Ray Edwards has worked as a communications strategist and copywriter for some of the most credible voices in leadership and business. He’s worked with New York Times best-selling authors Tony Robbins (author of “Unleash the Giant Within” and “Money: Master the Game,” Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen (co-authors of “Chicken Soup For the Soul”), Jeff Walker (author of “Launch”), and many more. Ray has also written his own books, “Writing Riches,” “Just Get Started: Tips For Starting, Running, & Growing Your Online Business,” and “MoneyWords: Easy-To-Use Copywriting & Marketing Secrets That Help You Sell More.” His marketing campaigns that he’s written or directed have generated an estimated $100 million in sales. In this episode, Ray and Stacy discuss advertising in today’s world. It’s truly never been easier to make money through advertising, and Ray has the secrets that will help you do it right. Some highlights include: “I decided to start my business about 1,007 times.” At minute 2:00, Ray talks about all of the factors that you have to consider when quitting your job and starting your new business. The traits that make an entrepreneur are like any other traits in nature: they can be put to good or bad use. At minute 7:00, Ray talks about why you need to surround yourself with people that see problems and obstacles. Everybody is on Facebook. Advertising on Facebook is a great way to make money, Ray says, and you can make money even if you spend as little as $10 a week. (minute 13:00) Do you have a product that you want to sell more of? (Yes, you do.) At minute 16:00, Ray talks about his new book, “How to Write Copy that Sells,” and this book will help you write sales copy and marketing campaigns in the exact same way he does. “Because of the internet, people can work from anywhere, for anyone.” At minute 24:00, Ray talks about why the size of his team ebbs and flows. It’s a smart idea to be flexible in this way. Victim Mentality - When Bad Things Happen to Good PeopleIt's a fact of life. Bad things happen to good people. Bad things also happen to bad people. Bad things just happen. That fact of life does not matter as much as how we respond to it. The worse thing that can happen to any of us is to succumb to a victim mentality, wallowing in that event in a negative, unhealthy way. The victim mentality can prevent people from taking action towards their success. In many cases, it'll be the very thing that talks you out of making your own path before you ever get started. You've probably heard some of these signs of a victim mentality around you, maybe even spoken by you.I can't get hired in this economyThey replaced me with a machineSomeone took my jobThat boss was out to get meMen cheat! They all cheat! It's okay to grieve. It's not okay to stop living life. At some point, you need to make a choice to get out of the rut of a victim mentality. Do not become a victim to whatever has happened to you. Accept it, then conquer it by moving on with your life.In This EpisodeRay Edwards, author of Writing Riches, shared his story of Parkinson's on ReLaunch Show with Joel BoggessBrandon shares his story of stroke in 1997 and overcomingWe all have a choice to get back up and avoid the victim mentalityJerry shares getting fired and how he picked himself back up immediatelyYou have abilities and resourcesBethany Hamilton losing her arm to a shark, and now inspiring Jerry's daughterMichael J. A huge breakthrough I got out of his "Writing Riches" book was that just taught straightforward copywriting. Not a lot of silly stories or parables mixed in like others teach you "should" have in a book. What a concept! Common Cop Outs (That We Just Solved in Today's Show)   My niche is people with money! Who wouldn't want it? My niche is young people because they're smart, or old people because they have all the money Split test it! I'm going to provide value and give everything away for free I'm still learning I have an idea but it's already been done before I have an idea but I'm waiting on someone else to do the work I'm "waiting" for the right time A Confused Mind Never Buys! Delayed buy button and I can't buy, or I can't buy on an iPad I optin and I can't buy right away, I have to wait for your sequence I have to buy 3 upsells just to get the thing I actually wanted (Lance says: sell what you sell) Blogging or posting without purpose (Add Signature plugin and URL dropping) Too many choices: 2 or 3 at the most. More choices = "experimental" pages (yearly and trial) Optin page: headline, 3 bullet points, call to action, optin form (no video, no testimonials) Sales letter: have you noticed they're way shorter? very few words, even. Software is all about the screenshots and features. Short & To the Point Landing