The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 198: Share Your Yoga Specialty with Megan Mulrine [Consultation Call] Description: Specialization is an ongoing process, and times of change and uncertainty can be just the push you need to niche down and specialize in something that really lights you up. Megan Mulrine is the founder of Yogatrotter and a yoga instructor who has trained more than 600 yoga teachers in 200 and 300hr YTT programs in Bali. Through her years of practicing and teaching yoga, and discovering more about Buddist meditation, Hindu philosophy and the history of yoga, Megan discovered her passion for Hindu mythology as it relates to Yoga. She has studied Hindu epics like the Mahabarata and the Ramayana) and shares these stories with her classes to deepen their understanding of the history, legends and culture contained within the yoga asanas. When travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic forced Megan to close down her in-person Yoga Teacher Trainings, she quickly put up an online training. It sold well at first but has started to slow and Megan is now worried about being able to sustain her yoga business while supporting her team of teachers as much as possible. In this consultation call, Shannon helps Megan peel back the layers of her business by digging into where her true passion lies and how she can specialize to share her passion with more people. Shannon also advises her on how to build a sustainable business that serves her audience, while also supporting her lifestyle and finances. If you have been thinking about creating a more sustainable yoga business, and questioning whether specialization and niching down is the way to go in the midst of all the uncertainty, give this episode a listen. Key Takeaways: [5:44] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Megan Mulrine. [7:15] What does Megan need most help with in her yoga business? She shares her biggest challenges as a result of the pandemic. [8:58] Who is Megan's audience? When was she planning to host the next 200-hr training (if COVID hadn't happened)? Shannon digs into some of the details about Megan's offerings and her plan for her business. [12:38] When Megan first switched to online courses, they were selling well but her numbers have dropped off since. Are people getting tired of being on their computers so much? [15:29] Which specialty would Megan choose if money was not a consideration? [17:29] As important as picking a specialty is making sure that people know about your specialty. [20:01] Megan struggles with sharing what she does and her specialty with her audience. Shannon coaches her on how to phrase her offering. [22:53] Shannon advises Megan on how best to repel people who would not be a fit for her offering but also attract people who would be interested. [26:40] Shannon shares some strategies with Megan on how to build her audience. [30:22] Shannon gives a shout out to Schedulicity. [32:05] Is there a "freebie" in your yoga business that you should be monetizing into a paid offering? Listen to Megan talk about her "freebie" that Shannon recommends repackaging into a paid offering. [34:33] When you love what you're doing, showing up and doing the work for free can feel easy, but that doesn't mean we should. Megan and Shannon discuss a bit about her money mindset. [36:41] Shannon shares some ideas for Megan to showcase her community and build deeper connections even virtually. [39:54] Shannon recommends that Megan figure out her minimum viable income and how much she wants to make financially -- and why she should do that. [44:32] What happens when yoga teachers fail to see the unique gifts that they have and share them with others? [46:42] Shannon and Megan do some brainstorming around what her freebie should be and how she can put out a call to action more often to monetize. [50:25] Megan offers her training in a rolling sign ups format, but isn't seeing a high number of completions. Would having a fixed start and end date add accountability and be more effective from a marketing perspective? [1:00:06] Shannon and Megan discuss more ideas for her content to show up more in search engines. [1:02:41] Find out more about Megan and her offerings via her website or Instagram. When Megan came to me this May 2020, amidst the peak of the hardships that came with the pandemic, she was really struggling with binge eating, over exercising, perfectionism in her eating and body checking constantly. On top of all of this, she also had a laundry of food sensitivities that were adding to the complicated nature of all of this – or so she thought. After 4 months of working together through my one-on-one coaching program, The Intuitive Way For Eating, she no longer body checks first thing in the morning, she eats what she wants, she's much more compassionate with her exercise regime. Oh, and those food sensitivities? We resolved them altogether – and they had nothing to do with the food. Episode Notes In this episode we discuss: - Why Megan reached out for help when she did- How Megan instilled trust in intuitive eating after following conventional diets for so long - What was actually at the root of Megan's food sensitivities - The major benefits Megan has noticed in her life since adopting and living out the intuitive eating philosophy- How she made peace with her changing body - What Megan is able to do now that all of her thoughts aren't consumed