Welcome to another episode of the OCR Underground Show.  This podcast is designed to help you train for your next OCR or hybrid race without destroying your body in the process.  After taking the summer off, I am back with some more great tips for you. I finally got back into racing and did the Spartan Sprint in Temecula (Pala) last month.  Now I am getting ready for the DEKA Strong and Mile coming this weekend at my studio. In this episode I share one of the most underutilized ergogenic aids for endurance performance.  This is heat acclimation training.  I will talk about what it is, how it can help you, and some research on this powerful tool. Since this was my first race I have done in a while, I thought it would be a good topic to discuss how to pick up your training again after time off.  You might have had an injury or just backed away from training for a while.  If you want to find the most efficient way to get back into OCR shape check out this episode. Today I want to share a personal story with you. It's about my journey with fitness, overcoming obstacles, and finding a deeper connection with God. So let's dive in. Fitness has been such a significant part of my life for the past 12 to 15 years. It all started with my first Spartan Race, the Spartan Sprint, over a decade ago. I remember feeling incredibly nervous before that race. I mean, it was just three miles, but there were obstacles everywhere. I had trained hard, even joined a fitness program to learn the proper techniques for overcoming the various obstacles. We attended multiple training sessions before attempting the race. And let me tell you, it wasn't easy. Over the years, fitness has become a central aspect of my journey. It's not just about staying in shape; it's about striving for high performance in all areas of my life. The lessons I've learned through fitness have had a profound impact on my relationships, my work, and my spiritual connection. There's something special about those long training runs when I feel a deep connection to God, receiving guidance from the Holy Spirit. It's where I find solace and seek counsel for the challenges I face.   Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are. - Pope Francis   Blessings on your path,  Rev. Freshly back from NY after visiting family and running the Spartan Sprint in Bethel, NY.  This was the site of Woodstock back in 1969.  It was a first time at this location and hopefully they will continue having it here.  It was a great venue and a fast course.  Looking forward to more great Spartan Races the rest of this year. In this episode I share some insights on preparing for racing at altitude.  While many are concerned with finding ways to improve performance at higher altitudes, sometimes the focus should be on to simply prepare your body for the increase stress it is about to go through and avoid altitude sickness.  I share some of the most important strategies to consider when preparing for a high altitude race. In my research review, I share an interesting study on caffeine.  Caffeine is one of the most studied ergogenic aid.  It has been shows to be beneficial for some (although not all) for endurance events.  In this research we specifically look at using caffeine when exercising in hot temperatures. In this episode Coach's Corner, I have on SGX Coach Rose Dey. Rose has a background in Krav Maga, boxing and gymnastics. She has been in the fitness industry for 25 years coaching and managing facilities in New York, New Jersey and North Carolina. She is a NASM certified Personal Trainer, Precision Nutrition Level 1 coach, Spartan SGX and Deka coach with specialties in senior fitness and obesity. She is currently the Spartan and Deka Coach at Aestus Fitness in Fuquay-Varina, NC and will be the Health and Fitness Science Instructor at Johnston Community College starting Fall 2021. She started Obstacle Course racing in 2011 and obtained Spartan Race podium spots in both Master Elite and Age Group categories, as well as earning a spot in the Spartan Elite World Championship Series in 2016. She owned and operated her own facility specializing in functional strength/conditioning  and race preparation for 6 years in New Jersey before moving to NC where she was introduced to Crossfit. She has just earned her mark with Deka Strong as a 4th place holder in Age Group. Rose's passion for fitness starts at home where she raised 3 children who have healthy fitness habits. She believes in a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition at its core. Her passion is seeing others succeed in accomplishing goals and believes a person's mindset is their greatest asset. “BELIEVE that you can, TRAIN like you should, and CONQUER your goals. Coach Rose shares some great insight into training, specifically overcoming obstacles and challenges.  She shares her incredible comeback story and shares how you can move past challenges in your way.   Full Show Notes:  www.ocrunderground.com/episode-80

