Like tens of millions of people, Stephen Dubner thought he had a penicillin allergy. Like the vast majority, he didn't. This misdiagnosis costs billions of dollars and causes serious health problems, so why hasn't it been fixed? And how about all the other things we think we're allergic to? Something a little different from the norm today. Graham Roberts, a retired ecologist, discusses the critical state of England's rivers and the various factors contributing to their decline. He highlights the pollution from agricultural runoff and sewage discharge, the challenges posed by privatization and inadequate regulation, and the urgent need for community engagement and activism to address these issues. Graham emphasises the importance of personal responsibility in water conservation and the potential for positive change if society collectively prioritizes environmental stewardship.River Lim Action GroupRiver Lim Action on FacebookRiver TrustCONTACTthegavelandthegabble@gmail.comInstagram @thegavelandthegabbleTwitter @GavelandGabble TikTok @laughingauctioneerwww.windsorauctions.co.ukwww.lymebayauctions.co.ukABOUT THE PODCAST The Gavel and The Gabble is a podcast hosted by Harry and Simon who, together, are lucky enough to run two provincial Auction Houses in Windsor, Berkshire and Seaton, Devon. Now we know there are lots of TV shows about buying and selling antiques and collectables but we thought followers of this podcast would like to hear about what goes on behind the scenes of an actual working auction house as we go about our daily business, the characters we meet, the things we find, and the things we wished we had never found.Famed for our slightly different auctioneering style, constant chatting on the rostrum, awful jokes. Stick with us as we bunk off to record anecdotes, interview others in the industry and basically gabble on. If you enjoy the podcast, please leave us a rating. We wanted to have at least one more episode on the OCRWC weekend and we were hoping to have an athlete on the show representing Europe (since there weren't as many as previous years)! Signy Karoline Kolsto is from Norway and has somewhat recently made the jump from age group to elite after having pretty impressive results quickly in the sport. She was in Belgium to compete in the first FISO OCR World Championships but we primarily focus on Spartan Race's OCRWC. In the year where there are two OCRWCs I figured it would be great to hear from someone who went to compete in both of them! Ian Hosek has been a prominent member of USAOCR for a while now and he made the trip over to Belgium to compete in the first FISO OCR World Championships. More recently he competed in Spartan Race's OCRWC (man that's going to take some adjusting to) and took 2nd in the 3K, 2nd in the 15K, his men's relay team took 1st, and his coed team also took 1st! We talk about the differences between the two events, how he feels about his recent success in Mammoth Lakes, his feelings on the Tough Mudder Infinity in Saudi Arabia, and much more! This year may have had FISO's first OCR World Championships but we still love Adventurey's weekend long OCRWC event as well! The past couple of years we have had an episode before the event as a way to build up more anticipation for it, 2021 we had Veejay Jones on the show before event weekend, and last year we had Fran Chiorando on! Last weekend was massive for the sport of OCR in Europe! There was both Spartan European Championship as well as OCR European Championships. We followed the latter more closely and were excited to find a guest to come on the show and talk about it. Jesse de Heer finished first for the short course, second on the standard course, and his team Hang On placed first for the men's relay race! Having a pretty excellent finish in all events we figured that he would be a great guest to have on the show to talk about their events! We discuss the 3 band penalty system used, how it felt to take second to a teammate, strengths and weaknesses of European OCR, an overly complicated rule book, the seperation of Spartan and other OCR athletes, and much more! The second Savage Point Series race happened this weekend, if you missed it then watch the live stream here! We had Ryan Kempson reach out to us about wanting to come on the show and then realized that despite him being featured in 11 different episodes with in person interviews, he has never had an episode of his own! We have been big fans of both Kempson brothers with them being from New England and genuinely being down to earth people so this is making up for lost time. As the Scottish winter hit 1996/87, Rangers found a much-needed solidity that broke British records and helped to grind Celtic down in the chase for the title. The signing of Graham Roberts, an underrated near-miss in Europe, the New Year's Day grandstanding and Hamilton are all up for discussion as Martyn is joined by Andy and Alan. There are interesting exhibitions running at the Manx Museum in Douglas and the House of Manannan in Peel, and we hear of a concert in Bride. Mostly, though, we look forward to Wednesday 25th January, which happens to be Laa'l Paul. Can the weather on that day really foretell the state of the world? Wednesday 25th January sees a presentation by David Bellamy of the Manx Wildlife Trust about the Agri-Environment Scheme, and we hear from him about that. It's also the first night of three when Rushen Players will perform Peter Gordon's comedy, 'Secondary Cause of Death'. We hear from director, Catie Angus, and cast members Juan Bridson, Graham Roberts and Sharon Roberts.