by food and exerciseIntuitive Way For Eating Winter 2021 - NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONSClaim one of the 15 spots for the Winter 2021 Intuitive Way For Eating program and submit your application today! Blog post with images and links I’ve been thinking a lot about how to share the incredible work of more teaching artists and also share some of the amazing resources I’m seeing as well as my own tips and experiences. That’s where these mini-episodes come in. I plan to include a few segments here. First, I’ll share a bit about a featured teaching artist. Then I’ll share tips and resources. Then some challenges, and finally shout-outs. Featured Artist I’m so excited to share Maria Coit’s work! She makes beautiful dreamy landscape paintings in oil as well as prints. Maria is a middle school art teacher and founder of Curated for Kids. I’ll be sharing her work on our instagram this week as well as on our blog. Want to be a featured artist? Apply here! Maria Coit is a painter and printmaker based in the desert of Southern California. She is a mother of three feisty kids and an art educator in addition to being a practicing artist. She says “Engaging in my own creative practice is vital to my ability to teach art, as well as be an effective parent.” Maria’s work is intuitive in nature, guided by feelings and memories that are eternally linked in her mind by imagery. She documents moments infused with emotion and memory through photography, translating these through the physical & tactile processes of painting and printmaking. Through the physical act of layering colors and textures, she explores the effects of Time on the memories and emotions captured in her photographs. This work continually confronts the question, “how does Time, as an unrelenting force of change, affect our innermost thoughts and deepest memories?” The intuitive & exploratory processes she engages in highlight the change that Time affects within and outside of herself. Resource: Printmaking at Home! I will be sharing 6 Printmaking techniques for at home learning on Be Fun Be Kind later today!! If you miss the live workshop, there will be a replay available. Challenge of the week Time! Ah! Where does the time go? Are you feeling an intense lack of time? Shout Out! I was beyond excited when I saw Megan Driving Hawk post a photo of herself wearing the Teaching Artist mask and T-Shirt! I have been loving the work she shares and her advocacy. When Megan shares one of her stunning double-exposures, she also shares the indigenous land on which it was created using the Native Land App. Grab the Native Land app in the app store or google play and get a Teaching Artist shirt or mask at our shop. . . . In this episode we get the privilege of conversing with Megan Maerkl, who's firefighter husband Ed has been on previous episodes of the show. When Megan was 3 years old and sitting in a car seat of her parents car, a bad Florida storm raged and the experience of driving through the storm ruined her for decades thereafter. Today we talk with Megan, an inspirational college student. When Megan had to move home from college, she found herself missing her routine and friends at Texas A&M, while trying to figure out how to succeed in online classes. Megan is majoring in molecular and cell biology, and hoping to go to medical school in the future. In the middle of the semester, her lab classes were switched to online, with Zoom and video lectures, and she wanted to find a way to release the stress away from a screen. Megan's had lots of hobbies her whole life. While back at home, she began designing and making clay earrings with her mom and sister. Her project evolved into a business which she launched on social media in the end of March. She sees this time in history as an opportunity to try new things and continue to grow. Her first customer outside of her friend group was Dr. Stevie Stanford, a guest on our show! Even though she loves spending time with her family and growing her business, Megan misses school and looks forward to taking the MCATs soon. Megan is a MMJ patient and since this is the #420 episode wanted a twist on the importance of this drug known as Cannabis and how its properties are beneficial for people like Megan who suffer from what is classified as MS an invisible illness. When Megan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2007, she turned to her doctors and modern medicine to help her manage her condition, but after years of failing to find the right thing for her body and her disease, she found she was a shell of the person she once was and that the quality of her life had diminished drastically. The drugs she was taking for her MS were doing more harm than good, her chronic pain was off the charts and the mom of three that used to run 6-8 miles daily could barely make it around the block to walk the family dog. Shifting to a natural based protocol has truly been life altering for Megan and she is extremely motivated to share what she has learned with others. She and her husband purchased a 5 acre piece of property in Washington state and are working to open Camp Sunshine, which will provide educational classes and instruction on growing and using cannabis and hemp, along with hosting cannabis friendly events and festivals. This drug has such a powerful and beneficial impact on the people who need it so lets make the world pro cannabis and less prescribed.

