The meeting of the Laois and Kildare footballers is always one of the most anticipated fixtures in this part of the world.  Be it championship, league or O'Byrne Cup, it's a game that has thrown up some great moments over the years.  While Kildare have had the upper hand for most of the past 20 years, Laois have come out on top in the last two meetings - in last year's Tailteann Cup quarter-final in Tullamore and in the 2022 O'Byrne Cup semi-final, after penalties, in Carlow.  This Saturday they meet in the redeveloped St Conleth's Park in Newbridge, a 7pm throw-in under the lights that wouldn't have been the worst choice for RTE's live game.  Kildare, under new manager Brian Flanagan, have won their first three games and are top of the table. Laois, though they lost to Offaly in their first outing, are in third place having won their last two, including an impressive win over Sligo last Sunday.  To look ahead to the game, we have a special preview podcast, recorded live in the Joe Mallon Motors showrooms in Naas.  Joining us for the chat are former Kildare footballer Johnny Doyle, as well as three-time All Ireland final referee Maurice Deegan, who is currently a member of the Football Review Committee that have introduced the new changes to the game.  LaoisToday's Steven Miller and Alan Hartnett chat to the two lads about the rules, what they like and don't like, the form of both team, the new St Conleth's Park and some of Johnny's memories from playing Laois.  LaoisToday are proud brand ambassadors for Joe Mallon Motors and this episode was recorded in their showrooms on the Sallins Road in Naas. Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

