A while back we chatted with Sian Proctor (@DrSianProctor), an analog astronaut and geoscience professor at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, AZ. We got some insight on what analog astronauts do and what it's like to live in a mock Mars habitat for months in Hawaii but today we ask Do you ever wonder how going to space can help us on Earth?Sian Proctor's specialty is geologic disasters, she looks into how these disasters impact humans' ability to survive. Now the real question is how does studying geologic disasters prepare us for space exploration or better yet how does space exploration help us get through the natural disasters here on earth!? Could it be that if “we solve for space we solve for earth” Have a question you've been wondering about? If you're looking for an inspiring human being, it would be hard to beat Dr. Sian Proctor. Dr. Proctor is a geoscientist, and also an artist and poet who uses her afro-futurist space art to encourage conversations about women of color in the space industry. For 21 years, she taught geology, sustainability, and planetary science. She also happens to be an astronaut(!), and was the mission pilot for the Inspiration4 all-civilian orbital mission to space. Her call sign “Leo” was eaned from her crewmates, who consider her a modern-day Rennaisance woman in the mold of Leonardo DaVinci. This special episode of the Design Better Podcast was recorded at an internal event for InVision, where we brought Dr.Proctor in to speak to our team. After her inspiring presentation, we had the chance to interview her, and we spoke about topics ranging from imposter syndrome, to learning to speak the language of your collaborators, to the natural synthesis between art and science. Bio Dr. Proctor is a geoscientist, explorer, space artist, and astronaut. She is the mission pilot for the Inspiration4 all-civilian orbital mission to space. She is also one of The Explorer's Club 50: Fifty People Changing the World. Her motto is called Space2inspire where she encourages people to use their unique, one-of-a-kind strengths, and passion to inspire those within their reach and beyond. She believes that we need to actively strive for a J.E.D.I. space: a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive space as we advance human spaceflight. Dr. Proctor spent 21 years as a professor teaching geology, sustainability, and planetary science at South Mountain Community College, Phoenix, Arizona. She is currently the Open Educations Resource Coordinator for the Maricopa Community College District. She has a B.S. in Environmental Science, an M.S. in Geology, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction: Science Education. She recently finished a sabbatical at Arizona State University's Center for Education Through Exploration creating virtual field trips. She did her 2012-13 sabbatical at the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute developing their science of disasters curriculum. She has appeared in multiple international science shows and is currently on A World Without NASA and Strange Evidence. You can follow her on social media @DrSianProctor.
Mara & KC are a couple of graphic designers who live in the Phoenix metro area. KC was a hand builder in college and Mara became obsessed with wheel throwing just a few years ago. They started to look for a studio space outside of their laundry room and when they couldn't find one, they decided to create one. Like all little ideas, it snowballed, and before they knew it, they were opening a full-blown public ceramics studio and coffee shop/wine bar. Tom started working with clay in middle school and has continued to work in the medium ever since for 25 plus years. He is based out of Tempe, AZ who creates functional and sculptural objects. All dots are individually applied one by one and all work is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Tom earned his BFA from Arizona State University and his MFA from New Mexico State University both with an emphasis in ceramics. He is currently an adjunct professor at South Mountain Community College and instructor at PIP Coffee and Clay. http://ThePottersCast.com/828

Is stealing more bases as simple as telling your kids, "Be aggressive! They can't throw you out!" As kids move up the ranks, defenses CAN throw you out. Then what? Tyler Gillum of South Mountain Community College and the Savannah Bananas tells you what—and how—in part 2 of our two-part interview. Plus Rob answers the Question of the Week (38:11) about when your kid should play up. Please let us (and others) know how you feel about the show by giving us an honest review & rating on iTunes!
In this episode I talk with Natallia Lane William about her path to being a leader in tech at ON Semi. I am extremely proud of her and all that she has accomplished in her career and the impact she is having in her community. Natallia currently hold as position as the onsemi IT Service Desk Regional Desk Side Support Manager for North America. Natallia has been with the company 7.5 years and in that time has excelled within the company and participated in many volunteer events. She is the STEM UP Co-Chair and in that role has had the ability to assist in providing STEM support to many community groups and youth. Prior to onsemi Natallia received her Bachelor's Degree from Arizona State University after beginning her college venture at South Mountain Community College receiving her Associates. She began her IT career as a User Technology Intern within the City of Phoenix, Parks & Recreation IT department. She currently has two children which she refers to as her “little adults”. She continues to have a presence in the community by teaching hip hop to youth in the community she grew up and was groomed in. She takes pride in making every effort to affect the children and the youth in her community to ensure they see they can pursue career paths in STEM fields or dance their way to the top, basically pursue any path they have a passion for no matter where they come from. Today we are joined by Claire Obermarck for a Winter Solstice tale about kindness, greed and evil stepmothers. We also have a cracking good interview & catch-up session, discussing what it means to be a storyteller, staying true to your story (and your heart), and where the line falls when updating outdated elements. We hope you enjoy! In the episode, Claire mentions the South Mountain Community College's Storytelling Program, so I wanted to drop a link here. She currently runs Ceilidh Corner in Sedona, Arizona and—though I forgot to ask if she is still involved—when I met her, she was chair of the Guid Craic Club in Edinburgh, at the Scottish Storytelling Center. You can follow her on social media, here. The song snippets in the middle of this episode come from Three Ravens by Axeltree, used courtesy of the Free Music Archive. Our theme song is Grannen's Bastu by Varelse.
