V V Brown is back after what feels like an age away. It's actually eight years, with little seen or heard of the Northampton born singer since the 2015 release of her third record Glitch. Now back and with a new record, Am I British Yet?, due for release on October 27th, the V V Brown that returns in 2023 is a different kind of Vanessa Brown that what we've seen before. Sure, the new record is as melodic and impassioned as anything that has gone pror, as well as being fuelled by groove, sass and the 39 year old's unwavering love of 90s hip hop. But while V V Brown has always had a voice – one of modern pop's most remarkable singing voices in fact – on Am I British Yet?, as much a mediation on Black Britishness as a pop record, you might argue that Vanessa has found her voice. I don't agree with everything she has to say, I think we might get into some of that when we swing around for part two - but I certainly enjoyed talking to her and exploring some of her ideas. And I hope you enjoy listening to it!Watch this episode here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKep9hWc3H0&t=2s Twitter - @jamesjammcmahon Substack - https://spoook.substack.com YouTube - www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Vf_1E1Sza2GUyFNn2zFMA Reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/jamesmcmahonmusicpod/

The conservative peer Baroness Sayeeda Warsi has criticised the home secretary Suella Braverman for using "racist rhetoric". She says her recent comments on small boats and grooming gangs have "emboldened racists". Baroness Warsi held a number of ministerial roles in the coalition government before resigning in 2014. Anita asks her why she's decided to speak out now. If you've had breast cancer – what do you know about the signs the disease may have progressed? The charity Met UP UK says the information given to the 55,900 people diagnosed every year is very patchy. Every day, 31 women in the UK die from secondary breast cancer, which is incurable. In Greater Manchester every patient is provided with an infographic in their end of treatment plan, about signs to look out for. NHS England says it has adopted this in its guidelines but can't mandate every health trust uses it. We speak to Jo Taylor from METUP UK and oncologist Carlo Palmieri from Clatterbridge Health Centre about why this is important. In November 2005 police constable Sharon Beshenivsky she was shot and killed as she responded to an alarm at a travel agent in Bradford. She was with a colleague PC Teresa Millburn who was also shot but survived. Today, a 74-year old man is due to appear in court charged with Sharon's murder after being extradited from Pakistan. Anita speaks to Julie Langford, a journalist at BBC Radio Leeds who was at the scene the day after it happened. For the first time ever the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has begun collating data on the number of women undergoing labiaplasty where women want to reduce the size of the labia. It's in response to the increased demand for the procedure which some fear could be driven by either body dysphoria or the prevalence of pornography. Anita Rani talks to cosmetic surgeon Dr Paraskevi Dimitriadi and psychologist Elizabeth Ritchie about the trend. "Cluttercore" and "Clustercore" are the latest interior design trends popping up on social media. Minimalism is out, and rooms bursting at the seams with clashing colours and loads of knick-knacks are in. But it's more than just having lots of items everywhere. You have to arrange the items in curated vignettes. So, how is it done? When does it become clutter? And, what's the history behind our desire to organise and curate? Anita is joined by Claire Bingham author of The New Naturalists: Inside the Homes of Creative Collectors, and Dr Vanessa Brown, senior lecturer at the Nottingham School of Art & Design at Nottingham Trent University. Implicit bias is a fancy way of saying "having an attitude about something or someone because they are unfamiliar". In this episode, you'll get a better grasp of the concept and we'll meet one of the researchers who helped develop the very first implicit bias scale for mental healthcare practitioners. Dr. Vanessa Brown talks about the kink bias that some patients face from mental healthcare workers. She also addresses the lack of support that those practitioners face as they strive to provide good mental healthcare. When we are confronted with the unknown, we automatically feel suspicious; this is a protective behavior that all creatures have developed over time. As humans, we get to choose if we want to use our substantial cerebrum to make a different choice. This research team came up with the first implicit bias scale to help these practitioners identify their biases around the topic of kink so that they can change their reactions if they so choose. Their scale will be publicly available soon and I'll post a link when it is. Until then, here is a helpful link to "Kink Guidelines: Clinical Best Practices". As a patient, you can see that you have a right to expect complete acceptance of your choices and as a practitioner, you'll find helpful information about how to assist your clients who practice or want to practice consensual kink. Here is a link to the Kink Aware Professionals list. On October 28th at 5:00 PM Pacific Time, Dr. Brown, Lexi Gird, and other research team members will join us for a live Q&A to discuss their work. I encourage you to join us if you are a patient, a healthcare practitioner, a sex educator, or a researcher. This is going to be a fantastic panel! Here is the LINK, and the passcode is 219308.

