For our 328th podcast, we celebrate the music of Bahamian guitarist Joseph Spence (1910-1984) and the forthcoming release of Encore: Unheard Recordings of Bahamian Guitar and Singing (out July 16, 2021 on Smithsonian Folkways). Recording engineer, musician and producer Peter K. Siegel joins us to talk about how he recorded these 13 tracks (both in NY and at Spence's home in Nassau), the unlikely guitar that Spence used (it's not what you think), and the music traditions of Andros that led to Spence's singular sound. We also get some advice on other Bahamian music to check out, learn how a former member of the Baha Men (yes, the "Who Let the Dogs Out" band) is trying to keep Spence's music alive, and hear about Siegel's recording session with Doc Watson. It's a great chat.    Go to fretboardjournal.com to hear four tracks from 'Encore' here. Pre-order the album here or via Bandcamp.   Subscribe to the Fretboard Journal magazine here.   Don't forget, we now host an entire family of podcasts, about everything from lutherie to home recording: Luthier on Luthier; The Truth About Vintage Amps; The Truth About Recording & Mixing;Acoustic Voices; and Sweep the Floor. Grammy Award Winning Group The Baha Men Tell Their Story Part 2 Today on The Total Media Network's Dr. Christopher Hall Show, Dr. Hall and The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Grammy Award Winning Group The Baha Men. Approaching their 30th anniversary as a group, the Baha Men rode a massive wave of success in the early 2000s following the release of hit single, ‘Who Let the Dogs Out'. Featured in major motion pictures and chanted throughout sports stadiums around the globe, the Baha Men unleashed a revolutionary form of Caribbean pop that permeated American pop culture. The hit single would go on to earn the band several awards including a 2000 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording,as well as Billboard Music Awards for World Music Artist and Album of the Year. The group would also win a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award for Favorite Song the same year, then follow it up with another Kids Choice Award for Favorite Band in 2002. Their worldwide success also propelled them into the film industry, where they saw several of their songs featured in movies such as Miss Congeniality, Around the World in 80 Days, Garfield: The Movie, Men In Black II, and most notably, The Hangover. 2003 also saw their hit song ‘Best Years of Our Lives' featured in the international hit, Shrek. A relationship with Disney brought about several opportunities for the Baha Men, as well. In 2002, the group covered The Lion King classic, ‘Hakuna Matata', for the debut DisneyMania album. The band would also go on to record ‘Bahama Roller Coaster Ride', their take on ‘Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride' from the movie Lilo & Stitch for DisneyMania 4. Recognized by Rolling Stone as “Bahamian junkanoo pioneers”, the Baha Men continue to hit monumental milestones. With the support of Sony Music Entertainment, the group released ‘Night and Day' in 2014. Soon after, the track was selected to be featured alongside Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Santana, and others in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Official Album. In 2015, the band released Ride With Me, their first album in over ten years, following a performance at the halftime show of a New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys game. The album would mark the beginning of a relationship between the Baha Men and producer Troyton Rami (Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Wayne Wonder), who would go on to produce future releases. As the band nears 100 million cumulative streams worldwide, the group has also performed on Live with Kelly and Ryan, The Bachelorette, and collaborated with Our Last Night for a performance that has since surpassed a million views on YouTube. Through a partnership with producer Troyton Rami, the Baha Men first released ‘Bumpa' on February 22nd, 2018. Reaching 200K Spotify streams since release and featured on Sirius XM's Venus Channel, they followed up the single with the April 5th, 2019 release of ‘Let's Go'. Produced by DJ Buddha (Pitbull), the band honed their high-energy, junkanoo-meets-hip hop brew. With their April 30th release of ‘Take A Chance,” recorded with Patrick Romantik in Miami, the Baha Men continue to prove their longevity and ability to craft high energy pop hooks while maintaining a close-knit and familial feel to their music. Dyson Knight of The Baha Men Today on The Dr. Christopher Hall Show, Dr. Hall and The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Dyson Knight of The Baha Men. The Baha Men formed in 1977[1] as High Voltage, initially playing disco and funk.