Jeff and Jim welcome Joseph Carson, cybersecurity expert and host of the Security by Default podcast, for a conversation on AI in offensive and defensive security. Joseph shares the real-world incident that inspired his EIC keynote - watching two AI agents negotiate a ransomware payment live. He breaks down how attackers use unconstrained models to lower the skill barrier and accelerate data exfiltration. The conversation covers NATO Lock Shields, the world's largest live cyber defense exercise, identity as national critical infrastructure, and the EU AI Act's risk-based approach. Also: Estonia's AI tax agents, the energy cost of being polite to AI, and the Tamagotchi theory of human-AI relationships.Connect with Joseph: https://www.linkedin.com/in/josephcarsonNATO Locked Shields: https://ccdcoe.org/exercises/locked-shields/Security by Default podcast (Spotify): https://open.spotify.com/show/0mzN5M5CkFVLn8fq5TnH0OConnect with us on LinkedIn:Jim McDonald: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jimmcdonaldpmp/Jeff Steadman: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffsteadman/Visit the show on the web at http://idacpodcast.comTIMESTAMPS00:00 Welcome and intro03:02 Conference season and IDAC discount codes04:19 Introducing Joseph Carson and Security by Default10:18 Optimist or pessimist on identity security12:30 AI vs. AI - origin of the concept15:02 Watching two AI agents negotiate a ransomware payment17:26 The Tamagotchi metaphor for human-AI relationships19:07 Who is winning the AI cyber arms race21:00 How AI accelerates attacker capabilities23:09 Dark web LLMs and bypassing guardrails26:36 The energy cost of being polite to AI28:15 Agentic AI skills, campaigns, and the Matrix analogy31:34 Estonia AI agents filing tax returns35:14 Introducing NATO Lock Shields37:00 Protecting a simulated nation from 8,500 cyber attacks38:08 Why identity is national critical infrastructure41:18 AI in Lock Shields before and after43:05 Lock Shields 2025 scoring explained47:04 The EU AI Act - is it the next GDPR50:18 Risk-based approach to AI regulation53:35 Closing thoughts and cautious optimism54:21 Scuba diving vs. snowboarding58:05 Wrap-upKEYWORDSAI vs AI, agentic AI, identity security, NATO Lock Shields, EU AI Act, Joseph Carson, Security by Default, ransomware, dark web LLMs, guardrails, data exfiltration, phishing, critical infrastructure, Estonia, cyber defense, IDAC, Identity at the Center, Jeff Steadman, Jim McDonald
In 1997, David Hampton and Caleb Chung took one look at a Tamagotchi and decided they could bring the virtual pet craze into the real world. Their robotic companion, Furby, packed a bunch of advanced technology into a small, adorable, often annoying package. But for all the irritation it caused (Furby famously had no on-off switch) there was a surprising amount of thoughtful philosophy in its design. The Verge's Vee Song, Sean Hollister and host David Pierce are joined by Coco the Furby to discuss the lore behind the hottest toy of 1998. Retro Headlines set the cultural tone of a world on the brink of the millennium. In an expansive Dangerous Deep Dive, Dave breaks down the origins of Dawson's Creek, its creation by Kevin Williamson, the unforgettable core cast, and the character arcs that made Capeside feel real. From Dawson's idealism to Joey's independence, Pacey's growth, and Jack's groundbreaking coming-out storyline, this episode explores why the show resonated so strongly — and why fans still debate it today. The episode also features:
Bruce Leroy joins us for a full-on 90s spiral — cartoons, toys, bad decisions, and the strange realization that we're all officially in different phases of life now. With birthdays looming (44, 47, and a “still-only-40”), we talk retirement dreams, food trucks, moving to the Philippines, and why there's no rush to have life figured out. Then we go deep on 90s culture: legendary cartoon intro music, Ninja Turtles vs. GI Joes, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, He-Man being a toy first, and the absolute chaos of Blockbuster nights (including bike theft and surprise movies behind the wrong case). We reminisce about Tamagotchis, Furbies, Pogs, fake candy cigarettes, and doing wildly dumb things as kids — like outrunning a chow named Bear and learning lessons the hard way.We also get into cancel culture, social media, being present at concerts, how posting habits change as we age, and whether the 90s were actually better — or just different. From Dewey Decimal research to today's information overload, from old-school video games building grit to modern attention spans shrinking, we try to make sense of what's gained and what's lost. It's nostalgia, life perspective, and a lot of laughs — plus a reminder that more money doesn't fix bad habits, not everyone has to win, and sometimes falling into a trash can saves your life.Cheers!m&t