Pages: Keep it Shippable Make the buy button first, before anything else Then headline and subheadline Then the offer stack (what's in it) Then flesh out the bullet points (dream product), story and transitions Then create the product after all that! Healthy, wealthy, or wise What product? It gets them there and delivers a FAST result Testimonials? Don't let that hold you back from launching. No review copies, but have an email sequence asking how they like it. When people use it and respond, piece together a testi from their response. Upsell? This is another "goodie" you don't need right away. It shouldn't "just" be something "bigger" or something lazy like resale rights. It should be "the bigger picture." Five Dimensions of Knowledge from Jonathan Wells of AdvancedLifeSkills.com What we actually know What we think we know What we would like to know What we don't need to know What we used to know Let's add two more (the hardest ones to sell to you have to "sneak them" inside other ones: what we don't know we don't know, and what we need to know Internet Marketing World's largest taxi service owns no taxis (Uber) Largest accommodation provider owns no real estate (Airbnb) Largest retailer has no inventory (Alibaba) Most popular media company creates no content (Facebook) Largest movie house owns no theaters (Netflix) Largest software vendors don't write the apps (Apple & Google) Today's Quotes from Henry Ford You can't build a reputation on what you're going to do. This is an abbreviated list of headline samples from the book "Writing Riches" by one of my favorite authors and podcaster's Ray Edwards. If you buy his book, buy some paper and pencil along with it. This topic starts at 6:35 The How To Headline (how to write headlines that will bring you more downloads) The Testimonial headline (I wish I had found Dave Jackson sooner - I could've save a lot of money) The Give Me headline (Give me 10 days, and I'll get your podcast into iTunes) The Reason Why Headline (The to 3 reasons people fail at launching a podcast - and how to over come them) The Probing Question Headline (Do you know the five things that cause people to unsubscribe podcasts?) The Dominant Emotion (Are you tired of putting out an episode and getting ZERO feedback?) The Command headline (Be the influencer that leads change in the world) The If-Then Headline (If you can upload a picture on Faceboook, then you can upload a media file your hosting). The Warning Headline (Is Soundcloud Going Out of Business?) A headline grabs attention, draws listeners to press play, communicates the big idea, establishes credibility and joins the conversion that is already happening in your audience's head. Common Mistakes That Podcaster's Make With Episode Titles They put the phrase "Episode 123" at the BEGINNING of the headline.  Nobody cares if you're on episode 6, 60, 600, or 6000. What they care about is how you are going to make them laugh, cry, think, groan, educate, or entertain them. If you MUST do this (I understand it makes it easy to search on your website) put it at the end. You can see in the image to the left that you don't get to see what the title is because half of it is EPISODE XXX. The worst offender of this is (unfortunately) the web based version of iTunes. It gives you very little room for your headline. They Put Very Little Thought Into the Podcast Episode Title This is the SECOND/THIRD thing people see when they find your listing (the first being your show artwork/Title of the Show). I know I am super guilty of waiting till I'd done recording the episode, editing, tagging it, listening to it "one more time," and writing the blog post. You're tired, you're excited (maybe), but you are "this close" to being done and you just "throw anything in there" just so you can press publish. If you think about it, from the 1890 to the 1940's they had paperboys who would shout out the headlines to entice people to purchase a paper and get the rest of the story. They weren't scream edition #417! If the podcast title is bad, the podcast will not be heard. Unheard audio impacts no one. (a twist on a John Caples quote). How To Write Good Podcast Episode Titles Typically Headlines do one of the following: Making a promise. Drawing a picture. Stating a fact. Asking a question. Try these steps Start with your audience. Cosmopolitan magazine knows their audience. Write your show notes first. Then write the title. Prime the pump that is your brain. Write several headlines. If you want to read them out loud. Pick the most important benefit and include that benefit in the headlines. Include the product or problem, or guest in the headlines Often email program like Mail Chimp have A/B testing tools so use two headlines and see which one gets more clicks. Automate the Process