On the Zoom today is Andrew Monroe. We talk about his first book, living in Amarillo Texas, motivation, traveling the USA, and I ask him what a WISP is. Andrew is an Indie writer with a semi successful book, A Leaf and Pebble. His book hasn't topped the charts yet, but it was only published at the very end of 2019. He gained expert experience in the startup world, having helped run an internet service provider in the WISP industry and then cashed out after growing it to $4 million/year in revenue. Apart from writing the next book, Andrew spends a fair amount of time as a marketing expert for his own company, Axe & Bow.   As an adventure and fitness enthusiast, he has spent time free climbing dozens of buildings, peaks, and everything in between, earning multiple Spartan Race Trifectas, and placing in the top 20 at a Spartan Sprint in Dallas. He's even experimented a little with biohacking. Andrew has a background education in Global Affairs with a minor in Japanese and admittedly spends too much time playing tennis. Christopher Wolff has an amazing story. Here is a summary in his words On September 11, 2001 I was in NYC where I missed my ferry which was supposed to take me across the harbor to have breakfast inside the windows of the world at the top of the World Trade Center. This day was reason I enlisted in the Air Force. During my 6th deployment, my aircraft that was flying over Afghanistan underwent an RPG attack that it shouldn’t have survived from. But it did and I returned home safely and intact. Upon returning home, the Air Force required us to receive our annual flu shot. The vaccine paralyzed me from the neck down. I was a C4 quadriplegic for 2 years. It has been 7 years since the beginning of my paralysis and I have worked tirelessly to overcome my obstacles and am now a T12 Paraplegic with enough motor function in my upper legs to be able to walk with forearm crutches. I started working out at the Adaptive Training Foundation in January of 2016 and I have gained the ability to walk further distances. On October 29th, 2017 I competed with my Adaptive Training Foundation Team and we completed a Spartan Sprint in 4:30. That was the longest distance to date that I have walked (Which was over 1 mile). I’m looking forward to many more obstacle courses and physical challenges. Chris just completed his Spartan Trifecta with The help of @Operation Enduring Warrior. It as an honor to have you on our show Chris

The OCR Underground Show provides you with everything you need to maximize your training for your best race.  In this episode I share some great insight on how you can have a smarter training plan.  Hoping to redeem my Big Bear race, I am off to race the Spartan Sprint in Minnesota.  At least there is no snow in the forecast.   In the Inside Mike's Mind segment of the show, I explain the truth about cramping during a race.  Is it as simple as dehydration or electrolyte loss?  Most likely not.  Tune in to see how you can stop cramping before they start.   We have a great race recap with Jordan Boyd from Australia.  He gives us a great recap of the 24Hr OCR Enduro Championships.   In my research review, I discuss why you need to disperse your training intensity and the value of low intensity training.   And we have a great announcement about a new sponsor of the show.  Venga CBD is our newest partner.  I orignial interview their CEO Jay O'hare.  After chatting with him about the benefits of CBD and how it can help the endurance athlete specifically, I decided to give it a try.  I was incredibly impressed with their products and I am excited to have them in support of the show.   In this episodes interview I chat with Jay and gives a great summary of what CBD is and how it may benefit you in your endurance performance.   All this plus much more!   Full shownotes at:  www.ocrunderground.com/episode-62

What was harder the Spartan Sprint in Vegas or waking up Sunday after a race and night out on the strip?  It is a close call but I think I will take running a race no matter how hard over waking up early with a hangover. This past weekend we had a blast racing and spending a fun weekend in Vegas.  It started out with a fun visit to Maddam Tussaud's Wax Museum.  You can see from the pic above we had a blast with this.  One thing I absolutely love about doing all of these races is getting to travel with my wife and have fantastic experiences with her. In this podcast we do cover the Spartan Race out in Vegas, but also I share some insight into Pain versus Source of Pain.  When your knee is bugging you should really be focusing on how to fix your knee or should ou be more worried about what caused the knee issue in the first place? In my research review, I discuss a great study on recovery.  Specifically active versus passive recovery.  Doesn't it matter which you do?  Well if you want to improve endurance and power then it absolutely does.  Listen in to learn more. And finally in my coach's interview I have on a very special secret guest.  They were a little hesitant to be recording for the podcast so I am going to leave it as a mystery for you.  You will just have to listen in to find out who it was. But we discuss our post race thoughts on the Vegas Sprint, how to find time for workouts when life gets in the way, some of our favorite 20 minute workouts, how to get started when you just don't feel like working out, and much more.   For complete shownotes visit:  www.ocrunderground.com/episode-59

