In rural southeastern New Mexico, bank CEO and varsity bowling coach Ken Clayton often takes his team on 500-mile one-day roundtrips for bowling tournaments. For Clayton, that commitment to going the distance is also what community banking is about. On the latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast — presented by R&T Deposit Solutions — Clayton discusses what makes community banks like his tick. And as chair of ABA's Government Relations Council, he also talks about ABA's legislative and regulatory priorities for the year ahead, including tax reform and Subchapter S, regulatory challenges like the Section 1071 final rule, the SAFER Banking Act, credit card interchange policy and more. For Clayton's 22-employee bank, policy challenges hit home in a challenging way since he and his CFO also share duties as the bank's compliance officers. “As a banker, don't just sit at home and say, ‘Gee, I wish this was different,'” Clayton says. “Get involved. It's very rewarding, not to mention that it helps your customer and it helps your community.” Clayton also discusses his own career journey in banking, his home community of Artesia and his approach to developing leaders within his bank. This week, leaders from across the Euro-Atlantic region met in Washington, D.C., for the annual NATO Summit. The security pact turned 75 this year, and its 32 members are facing challenges on multiple fronts, from Russia's continuing bombardment of Ukraine, now in its third year, to the growing relationship between Russia and China and NATO member Hungary's outreach to both. And that's not to mention issues such as the impacts of technology, especially artificial intelligence, and questions of how many allies are reaching the intended threshold for their own defense spending of at least 2% of GDP.And all of this comes amid the uncertainty of a looming U.S. election in which former President Donald Trump has signaled he would distance Washington's support for the alliance, and amid President Joe Biden's struggles to persuade supporters that he still has the physical and mental stamina – at age 81 – to serve another term. What are the key takeaways from the Summit and how might it influence security concerns on both sides of the Atlantic? Co-hosting today is Just Security's Washington Senior Editor, Viola Gienger, and joining the show to discuss this year's NATO summit and unpack its implications is Ambassador Daniel Fried. During his 40 years in the Foreign Service, Ambassador Fried played a central role in implementing U.S. policy in Europe after the fall of the Soviet Union. In several senior roles, including as Assistant Secretary of State for Europe, Ambassador Fried helped craft the policy of NATO enlargement to Central European countries and NATO-Russia relations. Earlier, he served as the U.S. Ambassador to Poland. He is currently the Weiser Family Distinguished Fellow at the Atlantic Council, which co-hosted the annual NATO Public Forum with other think tanks on the sidelines of the summit. Why should the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) care about gender? What are women, and women's networks, doing to advance democracy – and how should a military alliance think about the strategic utility of programs like Women, Peace and Security? And what does this mean for the NATO Summit? Irene Fellin, the NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, joins Dr. Kathleen McInnis, Senior Fellow, International Security Program and Director, Smart Women, Smart Power Initiative, to discuss what's on her mind as NATO celebrates its 75th year and heads into the Washington Summit.
The Washington Summit is underway with members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation celebrating the 75th anniversary of the alliance. SBS takes a look back at NATO's creation and rise over the past seven and a half decades.

On the occassion of President Joseph Biden's 81st birthday, re-upping some observations on the first and last Silent Generation POTUS. (Even if he only made the Silent cutoff by about 6 weeks.) ===================================== President Joseph Biden is the first President from the Silent Generation, and presumably the last. Is that going to be a problem, here in the Fourth Turning? Perhaps not, considering how little we understand about how leaders change in the later Elder period of life. His governing style might not be the standard for how the Artist archetype is expected to manifest. Here's the excerpt again: “As the forces of history amass under Boom leadership, the Silent can remind Boomers of kindness, 13ers of conscience, Millenials of caution. The danger will lie in any attempt by aging Silent leaders to get too much in the way of the thickening forces of history - for example, if an eightyish President (or Supreme Court) insists on scrupulous process at a moment when younger generations begin to coalesce around the need for decisive action. The last time this happened, during the Presidency of old Compromiser James Buchanan, the foot dragging of elder Adaptives helped foment the most destructive crisis in American History. The same could occur if antiquarian Silent leadership helps usher in the Crisis of 2020.” Neil Howe & William Strauss, Generations, published 1991, page 395 the Silent generation section of “Completing the Millennial Cycle” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_presidents_of_the_United_States_by_age Reagan's meetings with Gorbachev in the last 18 months of office. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Summit_(1987) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Summit_(1988) Mitch McConnell was born 2/20/1942, is a more definite silent, if only by a few months. Pickering, former U.S. under secretary of state for political affairs, moderates.
