Trotwood (Ohio) Madison head coach Jeff Graham played the game at the highest level during his playing career. Over the past several years, Graham has stayed connected to the game, coaching many young and talented players over the years. In 2019, Graham led the Rams to the OHSAA Football Division III state championship. With success, Graham and the Rams saw their conference push them aside, forcing them to become independent and play one of the most demanding schedules in Ohio. Week One saw the Rams take on defending Division II state champion Winton Woods, then an always challenging and undefeated Kettering Fairmont team followed in Week Two, both losses for the Rams. If the sting of starting off 0-2 wasn't nasty enough, Graham and the Rams followed up in Week Three, playing up two levels and taking on Division One state runner-up Springfield. While no head coach wants to see his team start 0-3, Graham refused to allow his players to hang their heads going into their Week Four match-up against Kettering Alter. After some early game struggles, Graham and the Rams started to find their groove and used a solid second half to come back for a 26-24 win over the Knights. DBHuddle spoke with the Rams head coach about his young squad and why the future is bright for one of Ohio's top programs over the last decade. I'm your host, Arch Grieve, and today Friday, which means it's time for your weekly news roundup, where I read the news so you don't have to. A lot happened recently, including the RTA announcing free weekend summer rides, Gettysburg Avenue being put on a “road diet,” and more. And as always there's a lot going on this weekend and beyond, including Pride Month celebrations, so stay tuned for the news in just a moment.    And now for last week's news in Dayton:   Dayton City Commissioners spoke out recently against Mike Dewine and the Ohio Statehouse for legislation that legislators passed recently and that is now awaiting Governor Dewine's signature. House Bill 99 is a bill that would allow school teachers to be armed in school settings with as little as 24 hours of training. The commissioners also spoke out against past legislation that Mike Dewine has already signed into law, including a “stand your ground” law and legislation that enabled people to conceal carry without a permit. The commissioners pointed out that in the wake of the tragic Oregon District shootings three years ago, the governor promised to pass common-sense gun laws, which never materialized.    Well if you're looking to save some money on gas, then you might want to hear about this next story. The Greater Dayton RTA is going to be offering free rides on weekends over the summer starting tomorrow, June 4th, and going through September 4th. The RTA is offering free rides on both its fixed-route buses and para-transit vehicles, and RTA officials say they hope that the cost of providing the free weekend rides will be offset by increased ridership, particularly as gas prices continue to increase. For more information, visit iriderta.org.   If you remember last week I let you know about the curfew sweep that police would be doing last weekend. Well, the numbers are in and the police caught zero juveniles breaking curfew during last Friday's sweep, which police are touting as a success. The sweep primarily took place downtown but also included parks where juveniles are regularly observed congregating in.    Well, the City of Dayton will be putting Gettysburg Avenue on a, quote, “diet,” to help reduce what city leaders call “automobile circus acts” and “hooning,” which is apparently a word used to describe reckless vehicle operation maneuvers like drifting and burnouts and the like. The diet consists of shrinking the roadway and decreasing the number of traffic lanes, which city leaders say is larger than it needs to be based on Dayton's current population. The changes would be reminiscent of what the city did to the area of Brown St. near UD and the city plans to take action immediately while simultaneously seeking funding for more long-term fixes. The city argues that the changes are needed because, since 2015, a 3.5-mile stretch of Gettysburg has been the location of over 1400 accidents, 59 serious injuries, and 10 fatalities, including a recent one that killed four people. The city is going to be seeking public input before making any decisions on permanent changes and plans to apply for a state infrastructure bank loan to help fund the project.    The City of Dayton is planning to use some of its American Plan Rescue Act funds, $150,000 to be exact, to help fund a pre-school on wheels program. The program, known as Pop Up Preschool, seeks to provide preschool options for areas of the city that are preschool deserts. Kimberly Jarvis, director of the On Purpose Academy and Mentoring Center, which runs the Pop Up Preschool program, says she has the teachers that will be needed for the program but needs help with funding to convert RVs into mobile classrooms, which would serve between 9-12 students at a time and travel to two locations over the course of the school day. To learn more about the program, visit www.opamc.net/pup.   In other childcare-related news, the City of Dayton is spending over half a million dollars to help consolidate four childcare centers in East Dayton under one roof. The $11 million building is being constructed on the site of the former Lincoln School in the Twin Towers neighborhood by Miami Valley Child Development Centers and will be known as the Lincoln Hill Child and Family Center. The school will serve 250 students, at least 90% of whom meet federal poverty guidelines. The MVCDC received the funds through moneys that the city got from a community development block grant and were awarded them through a competitive grant process. The new building will have 14 classrooms, office space, a community training space, and a full-service commercial kitchen.    