Back in August Mike heard an episode of Reinforced Running with a guest that got his attention, years before that he heard him for the first time on I Am A Spartan Podcast! Now we finally had the chance to have Dave Robinson on our show! We focus on how to set goals in a way that we are more likely to achieve them, how harmful self talk can be if not done appropriately, and the importance of breathing well. The former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford says the Leeds players must think there is a chance they could secure Premier League survival when they visit Brentford, whilst the Burnley caretaker manager Mike Jackson believes his side have been in 'must-win' games all season as they prepare to face Newcastle. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes this is the most exciting time in his managerial career, as they aim to win the Premier League title on the final day of the season, should Man City slip up against Aston Villa. The former Man City goalkeeper Shay Given believes Steven Gerrard will only grow his status as a Liverpool legend if he were to do his former side a favour at the Etihad Stadium. Spurs legend Graham Roberts is confident his side have already secured a place in the Top 4, and we bring you all the fallout from Sunderland's promotion back to the Championship. By decade's end, coal-fired energy production in Craig, Colorado will be a thing of the past. What will the town look like by then? More importantly: What do residents want their home to become? How does Craig's story help us understand the energy transition as a whole? In our final episode, we look ahead to opportunities on the horizon as the town moves beyond what has defined it for so long. At the Trapper mine, for instance, land will be revegetated for deer, elk, and grouse. The Craig power station could become a testbed for hydrogen production. New businesses are already moving into downtown. All around, there are hopeful signs for a post-coal future. *Correction:* An earlier version of this episode misstated the future dates of the Craig station unit retirements. As of December 2021, Tri-State and its utility partners (where applicable) have announced that Unit 1 will retire by the end of 2025; Unit 2 will retire on September 30, 2028; and Unit 3 will retire by 2030. This timeline has not changed and remains consistent with Tri-State's originally announced schedule. Host: Kristan Uhlenbrock Guests: Ginny Brannon, Director, Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety; Wade Buchanan, director, Office of Just Transition; Duane Highley, CEO, Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association; Jennifer Holloway, director, Craig Chamber of Commerce; Kirstie McPherson; Tim Osborn, plant manager, Craig Station; Graham Roberts, environmental supervisor, Trapper Mine Coal at Sunset: A Colorado Town in Transition was created by the Institute for Science & Policy at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and produced in partnership with House of Pod. There's a popular saying in Craig, Colorado: "Coal keeps the lights on." But in 2020, the electrical utility Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association announced that it would close its coal-fired power plant and coal mines in Craig by 2030. The news was like an earthquake. Hundreds of jobs would be lost. The town now faces the prospect of massive economic disruption as its primary industry disappears. In our first episode, we travel to Craig and hear from the CEO at the center of that decision, a coal worker bracing for change, and one local business owner who's already looking for ways to reinvent the town's identity. What will Craig do now? To explore more from this episode, visit https://coalatsunset.org/episodes/episode-1-the-decision/ Host: Kristan Uhlenbrock Guests: • Duane Highley, CEO, Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association • Jennifer Holloway, Executive Director, Craig Chamber of Commerce • Kirstie McPherson, owner, 518 Wine Bar & The Find • Graham Roberts, environmental supervisor, Trapper Mining Inc. The smokehouse sits on the very edge of Connemara where the castle ruins of the Pirate Queen Granuaile (Grace O’Malley c1530-1603) look down on it from across the harbour. With the idyllic location and top-quality food combined, the Connemara Smokehouse has no shortage of visitors. Each year foodies flock to discover just how the world’s finest smoked seafood offerings are traditionally crafted by the Roberts family. Connemara Smokehouse is Ireland’s first Food Économusée, a fascinating place to visit and learn all about the traditional Irish process of handcrafting perfect smoked seafood. The Économusée element of their business promotes rural tourism and contributes to local employment within Connemara. The products that are produced in the Smokehouse have won an array of awards and have been stocked in prestigious high street leaders such as Harrods and Fortnum and Mason. After Spurs dumped Chelsea out the Carabao Cup on penalties Jose Mourinho claims his side made the Blues look ‘ordinary’, an angry fan cannot understand how Frank Lampard is still the manager of his club, Spurs legend Graham Roberts tells talkSPORT 2 that he wants Dele Alli to get ‘arrogant’ so he can return to his best performances, former Arsenal midfielder Adrian Clarke believes that the Gunners have a better manager than three other rival Premier League clubs, Adrian Durham has some home truths for the Fulham co-owner after Tony Khan