Today, I am lucky to have here with me, the CEO and co-founder of the Fasting Method Program, clinical educator, and researcher, Megan Ramos. Megan’s major role in the The Fasting Method is to facilitate the patient’s education on the Fasting Method dietary principles and counsel them on their fasting regimens. Megan, along with her colleague Dr. Jason Fung, believe that both what you eat and when you eat matter. The Fasting Method utilizes therapeutic fasting and time restricted eating protocols with their patients to help them reverse their type 2 diabetes and achieve sustainable weight-loss. They encourage their patients to eat real foods and adopt a low-carb lifestyle in addition to the fasting. Megan was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NALFD) at age 12, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) at age 14, and type 2 diabetes (DMII) at age 27. She reversed these metabolic conditions and achieve an 86-pound weight loss by incorporating intermittent fasting with a low carb diet, and is now passionate about helping others do the same. Megan lives in Toronto, Canada. She is a director of the nonprofit organization Public Health Collaboration Canada (PHC Canada), works on the editorial board of the Journal of Insulin Resistance and Team Diet Doctor. In this episode, Megan Ramos opens the show explaining her various health problems growing up. She started working with Dr. Jason Fung at the age of fifteen, and together, they realized the importance of fasting. Plus, Megan explains how essential it is to be proactive when it comes to your health. Not many people understand that we need to get to the root cause of a disease rather than treating the symptoms. Stay tuned as Megan gives fasting advice, and she reveals the most surprising benefits the practice can offer.
Today I chat with Megan Seamans, international life coach and speaker, about how to actually create a life that is aligned with your values and that makes you want to jump out of the bed in the morning. We dive into what it really means to find your purpose: what “should” you be doing? How to know you are actually on the right track? What are strategies that you can implement to find your true purpose and calling? Then we address self trust and how to choose your own path instead of being influenced by other people’s stories and holding onto other’s people’s beliefs. How can we quiet the external noise and instead tune inwards to receive the answers we are seeking? We talk about why “should-ing” all over yourself is only making you resist change even more and what is the appropriate alternative. Plus I interview Megan on her experience as a nomadic entrepreneur and how she made it in her business. And much much more! About Megan Megan helps female entrepreneurs get out of their comfort zone and confidently step into the life and business they are wildly obsessed with! She is passionate about getting women out of an auto-pilot life and into a life of purpose. Megan will guide you to rewrite old stories that are keeping you small, and tap back into the power of YOU! She is obsessed with turning fear into confidence and overwhelm into clarity. When Megan is not coaching, you can probably find her having a dance party or packing up for her next adventure. She is currently living on a one way ticket, traveling through Europe. Links www.meganseamans.com Instagram Clarity Journal Guide PCOS Breakthrough Academy Thank you for listening to today’s episode! Clay from Maple Valley has asked for our help because he is uncomfortable that his girlfriend Megan from Kent is always paying for everything and spending a lot of money on him. He acknowledges that she makes more than him and says he is OK with that, but he doesn’t like that she takes him on elaborate vacations and buys him nice things; he thinks she should be saving more for the future. When Megan comes on we get quite a bit more detail, including that she works at Amazon and he is an assistant manager at Taco Time and her salary is about 4 times his. She says she has worked very hard to get where she is, she is absolutely saving for the future, and she wants to enjoy whatever time off she has doing cool stuff and travelling with Clay and she doesn’t get why he can’t just enjoy it. It seems like such a solvable problem and an easy “Make Up”, until Clay says the reason it’s so important to save for the future is because he assumes when they have kids she will quit working. That’s when the Mexi-Fries start flying.