Well now that the Ohio redistricting process mess continues to result in anti-democratic outcomes, with the Dayton Daily News reporting recently that the new district boundaries will mean that some incumbents will be running unopposed in spite of the fact that the partisan voter makeup of those districts has changed due to the fact that Ohio's filing deadline has not been extended or re-opened since candidates filed their petitions in February. Since then, the districts have changed greatly in some instances. For example, Riverside recently went from a Republican-leaning district to the one represented by Dayton's state representative, Willis Blackshear, Jr. Similarly, the district represented by former Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer added Trotwood and other Democrat-leaning areas and now favors Democrats, but he will be running unopposed in the general as no Democrat filed in what used to be a Republican-leaning district. Secretary of State LaRose says there's nothing he can do and that any changes in filing deadlines are set by law and must be made by the Ohio Statehouse. However, candidates may still file as independents without party affiliation if they do so by 4pm on August 1st, the day before the rescheduled primary will take place. Montgomery County Democratic Party Chairman Mark Owens called the claim by Republicans that there isn't time to re-open the process, quote, “ridiculous,” and called for a 10-day window for candidates to file in the newly redrawn districts. You can find out about your district by visiting findmydistrict.ohiosos.gov.    Well if you're vegan, or just trying to reduce your meat consumption, you'll want to hear this news. There's a new vegan restaurant opening up at the 2nd Street Market called Vegan It IZ Eats, which is owned by Dayton native Rhea Adkins. It will have a rotating breakfast and lunch menu including things like jack fruit tacos, coconut bacon grilled cheese, chai french toast, and more. It will also carry meal prep options, granola, seasoning blends, nut milks, dressings, sauces, and a cookbook. You can visit veganitizeats.com for more information.    A new crisis center for those experiencing mental health or substance abuse crises is going to be opening up in the Carillon neighborhood here in Dayton later this year if all goes to plan. The Crisis Now Receiving Center, which is a project of RI International and the Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug, and Mental Health Services (or ADAMHS), will open at Elizabeth Place. Individuals in crisis can call Montgomery County at 833-580-2255 to receive support.    And finally, if you're like me and enjoy a good local craft beer, you'll want to check out my friend Alexis Larsen's article in the Dayton Daily News from this past Sunday's paper, which talks about the Dayton Ale Trail. There are 31 local breweries in and around Dayton that participate in the trail, and all you need to do to start is visit one of them and pick up your Dayton Ale Trail passport, which you can collect stamps in by visiting each of the breweries on the list and purchasing a beer. Dayton's breweries are on the list, as well as surrounding ones like Eudora, Lucky Star, and many more. Once you've visited all of the other 30 breweries, you can collect your final beer at the Yellow Cab Tavern in Dayton, where you'll be awarded a 16 oz. stainless steel pint glass. I've never made it to all of them in one year, but I think I'll make that a goal this year, so I hope you'll join me and maybe I'll see you around at one of them this summer.    That's it for last week's news, and now here's what's going on in Dayton this weekend and beyond:   The Dayton Jewish Film Festival kicked off yesterday, June 2nd, at the Dayton Art Institute with a screening of “That Orchestra With the Broken Instruments.” The remaining films, however, will be screened at The Neon movie theater downtown, with films running now through June 26th. Housing advocates in the Dayton region explain that the legacies of redlining persist today as the region's Black and minority residents continue to face disparities in housing. This episode explores the legacies of past polices and modern discrimination with two local stories. Dayton-area residents of color, particularly in minority neighborhoods, are denied home loans at higher rates than their white counterparts over half a century after the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was intended to level the playing field. Norman and Zaria Scearce, an African American couple living in Trotwood recently attempted to buy a bigger home in Trotwood but the loan did not go through. Norman Scearce tell his story in this latest episode. Also in this episode, host Jordan Laird spoke to Carolyn and Larry Williams. The African American couple have poured thousands of dollars into upkeeping and renovating their Westwood home over the decades but their house has not appreciated in value when adjusting for inflation.

She then went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Dayton. In this episode… What's preventing you from pursuing your doctoral degree? It may seem impossible to go back to school and earn your degree when you also have a family, career, and the pressures of everyday life to juggle. As Dr. Russell Strickland says, there's never really a “good” time to go back to school and earn your degree—so why not start now? While working as a high school teacher, Dr. Reva Cosby, the Superintendent of Trotwood-Madison City Schools, realized that she had more to offer to her community, but didn't have the title to do so. Because of this, she decided to go back to school and pursue her doctoral degree at the age of 40. Dr. Cosby ended up completing the dissertation process and earning the coveted title, all while working a full-time job and raising her children. Join Dr. Russell Strickland in this episode of An Unconventional Life as he talks with Dr. Reva Cosby about her journey from working as a high school teacher to earning her doctoral degree and becoming a successful superintendent. Stay tuned as Dr. Cosby discusses the reason she pursued her degree, her advice for students that are currently working on their dissertation, and the impact that her new title and expertise has made on the lives of her students.

