Hello animals love to kill! Yikes!
In this episode of The Fur Real Podcast, we head to the Arctic with Dr. Steven Amstrup of Polar Bears International, the world's leading organization dedicated to the conservation of polar bears and their sea ice habitat. With climate change melting the Arctic at an alarming rate, polar bears are being pushed to their limits—swimming longer distances, struggling to hunt, and adapting to a rapidly changing environment. Dr. Amstrup shares incredible facts about these powerful animals: their fur is actually translucent, their skin is black, and they're capable of swimming for days across icy waters. But beyond the trivia, this episode dives deep into the urgent challenges they face and what scientists and conservationists are doing to help. Whether you're a polar bear superfan or just polar bear-curious, this episode delivers eye-opening science, expert insights, and a powerful message of hope. www.furrealpodcast.com www.polarbearsinternational.org fb @The Fur Real Podcast fb @Mark A Kyle fb @polarbearsinternational Ig @thefurrealpodcast Ig @markakyle ig@polarbeardsinternational tik tok @The Fur Real Podcast tik tok @polarbearsinternational You Tube @ The Fur Real Podcast You Tube @Polarbearsinternational.org Speical thanks to J Jig Cicero @jjigcicero for our music intro and outro..you rock!!! Don't look for restraint here, things are about to get wild! This week's comic is the Tarzan-influenced The Witcher: Wild Animals, a twist-filled blend of circle-of-life philosophy, extreme veganism and frighteningly feral action that left us wanting more…whiskey. Fortunately, we've paired it with the superbly simian Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt, a sweet, straightforward scotch that kept the conversation from getting too civilized. After all, when there are important things to discuss like whether drowners smell like fish, why mothers should handle their own homicides, if Geralt should ask for a refund on his armor and whether there's ever a good reason for a man to drop trou while relieving himself, we wouldn't want something as silly as good behavior getting in the way.
You've heard of the Big Bad Wolf, Call of the Wild, and countless other wolf tales… but have you ever heard of Sea Wolves? These extraordinary wolves are unlike any others on Earth. Joining us today is Dr. Chris Darimont—a professor at the University of Victoria, the Director of Science at the Raincoast Conservation Foundation, and one of the world's leading experts on Sea Wolves. He's here to share their fascinating story. These wild canines roam the remote coastline of British Columbia, living in one of the most stunning and untamed environments on the planet. But here's what makes them truly unique: over 80% of their diet comes from the ocean! They feast on fish, crabs, seals, and even barnacles, adapting to a marine lifestyle in ways no other wolf species has. And get this—they don't just wade in the water; they're incredible long-distance swimmers, sometimes covering up to 7 miles between islands! Imagine spotting a wolf slicing through the waves like an apex predator of both land and sea. If you haven't seen the award-winning documentary Takaya: Lone Wolf, put it on your must-watch list. It tells the unbelievable true story of a lone Sea Wolf who captivated the world with his journey. Scientists, conservationists, and Indigenous Nations are working together to better understand and protect these wolves. The First Nations have long believed Sea Wolves bring good fortune and prosperity—so by the time you finish this episode, maybe a little luck will come your way too! "I really don't want to give the impression that I think it is easy to make predictable, controlled, safe interventions in wild systems where there are many species interacting. I don't think it's easy, but I don't see any reason to think that it's impossible. And I think we have been making progress. I think there's every reason to think that if we continue doing research, both at the theoretical level — How do ecosystems work? What sorts of things are likely to have what sorts of indirect effects? — and then also at the practical level — Is this intervention a good idea? — I really think we're going to come up with plenty of things that would be helpful to plenty of animals." —Cameron Meyer ShorbIn today's episode, host Luisa Rodriguez speaks to Cameron Meyer Shorb — executive director of the Wild Animal Initiative — about the cutting-edge research on wild animal welfare.Links to learn more, highlights, and full transcript. They cover:How it's almost impossible to comprehend the sheer number of wild animals on