The mission of Megan O’Connor’s company is empowering: We build educators into entrepreneurs. The company she co-founded, Clark, gives tutors and educators an online platform with tools for opening and managing an education business. For example, if you decided you wanted to start a side business tutoring, you could join Clark to automate scheduling, payment management, monitor student progress, find client leads, and get support from others with similar businesses. Clark also has added a content platform that facilitates sharing and collaboration among tutors on content ideas. Clark is the perfect example of technology enabling business owners to improve where they spend their time, and increase their revenue, impact and reach. Clark was even featured on Apple's Planet of the Apps, and as a result received venture funding and the opportunity to work with Gary Vaynerchuk to perfect their platform. Some of the best startups are created when the founders are passionate about solving a problem. While growing up, Megan watched her mother – a school teacher – struggle with the demands of her personal tutoring business. When Megan realized there wasn’t a solution on the market to help her mom reduce time spent on administrative tasks with her tutoring business, the seed for Clark was planted. Today, Clark has 11 full-time employees, funding from leading venture investors, and ambitious plans to continue its work of creating powerful tools that empower the people doing some of the most important work there is, our educators.
Megan Kroff shares how she kept her faith having a child with a heart problem and Prader-Willi Syndrome as well as her personal struggles with anxiety and bipolar disorder. Megan’s Bio Megan was born and raised in St. George, Utah but has also lived in Texas. She met and married the love of her life, Justin, while attending Dixie State College. While living in St. George, Megan gave birth to their special daughter, Sarah. It was a struggle to keep her alive and her birth sent them spiraling into the special needs world. Next they had their son, Spencer. He too was a miracle. While she was pregnant with him, they found out he had cysts on his brain and we were told he could be born with Trisomy 18—he may not survive birth. When Sarah turned 3 years old she was finally diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome. Megan and her husband Justin have experienced job loss, miscarriage, hurricanes, bed rest, and Megan was finally diagnosed with a soft form of bipolar, which explained her depression and anxiety/panic attacks. These challenges gave them opportunities to grow. Megan and Justin are now living back in Utah where they are on the Board of Directors for the Utah Prader-Willi Syndrome Association. They love traveling together. Megan loves being a mom more than anything in the world. Family is her passion. When she has alone time, she loves reading, Pilates, cooking, and organizing other people’s houses—no joke! Megan’s Story Sarah’s Birth & Story We begin Megan’s story with a normal first pregnancy. Sarah was about a week overdue, so the doctors decided to induce her. The induction went very quickly. Sarah was born an hour and a half after they started, which was very fast for a first baby. Sarah was born blue. Her APGAR (https://americanpregnancy.org/labor-and-birth/apgar-test/) scores were very low. She wasn’t breathing, and didn’t even cry when she was born. So, the nurses immediately whisked Sarah away down the hall to help her. Megan and her husband didn’t even get to see her. They brought her back when she was pink and warm. When Megan went to breastfeed Sarah she didn’t have any kind of a sucking reflex or desire to eat. She was very weak. Sarah’s pediatrician seemed concerned she was so little and was losing weight. Babies are often born with a hole in their heart which will close up when they cry. But Sarah’s wasn’t closing up. So the little hospital in St. George was communicating with Primary Children’s Hospital up in Salt Lake City about the hole in Sarah’s heart. After keeping Sarah for a week, they sent her home with an appointment up a Primary Children’s hospital. Complications Not long after they had been home, Megan was on the phone with the pediatrician setting up an appointment and Sarah turned bright blue. The nurse told her to bring her right into their office which was a block away. When they arrived the doctor grabbed her and the oxygen and got her breathing again. Their doctor was a man of great faith and he prayed with them. He decided they needed to drive up to Salt Lake City right then to see the cardiologist. After getting Sarah stabilized they decided to do the 5 hour drive up to Salt Lake City instead of doing a life flight. They arrived at her sister’s house who lived a few blocks away from Primary Children’s hospital and started to eat. While they were eating Sarah’s oxygen levels began dropping, so they decided to take her to the Emergency Room. This started the lowest low Megan had ever experienced. When they got Sarah to the hospital she was in heart failure. The doctors and nurses were frantically working on her and while Megan and Justin sat on the bed across from them watching them work on their daughter’s bare body. They sat and clung to each other as a Code Blue went off and more doctors rushed to the room. Changing Her Prayer Megan remembers praying a lot, “Father, save her! Take this from her....