It's the stuff of fast food nightmares, but for one country, running out of McDonald's has become a reality.McDonald's restaurants across Fiji have announced on social media that due to global shipping issues, some of the fan favourites will be off the menu. From the Big Mac to the cheeseburger, Quarter Pounder and even McFeast — "valued customers" may be forced to dine on a Filet-O-Fish instead during their next visit to the golden arches."Please note the unavailability of beef patty products at our restaurants till further notice," the post read."We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused."McDonald's restaurants across Fiji have announced on social media that due to global shipping issues, some of the fan favourites will be off the menu. Photo / McDonald's FijiIn an interview with local media FBC News, McDonald's Fiji operations manager Damon Gregg said there was no clarity in when held-up stock would arrive in store."The container ships have been late loading and late leaving so that's the key issue behind it," he said, adding local restaurants have turned to bringing in frozen stock by air from New Zealand instead. While Fiji faces a long week without favourite Macca's burgers, it's not the only country to be facing shortages. In the past 12 months, Japan had to cancel all sales on medium and large-sized portions of its fries due to a potato shortage. Leon Ames broke out with his portrayal of Judy Garland's dad in Meet Me in St. Louis, and he played several outwardly stuffy but inwardly sweet dads - and showed off a dry wit - in movies and TV shows through the 1980s. We'll hear him in his one and only visit to Suspense as a businessman who overhears a murder plot when he plays hooky from the office in "An Evening's Diversion" (originally aired on CBS on July 4, 1946). Then, Ames co-stars with Vanessa Brown in an adaptation of Sinclair Lewis' novel Main Street for The NBC University Theatre (originally aired on NBC on July 30, 1948).
Book Vs. Movie: The Seven Year ItchThe George Axelrod 1952 Play Vs. the 1955 Billy Wilder FilmWhen the coronavirus pandemic began, the Margos decided to expand on the very idea of a “book” to movie adaptation to cover weekly. The timing of putting our four episodes a month means we can't always cover anything longer than 200 pages. This is why we have also talked about magazine articles, songs, and plays on this show. This episode is devoted to The Seven Year Itch which started on Broadway in 1952 with Tom Ewell and Vanessa Brown and was written by George Axelrod (who later adapted Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Manchurian Candidate which we have discussed on this show before.) The story of a married man, Richard Sherman played by Ewell, whose family spends the summer in Maine while he sweats it out in their Gramercy Park apartment. (And I thought I had problems!) While learning about extramarital affairs from a book he is publishing, he soon begins a friendly relationship with a new neighbor. THE GIRL is never given a name and she is vexing him with her beauty. In the play (spoiler!), they have a brief romantic encounter which leaves him feeling guilty and heading up to Maine and back to his wife. The show features dream sequences and we actually hear Richard's inner dialog the whole time. Supposedly Ewell worked to change the quirky behavior with each performance (he would go on to win a TONY for best dramatic actor) and at 1,141 performances--it was the longest-running nonmusical play of the 1950s on Broadway. Ewell was pleasantly surprised to be asked to lead in the film adaptation by Billy Wilder. Years later, Wilder would complain that the current Hays Codes ruined the story by not allowing Richard to actually have an affair with THE GIRL (played by a shimmering Marilyn Monroe.) The movie is special for many reasons: Marilyn and the “white dress” moment is a classic, and the original Pennsylvania Station is featured before its horrible destruction in 1963 (a blight on NYC) to name just two things. It's impossible to talk about Monroe without talking about her chaotic private life which always seemed to create havoc on movie sets. Her husband Joe DiMaggio was NOT happy about the world watching his wife getting her dress blown by a wind machine. Monroe's battle with anxiety and depression caused her to be late to set. Her legendary ability to forget her lines caused major delays to the film which caused the budget to go to $1.8 million. The movie was a hit and made money but her reputation for being a problem followed her for the rest of her career. So between the two, which did we like more? The play or the movie? In this ep the Margos discuss:The stage version and how it became a huge success.Marilyn Monroe's life and career in the 1950s.Changes to the