Earth — and why that makes their potential suffering so important to consider. How bad experiences like disease, parasites, and predation truly are for wild animals — and how we would even begin to study that empirically. The tricky ethical dilemmas in trying to help wild animals without unintended consequences for ecosystems or other potentially sentient beings.Potentially promising interventions to help wild animals — like selective reforestation, vaccines, fire management, and gene drives. Why Cameron thinks the best approach to improving wild animal welfare is to first build a dedicated research field — and how Wild Animal Initiative's activities support this. The many career paths in science, policy, and technology that could contribute to improving wild animal welfare. And much more.Chapters:Cold open (00:00:00)Luisa's intro (00:01:04)The interview begins (00:03:40)One concrete example of how we might improve wild animal welfare (00:04:04)Why should we care about wild animal suffering? This week, John Dorney joins us in northern Scotland to investigate the disappearance of the Ninth Legion — only to discover that there are things here even more terrible than the Roman army, things that can only be fought with trust and empathy and music. It's The Eaters of Light. Notes and links Crash (2004) starts with a voiceover by Don Cheadle, laying out the terms of the metaphorical link between car crashes and human interactions generally. It's not a very popular movie, not only because of its superficial approach to issues of race, but also because it won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Picture instead of Brokeback Mountain. Richard mentions American YA fiction writer Scott Westerfield, particularly the Uglies series with its teenage protagonist. He also mentions William Golding's 1954 novel Lord of the Flies, where a group of schoolchildren stranded without adults on a deserted island, quickly revert to savagery. Brian Vernel was born in 1990, so he was 26 or 27 when he played Lucius in this episode, and 32 when he played far-right extremist Curly in the first season of Slow Horses in 2022. Kar's speech about the depredations of the Roman Army is taken from the Agricola by Tacitus, a short biography of his father-in-law, chronicling, among other things his campaigns in northern Britain. Tacitus depicts the Caledonian leader Calgacus making the speech just before the Battle of Mount Graupius, in which his forces were defeated by the Romans. You can read the speech in translation here. This week's monster is based on very common depictions found in Pictish carvings of an animal called the Pictish Beast. Some depictions are found among the carvings seen in this episode. Tania Bell is a companion to the Eighth Doctor, first appearing in Big Finish's Stranded in 2020 — the first transgender companion to appear in Doctor Who. She is played by Rebecca Root. Get ready for a wild and prickly ride in this episode! Have you ever heard porcupines referred to as Quill Pig, Quillback, or Porky? You will now! Join me as I chat with the world-renowned porcupine expert, Professor Zvi Sever, to uncover the fascinating world of these spiky creatures. From their surprising nicknames to their quirky love lives—did you know porcupines are monogamous, and the males take on 54% of the childcare duties? We'll dive into the two types of porcupines—New World and Old World—and learn how these animals are found all around the globe, even considered a delicacy in some countries. Plus, you'll hear how porcupines shed their quills just like dogs shed their hair, with the quills starting soft and becoming the sharp spikes we know them for. But that's not all! Professor Sever also presents his groundbreaking "Ethics Code for Space" that he delivered to the United Nations, exploring where porcupines fit into humanity's future in space. This episode is perfect for curious minds who love animals—and those wondering how our prickly friends might help guide our adventures beyond Earth! www.furrealpodcast.com fb The Fur Real Podcast ig @thefurrealpodcast tik tok @thefurrealpodcast Speical thanks to J Jig Cicero @jjigcicero for our music intro and outro..you rock!!! Tony and Sam discuss being from the Isle of Skye, wandering barefoot around India, fishing with indigenous people in Guyana, why the person who's catching the most fish is probably the person most embedded in the environment, how humans are deeply related to all of creation, why it's bad that we sanitize hunting, how conducting difficult outdoors tasks makes you a better steward of creation, rabbit hunting with ferrets, the practice of fly fishing, and more.