[2] They performed regularly in nightclubs and hotels in the Bahamas and self-released several albums.[2] In 1991, one of their tapes found its way to Atlantic Records A&R man Steve Greenberg, who signed the band to the Big Beat subsidiary, at the same time getting the band to change their name to the Baha Men.[2] The following year, the Baha Men released their first album, Junkanoo, which included the local hit "Back to the Island".[2] Kalik followed in 1994, including the international hit "Dancing in the Moonlight".[2] The band moved with Greenberg to Polygram for the 1997 album I Like What I Like and Doong Spank, released the following year.[2] The latter sold only 700 copies in the US and the band was dropped by the label. Greenberg then started his own label, S-Curve, and signed the band.[2] Original vocalist Nehemiah Hield left in 1999, and was replaced by his nephew Omerit.[2] The band was most popular in the 1990s in Japan, and their 1999 album 2 Zero 0-0 was initially only released in that country.[2] They achieved great, but short-lived, popularity with 2000's remake of "Who Let the Dogs Out" (originally composed by Anslem Douglas), produced by Greenberg and Michael Mangini.[2] The song was a chart success in many countries and also became a popular song at US sporting events.[2] "Who Let the Dogs Out" also earned the band several awards: a Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Dance Recording;[2] Billboard Music Awards for World Music Artist of the Year and World Music Album of the Year; and a Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award for Favorite Song. In 2002, they won another Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Band.

Producer, songwriter and music lover with deep roots in Northeast Florida, Joe Gonzalez aka Papa Wheelie shares his story behind the song "Who Let the Dogs Out," which became a hit for the Bahamian group Baha Men in 1998. “Sunshine is all it takes to illuminate. I’m not on the hunt for anything. But there’s definitely some things in the dark. So, I’m glad this movie’s out there to help highlight the reality….It was the hook so good that everyone wanted it.” — Joe Gonzalez Joe recounts how he and his friend began as two rappers who met at the Westside Skills Center, where they studied commercial art, but Joe's upbringing in a converted funeral home allowed him to explore music differently which led him to become a beatmaker for Brett's raps. See the Jacksonville premiere of “Who Let The Dogs Out” documentary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sun-Ray Cinema, 1028 Park St. in Five Points. It’s a benefit for hurricane relief in the Bahamas. That's right! We're actually back! Many apologies for the several month hiatus between episodes. You can mostly blame Dave (he elaborates on the podcast). Hopefully, though, we will now be putting up episodes every Sunday (and working on streamlining the post-production process so as to reduce any further delays). Anyways, thanks for sticking with us, and on with the review! As you likely deduced from the podcast title, Dave and Diane review The Hangover this week. Directing: Diane didn't have much to say, but Dave thought that Todd Phillips (director of such movies as Starsky & Hutch and Old School) did a solid job relative to his previous directing efforts. Acting: Overall, Dave and Diane both generally enjoyed the acting. Diane's favorite performance was from Ed Helms (Stu), while Dave's was Zach Galifianakis as Alan. The hosts had an "interesting" discussion of Bradley Cooper (Phil). Music: The soundtrack of this film appealed to Diane's pop-music sensibilities (with tracks such as "Who Let the Dogs Out"), while Dave appreciated its use of older tracks (such as "Joker and the Thief"). Diane generally approved of the music in the film, while Dave thought it served its purpose, but that the music was not overly great. Plot: Diane was quite a fan of the plot in this film. She said in some ways it was rather brilliant, mostly due to a very unique set of comical devices (despite a very clichéd set-up for the movie's story). Dave had similar feelings. He quite enjoyed the humor, which he said was rather smart (despite sometimes resorting to some more low-brow gags). While Dave did not overly enjoy the plot, he felt it served the humor quite well. Overall Score: Both Dave and Diane had similar feelings on this film. While it was certainly not Oscar material, the hosts thought it was a very decent comedy with plenty of good laughs. Diane gave the film a B+, and Dave gave it a B. No Dave's DVD this week! Additional Notes: Dave would like to apologize for his audio levels being a bit high (creating a few rough spots). He's still getting back into the swing of audio editing. The intro music of this episode was provided by the Podshow Podsafe Music Network.