Our guest is the editor of Toy World Magazine, Caroline Tonks, who takes us through the history of toy crazes. We also hear about the invention of the hoverboard, and how the Tamagotchi allowed people to have their own virtual pet. Plus, how the family favourite game, Jenga, was born in 1970s Ghana. The Tamagotchi was first released in Japan in 1996 after it was developed by Akihiro Yokoi and his colleagues at his toy development company.Measuring just a few centimetres long, the egg-shaped digital gadget was home to a series of pixelated alien pets.Owners had to feed, clean and play with their pets by pressing three tiny buttons. Looking after your Tamagotchi and seeing them evolve was thrilling for many children and its popularity quickly spread from Japan across the world.Almost 100 million Tamagotchis have been sold in more than 50 countries. Akihiro Yokoi tells Emily Uchida Finch how the hit toy was born, and the impact its prevalence has had on his life and career. In the 1950s, caller Joy’s dad painted the ceiling of her bedroom navy blue, covered it in glowing stars, and gifted her a telescope! Thousands flock to Downey for the annual masa pilgrimage at the Amapola Market! Another listener recalls his favorite gift as a kid, a BB gun. However, he accidentally shot a bird and felt so bad, to this day he has never picked up a gun, BB or otherwise. Meanwhile Andy and Rahner talk traumatic haircuts from their past and being dumped by their barber! Andy plays listener talkbacks from people who recall their favorite Christmas gifts when they were kids. One caller said we mustn’t encourage greed, which Rahner refers to as toy shaming. Media was so much cooler back in the midcentury. In 1996, what was the hottest Christmas gift? Of course it was Tickle Me Elmo! Others that followed include Buzz Lightyear, Tamagotchi, Furbies, Beanie Babies and Bratz Dolls. And now we have the Labubu. Andy rounds out the show by chatting with a GI Joe collector.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The plan gives every newborn Americans $1,000 to invest in stocks and shares for their future, and is part of President Trump's controversial 'Big, beautiful' spending bill. We'll also look at concerns over why India is requiring telecom companies to pre-install a government tracking app on all new mobile phones. And we revisit a 90s classic — the Tamagotchi is back on top as Japan's most sought-after children's gift this Christmas, nearly thirty years after it first became a sensation.(Picture: Stock selection of US Dollar notes. Send Mary and Kelsey a Message!Remember when we as a nation all collectively believed that Beanie Babies would fund high education and down payments on our future homes? In this episode, Mary and Kelsey go back to their Christmas wish lists of the 90s and 2000s and revisit the most-wanted toys. All of their picks included a hint of drama and they break it all down including how the Beanie Baby bubble burst, why Tamagotchi sent kids to the guidance counselor, the time Furby caused a spy scandal, and the litigation-happy founder behind Razor scooters. From May 02, 2025: Jack saves the worst news for last in this episode featuring tech journalist Florence Ion. Microsoft is increasing the price of its entire Xbox line, including its consoles and peripherals. Jack and Flo lament that it's only going to get worse, thanks to an ever-volatile economy. READ MORE: Microsoft Raises the Price of All Xbox Series Consoles, Xbox Games Confirmed to Hit $80 This Holiday Elsewhere, with Soundgarden being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Jack introduces Flo to guitarist Jason Everman. A decorated veteran of the U.S. Army and Special Forces , Everman was not only a brief member of Soundgarden, but also a one-time member of Nirvana. Jack wonders if Everman feels any jealousy or resentment for being in two bands that have since been admitted to the Hall of Fame, and not being inducted as a member of either. READ MORE: The Rock 'n' Roll Casualty Who Became a War Hero Also discussed in this episode: Jack is the reason Flo uses Threads, because Jack is a big deal there. Flo is a big fan of physical media preservation, and schools Jack on the benefits of running a Plex server. As it turns out, in the year of our Flying Spaghetti Monster 20-and-25, Flo and Jack are equally into Tamagotchi. Hot take: Seth McFarlane has a lot of anger about Charles Schulz' Peanuts cartoons, and takes it out in Family Guy cutaway gags. This week I found myself wandering through a 90s fever dream, yes, there was an actual Tamagotchi pop-up shop, before heading to Chicago for a sold-out show that brought out old students, old stories, and one deeply unimpressed middle schooler. Then, things got even more chaotic when teacher voicemails rolled in: one about 8th graders who can't stop saying “six-seven” (and now in Spanish), and another about a slime