Edition No239 | 02-09-2025 - Autocrats assemble. These are not nice people. Not kind people, nor generous or moral. They have reached the top of the pile in their respective countries, many of which are authoritarian or quasi authoritarian regimes. What does it take to achieve that, an to stay top of the pile for years, sometimes decades. For a start you must be the biggest bully in the playground, the most vicious fish in the pond. You may have had to dispose of rivals, - both authoritarian or democratic. Probably silence many journalists and critics. Subvert their legal systems and institutions of government. In a word, these people are the biggest C.U.N.T.S in their respective societies, most have no accountability to their populations, and some have thieved and raped their populations of resources and opportunities. Now, they have gathered in China, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit (SVO meets SCO).At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, we witnessed what can only be described as a global warm embrace of authoritarian regimes — even as the world burns from war, repression, and in Ukraine stolen children. At the heart of this embrace, Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Narendra Modi posed as a new triumvirate of international order, with cheering applause for Russia's war machine. But it is an alliance of disorder and death. ----------SOURCES: https://edition.cnn.com/2025/09/01/china/china-putin-xi-meeting-sco-summit-intl-hnkhttps://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/9/2/chinas-victory-day-military-parade-whos-attending-and-why-it-mattershttps://abcnews.go.com/International/north-koreas-kim-crosses-china-meet-xi-putin/story?id=125172027https://www.independent.co.uk/asia/east-asia/kim-jong-un-arrive-china-victory-parade-vladimir-putin-b2818199.htmlhttps://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/9/2/china-russia-pledge-new-global-order-at-shanghai-cooperation-summithttps://news.sky.com/story/chinese-russian-and-indian-leaders-seek-to-show-unity-and-push-for-new-world-order-in-beijing-meeting-13423244https://www.reuters.com/world/china/putin-thanks-xi-his-dear-friend-warm-welcome-china-2025-09-02/https://www.politico.eu/article/chinas-xi-welcomes-putin-modi-trump-roils-global-relations/----------Partner on this video: KYIV OF MINE 'Kyiv of Mine' is a documentary series about Ukraine's beautiful capital, Kyiv. Yaroslav Trofimov is Chief Foreign-Affairs Correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of several books including Our Enemies Will Vanish: The Russian Invasion and Ukraine's War of Independence. Yaroslav shares what he experienced on the ground in Ukraine and the moral clarity of the war as compared to the wars and conflicts in the Middle East and other parts of the world. He also warns about the dystopic realities of modern warfare, and highlights how the experiences of the Ukrainian people in this war are a reminder of how life for all us can change very quickly and in the most horrible ways. And of course, Yaroslav explains how everyday people in Ukraine are fighting back against the Russian invaders -- and helping to save our animal friends who have no real say or choice in the evils of men. I spoke with Yaroslav some months ago. I was saving our conversation for a low moment such as this when Trump met with Putin to “negotiate” peace and the future of Ukraine – and the President of the United States chose to further align the country in the orbit of autocrats instead of as the leader of the free world. Never forget the people of Ukraine and how they are a beacon for all free people around the world. WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? //The Wire//2300Z September 1, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: EARTHQUAKE STRIKES AFGHANISTAN. BLACKOUT REPORTED IN VENEZUELA. VEHICLE RAMMING ATTACK CONDUCTED AT RUSSIAN CONSULATE IN AUSTRALIA. PROTESTS CONTINUE IN CHICAGO DURING LABOR DAY CRIME WAVE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Germany: A 16-year-old Ukrainian refugee was murdered over the weekend, after an illegal immigrant from Iraq pushed her in front of a train in Friedland. The migrant was not arrested at the scene, but after DNA evidence was gathered authorities arrested and placed him in a psychiatric facility where he awaits a decision on whether or not he will be charged for the murder.Analyst Comment: This case is important as the local media immediately tried to paint this story as the girl taking her own life. However, local authorities have confirmed that this is not the case. At the moment it's hard to independently confirm, but some sources claim that the victim was also speaking on the phone with her grandfather at the time of the attack, and remarked that a group of migrants were following her before the call was cut short. If this detail is true, this could be what triggered the investigation in the first place as there are no security cameras at the train station where she was murdered.Afghanistan: This morning an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.0 struck near the border with Pakistan. Hundreds of casualties have been reported, with the hardest-hit regions being the eastern districts of Kunar and Nangarhar.Venezuela: Over the weekend, large-scale blackouts were reported throughout Caracas and several outlying cities. Separately, the tensions between the United States and Venezuela continue, as both