An interview Megan Costello, LMFT on taking the best of Community Mental Health into your private practice. Curt and Katie interview Megan about her very successful private practice that is 100% home and field-based. They talk about how to a field-based practice works, including practical considerations. It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. We are human beings who can now present ourselves as whole people, with authenticity, purpose, and connection. Especially now, when therapists must develop a personal brand to market their practices. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age. Interview with Megan Costello, LMFT Megan Costello, LMFT, is a person-centered behaviorist providing in-home counseling for families in Los Angeles. Megan has provided services to clients in their homes or the community for almost 15 years. Megan started her career as a behavioral technician, providing behavioral therapy under the supervision of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) before she moved into a supervisory role for Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) cases (both in- home and school-based cases). Megan continued this work as she obtained her Masters of Science in Counseling at California State University, Long Beach. Megan then added clinical work in community mental health, providing specialized support to children on the autism spectrum with trauma histories. When Megan moved into private practice, she incorporated the best of the in-home and behavioral interventions into her treatment model. She brings practical advice and strategies to her clinical work, providing specialized, comprehensive treatment to higher needs or atypical cases. In this episode we talk about: Megan’s perspective and a new model for private practice How to make applied behavioral analysis more person-centered The value of being relentlessly client-centered and doing the highest impact work, regardless of how convenient to the therapist The types of clients who would benefit more from in-home and school-based therapy The benefits of in-home therapy over in-office therapy The need to price your services accordingly How to create an office in your car How to manage your scheduling The unique challenges of working in the home, looking at confidentiality, family involvement The model that requires family and parent involvement Safety assessments prior to going out to the home How to assess over the phone prior to starting home-based treatment Getting parent buy-in for active involvement in treatment for their child Relevant Resources: We’ve pulled together any resources mentioned in this episode and put together some handy-dandy links: Megan’s website: https://www.megcostello.com/ Megan’s consultation: https://www.megcostello.com/consulting AND WE HAVE A PICTURE OF MEGAN'S TRUNK ON THE WEBSITE! Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
When Megan (from the UK) and Mark (an American) started their respective hikes on March 5, 2018, neither could have imagined how their lives were about to change. They met that first day–Megan was the very first person who Mark met on the trail–and started hiking together the following morning. Their meeting and the unfolding of their hike reflects the serendipity of the Appalachian Trail and they summited together five months later. When they had finished, Mark put together this short video of their hike at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAHFsEhANt0 while Megan blogged about their journey at https://megdolmanat2018.wordpress.com/ Bruce Matson came on the show to share news of his successful fundraising efforts on behalf of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and shared some news of his upcoming book to add more funds to the ATC. If you'd like to see more of Bruce's hike and efforts, go to http://www.rtkchallenge.com/ and https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgs4kgtMJPGslFSwHkgkesQ/featured. When Megan was 19 years old she was on track to make the national rowing team, until her coach told her she would be a better rower if she just weighed less. She trained more, ate less, and watched her body break down until her ribs broke under the stress. Somewhere along the line she realized this wasn’t how she wanted to live, and chose to forgo her dream of the Olympics. Meghan and discuss how it feels to give up your dream and what you feel is your identity. Meghan gets honest about how to move on and how running gave her peace and brought the fun back in sport. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And today I’m joined by a {laughs} I really wanted to say sister from another mister! {laughing} She’s a fellow Garcia. Please forgive my nerdiness. And I’m really excited to chat with her. Her name is Megan Garcia. She is, to tell you really quickly about her, Megan is a mama of two boys. She lives in Los Angeles. She has a master’s degree in traditional Oriental medicine. And is the creator of First Foods and Beyond. When Megan found out she was pregnant with her first baby back in 2011, she began exploring baby health and wellness. Specifically, a baby’s first 1000 days. Her interest in baby health, combined with a big love for all things food and gut related, has become the heart and soul of what she does in her own little corner of the web at MeganGarcia.com. Gosh, that is the second time I tried to mispronounce your last name, which is very embarrassing, because it’s my name, Megan; welcome to the show! Megan Garcia: Thank you! I’m so excited to be here. Cassy Joy: I’m so excited to have you here. This is going to be really fun, and it’s very relevant, because I have an 8-month-old. And I feel like I’m a sponge right now, learning as much as I can about first foods. So thank you so much for taking the time to come on. I would love it if you could tell us a little bit more about yourself. And then we’ll jump into some of these questions. Megan Garcia: Ok. So, I have a background in Chinese medicine. And I talk about herbs and acupuncture a lot in my work, just because it’s kind of a natural way to manage imbalances in the body. But, when I was in school, I did a lot of writing for folks in the health industry. Bloggers and other people. So, when I was doing that, I kind of realized that I wanted to read actual research and science. And I live right next door to UCLA, and that’s where I went to school as an undergrad. So I ended up spending a lot of time on the UCLA campus, reading a lot of research about the gut and the immune system. And that’s how I did my work then. Then I got pregnant, and I continued to do that. I had a baby. And I was interested in pregnancy and nutrition for baby. But it really wasn’t until he was 2 years old that I kind of decided that I wanted to do something of my own. And start blogging, instead of more of a ghost-writing position. More of; this is me, and this is what I think about. So, it turns out that gut health and the immune system, it really has a big role in pregnancy and diet as well. All the different diets that we do, like AIP diet, and paleo, and all of that. It plays a really big role in those first 1000 days of baby’s life. Which would be 9 months of pregnancy, and then the 2 years of your baby’s life. And those 1000 days have a huge impact on the rest of your baby’s life. Not to put pressure on moms; I know we already have enough pressure and mom guilt. But it really helps to have knowledge about what might be the best thing. That’s what I’m really passionate about. Because I feel like there is a lot of pressure we place on ourselves, so there’s room for compassion. And just understanding yourself, and being kind to yourself. But at the same time, there’s also room for legit research knowledge to come into play, and help you make choices in a really easy way. Cassy Joy: I love it. Well I’m all about empowering information.
Our guest today Megan Grassel. When Megan was 17 years old she took her little sister Mary Margaret shopping for her first Bra. They scoured the mall to find a product that she was excited about, but ended up being completely appalled at all of the bra options that were not only available for her little sister, but also marketed to her and girls her age. Padding, push-up features and underwire galore… Megan could not believe that these were the bras that girls were supposed to wear! She saw something wrong with that entire experience. In fact, it was a day that she could not stop thinking about. Why wasn’t there just a cute, colorful and comfortable bra for Mary Margaret to fit her and her body, not the body that she was “supposed” to have? The answer was that there simply wasn’t one. That is when Megan realized that if no one else was going to make bras specifically for girls, then she was going to find a way to do it herself. Armed with her own hand-drawn pattern on her dad’s yellow legal pad and the small savings she had earned from her summer job bussing tables, she moved forward with this idea. As a junior in high school in 2014, Megan founded , Yellowberry, to change the bra industry for girls." In 2014, Megan was selected as one of TIME Magazine’s 25 Most Influential Teens and included on Huffington Post’s list of 14 Most Fearless Teens. In 2015, Megan was named one of the 24 Millennials to Watch by Yahoo. In 2016 Megan was named one of Forbes Magazines 30 under 30. She has been featured in countless media outlets including The TODAY Show, The New York Times, Fast Company, Inc. Magazine, Forbes Magazine, Seventeen and Teen Vogue among others. r