The day after the Memorial Day tornadoes ripped through the Dayton suburb of Trotwood, Ashley Browning was out in the neighborhood handing out bags of sandwiches, chips, cookies and water to the victims. And for the following two weeks she worked out of a dance studio, accepting and handing out donated items. Today, the Wright State University employee and student is operating a more permanent distribution center called Heartbeat. “I want it to be a space where people can come and get those personal hygiene items, household items, cleaning supplies,” said Browning. “Also they can get a hot meal because people are still staying in hotels and they’re not eating hot meals.” Giving back has become part of Browning’s life journey. Trump doubles-down on 'low IQ' attacks on Biden, targets past support of 1994 crime bill President Trump on Monday did not let criticism over his siding with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in an attack on 2020 Democratic front-runner Joe Biden muzzle him. In fact, just before beginning his journey home from his trip to Japan, the president doubled-down on his attacks on the former vice president. “Kim Jong Un made a statement that Joe Biden is a low-IQ individual based on his record…I think I agree with him on that,” Trump said at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Trump slammed Biden's support of a controversial 1994 crime bill, tweeting that he hasn't "apologized" for backing it.Trump claimed "anyone associated" with the bill "will not have a chance of being elected." The president tweeted that his own criminal justice reform legislation - the First Step Act - "had tremendous support" and "fixed" problems in the law Biden championed. The 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, signed by then-President Bill Clinton, was seen by many analysts as the culmination of efforts to fight violent crime. However, in the decades that followed, critics blamed the law for an increase in prison populations, among other problems.Trump not bothered by recent North Korea missile testsPresident Trump, in his press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Abe, said he didn’t think North Korea's recent short-range missile launches were a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, despite his advisers' beliefs otherwise. Trump said perhaps North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was trying to get attention. Both Abe and Trump national security adviser John Bolton agree North Korea violated U.N. resolutions and that sanctions must remain in place. In addition, Trump appeared to tone down his rhetoric on Iran and said the U.S. is not seeking a regime change just a week after he warned Tehran that a confrontation between the two countries would lead to its demise. At least 5 million in Ohio left without power after 'large and dangerous' tornadoA powerful storm system that included at least one tornado considered "large and dangerous"passed through Ohio late Mondaythat resulted in widespread damage, including 70,000 power outages currently affecting over 5 million people. Social media accounts claim to show a massive funnel cloud as it hit near Trotwood, Ohio, 8 miles northwest of Dayton. At least half a dozen communities from eastern Indiana through central Ohio suffered damage from the storm system, according to the National Weather Service. There have been no immediate reports of injuries or deaths.Japan stabbing attack leaves at least two dead, 16 hurtA knife-wielding man screaming "I will kill you!" attacked commuters -- mostly schoolchildren -- waiting at a suburban Tokyo bus stop during the morning rush hour Tuesday, killing at least two people, a schoolgirl and an adult man, according to Reuters, and wounding at least 16 others before he killed himself. Three of the injuries were serious while the others were not life-threatening,according to an official at the Kawasaki city office. Officials told NHK the suspect, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, attacked people near Noborito Park in a residential area of Kawasaki City. The number of wounded reportedly included 13 children. Television footage showed emergency workers giving first aid to people inside a tent set up on the street, and police and other officials carrying the wounded to ambulances.Avenatti's case of the Terrible TuesdayEmbattled attorney Michael Avenatti will have a busy day in Manhattan federal court Tuesday afternoon -- but as a defendant, not as counsel. Avenatti, 49, is scheduled to be arraigned on charges that he stole nearly $300,000 from adult film actress Stormy Daniels, the client who rocketed him to national prominence. Approximately three-and-a-half hours later, Avenatti is scheduled to be arraigned on charges that he tried to extort up to $25 million from athletic apparel giant Nike by threatening to expose claims that the shoemaker paid off high school basketball players to steer them to Nike-sponsored colleges. If convicted on all counts, Avenatti could face a total of 69 years in prison. Avenatti repeatedly has denied any wrongdoing and is expected to plead not guilty to all charges.NRA-opposed measure tests Texas governorA Texas gun storage safety measure added to a massive spending bill sets up a political test for Gov. Greg Abbott as the legislation heads to his desk, the Associated Press reported. The $1 million measure was added late Sunday by budget negotiators -- most of whom are Republicans. The bill was approved Sunday night by the GOP-controlled legislature. The campaign for safe home gun storage, just one part of the much broader $250 billion state budget, was fiercely opposed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and gun-rights activists. Abbott, a Republican who has line-item veto power in regard to the budget, must decide whether to nix the measure or ignore pressure from some gun rights groups and approve it.TODAY'S MUST-READSPrivately funded organization 'We Build the Wall' starts construction of border barrier in El Paso area.Trump seizes on NYU professor’s tweet to push change of libel laws.Remembering Major League Baseball great Bill Buckner.MINDING YOUR BUSINESSNew auto giant? Fiat Chrysler wants to merge with Renault.China shouldn't ban Apple, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei says.Car depreciation by model: How quickly these popular brands lose value.Demand Free Speech Reception: Trump Hotel July 3 w/@RogerStonehttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/demand-free-speech-reception-trump-hotel-july-3-wroger-stone-tickets-62233759851MagaGala.comEveryone I hope to see you in DC in July - Here's your chance to mingle with Roger Stone and other VIPs (TBA) at Trump Hotel July 3 - Demand Free Speech Reception Fundraiser 9:30pm - 11:30pm 2 hours open bar and great food!