experiment gone very, very wrong. Let's just say it involved a phrase no one should ever hear in a science class. Add in a life-saving resource for struggling students and a hill I'm ready to die on why student teachers need to be paid and you've got an episode that's equal parts nostalgia, cringe, and fire. Takeaways: Andrea's surreal discovery of a Tamagotchi pop-up shop in a fully packed 90s-style mall before her Chicago show. A run-in with a 12-year-old fan's son who made it painfully clear parents can't be cool no matter what. A teacher voicemail about students obsessed with the “six-seven” trend and now, thanks to a clever colleague, saying it in Spanish. Another voicemail featuring an 8th grader who made a slime experiment unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. Andrea's passionate plea for change: why student teachers deserve to be paid for their full-time classroom work. -- Teachers' night out? Yes, please! Hey, everybody—it's Monday, September 29, and this is your Monday Motivation Podcast by FWACATA.What's up, heathens? You sweaty, creative masses of chaos? Yeah, that thing that happened—wild, right? I mean, I don't know what happened, because I pre-recorded this. But thanks to the internet's nonstop firehose of madness, I'm sure something insane just went down. So now it sounds like I know what's happening. See how that works? “Dude, did you SEE that shit?” Boom. Timeless.Anyway. Welcome back to the other Monday Motivation—the one where we drag your creative bird out of bed, slap it around a little, pour some coffee on it, and shove it back into the ring.Today's episode? Creative Reboots.Restarting stalled projects with fresh energy. Here's a confession: I have drawers—literal drawers—of half-finished comics, folders of “someday novels,” Google Docs of script fragments, and sketchbooks that look like serial killer ransom notes. Every time I open them, these projects look up at me like, “Bro, remember us? You abandoned us like a Tamagotchi in '98.”We all have them. Projects that start hot—burning like first love—and then three weeks later you're wondering: Why the hell did I think a 400-page Gundam-meets-Full-Metal-Jacket-meets-Mad-Max comic was a good idea? (Spoiler: it wasn't. But I still tried.)Creative projects are like relationships. They start steamy. You doodle hearts around their name. Then reality shows up like a chaperone at prom, and you're sitting in the corner with your unfinished script, not even getting to second base.So what do you do? How do you reboot?Look at your project like it's someone else's. Pretend you found it in a thrift store. What's cool about it? What sucks? Sometimes distance gives you fresh eyes. Go get a coffee. Go stare at a wall. Hell, go smoke a cigarette if that's still your thing. Come back. You'll see it differently.Maybe the project stalled not because it sucks—but because you made it too damn big. Instead of a 400-page epic, make it a 12-page comic. Instead of a novel, a short story. Instead of a film, a TikTok. Give yourself permission to shrink it. Small wins build momentum. If you're stuck, switch the medium. Writing on a laptop? Try pen and paper. Painting with acrylics? Try markers, charcoal, Photoshop—hell, carve it into a potato if you have to. Creativity thrives on novelty. Sometimes the project isn't stuck—you are.Ask yourself: Why did I start this? Was it the story? The character? The mood? Go back to the original spark. I make soundtracks for my projects—yeah, actual playlists. When I hear certain songs, I remember what I wanted the story to feel like, and suddenly, boom—the fire's back.A reboot doesn't mean you finish it tomorrow. It means breathing life back into it. One sketch. One page. One note. That's CPR for your project.Look—unfinished doesn't mean failed. It just means paused. You can hit “play” again anytime. And if it really is dead? That's okay too. Bury it, honor it, and move on. Not every sketch becomes a masterpiece. But every sketch leads somewhere. So this week: dust off one stalled project. Give it a reboot. Look at it with new eyes. Shrink it down. Switch your tools. Reconnect with your why. Do something. Anything. And maybe, just maybe, that creative corpse gets back up and dances. That's it for today's Monday Motivation. If you're digging this podcast, support me on Patreon at patreon.com/fwacata—get behind-the-scenes chaos, comics, art, and maybe the occasional zombie project resurrection. And hey—the Kickstarter for issue 3 of FWACATA is live. Go check it out. Support if you can, or at least spread the word. Even a repost works wonders. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ThisisJuan/fwacata-3-comics-to-the-face?ref=9gnlxmAlright weirdos—reboot, restart, and as always… be good.1. Step Back.2. Scale It Down.3. Change the Tools.4. Reconnect with the “Why.”5. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection.