There are tools such as Headlinr and Freshtitle ($37) are two tools where you enter a subject and they spit out numerous examples of potential headlines/Episode titles. Freshtitle comes with Title Analyzer that rates your headlines and critiques this for you. The Yoast SEO plugin does something similar (and it's free). Headlinr is a browser extension (chrome only), and Fresh Title is software for the Mac or PC. You're smart. You never believed the people who said “there's no money in Social Media”. You thought the people who said Social was all about “pictures of what people had for lunch” or “videos about cats” were missing the point. Yes, those things are popular on Social Media… and it's also true that Social Media is a vital marketing medium that can bring big rewards, monetary and otherwise when done right. Just ask Taylor Swift, Oreo, the folks behind the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, or even President Barack Obama. Just knowing Social Media Marketing is important, however, is not enough. You must know how to do it right – or at least how to not do it wrong. Today's episode will address what I consider to be the 5 Social Media Marketing Mistakes you are most likely making right now… and how to fix them. Tip Of the Week I have not one, but three tips for you this week! Tip #1: Smart Podcast Player First, I'm very excited about the new podcast player we are using on our website. You know, that little “play” button you click to hear audio on the web, such as listening to podcast episode? Up until now we were using a very primitive podcast player. But we just switched the Pat Flynn's Smart Podcast Player. Pat created the player for his own enormously popular podcast. Here's what he says about it: I created this custom player with my team because I wanted a better listening experience for my audience. They deserve the best. After sharing the player with my audience, I received hundreds of requests from other podcasters who wanted to use the player too, and so the Smart Podcast Player was born. You put an immense amount of time and care into creating your podcast; the player you use should reflect that. My team and I have put the same attention and care into building the Smart Podcast Player. I know that you (and your listeners) will love it. Some of the features and benefits: Works with any feed, from any host, anywhere. Looks amazing the design is clean and modern, and you can customize it to match your site perfectly. Lets your listeners explore, discover, and share. The Smart Podcast Player has an interactive library that allows your listeners to explore past episodes in your backlist without interrupting the episode that’s playing. The player also empowers your listeners to search your backlist by tag, download their favorite episodes in MP3 format, and share episodes with their friends. Your library of episodes updates automatically anytime you publish a new episode to your feed. All metadata is available, episode description included. Your listeners can control the speed of the currently playing episode just like they enjoy doing when they use today’s latest podcast mobile apps. It's also got rave reviews from podcasters like John Lee Dumas, Michael Hyatt, and Jaime Tardy of the Eventual Millionaire podcast. And this one is a big deal that I think doesn't get enough emphasis: there's a direct “Subscribe In iTunes” button on the player. The number of subscribers plays a big role in how your show ranks on iTunes. And now your podcast player can encourage those subscriptions, as in the picture you see below (you can actually click that picture and subscribe to this podcast… go ahead… I'll wait…) You can see the entire library of The Ray Edwards Show in the Smart Podcast Player, so you can see it in action, by clicking here. And once you've decided you can't live without the player, check it out at SmartPodcastPlayer.com Tip #2: Twitter Power 3.0 You may know Joel Comm as a New York Times Best-Selling author, and as a top social media influencer. I know him as the guy who convinced me to write and publish my first book, Writing Riches. Much of my success is tied to that book. It was published because of Joel's encouragement and advice. We have been good friends for many years now. I don't know Dave Taylor, but I have benefitted from his work at AskDaveTaylor.com many, many times (just as millions of others have). Joel and Dave just launched their co-authored book, Twitter Power 3.0, and I recommend you click here and buy your copy now. Twitter Power (the previous version) is already the world’s top-selling book on the subject of Twitter. It was endorsed by Tony Robbins (who, by the way, has 2.58 million followers on Twitter). This newly updated super-guide, Twitter Power 3.0 will show smart