film that critics and Wilder dislikedThe cast: Tom Ewell (Richard Sherman,) Marilyn Monroe (The Girl,) Evelyn Keyes (Helen Sherman,) Sonny Tufts (Tom MacKenzie,) Victor Moore (plumber,) Oscar Homolka (Dr. Brubaker,) Marguerite Chapman (Miss Morris,) and Carolyn Jones as Nurse Finch. In this episode, Judy is eager to become the New Year's Rose Queen. That leads to dream sequence, featuring Mel Blanc handling multiple voices, with Judy in a Queen of the Klondike pageant. Then “The Quiz Kids” amaze with their general breath of knowledge and math skills. This episode includes an interview with a Kid who actually has gone to Hollywood and made good. Fifty years ago, a serial killer prowled the quiet city of London, Ontario, marking it as his hunting grounds. As young women and boys were abducted, raped, and murdered, residents of the area held their loved ones closer and closer, terrified of the monster ? or monsters ? stalking the streets. Homicide detective Dennis Alsop began hunting the killer in the 1960s, and he didn’t stop searching until his death 40 years later. For decades, detectives, actual and armchair, and the victims’ families and friends continued to ask questions: Who was the Forest City Killer? Was there more than one person, or did a depraved individual commit all of these crimes on his own?Combing through the files Detective Alsop left behind, researcher Vanessa Brown reopens the cases, revealing previously unpublished witness statements, details of evidence, and astonishing revelations. And through her investigation, Vanessa posits the unthinkable: is it possible that the Forest City Killer is still alive and, like the notorious Golden State Killer, a simple DNA test could bring him to justice? THE FOREST CITY KILLER: A Serial Murderer, A Cold-Case Sleuth, And A Search for Justice-Vanessa Brown
In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, this city of London, Ontario, had multiple serial killers in their midst. Three have been identified but most likely there was at least one more. Billy Jensen and Paul Holes look into the murders most likely committed by this unknown killer with the help of author Vanessa Brown. More information on Vanessa Brown's book can be found here: https://brownanddickson.com/pages/the-forest-city-killer

'Cool' - Laurie Taylor traces the trajectory of the notion of ‘cool’ with Joel Dinerstein, Professor of English and American Studies at Tulane University, and author of a study which suggests it originated in American jazz clubs as a stylish defence against racism and cross fertilised with French existentialism and film noir. Also, ‘cool shades’: Vanessa Brown, Senior Lecturer in the School of Art and Design at Nottingham Trent University, explores the enduring appeal of sunglasses as the ultimate signifiers of ‘cool’ in mass culture. Lee and Vanessa Brown look at the 1966 sex slaying of Georgia Jackson at the hands of David Bodemer. Could it be related to subsequent homicides in the London-area? This week, we interview London Ontario based author Vanessa Brown on her new true crime book, 'The Forest City Killer: A serial murderer, a cold case sleuth, and a search for justice.' We learn how Vanessa uncovered the trail of a sadistic serial killer operating in the London area in the 60s & 70s through an exhaustive investigation of case files, media reports, and interviews with witnesses and victims' family members. Then, we discuss how modern techniques like DNA testing, online sleuthing, and geographic profiling could help finally catch the killer (or killers), that has escaped justice for 50 years. “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” is directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and stars Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison in the lead roles with Edna Best, George Sanders, Vanessa Brown and Natalie Wood providing excellent supporting characters. Charles Lang, the cinematographer deserves a special mention as well. And of course the moving music by Bernard Hermann. This is a wonderful movie about loss and love, life and death, hopes and dreams, and ultimately about the strength to carry on when life is throwing one difficult challenge after another at you.Bob and I dive into great detail and cover both the film and the music. This is after all the first movie of our Bernard Hermann film festival. So with that I would leave you with two thoughts, the first is to be sure and watch the movie before listening to the podcast if you can, as we do talk about the ending. And secondly, give this article on the music by Bernard Hermann a read, either before, after or during the movie. It really helped me understand the music and the use of leitmotifs, a style of film scoring that apparently Bernard Hermann only used in this film.