Part 2 of Eoin's chat with Johann Gouws.Today's guest has a story of resilience that's nothing short of inspiring. Johann, from South Africa, was misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes at age 35 and spent six months without insulin, with blood sugars soaring as high as 42.9mmol/L (772.2mg/dL).On top of that, he's survived aggressive colitis, lives with a stoma bag, and even faced a heart attack that became the turning point in his diabetes journey.Johann is an HR manager by profession, but outside of work he's a dedicated CrossFit athlete who trains alongside his wife and refuses to let diabetes hold him back. With the support of his community, he was able to access an insulin pump — a device his daughter affectionately calls his ‘Tamagotchi,' because, just like the toy, it keeps him alive. She even nicknamed him the ‘Diabetic Ranger,' a reminder that he's still her superhero, just with a few extra accessories.Since switching to the MiniMed 780G in late 2024, Johann's life has completely changed. Not only has his confidence and health soared, but he's now qualified for the 2025 CrossFit Games finals in Las Vegas — proof that diabetes doesn't define him, it drives him.As always, be sure to rate, comment, subscribe and share. This week on Grumpy Old Geeks, we're diving headfirst into the digital dumpster fire, starting with follow-up that will make you wonder if the rich are finally getting their comeuppance. It seems Tesla's market share is plummeting, and Elon Musk has been unceremoniously knocked off as the world's wealthiest person. Meanwhile, OpenAI and Microsoft are flirting with new partnership terms, and OpenAI is also reportedly cozying up with Oracle for a cloud computing deal. Are they figuring it all out or just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic? You decide. In the news, it's a feast of AI-induced chaos. Anthropic attempted to settle a copyright lawsuit for $1.5 billion, but a judge rejected it. Apple faces scrutiny for allegedly using pirated books to train AI (because who needs original ideas when you can just steal them?), and everyone from Reddit to Yahoo is rushing to get paid for their data being scraped by AI. Google even admits that the open web is struggling, while pushing ads into AI-generated answers and trying to convince us that DOGE never existed. Meanwhile, millions of YouTube videos have been copied by AI companies—because why create when you can just steal? Not to mention, The Boring Company reportedly stopped tunneling after a "crushing injury" (ironic, huh?), Zuckerberg and Palmer Luckey are teaming up again like a disastrous boy band for military-grade goggles, and Meta whistleblowers are exposing child safety issues. Plus, a hot mic caught Zuck groveling to Trump—the cringe is real. And if that wasn't enough, it turns out AI usage is actually declining at big companies, and programmers using AI are creating more security risks than a screen door on a submarine. It's almost like we saw this coming. For your Media Candy fix, get ready for a dose of existential dread. The MTV Video Music Awards are still happening in 2025, with a median viewer age of 56—because nothing screams "youth culture" like osteoporosis. We'll wonder if Wednesday (aka Charlie Sheen) is still winning and discuss Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Amazon Music is launching AI-powered playlists (because who needs a human DJ when you can have an algorithm that thinks it knows your soul?), and Deezer claims 28% of all new music is AI-generated. Taika Waititi is developing a "potentially disastrous" Fyre Fest musical (we're excited!), Foundation is renewed for season 4, and the HBO Max CEO thinks it's "way underpriced"—bless his heart. Plus, more Highlander reboot news that will probably disappoint, and a look at The Missi & Brooke Show and The Traitors Ireland. Finally, in Apps & Doodads, bad news for AirPods Live Translation in the EU, Evernote and WeTransfer's owner is buying Vimeo, and you need this pettable Poké Ball Tamagotchi-style toy. In The Dark Side with Dave, we'll discuss The Princess Bride, how tariffs are ruining hobbies, and who wants "slop for their ears." This episode shows that some things never change, and most things are just getting worse.