In the late 1980s, few movies encapsulated the aspirational vibe of the era quite like Cocktail. Released in 1988, this romantic drama, directed by Roger Donaldson and starring a magnetic Tom Cruise, is a cocktail of ambition, love, and the search for identity. For this week's episode of Born to Watch, we're deep-diving into this cult classic. In this Cocktail (1988) Movie Review, we'll explore the film's signature style, performances, and its lasting impact on pop culture. The Story of Brian FlanaganCocktail follows Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise), a charming and ambitious young man fresh out of the military who dreams of making it big in the corporate world. After facing rejection from high-powered job opportunities in New York City, Brian turns to bartending as a temporary gig, only to discover a talent for mixing drinks and working a crowd. Under the tutelage of seasoned bartender Doug Coughlin (played by Bryan Brown), Brian learns the art of flair bartending—transforming cocktail-making into a theatrical performance. But as Brian rises through the ranks of nightlife stardom, his ambitions clash with reality, leading to heartbreak, betrayal, and, ultimately, self-discovery. From the high-energy Manhattan bar scene to the tranquil beaches of Jamaica, the movie's settings are as diverse as its themes.Tom Cruise: A Star Shining BrightBy 1988, Tom Cruise was already a household name, thanks to hits like Top Gun and Risky Business. In Cocktail, Cruise once again exudes the charm and energy that made him a box-office darling. His portrayal of Brian Flanagan is a perfect mix of confidence, vulnerability, and ambition, capturing the complexities of a man torn between his lofty dreams and the harsh realities of life.Cruise's ability to sell even the most over-the-top scenes—like flipping bottles mid-air to a raucous crowd—speaks to his charisma and star power. It's no surprise that the role cemented him as one of Hollywood's most bankable leading men.The Mentor and the LessonsBryan Brown delivers a standout performance as Doug Coughlin, Brian's cynical mentor. Doug's “Coughlin's Laws”—a mix of humorous and hard-earned wisdom—serve as Brian's guiding (and sometimes misleading) principles. The dynamic between Cruise and Brown is electric, capturing the highs and lows of their mentor-protégé relationship. Doug's character adds depth to the story, offering a sobering contrast to Brian's youthful exuberance.Romance in ParadiseThe film takes a romantic turn when Brian leaves the city for Jamaica, where he meets Jordan Mooney (played by Elisabeth Shue). Their chemistry is palpable, and Jordan's grounded nature counterbalances Brian's high-flying ambitions. Shue's performance brings warmth and sincerity to the film, anchoring the story in moments of genuine emotion amidst the glitz and drama. The romance between Brian and Jordan is central to the film's emotional arc. It's a tale of love tested by ambition, betrayal, and the quest for redemption—classic ingredients for a memorable romantic drama. The Flair and Theatrics of BartendingOne of Cocktail's most iconic elements is its portrayal of flair bartending. The film transformed the act of making cocktails into a spectacle, with Brian and Doug dazzling crowds by flipping bottles, juggling shakers, and turning bartending into an art form. These high-energy sequences, set to a soundtrack of 80s hits, are among the most memorable in the movie.Songs like “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys and “Addicted to Love” by Robert Palmer add to the film's vibrant atmosphere, making the nightlife scenes come alive with infectious energy. The combination of music, choreography, and Cruise's showmanship turned bartending into an aspirational profession for a generation.Themes of Ambition and IdentityAt its core, Cocktail is a story about ambition—both its allure and its pitfalls. Brian's journey reflects the challenges of chasing big dreams while staying true to oneself. The film explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and the search for meaning in a world driven by material success.Doug's cynicism and Brian's youthful optimism create a compelling tension, forcing Brian to confront his own values and priorities. As the story unfolds, the film raises questions about the cost of ambition and the importance of staying grounded.Cultural Impact and ReceptionCocktail was a box-office success upon its release, earning over $170 million worldwide. However, its reception among critics was mixed, with some dismissing it as shallow and formulaic. Despite this, the film has since gained a cult following thanks to its energetic style, charismatic performances, and memorable soundtrack.Cocktail captured the spirit of the late 80s—a time of excess, ambition, and dreams of making it big. Its influence extended beyond the screen, inspiring a wave of interest in flair bartending and nightlife culture.Flaws and LegacyWhile Cocktail shines in many areas, it's not without its flaws. The screenplay occasionally leans on clichés, and some of the character arcs feel underdeveloped. Critics at the time noted the film's uneven tone, which shifts between lighthearted romance and heavier themes of betrayal and loss. That said, the film's imperfections don't overshadow its strengths. Cocktail remains a time capsule of 80s culture, blending style, romance, and drama into an entertaining package. Its enduring popularity speaks to its ability to resonate with audiences despite its shortcomings. Why It Still MattersDecades after its release, Cocktail continues to captivate audiences with its unique blend of charm and drama. It's a film that invites viewers to reflect on their own ambitions and relationships while enjoying the spectacle of Cruise at his most charismatic. For fans of Tom Cruise or romantic dramas with a twist, Cocktail offers a nostalgic trip back to an era of big dreams, bigger hair, and unforgettable flair. Its themes of ambition, love, and self-discovery are as relevant today as they were in 1988, making it a timeless addition to any movie lover's collection.Final PourCocktail is a cinematic concoction that mixes high-energy performances, memorable music, and a heartfelt story into a crowd-pleasing package. Whether you're drawn to Tom Cruise's star power, the dazzling bartending sequences, or the emotional journey of its characters, this film has something for everyone. For our Born to Watch listeners, we'll be diving deeper into the legacy and behind-the-scenes stories of this 80s gem in this week's episode. So grab your favourite drink, hit play, and join us as we toast to Cocktail—a movie that's equal parts style and substance. The 10-acre site is owned by the Essex National Heritage Commission, also known as Essex Heritage, a non-profit organization that manages and oversees the unique heritage resources of the Essex National Heritage Area. During the summer season, Essex Heritage offers public tours to the light station by boat, as well as overnight stays with a campground and accommodations in the historic assistant keepers' house. Each year, volunteer caretakers stay on the island throughout the summer. Volunteers Tara and Brian Flanagan have spent the past five summers living and working at the light station, logging more than 1,500 hours worked each season. Kokomo...or no? Yes, 1988's Tom Cruise vehicle, Cocktail, was a divisive work of art. Featuring both a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and over $170M take at the box office, it seems cinema history is both shaken and stirred by this Roger Donaldson-directed movie. Now, decades later, has our buzz worn off enough to take a long hard look at the saga of Cruise's "Brian Flanagan"? Why were audiences drunk on love but critics were stone cold sober? Show Notes Episode 365: The Last Barman Poet This week Host Dave Bledsoe struggles with the reality he will never own his own bar, and the best he will ever have is a tab at one. (Which will be constantly overdue) On the show this week take a look at a Tom Cruise movie that had American flipping bottles and breaking glasses all over their basement bars: 1988's Cocktail. (Why? There is no why.) Along the way we learned that instead of using an unexpected financial windfall to better his life, Dave just spent it all on booze. (Same as it ever was.) Then we dive right into the backstory of a movie that no one thought was very good but everyone watched anyway. We learn how a gritty commentary on capitalism and consumer culture was “Disneyfied” into a banal Reagan era blockbuster. Finally we explain why everyone loved the move and how the soundtrack is an abomination and deserves a trial in the Hague for crimes against humanity. (Kind of like this podcast) Our Sponsor this week is The Slippery Nipple, the bar that only served naughty named cocktails. We open the show with Brian Flanagan orating from his bartop and close with Bill Dahl, his powerful karaoke voice. We are breaking our own rules again to respond to an episode of the Rewatchables podcast from the woman's point of view. Like our episode on Boomerang, we love these classics as much as the Rewatchables does, but we examine them under the female gaze and have so much fun doing it!  *** Complicated Women: Not all “rich chicks” are created equal. Coral (Gina Gershon) is a photographer for Rolling Stone who orders up multiple orgasms. Bonnie (Lisa Banes) is a total boss in business who keeps a cadre of boy toys. Kerry Coughlin (Kelly Lynch) is a young Esther Perel who advocates for consensual non-monogamy. Jordan Mooney (Elizabeth Shue) is an independent, creative, beer-drinking “worker and a hustler” as per Coughlin’s laws.  Listen to hear how this movie is ahead of its time from the woman’s point of view. (02:40) *** Scenes. As with other great books and movies, our best scenes were wrapped up with our cringiest. What is actually going on with all the poetry at the Cell Block? And how it is somehow insane and amazing? The montage in Jamaica that starts off strong but ends with a controversial waterfall scene...it’s no surprise that our faves highlight the women! (09:40) *** What’s Your Damage, Doug? We flip our regular segment to discuss the dysfunctional, toxic friendship between Flanagan and Coughlin. (28:32) *** The Pregnancy Twist. Does this work as a plot device? Was abortion intentionally off the table? And did Fatherhood have its Apex Mountain in the late 80s? (38:55) *** Crystal Ball. Do Jordan and Brian make it? Is Cocktails & Dreams in every suburban strip mall yet? Listen to hear our predictions and Carinn’s dream for a remake where the Brian Flanagan character is a woman! (49:39) *** Who Won The Movie? Carinn picks one of the ladies and Kate goes with an obvious but well deserved choice! (53:24) *** Takeaways. Kate reminisces about her love of bars and it gets strangely funny when Kate and Carinn end up wanting to create a bizarro romantic character that is a mix of a drunk and a guy who wants to spread his seed...whaaat?  We end by discussing whether this is a good movie and whether people’s views on that question are colored by gender. On our debut episode of “Deliver Us,” Maggi Van Dorn asks: How can I stay in a church where so many children have been hurt? Not everyone does. Melinda Henneberger, a journalist for The Kansas City Star, tells Maggi why the latest wave of sex abuse news pushed her to leave the Catholic Church. In the hopes of understanding what the church’s future might look like, Maggi also talks to Brian Flanagan, a theologian who puts the sex abuse crisis into historical perspective. The Earful Gang serves up some specials in this ep... But instead of meatloaf muzzarell from the homeland, it's deep analysis of the menacing meta-romantic-comedy overtures of Brian Flanagan! And instead of Chicken a la King (a la Delmonico's), we dive deep into abortion and how societal expectations of loyalty fit into gender roles! And in lieu of ketchup for your fries, we have so much more: cameos from Yolandi Visser and other stalwarts of the Toronto theatre scene, rating YouTube comments by creepiness, and a rare successful match in "Key Line Pie." Featuring a guest (and a magnificent three-way sync) in Matt Apfel, longtime "Cocktail" aficionado and formerly of "Frankenfood" (not a plug).