businesses and entrepreneurs how to use Twitter to massively grow their reach. And this new, improved, cutting-edge book is endorsed by none other than Guy Kawasaki, who says, “This book will give you a big head start toward mastering Twitter from two people who already have.” The book is also endorsed and praised by Robert Scoble, Mari Smith, Chris Brogan, Jay Baer, John Lee Dumas, Michael Stelzner, Kim Garst, and other top social media influencers. Look, you don't need anyone's expensive “Twitter Course” or “coaching” – you can dominate your market on Twitter simply following the advice in this book. Inside Twitter Power 3.0, you'll discover how to: Grow your number of followers PLUS increase your engagement on Twitter Make your content to go viral (you’ll be shocked at what works and what doesn’t!) Measure the Twitter metrics that matter most and fine-tune your strategy to maximize your results In celebration of the launch of Twitter Power 3.0, Joel and Dave are offering some generous bonuses when you order your copy of the book today. The bonuses you get include a brand new eBook called Social Poetry 2 (which features the top marketers/influencers online… even I make a brief appearance in the book). So, to get more followers and influence on Twitter, start by ordering your copy of Twitter Power 3.0. And, of course, claim all the free bonuses that come with your purchase. I don't make a single penny for recommending this book to you. The links in this post are not affiliate links. I just happen to think this is an excellent book, and I think you need to read it (if you want to be successful with Twitter). Tip #3: Social Media Marketing World 2015 Session Recordings Was traveling to San Diego for Social Media Marketing World 2015 just not an option for you this year? If so, you missed the marketing event of the year. I had the privilege of leading one of the tracks at the event, and I soaked up a ton of great knowledge from the other sessions. Below is a picture of me with my personal Mastermind Group, the Green Room Mastermind. In the photo is Pat Flynn, Cliff Ravenscraft, Mike Stelzner, Mark Mason, and Leslie Samuel. This is the first time we have all been in the same physical space at one time! (L-R) Mark Mason, Mike Stelzner, Pat Flynn, Cliff Ravenscraft, Leslie Samuel I know, I know, you're feeling left out. What if you could catch ALL the conference sessions at your convenience without any travel expenses or the need to replicate yourself? The good news is now you can! All you need is the Virtual Ticket to Social Media Marketing World 2015! For a fraction of the cost of a regular ticket, you’ll get full access to the recording of EVERY session. Yes, every keynote, all the panels and each great session–the ones people travel thousands of miles to see–will be at your fingertips. There's no risk, either – you can try the first two days once the recordings are posted and still cancel for a full refund if you decide it's not for you! Spiritual Foundations Satan Is No Longer Allowed To Accuse You Of Anything Recently a friend expressed worry that his troubles were because of Satan. My friend said to me, “I just know this problem is happening because Satan is the ‘accuser of the brethren', making sure God is aware of my every sin.” He was referring to a passage from Revelation 12:10: “Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.” (NKJV) Many people believe that this is still going on, and that the “casting down” comes at the end of time. But that is not true. A careful reading of Revelation in the context of the rest of the New Testament shows that this “casting down” of the “accuser of the brothers” has already happened. “Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.” Romans 8:33 In book of Job, Satan is in God's presence and us griping about Job (see Job 1:6-12). Now here's the question I have about this scene: what the heck is Satan doing at God's throne? That's God's most holy place. How can Satan be allowed there? It's pretty simple: we gave him our pass to the throne room of heaven. Adam bowed to the will of Satan in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3, and that means's Satan was able to take Adam's place and could come before God. Satan became “the accuser of the brothers” – he did nothing but bend God's ear with lies about us. Then something amazing happened. The “last Adam”, Jesus Christ, gave his own blood and cleansed the things of Heaven (Hebrews 9:22-24). The work Jesus did, which he called “finished”, redeemed the place where Satan stood before God. There's no place in heaven for Satan. He cannot come before God and accuse you or me. Those days are over. The next bit of good news is who is in God's presence today – and that would be JEsus. He is there on our behalf (Hebrews 9:24). And so now who can condemn or accuse us? “Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:34 Listen, as I read the book of Job I see it contains many theological knots. I can't untie half of them. I do know that much of it is bad theology, presented as just that. God himself says that Job's friends spoke wrongly about Him, invalidating much of the text as theology. Job wanted someone to plead on his behalf. (Job 9:33) We actually have what Job desired – we have Jesus as our representative, and he is interceding for us (1 Timothy 2:5). So… what does Satan do now? The only thing he can do: he comes to you and me, here on earth, and accuses us through our conscience. His only weapon is lies. His weapon is only effective if we believe the lies. He has no power. (Colossians 2:15) So if you find yourself thinking that God's will is for you to be sick, or hurting, or hungry… or that God is punishing you for your sins… don't buy into that garbage! Don't listen to Satan's lies. God justifies you, and nobody, not even the devil himself, has the power to come before God and accuse you. You, just like Jesus, have free and total access to God's throne of grace to “obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need”. (Hebrews 4:16) Revel in your righteousness, and know that all your sin-debt has been paid, you are free, and there's no one left to accuse you. Imagine yourself in the place of the woman caught in the act of adultery. Here accusers dragged her to Jesus, accusing her. He turned the accusers away and… When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” John 8:10-11 That's what he's saying to you and me today: “Neither do I condemn you.” Feature Presentation: Are You Making These 5 Social Media Marketing Mistakes? Social Marketing is more important now than ever. If you don't believe that, or don't understand why its true, hasten thyself over to Social Media Examiner and get the  Sixth Annual Social Media Marketing Industry Report. It is 50 pages, and over 80 charts worth of data from 2,800 organized into an important and comprehensive report. It will open your eyes to just how important Social Media Marketing is to you and your business. Based on that report, Mike Stelzner gave a fantastic keynote at Social Media Marketing World 2015, where he outlined the 8 major trends all marketers must know about in 2015. After spending two and a half days at the conference last week, attending sessions, taking notes like a madman, listening to the podcasts and reading several books by presenters at the conference, plus reading a pile of articles on Social Media Examiner, I decided to create this Social Media-focused show. So here are the 5 Social Media Marketing Mistakes you are most likely making… and how to fix them. Pronto. Social Media Marketing Mistake #1 Failure to have a Strategic Social Media Marketing System. “Strategic” means: the identification of long-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them. “System” means: a set of principles or procedures according to which something is done; an organized scheme or method. Thus, a Strategic Social Media Marketing System is: A set of principles and procedures of using Social Media with the overall aim of increasing the profitability of the enterprise. Do you have such a system? Is it written down? Does the document clearly define the intent of the system? Does it define, step-by-step, how to activities are to be conducted to achieve the Strategic Objective? Could anyone on your staff or team execute the instructions based solely on the written procedure? If not, you don't have a system. How To Fix Mistake #1: Develop a written document that spells out the principles and procedures of using Social Media with the overall aim of increasing the profitability of the enterprise. Social Media Marketing Mistake #2 Failure to have a consistent branding presence across Social Media Platforms. Your images, logos, and profile pages look different across all the different services, including your own blog. Your logo, colors, and design scheme are just a hodgepodge of what you used at the time you signed up for any given network. How To Fix Mistake #2: Get a professional logo design and headshot made, if you don't already have them. Know what your design color palette is and use it. Then, change your images, logos, and profile pages should look alike across all the different services, including your own blog. Your logo, colors, and design scheme should always match. And if you have a personal brand, use the same headshot on all the services… and make sure it looks like you! Social Media Marketing Mistake #3 Failure to understand the different Social Media services. The rules – both written and unwritten – differ from service to service. the