last saturday night, which forced me to cancel a trip I had planned to the great Southwest :( However my week was brightened by a very sweet note and donation from Stephen and Kristi of New York City (who are dealing with their own nasty weather problems this week). Thanks my friends. I'm still running a fever and dealing with some nasty abdominal stuff so I'm afraid I'm going to make this introduction to this week's Deadpod short and sweet.. The first half of this second set is wonderful.. It's always a joy to hear Pig sing 'The Stranger' and the boys are really moving this one down the track so buckle up and enjoy the ride. On the podcast, DiGiacomo shares his memories of being a young Billy Joel fan in Youngstown, Ohio at the time of the album's release, and discusses both the impact the album had at the time, and the ways it was misunderstood by contemporary critics. In this episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors, Jason and Christian begin by discussing some of the blowback from last week’s interview with Dan Savage, and then take a series of voicemails on topics ranging from how sexy our voices are to whether we should have free college tuition, and from the refugee crisis to whether we truly mock God on our show. We address the issues of modern evangelical culture and persecution in America, after which Christian gets super pissed at his kids and we all get to hear what that sounds like. Dick Bush calls in for tips on becoming a good “agnostical,” and we introduce a new segment called “Go Home, Google, You’re Drunk” which leads to a discussion about elitism, tastemakers, and how stupid everyone is. We then spend a good deal of time arguing about whether, how, and how cavalierly abortion doctors should be killed. In our “Dick Move, God” segment we meet a man who was fired for sustaining an on-the-job injury, and Jason is biebered by how pointless it is to listen to podcasts.
In this episode, the DXPs sit down with infamous sex advice columnist and gay-rights activist Dan Savage. Highlights include Christian telling a vagina-centric story that shocks Dan and renders him speechless (no easy feat in his line of work), and Dan connecting with Jason over their mutual love of musical theater (to the point where Dan refers to him as “Girl!”). Dan discusses his sexuality, the Catholicism with which he was raised, and the origins of his “It Gets Better” project. And in a shocking display of vulnerability no doubt occasioned by his drinking almost an entire bottle of sparkling rosé, Dan tips his hand and discloses the various insidious elements of the Gay Agenda™. The discussion finally turns to divorce, cheating, and why gays want to be married so badly when straight people are finding less and less use for it. Also, that thing of when an openly non-monogamous married gay man welcomes you home to Mother Church? Priceless.
This week Dan speaks with Janet Yassen from the national rape support organization RAINN about recovering your sexuality after a sexual assault. A father struggles to explain his affair to his 12 year old daughter. On the Magnum, Dan dishes with Dan Pashman, host of WNYC's The Sporkful on the connection between food, sex, and general deliciousness. And, does the HPV really vaccine work? The answer is yes. But in case you are still skeptical, Dan brings on an expert to confirm. 206-201-2720 Get tickets to our Christmas Extravaganza!! Hoorah! Yes, the newest episode is finally here! So, on this sixth episode of the Terminus podcast (released during the two days I'm actually at home and not traveling during these two weeks!), join me as I chat about some of the more *obscure* Doctor Who spin-offs (and try and not stumble over saying 'BBV' many, many times). This time around I'm focusing on 'P.R.O.B.E.', 'The Stranger', 'The Airzone Solution', and 'Downtime', but never fear, there are more episodes on spin-offs planned for the future! *crickets* Yeah, not sure this episode has much of a target audience! Anyway, I also talk about geeking out with Andrew Cartmel on Twitter, Target books, and 50th Anniversary miscellany (specifically some bits about the BFI screenings and the Master's new anniversary-edition fob watch). Oh, and I'm *almost* back on schedule with scheduled release dates (squeezing in recording and editing between all my recent travel has proved an interesting challenge), so that is made of awesome! Until then, be sure to subscribe to the podcast either on iTunes, Stitcher, or just the RSS feed to keep up with the newest episodes as they're released. And, as always, enjoy the ride!