Falling in Love Montage

The long-anticipated cross-over episode is here! Okay, it's not technically a cross-over, maybe it's just an episode we've been dying* to do with a guest we've been dying to have. Lawrence Kasdan's 1999 Mumford offers no exception to deception and this entire character-driven comedy/drama/maybe chick-flick(?) hinges on one man's lie. Here to help us interrogate this movie is the mayor of Liar City and my** best friend, Brian Flanagan.  Prepare for more conflict in the episode than the movie. Sisters Helen and Valerie, wait for it, have strong and different opinions about this film!?!?! WHAT!?!?! Helen describes Dr. Mumford as a "lovable fraud" and Valerie applauds him for demonstrating that generally, the nicest thing you can do for someone is listen to them.  ☝

Prepare your epsom, calculate your epsom checksum, and relax with the sixth five minutes of Cocktail! Some powerful stuff this episode, as the Earful gang investigates Brian Flanagan's role in #pizzagate, makes wagers on the future of rice-washing AI, takes preliminary efforts to reach out to Heywood Gould (a nail-biting LIVE tweet!), and importantly, never, ever talks over the sound of a human voice. For what is a "podcast" if not a panopticon for us to watch and be watched? And really, what separates the prose of the Earful gang from the work of a yuppie poet? ...and THAT'S the bottom line!