sides remain at a heightened state of military readiness throughout the region.Analyst Comment: As the US Navy continues power-projection operations in the area, many have been quick to link the blackouts in Venezuela with the American ships parked off the coast. However, this incident is probably more related to Venezuela's crippled electrical infrastructure, rather than any intervention by the United States. The United States is certainly not above sabotage in Venezuela, so it's certainly possible. However Venezuela has been "rationing" electricity for many years now, which has included the implementation of unplanned (and unannounced) rolling blackouts. This history indicates that if the U.S. were to bomb or sabotage electrical substations in Venezuela, it's doubtful that anyone would notice anything out of the ordinary.Australia: Yesterday a vehicle ramming attack was carried out at the Russian Consulate in Sydney. One unidentified man drove his vehicle up to the Entry Control Point (ECP) for the facility, and after being approached by security personnel, proceeded to ram his vehicle into the gates. The man was arrested at the scene, and one security guard was injured by broken glass while attempting to extract the man from the vehicle. No further details have been provided regarding the motivation for the attack.-HomeFront-Illinois: Throughout Chicago, several anti-Trump demonstrations were held over the weekend, which mostly took the form of opposing the recent anti-crime initiatives posed by the White House. Separately, a few dozen shootings were reported throughout the city over the weekend, which has included approximately 8x murders.Texas: An 11-year-old was shot in Houston after taking part in a growing trend around the United States. The child was shot after allegedly engaging in a game of "ding dong ditch" which prompted the homeowner to engage the suspects, killing one of them.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As with every event these days, many media sources leave out critical context. For instance, the recent rise of "ding dong ditch" "pranks" around the United States, aren't
Georgijs Ivanovs started the Ukraine Matters channel in 2007, and it has garners 11.5 m views. He started the channel to explain the situation surrounding the war in Ukraine in simple terms. Like myself, he is not Ukrainian, nor is he a military expert. But he has been to Ukraine many times and seen it almost fully (except for Odesa region). He has a lot of good friends in Ukraine, and in fact his wife is Ukrainian, and so feels extremely connected to the invasion that scaled up in February 2022. ----------DESCRIPTION: Ukraine's Crisis and Europe's Response: In-Depth Analysis with Georgijs IvanovsJoin us for a compelling discussion with Georgijs Ivanovs from the channel 'Ukraine Matters' as we delve into the complexities of the Ukraine-Russia conflict. With both the Scottish and UK Parliaments back in session today, there is a back to school vibe for this week's podcast. After a quite week last week everything is kicking up a gear. We look at the Keir Starmer's mini mini reshuffle, which is a lot less sensational than expected, but seems to be centralizing power in Number 10. We talk about the number of departures from the Scottish Conservatives, and the fact that one of them, Graham Simpson going to Reform, might jeopardize the recall petition idea that he is pushing through as a private member's Bill.We also talk about the Scottish Green's leadership election and what that might mean in terms of new leadership, the energy price cap, and Kemi Badenoch: drill, baby, drill. Russian soldiers were told that they would be the country's 'new elite' by President Putin. But many of them have reported being robbed and scammed out of the money that they earned fighting on the Ukrainian front lines. They also face mental health problems, and post-traumatic stress disorder after months or years at war, but suitable treatment is scarce and hard for them to find. BBC Russian's Sergei Goryashko has been looking into the soldiers who have been robbed and scammed, whilst Sofya Volyanova has spoken to the people in Russia attempting to treat soldiers for PTSD and depression. South Korea banned dog meat in the country last year, and the practice will be entirely phased out by 2027 ending a generations long practice. Hyunjung Kim of BBC Korean has been speaking to people affected by the ban and explains why it got put in place. This episode of The Documentary comes to you from The Fifth Floor, the show at the heart of global storytelling, with BBC journalists from all around the world. Edition No235 | 30-08-2025 - War is the grease that helps the wheels turn in Putin's regime. Russia has a history of militarism, and war creates opportunities and circumstances for some powerful Russians to thrive – while the drumbeat of war provides mood music for Putin's propagandists, to keep the population distracted. War and chaos are essential elements of Putin's business model. Trump is the apprentice to Putin's mature dictator. Is he about to learn the lesson that war can help entrench and extend the life of your regime? Help you to rig and even suspend normal democratic processes and democratic culture, such as free and fair elections? War Drums and Ballots: Venezuela, the U.S. Armada, and the Temptation of “Small Victorious Wars. In this episode we're sailing straight into rough water: an increasingly brutal regime in Caracas that only just stared down a popular uprising, U.S. warships surging toward Venezuela's coast, and a stateside whisper campaign about whether a “small victorious war” could morph into a shortcut around bad projections for midterm election results for Trump. We'll also unpack that awkward moment when Donald Trump's demands for Ukrainian elections collided with… Ukrainian law, and Trump had a revelation. Buckle up. It's nice, but it is necessary to explore the political possibilities, no matter how dark and strange. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/aug/29/venezuela-gunboat-diplomacy-trump-madurohttps://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20250826-venezuela-deploys-warships-drones-as-us-destroyers-draw-nearhttps://www.aljazeera.com/video/the-take-2/2025/8/28/why-are-us-warships-going-to-venezuelahttps://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/8/26/us-warships-head-to-venezuela-fight-against-cartels-or-imperial-ambitionhttps://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-26/venezuela-to-deploy-ships-to-oil-exporting-hub-after-us-movehttps://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/nicolas-maduro-karoline-leavitt-south-america-donald-trump-chatham-house-b2816576.htmlhttps://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/why-are-us-warships-heading-toward-venezuela/ ----------DESCRIPTION:Geopolitical Showdown: US-Venezuela Tensions and Political CalculationsIn this episode of Silicon Bytes, we delve into the escalating tensions between the US and Venezuela. Edition No236 | 30-08-2025 - The Assassination of Andrii Parubii, and What It Says About Moscow's War on Democracy. A gunman in daylight, in a city far from the frontline, a courier disguise, eight shots, and democracy takes a bullet to the heart. In a nation that's been fighting for its existence and control over its future since Maidan, and indeed centuries before, has lost one of its civic leaders, and a key parliamentarian. Someone who was at the forefront of Ukraine's revolutions to assert democracy in the post-Soviet era. If it is proved that Moscow was behind it, which is a high probability, then the choice to snuff out the life of Andrii Parubii was cold and calculating. It was a direct attack on democracy and freedom. Today we unpack the cold-blooded killing of Andrii Parubii in Lviv—who he was, why this crosses a line, how Ukrainians are responding, and what this murder reveals about the Kremlin's contempt for democratic culture. (Reuters) What do we know? Just after midday on Aug. 30, 2025, Andrii Parubii — former speaker of Ukraine's parliament and a sitting MP — was shot dead in Lviv. Prosecutors say an unidentified assailant fired several rounds and fled; a citywide manhunt began under the code-name “Siren/Sirena.” (Українська правда)----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: Kyiv Independent — Ukraine's ex-parliament speaker shot dead in Lviv (Aug. 30, 2025). What would you do if you had to give birth in the middle of a war? In this episode, I sit down with Natalia, a Ukrainian mother of two, to hear her incredible story of freebirthing her second child during the 2022 Russian invasion. After one homebirth, Natalia chose to walk an even more radical path with her second—preparing to give birth without medical support, while bombs dropped around her and sirens became part of daily life. What's most striking is that on the day her son was born, the chaos paused. For the first time in weeks, there was silence. A stillness descended over her city, allowing Natalia to give birth in a sacred bubble of peace amidst the war. A divine mercy. We speak candidly about what it was like to prepare for a physiological birth during trauma and survival mode. We explore how she tended to herself postpartum while navigating a broken system that refused to acknowledge her birth. We talk about stopping her hemorrhage, the bureaucratic battle to register her baby, and the heartbreaking search for breast milk when her body struggled to produce. This conversation is a living testament to maternal instinct, spiritual resilience, and the unshakable power of sovereign birth—even in the most unimaginable of circumstances.Inside this episode:How Natalia prepared for freebirth while her country was under siegeThe eerie silence that fell over her city as she birthed her sonNavigating postpartum hemorrhage alone—and what she did to stop itHer struggle to obtain a birth certificate in a system that denied her realityWhat it took to find donor breast milk for her newbornThe spiritual strength and sovereignty required to give birth during warTimestamps:[00:00] Introduction[12:14] The beginning of a wild pregnancy and the realization that she would give birth alone[16:42] Preparing for a freebirth as war begins[21:19] Fleeing home as war erupts during late pregnancy[26:16] Giving birth in the middle of war and finding unexpected peace[32:33] Facing postpartum hemorrhage and delivering the placenta[44:53] Struggling to register a home birth during war and navigating survival choicesResources Mentioned:The Power of Women by Sister MorningStar | BookSister Morningstar | WebsiteIf you want to connect with Natalia, follow her on Instagram and visit her website.Find more from Emilee on Instagram, YouTube and the Free Birth Society website.Disclaimer: Free Birth Society, LLC of North Carolina shares personal and educational stories and experiences related to freebirth and holistic care. Overnight Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected proposals for a buffer zone between Ukrainian and Russian forces as part of a peace deal. His comments followed a report suggesting European leaders were considering a 40km (25-mile) buffer zone as part of either a ceasefire or longer-term agreement. In the same week, Russia launched its biggest attack on the Ukrainian capital this month, damaging EU and British offices. The strikes took place less than two weeks after US President Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Alaska, hoping to advance his peace efforts. The BBC's Russian Editor Vitaly Shevshenko talks to Susie from London.