Two Quick Energy Boosts - SPARTAN HEALTH ep 011

The Hard Way w/ Joe De Sena

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2019 2:26

We’re all pressed for time and need efficient, quick tools to increase energy and help us optimize our busy days. Here are two simple techniques that can provide rapid but effective ways of giving you a “wake up call.” One will give your brain a boost and the other will support your core for stability and injury prevention. Let’s engage your mind and energize your body whether it be for your next Spartan Sprint or Super! WHAT WE TALK ABOUT: a. Today’s world is more and more demanding. Some of us have two jobs, or maybe you’re taking night classes after work, starting families and raising children the list goes on and on… b. In this podcast I’m going to talk about what can aid in increasing our energy and helping us fight fatigue. I’ll discuss two different sensory stimuli: one olfactory (your sense of smell) and the other is a stretch which is physical but also engages your sense of sight. - First, your sense of smell: it’s a fruit, an essential oil, herbal tea: That is Grapefruit: it’s a juicy, bittersweet citrus fruit that’s a hybrid fruit created from the pomelo and the orange. It’s a good source of Vit C, lots of other vitamins and minerals but important for our chat right now…it energizes the senses! Grapefruit oil or its essence upregulates the CNS and stimulates the brain. Wakes us up! c. Second quick energy boost: Stretch Your Hip Flexors - This often forgot about muscle group will not only energize the body but it’s one of the most important muscle groups to help prevent falls and injury and improve balance. Helps ensure stability of the lower body, allows you to bend at the waist and bring your knee toward your chest -Sitting for extended periods shortens and tightens them. You should stand from your chair every hour to stretch them. - Simple stretches: lunges, if you have more space you can do a bridge (laying down, feet flat on the floor, arms flat at sides, push up using your glutes, thighs, and back. KEY TERMS & IDEAS: Combat low energy and fatigue with quick, simple tools that you can use anytime by engaging your mind and body for an effective result. Engage your sense of smell: use Grapefruit essential oil to stimulate and “wake up” when you feel sluggish. Mental Focus in 5 Easy Steps - SPARTAN HEALTH ep 005