An episode with all the excitement of the Keynesian revolution... but wait, there's more! Brian Flanagan goes full frogman, concurrent with matriculation to the University of Toronto. He's slipping and sliding behind the bar, scoring big tips from the waitstaff and BIGGER tips from Douglas Coughlin. The cocktail gang analyze the terrible, terrible drinks of the 1980s that are screamed in Brian's direction, as well as the vacant heart of 1980s greed. What does it mean? Nothing! Also featuring "With Fresh Eyes", with DJ scuttle_toes.

Outwork, outthink, outscheme, and outmanoeuvre: that's the strategy for the Cocktail Gang as we address the second five, as Brian Flanagan pursues other avenues and wears many ties. We are introduced to the first of Coughlin’s Laws, and hear the chilling name of "McDougall" for the first time. A lot happens during this episode: the psychology of Uncle Pat is delved, logical positivism is assessed, and we even start a lawsuit! Along the way, we attempt to solve the mystery once and for all: did the Mets win the World Series in 1969 or 1965? The movie "Cocktail" offers clues. New feature: "Coughlin’s Laws."

The Cocktail Gang gets "Wild Again" as we set off on a new podtail... or should we say "pod tale"! After all, we have a Whale of a Story to share with you: the story of brash, young, scared military man Brian Flanagan and his dreams of owning the city of New York, one spinning bottle of liquor at a time. New features are debuted: "Drink of the Ep", "Flair in the Air", and "Who Let the Spoilers Out?". We pick apart the film’s depiction of masculinity in the 1980s, fill you in on the latest news and gossip about Gilles Gothic, examine the roots of George W. Bush’s imperialist aims, and check up on your favorite Long Island City subway stops. As we’ve always said, there has to be a crossroad, a place to draw the line. And as always, we attempt to answer the question, "what is theirs and what is mine?" The answer may surprise you.

It's a very special Eureka Podcast as we are joined by Brian Flanagan of Liar City, the podcast about lies for liars.  We get right into it discussing some of our favorite episodes including the now famous Michael Jackson show in which Brian breaks down the lies behind MJ's demise.  Naturally, this brings the conversation to Bill Cosby and Jeremy somehow comes to his defense.  Brian & Jeremy discuss some of their own favorite lies and Craig proves himself to be the anomaly he is by revealing he doesn't really fib. All this and much, MUCH more in the latest installment of Eureka Podcast!   Make sure to check Liar City out.  The latest episode is about the fall of Fatty Arbuckle after the scandal that rocked Hollywood in the 1920's. http://liarcity.com/fattys-in-a-little-jam/   Follow Brian on Twitter @clapyrhands & the show @liarcitypodcast.  Check out their Facebook page as well:  https://www.facebook.com/liarcity/.   Social Media Show:  @eurekapodcast Craig:  @anaveragegatsby Jeremy:  @aintnoswayze Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/eurekapodcast/   The closing song is "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers - because we're a couple of hacks & that song was mentioned during the show.

It's a reasonably Happy New Year as two-thirds of One Life Left mark their first day back in the office with resolutions, chat, songs, mistakes and one off-the-cuff comment we regret (cut from this podcast; you really should try and listen live). Yes, OLL is back with a bang, though not as big a bang as it would be had Ste returned from his holidays in time. He's stuck in Lapland, arguing with Father Christmas about the existence of Peter Molyneux. So cue emergency call to I'm Dave Green, who ably fills Simon's shoes whilst Simon occupies Ste's red high heels and pretty dress. This week's show is filled to the brim with actual gaming chat about games, a special "best-of" 2008's news special with Ann (who's ill), a special Derek Williams' Free Market Economy with Derek Williams (who's poorly), a very special Craig "The Rage" McClellan with Craig "The Rage" McClellan (who's sick), a distraught Taliah, and, well, spoilers etc. One thing we're certainly not spoilerising is the identity of our incredibly incredible special guest next week, who's reasonably certain he'll make it. A few clues inside; join the speculation on the forum, but whatever you do, do send us stuff to ask him or her (it's him). Music this week is: • An excellent Super Shinobi/Madonna mashup by Brian Flanagan (cut short on the show: download the full version from the site shortly) • Fever, by show-saver Spencer Lee • The loading music to a classic C64 s-s-s-shmup by Rob Hubbard. Apologies to those who sent musical contributions (and we're unsure of whether we can name); we should have played your songs, but Simon panicked at the desk and forgot his running order. They're in the bank, so to speak. Normal service will be resumed next week, when Stephen! returns, just in time to welcome (hopefully!) our very, very, very special guest.