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 brought a tragic close to a thirty-year period of history that began with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the reopening of Russia to the West after six decades of Soviet isolation. The opening lasted for three tumultuous decades and ended with a new closing, driven by the Ukrainian war, the imposition of Western sanctions, and the Russian responses to them. In Perfect Storm: Russia's Failed Economic Opening, the Hurricane of War and Sanctions, and the Uncertain Future (Oxford University Press, 2025), Russia analyst Thane Gustafson reinterprets the story of Russia's failed opening to the West, focusing on its economic, technological, and social aspects, and the role they played in its ultimate failure. These parallel events are essential for understanding what happened and what went wrong. Yet they have received much less attention than the military and geopolitical aspects of the current conflict. Gustafson tells the story of the West's entry into Russia, the arrival of Russians into the West, and the conflicting emotions and responses these aroused on both sides, contributing to the ultimate breakdown of relations and the unprecedented hurricane of Western sanctions. The book concludes with an examination of possible futures under a new generation of leaders. A measured and nuanced account of the evolution of Russia's economic relations with the world, Perfect Storm illuminates the longer history of Russia's opening to the West, from its achievements and disappointments to the complexity of the post-invasion sanctions regime and Russia's responses to them. Thane Gustafson is Professor of Government at Georgetown University. He is the author of many books, including Klimat (2021), The Bridge (2020), and Wheel of Fortune (2012). Despite weeks of whirlwind American diplomacy, Russia sent wave after wave of drones and missiles across Kyiv and other cities on Thursday. It was the fiercest attack on the Ukrainian capital since President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met two weeks ago in Alaska, and the clearest indication yet of the Kremlin's resolve to continue its bombardment of Ukraine, leaving the two sides no closer to securing a diplomatic off-ramp.Host Caryn Ceolin speaks with Oleksa Drachewych, an assistant professor of history at Western University, about the challenges in forging a lasting peace in the largest land war in Europe since World War II. There have been multiple civilian casualties in Kyiv after sustained Russian airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital overnight. The UK Foreign Office has told Moscow to "stop this senseless killing" and earlier summoned Russia's ambassador in the UK to protest. But will these latest attacks have any bearing on international attempts to broker a peace deal?To examine the fallout, Jamie and Vitaly are joined by Ukraine correspondent James Waterhouse and BBC Verify's Olga Robinson. They also discuss Vladimir Putin's legitimacy under the Russian constitution, Poland's place in the conflict, and whether China could take a more prominent diplomatic role as Russia's president prepares to travel to Beijing. You can fill out our audience questionnaire here: bit.ly/ukrainecastfeedbackToday's episode is presented by Jamie Coomarasamy and Vitaly Shevchenko. Some say that the strikes at the British council office were actually the debris of Ukrainian missile defenses, whereas others say it was a deliberate strike. Likewise, what was struck in Russia is not entirely confirmable, though Ukraine has increasingly started to target legitimate and militarily-valuable oil refineries over the past few months. Either way, this latest spat likely won't completely derail diplomatic efforts, but it will probably pump the breaks on peace talks for a few days.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - The White House has allegedly reversed the decision to admit 600,000 Chinese students, backtracking on the policy to state that the total number of Chinese visas issued per year will remain as before, at around 300,000.