apologised publicly for the performance against Aston Villa on Monday night, Newport County boss Michael Flynn claims the EFL clubs need to help themselves financially before expecting money from teams in the Premier League, talkSPORT commentator Jim Proudfoot blasts the idea of points-per-game in the Premier League should the season be curtailed, Jamie O’Hara claims that Pep Guardiola is ‘lucky’ to still be in a job with the money he’s spent on defenders at Manchester City and Hawksbee & Jacobs have news of foxes stopping play at Charlton Athletic's training ground. Continuing our series '50 Years of Chelsea' looking back, season by season, from the FA Cup winning 1970 season to present day; Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan, author of 'Eddie Mac' and formerly editor of the 'Chelsea Independent' fanzine, look back at the 1988-89 season. With Chelsea having been relegated via a play off the previous season, Chelsea supporters mood was darkened further by an FA imposed terrace ban for the first 6 matches of the new season. The lack of vocal home support seemed to affect Bobby Campbell's charges with a miserable start of 3 points in the first 6 games leaving them in 20th. But a stroke of luck in a 2-0 win away to Leeds United turned the season around.Chelsea embarked on a run of 27 games unbeaten to win the Division Two title with a record 99 points, scoring 96 goals with a three pronged attack of Kerry Dixon, Gordon Durie and Kevin Wilson. Graham Roberts had come in to Captain the side, add some steel and score a remarkable 17 goals from midfield, 12 of them penalties and was assisted by the experienced Peter Nicholas. All in all a very memorable season and as ever, never a dull moment at Chelsea in a season enthusiastically remembered by Chidge, Jonathan and Mark and embellished with clips from the 'Chelsea Special' interviews with Colin Pates, John Bumstead and Kerry Dixon. We caught up with Rangers & Spurs Legend Graham Roberts to discuss his time at Ibrox. Hear him talk about what it felt like to run on the Ibrox Pitch in that blue jersey for the first time. Graham Roberts is a coach who believes that everyone is capable of anything. He believes that to change behaviour, one just has to figure out what makes people tick, why they make the decisions that they make, and how to ignite their motivation so that they’re able to achieve their aspirations. In today’s conversation between Graham and One Year No Beer’s Jen Fairbairns, Graham talks about starting his own business and the difficult decisions that he has had to make. Graham says that beginning his own business took a lot of soul searching. At the time he was only a little over a year into being a father, and going out on his own was a leap of faith. “The real strength of humankind is the ability to be authentic with the conversation that’s going on inside.” Graham works with organizations to transform the way that they work, and with world-class athletes to help them understand what they’re capable of achieving and how to go about it. According to Graham, authenticity is the key ingredient to success, and more importantly, to happiness. He sees it as a privilege when the people he works with make the space for him to be there with them and listen to them. Graham believes that it’s important to put yourself in a position to explore and challenge your perspectives on the world. Graham himself does this by participating in adventure racing. He describes a recent event that he took part in – Rat Race’s Race to the Wreck in Namibia. He talks about the difficulty of biking through sand, the panic attack that he had on the fourth day of the race, and what he learned from the experience. Graham also talks about the advice that he would give to people who are working to give up alcohol. He talks about the importance of being fair with yourself, breaking a large goal into smaller, more manageable chunks, and why it’s important for people to understand that they do have choices. Listen in to the episode to hear more of what Graham has to say about changing behaviour and living honestly and authentically. Chelsea legend Kerry Dixon joins Stamford Chidge to try and figure out what went wrong at Watford, can it be turned around against West Brom and whether or not Antonio Conte has a future at Chelsea. In the aftermath of Chelsea's first back to back defeat of 3 goals since 1995, Stamford Chidge and Kerry Dixon discuss whether it is the players or should we question Conte’s team selection? Why didn’t he pick Giroud and why did he pick Bakayoko? Should Conte have done more to protect him, as a young player, clearly low in confidence? With the Press full of speculation and hype; should we ignore it and look at the bigger picture: injuries; transfer shortcomings; in 4th, FA Cup and Champions League and the fact that Conte has said he wants to stay Has Conte lost the plot or have the Board undermined him? Would Kerry rather he was given an opportunity to turn it round or is the relationship between Conte, the Board and the players irretrievably broken. With West Brom on Monday, Chelsea need a win and a performance and while Kerry is confident that the players are good enough to deliver this, right now they are just as likely to flop. Kerry believes that the absence of two players with presence and leadership can make all the difference to a team short of confidence and in free fall, in his day when Graham Roberts and Peter Nicholas arrived they turned a team who had been relegated in to champions in the space of 10 months.
