Episode 300 of Countermelody is upon us, and I have chosen today to bring you the German-American soprano Helen Donath in all her glory, performing Lieder of both Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert, the vast majority accompanied by her husband, German conductor, pianist, and scholar Klaus Donath. With their mutual attention to subtle musical and textual detail, they make ideal interpreters for these songs, often structured as strophic or modified strophic settings. Both live and studio recordings are featured, including a live 1978 performance of Schubert's Mignon-Lieder, set to texts by Goethe sung by the mysterious waif Mignon in his novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre. Another recurring theme in many of these Lieder is the longing for spring, which, even as we are only at the cusp of autumn, is something that we are already anticipating. Guest performers include tenor Peter Schreier, baritone Hermann Prey, clarinettist Dieter Klöcker, and pianist Leonard Hokanson. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Orna Donath is an Israeli sociologist, a teacher at Tel Aviv University, and the author of the landmark book, "Regretting Motherhood." During our conversation, Orna talks about the women she profiled in her book, the difference between regretting motherhood and having ambivalence towards it, and why and how women end up in a life where they regret being mothers. Orna also talks about regretting motherhood as one of our world's taboo topics, the idea that being childless is "selfish," what it is like for women to "come out" as regretting parenthood, and whether the desire to be child-free is an innate orientation. This is one of the most important and interesting conversations I've ever had. Amazingly, Orna's work is the first of its kind: a study that gives voice to women whose experience of motherhood has been an unequivocal mistake. We often, I think, like to believe such people don't exist, hence the shame that's often associated with those who affirm this experience. Orna has helped to bring such women out of the shadows and, I hope, begun to lessen the stigma of those who honestly share the regret they feel about an irreversible, life-changing decision. If we are to live in a world that respects and encourages individuality and personal preferences, then Orna's work is a consciousness-raising offering. I hope that it will help millions of women learn that they are not alone, and reduce the likelihood of people being influenced by conformity and peer pressure over honoring one's inner compass.------------Support via VenmoSupport on SubstackSupport on Patreon------------Show notesRate on SpotifyRate on Apple PodcastsSocial media and all episodes------------(00:00) Intro (04:27) The genesis of the study "Regretting Motherhood" (06:46) Defining regret (10:25) Ambivalence vs. regret (13:24) Similarities with "coming out" as gay (16:55) A first-of-its-kind study(20:25) Quotes from women (23:55) Completness vs. deficiency (29:55) Normative vs. normal (32:57) Is being childfree selfish? Today's episode is a celebration of the Texas-born, German-assimilated soprano Helen Donath. Very few singers can boast of a career lasting more than 50 years which yielded such consistently superb vocalism and artistry. Donath began as a soubrette with lyric-coloratura capabilities which blossomed into a jugendlich dramatisch voice capable of successfully assuming roles in Wagner, Strauss, and Weber. Today's episode has two “gimmicks,” the first of which is that all of the selections are sung in German, even if they were originally set in French or Italian. The second gimmick is that strewn in amongst the other selections, there is a smattering of holiday-related material including works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Humperdinck, and Pfitzner. Other composers heard include Otto Nicolai, Friedrich von Flotow, Paul Hindemith, as well as numerous examples of Donath's peerless Mozart singing and a generous helping of operettas by Lehár, Millöcker, and Johann Strauss II. Vocal guest stars are legion, and include Julia Varady, Siegfried Jerusalem, Anna Moffo, Peter Schreier, Edda Moser, Theo Adam, Werner Hollweg, and Günther Leib in performances conducted by Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Kurt Eichhorn, Rafael Kubelik, Herbert Blomstedt, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Bernhard Klee, Otmar Suitner, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Gerd Albrecht, and Willi Boskovsky, as well as Klaus Donath, Helen's husband since 1965. While those of us without children are frequently warned of the possibility of regretting their absence, a story we don't often hear is of the parents who regret having children. In this episode with Israeli sociologist Dr. Orna Donath, we unpack her groundbreaking work on this highly stigmatized topic of motherhood regret. Orna helps us understand the distinctions between ambivalence and regret, as well as non-natalism and anti-natalism. We also discuss her thoughts on the stringent control that society has over our emotions and actions, specifically as they relate to procreative decisions. From voluntary childlessness to the influence of neoliberalism on feminist thought, we end with reflection on how pronatalism is inherently oppressive and a cause for much confusion and suffering for parents and non-parents alike, while also being ecologically destructive. Just as drips of water over millennia can carve out caves and canyons, one small mitzvah multiplied several times over can move mountains as well. That's the belief of Dr. Jonathan Donath, a legendary chiropractor in White Plains, New York, who got an epiphany in 2018 while dropping a dollar bill into the tzedakah box at his shul. “No matter how much money I give to charity, I still get a mitzvah every time I drop a dollar in,” he thought. “How can I guarantee that I do this mitzvah every day for a buck?” He looked for an organization that was doing this and couldn't find one. From Tant que je serai, I'm Tsippora and this is the podcast Tant que je serai Noire. A series of episodes that questions black women desire and non-desire to have children. In this podcast my guests are challenging social and cultural norms to push people to discover different points of views and to think differently. Like me, at the young age of 16, my guest Orna Donath knew with certainty that she would never be a mother. Orna Donath, a Doctor of Sociology who studies the field of non-motherhood, motherhood, and regret. She is a social activist and the writer of the book Regretting Motherhood, published in two thousand and fifteen, which was translated into fourteen languages. To Orna, this self-realization of not being a mother was not as extraordinary as society would want her to believe. To her, it was something normal. Just as common as choosing to become a mother. Another interesting point is the fact that there are women out there who have become mothers and regret the decision and that is so taboo and so stigmatized that it's rarely spoken about. With Orna we talked about the social pressures around motherhood, the stigma around regret, and why it's such a sensitive subject for mothers. I am so happy to had the opportunity to discuss with such an interesting woman, thank you Orna. Enjoy !

Slice of MIT: Stories from MIT Presented by the MIT Alumni Association

A conversation with Judith Donath SM '86, PhD '97, whose book The Social Machine was published by MIT Press in May 2014. The book is a chronicle of Donath's projects in social media dating from the late 1980s, long before the term was in vogue. Read more: http://bit.ly/1TjtJwr Donath also traces the rise of social media to its roots in Usenet groups and discussion boards to the conquests of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Donath explores why these media thrived while others failed, and the book serves as both a guide for researchers studying social media and a cautionary tale for casual users who don’t always question them critically enough. The conversation about the Web and social media skews toward a discussion of the potential for connections, and how both individuals and organizations are using the media to communicate, to form communities, and to conduct business. Lacking, for the most part, is an investigation of the design of these spaces and how design, both good and bad, encourages or provokes certain kinds of interactions. In her new book, The Social Machine: Designs for Living Online (MIT Press, 2014), Judith Donath, Faculty Fellow at Harvard University's Berkman Center, explores the theory and practice of interface design, and analyzes how design influences online interaction. With a view toward inspiring designers, and others, “to be more radical and thoughtful in their creations,” Donath provides a detailed examination of topics to be considered for beneficial design. Im Rahmen dieser In-vitro-Studie wurden die Systeme IPS Empress 2 (Fa. Ivoclar), Celay (Fa.