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The reversal of the 600,000 Chinese students policy is a positive move for national security, but this will probably come back again at some point. Continuing political tradition, the White House cannot admit that their policy decision was wrong, so they have to phrase this as simply a misunderstanding. This probably came after defense officials got involved as the national security concerns are very openly observable on this issue. On the same exact day as this announcement, SECDEF Pete Hegseth released a video explaining a recent discovery at the Department of Defense. Pentagon systems were accessed by unauthorized contractors (who just so happened to be Chinese nationals employed by Microsoft) to service Department of Defense servers, and that Pentagon data was being stored on data servers in China. This short video, though causing more questions than answers, is the tip of the iceberg regarding what is very likely to be a very big problem. A two-minute video of the SECDEF explaining that the entire existence of the Pentagon was probably breached by Chinese spies embedded at the Microsoft corporation (and that the practice has been going on for years), is not a good sign. It has long been suspected by anyone remotely connected with defense industry that any byte of data more complicated than a pocket calculator has probably been breached by the Chinese military. This has been the quiet assumption for many years, and the SECDEF's recent statement confirms that this idea is certainly more true than anyone would like to think. Considering these developments (and the overwhelming backlash) the White House will probably seek to quiet down the import of Chinese students for a while. However, this will be something to keep an eye on just in case politicians try to slip this by the American people once again.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

At least 19 people have been killed and dozens injured after a huge drone and missile attack by Russia on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, overnight. The Court of Appeal has been hearing legal argument from the Home Office and the owner of the Bell Hotel in Epping against a judge's decision to stop asylum seekers being housed there. Edition No234 | 28-08-2025 - Kyiv has awoken under a pall of smoke again. Russia last night launched the second-largest mass strike of the war, according to multiple outlets, hitting homes and — pointedly, deliberately — sites tied to Europe and the UK. The British Council's building is smashed beyond use. The EU delegation compound is damaged. The EU building is classed as a diplomatic site, and thus an extensive of European sovereign territory and the British Council is an important extension of the British government abroad. Make not mistake, these are a direct challenge, attacks on the UK and EU, their property, power, influence and authority. More importantly, children are dead, and huge numbers of Ukrainians killed. At the same time Peskov and other criminals warble on about being interested about peace. At this point, who should we be angrier at, Moscow for behaving in exactly the way we expect them to, or at our leaders for not taking decisive action, and the media for reprinting the drivel that comes from Moscow, often without appropriate context. That being, Russia always lies. So many headlines blare out, Moscow's actions sabotage the peace process, but that is to fall for the con, and to indirectly support Moscow and the appeasement of its actions. The truth is, there is no peace process to sabotage. And there has not been a serious once since Putin invaded, at least anything that would deliver peace, security and justice for Ukraine. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: Sky News live — “UK summons Putin's ambassador after British Council bombed in Kyiv; second-biggest strike of the war.” (Aug. 28, 2025)The Guardian live — “UK and EU summon top Russian diplomats after British Council and EU offices hit.” (Aug. 28, 2025)Reuters — “Russian missiles pound Ukraine, damage EU and British offices.” (Aug. 28, 2025)Kyiv Independent — “‘Moscow's true answer to peace efforts' — mass attack kills 19, including children.” (Aug. 28, 2025)TIME — “Russia strikes EU & British Council buildings in Kyiv; death toll rises.” (Aug. 28, 2025)Washington Post — “Europe furious as deadly Russian attack damages prominent Kyiv offices.” (Aug. 28, 2025)PBS/AP — “Major Russian attack includes rare strikes on center of Kyiv.” (Aug. 28, 2025)NHPR/AP — “Four children among dead… EU & British Council buildings damaged; envoys summoned.” (Aug. 28, 2025)The Times (UK) — “Second biggest strikes; 19 dead; British Council office damaged.” (Aug. 28, 2025)----------

This week on Conflicted, host Thomas Small is joined by an old friend and former housemate when they studied in Syria together, Jakub Jajcay. A man of many talents, Jakub studied Arabic with Thomas in Damascus before becoming a Slovakian army officer, while also continuing his studies about the Middle East, including working towards a PHD on Lebanese politics. When Russia invaded Ukraine, he decided to put his professional skills to use, joining the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a foreign volunteer. This episode is a raw, firsthand account of his experience of modern warfare. Jakub recounts his experiences as both an infantryman in the trenches and a drone operator, revealing surprising and often grim truths about the war's reality. The pair discuss a number of misconceptions about the war, from the overrated influence of Western weapons to the true nature of combat in the 21st century. They also dive into the effectiveness of drones, and the deeply personal motivations of Ukrainian soldiers, revealing a quiet, resolute patriotism that is less about grand political ideology and more about the fundamental desire for a sovereign homeland. This is a powerful and sobering conversation that grounds the abstract debates about international law and geopolitics in the grit, mud, and courage of those living it on the ground.