The Hard Way w/ Joe De Sena

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 16, 2018 5:13

On Spartan Health we’ve talked about how important your senses can be in terms of your cognitive function and physical health. In this episode, we take a deep dive into how you can tap into your sensory system as a powerful tool for optimal mental and physical performance. SImple techniques that can get you ready and set for you next Spartan Sprint, Super, or Beast! WHAT WE COVER:   We all experience it now and then. You want to focus, get in “the zone” but you’re having a tough time. Here’s 5 easy steps that will help you get centered fast. Each of them is a different tool or technique and each activates a different sensory pathway. What do I mean by that? Let’s say you want your brain to focus or concentrate. An effective way to do that is to send a signal on every one of your sensory pathways (your sense of sight, touch, sound, taste and smell). Your sensory system is your only connection to the outside world and it’s pretty powerful. It works 24/7 sending signals to your brain and you’re deciding (often subconsciously) if it’s a positive or negative stimulus and your body and mind respond accordingly. So, being in tune and mindful of your sensory system can carry you a long way to better focus and getting your “game face on.” What to do:       Sight: now this first one is both sight but it’s also something physical. It’s a yoga pose: called tree pose. The challenge of tree pose is maintaining your balance on one leg. Unlike most poses, this one requires eyes open, which helps cultivate focus. Select a point for your gaze and hold that it will help alignment of your posture. When practicing, it helps to imagine your body as a tree and that the foot you are balanced on are the roots and your leg is the trunk. Regular practice of this pose improves concentration, balance and coordination.       Touch: your sense of touch can be engaged by acupressure. Acupressure unlike acupuncture does not use needles but, instead stimulates (according to TCM) certain active point locations on the body can elicit a response.  Such as, improved focus. There’s a number of points you can use but here’s an easy one: It’s called Governing Vessel or GV 20. It’s on the crown of your head between the cranial bones to find the point make a line with both fingers from the back of your ears and they’ll meet at the top of your head where there’s a slight hollow. That’s GV20. Gently rub or stimulate the point for a minute or two. This can be repeated as needed.       Sound: Sound and Music can be powerful. The types of music to listen to that aid concentration are typically songs with smooth melodies and a peaceful harmony with minimal lyrics are the types of sounds that help the mind calm and allow the brain to focus.       Taste: this is an going to be a tea blend. Both green tea and ginseng can help the brain focus. You can use one or the other or combine both for an extra punch. Green tea has a relatively low amount of caffeine but that caffeine is coupled with another compound found in tea, L-theanine. These two together help calm but focus your brain. Another option or a great addition is ginseng – this herb has several different types and it’s the panax ginseng that can help improve aspects of working memory and focus.       Last up, smell; your sense of smell or olfaction offers one of the most direct sensory connections to the brain. So for this sense aromatherapy but I’m talking about the actual herbs in the form of essential oil not synthetic mimics. Two to try: rosemary and basil. Inhaling the scent of these herbs has a stimulatory effect on the brain and be uplifting. You only need to inhale for one to two minutes. You can repeat several times throughout the day for a quick boost.   Ok, lots of stuff covered here let me give a quick review of key points for each sense to be treated: 1.Sight: Tree Pose Touch: acupressure point GV20 Sound: minimal lyrics, a peaceful harmony, pick something you enjoy Taste: Green tea and /or Ginseng Sense of Smell:  Rosemary and Basil. Now, get in touch with your sensory system and you’ll be amazed as to how you get in tune and in sync with your body and mind. KEY TERMS & IDEAS: Consciously and unconsciously your body responds to sensory stimuli around you. Your 5 senses are your connection to the outside world. They take in environmental stimuli 24/7. To get the best response from your brain to improve mental focus: use your entire sensory system - sight, touch, sound, taste, and smell. Stimulate each sense to improve mental focus: Touch - acupressure, Sight - yoga poses (provides both a  physical reality and visual aspects), Sound - minimal lyrics, pick something you like, Taste - Green Tea and Ginseng, Smell - invigorating rosemary and basil To be “all in” for your next Tyrolean Traverse, Sled Drag, or Atlas Carry - tap into your senses!         LINKS & RESOURCES: Follow Nada on LInkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/nada-milosavljevic-35b502b9/ Sage Tonic www.sagetonic.com Sage Tonic on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sagetonic/   “View through a window may influence recovery from surgery” Science. 1984 Apr 27;224(4647):420-1. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6143402 “The potential of positive places: senses, brain, and spaces” Intelligent Building International 2010, 2: 218-228. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3763/inbi.2010.0042       “Integrative health services in school health clinics” Adolesc Psychiatry 2015 Apr; 5(2): 132–139. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5425651/ “Internal and external imagery on sports performance among swimmers” European  Academic Research Feb 2015 Vol. II, Issue 11. http://euacademic.org/UploadArticle/1397.pdf SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/SpartanUpShow YouTube: http://bit.ly/SpartanUpYT Google Play: http://bit.ly/SpartanUpPlay   FOLLOW SPARTAN UP: Spartan Up on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/spartanuppodcast/ Spartan Up on Twitter https://twitter.com/SpartanUpPod   CREDITS: Producer: Marion Abrams, Madmotion, llc. This past Saturday, June 17th of 2017, I completed my first Spartan Race. I did the Spartan Sprint with several family members and friends and it was just an amazing experience. And it wasn’t amazing to me because everything went smoothly and as planned. It was amazing because it was really, really hard and I did it. The community, the comraderie and the overall energy of the event was something that really needs to be experienced. As I was heading into the last week of training and through the day after I completed the race I was reflecting back and thinking about what I learned through the whole experience and how this goal changed me. Why Would I Sign Up for a Spartan Race? First I have to thank my sister Kerri who on Thanksgiving Day in 2016 came up to talk to me as she and her family were getting ready to leave. She announced to me that she had read my book Accomplished and had made a commitment. I was overjoyed because one thing I’ve learned for my own happiness is not to expect family members to be as into my career and business as I am. Any support I get from them is great. So when my sister made this announcement I was touched and I asked what she committed to. During the day her husband had been talking about his recent experience doing the Spartan Stadium Sprint at Fenway Park so I should not have been surprised when Kerri declared that she was going to do her first Spartan Race in June. Caught up in the moment I blurted out, “I’ll run it with you!” Being a woman of integrity, even after the reality of what I had just done had started to settle in over the next few days I got online and registered myself for the race.  And knowing what I know about big scary goals, and my own need for external accountability, in the next month I told anyone who would listen that I was running my first Spartan Race in June. The other reality was I was getting out of shape. I ran a marathon in 2006 and managed to continue to work out with my personal trainer, run and do boot camp classes and yoga even after starting my business in 2010. However, my time and resources were seriously depleted when I was preparing to launch this podcast. In 2015 I was no longer working out with my personal trainer and getting to the boot camp classes and yoga felt like too much of a time commitment. Pair that with eating on the go and resorting to a cheese and cracker dinner each night because I didn’t have the desire or energy to prepare and clean up a home cooked meal. Training for this race forced me to take my health and fitness more seriously, to get in the workout even when I felt there wasn’t enough time and to say no to things that are not serving me, my health, my money or my peace of mind. That’s still a work in progress. That means I need to set another really big goal to support me in this. How I've Used Spartan Racing to Conquer Fear and More Making the time, doing the workouts, and feeling intimidated have not been easy. But it has been good. My life is more balanced and I am healthier and more confident as a result. In my “reflecting back” process the word “fear” kept coming to me. I learned a lot about fear and had many intimate up-close and personal moments with my own fears since beginning this. There were fears of sacrificing time in my business to make time for training – the very fear that caused me to be out of shape in the first place. There were mortal fears of getting injured by falling, pulling a muscle, twisting an ankle, etc. Then there were fears of looking stupid, out of shape, intimidated, and weak. And get this one: the fear of feeling afraid. I’m afraid to be afraid. Oh my God, that one landed like a boulder on my chest and the consequences of this fear are still revealing themselves. I don’t want to be afraid to feel fear anymore so I captured for you here a few things I have learned about fear while I was training for and competing in this Spartan Race. New Ways To Increase Your Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Joe says: He's from Phoenix. She wants to know if you have any sage advice for a 52 year old athlete that you might not give a 20 or 30 year old athlete. Something different than standard training and recovery techniques, something that would give her an edge? In my response, I recommend: - - - - - Top 5 Cheap Ways To Train For Altitude Mark says: He signed up for a trip to Denali in 7 months and although he has a good amount of climbing experience, he's never done anything like this. A few questions: 1) What would you recommend in terms of training strategies - strength V endurance, and certain exercise you would definitely include? 2) How does he prepare the body for the cold that they'll see up on the mountain; 3) What you recommend for dealing with high altitude, what are the best strategies and supplements? 4) Nutrition for a trip like this with 2-3 weeks of climbing. In the past he has lost lots of weight so what are you ideas/strategies for this? Thanks so much, and he loves the podcast. In my response, I recommend: - - - - ( (use code ben to get 20% discount and free shipping) Read more - - - - - - Glutamine For Vegans Monique says: She's from Victoria, BC. She has a question about Glutamine. She's a whole-foods, plant-based vegan trying to get everything she needs in her normal diet without supplementation. She was recently having a good conversation with a friend of hers who is her local health, fitness and nutrition resource. He's not super on board with the vegan lifestyle, but he supports her and always has great suggestions for how she can maximize nutrition in day to day life. His primary concern is Glutamine because she is focusing on fitness in a big way. As a conditionally essential amino acid this is something she doesn't get in a normal whole-foods, plant-based eating plan. She'd love to know your take on the situation, whether plant foods can be a sustainable source or Glutamine or whether she will need to supplement, and any other advice you have. She absolutely loves the show and is grateful in advance for you advice. In this mini episode I talk about a short review of the L.A. Spartan Sprint at Lake Castaic.  This is a quick episode with a few strategies to help you with your training.   My big tip for this week is how to approach his during the race.  There is a very important difference between training on hills and how you attack them during a race. One of the biggest mistakes I saw at the Lake Castaic Sprint was Spartans sprinting up hills and then just destroying themselves for the rest of the race.  In this episode I discuss how you want to approach hills correctly and some things to focus on while you are heading up the mountain. Obstacle immunity became a kind of obsession for Mark Webb after attempting, and failing, the Death Race for the third time. First he overhauled his mental toughness, and next his physical, then came redemption and the iconic finisher's skull. His growth as a human became all too obvious after he lost his leg below the knee in a freak motorcycle accident. Just days before the accident he completed a Spartan Sprint with his young son. In retrospect, these races seemed like a dress rehearsal by comparison, but by now Webb was well tooled to take on the next challenge with grace and an indomitable spirit.Watch the video episode at http://spartanuppodcast.com   Lessons:1. You can’t quit life. You only get one shot at it so you must keep going.2. You can’t stop doing the things you love in life because there is risk. 3. Recognize that you will have days that you don’t want to do your workout so just do a small amount and more often than not you will achieve your goal.4. Aim as high as you can for a goal and then chip away with small increments.  Panel Notes:Joe Desena: How would you do if you lost a limb? Would you be upset? Would you get angry? Could you just roll with what life throws your way? Mark and I saw each other just a day before he had a tragic accident.  This guy is more twisted steel than a Harley Davidson. If he doesn't give you inspiration, I don't know what will.Col. Nye: The student becomes the teacher.  You can’t quit life.  Positive mindset and the injury give him motivation to set and achieve new goals. Sefra Alexandra:  What is obstacle immunity? Are you born with it or is it learned? Neuroplasticity refers to neural pathways (how information is transmitted through your body) and how they change due to behavior, thinking, or bodily injury.  Was it Mark’s history of overcoming adversity in training and races that has fortified him with such heroic resolve and resiliency in the face of a life-changing incident?