proper way to be a valued member of each community is to understand its culture and behave accordingly. Proper behavior looks different on LinkedIn than on Google+ or Facebook, and Facebook profile etiquette is different from the etiquette for Facebook pages. And Twitter is different from all the rest. Unfortunately, many (most) marketers have never taken the time to really learn the culture of the networks they are part of. These same marketers then don't understand why their “social” marketing “doesn't work.” Here's a clue: If everywhere you go, you smell body odor, you might be the one who needs a shower. How To Fix Mistake #3: Study the most popular users of each service. Watch their behavior and interaction. Read a guide on the networks you want to be part of. You can find definitive guides and up-to-the-minute tips at Social Media Examiner for free. One powerful and important insight: spend most of your time on Social Networks being social. Interact. Respond. And don't make the mistake of being self-promotional all the time. My rule of thumb is to try to be 90% sharing and helpful, and to use only 10% of my Social Media activity to directly promote. Now go out on the playground… and play nice! Social Media Marketing Mistake #4 Failure to have a presence on the most important Social Media sites. Many marketers sign up for ever Social Media network, don't dig deep into any of them, and so have a lackluster presence everywhere. Yuck. Don't  do this. It just makes you appear to be one of the mediocre masses. You shouldn't – and can't – have a presence on all Social Media networks. How To Fix Mistake #4: I know I will get arguments on this, but in my opinion, here are the networks you should focus on, in the order of priority, from most important to least (but I think they are all important). Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Instagram Pinterest Google+ As I said, I know some will want to argue with be about this list, but I think it's right on target. Feel free to differ with me in the comments… or on Social Media!   Social Media Marketing Mistake #5 Failure to use strong visual content in your Social Media Marketing. Most Social Media Marketers are focused on words. As a copywriter, I understand. But copywriting and writing in general isn't really about the medium – it's about the message. If you're focused only on the text, you're missing out on huge momentum and potential profit. More and more, people are consuming visual content. How To Fix Mistake #5: Get visual – especially video-visual! One of the hottest trends, according to the data from the Social Media Marketing Industry Report (and Mike Stelzner's keynote), is video. In particular, native video. Meaning video that is posted and hosted on the network distributing it. The networks seem to be giving preference to video that is uploaded via their own network interface. So use Facebook to upload your video to Facebook, instead of uploading it to YouTube and linking to it on Facebook. The same is true of other networks as well. And for goodness sakes, don't forget pictures and those “quote memes” that seem so popular. You can make your own using Canva or Wordswag. And finally, there are infographics. If you want to capture complex ideas in a simple way people love, use infographics. There are a lot of great tools to make them yourself, among them Canva, PikToChart,  and Visual.ly. If you have listened to the Park Leaders Show for a while, you know Jack Hartt was a mentor of mine while I was a park ranger. It was my conversations with Jack early in my career which led me to believe that you would enjoy hearing similar conversations with leaders from all over the country. Talking with people from parks is important, but if we are really going to change the landscape of leadership in parks and recreation, we need to step outside of parks too. In this episode, we reach outside the world of parks again and talk with Ray Edwards. Not only is Ray a successful entrepreneur, but he is also a strong supporter of parks. Just like Jack Hartt taught me so much about the business of parks, Ray Edwards has taught me about the business of business. I am so much better at what I do because of Ray Edwards. Ray explains what park systems, individual parks, or park employees can do to foster an entrepreneurial spirit. Ray is the host of The Ray Edwards Show and author of Writing Riches. Ray recommends Work the System by Sam Carpenter to learn more about implementing systems.

“How do I really start my own online business?” This is a question I hear pretty often. Recently I found myself saying, “Well, it's pretty simple. You just need to…” and then I heard myself spewing out a long list of stuff that was anything but simple. Clearly I needed a simpler, more cohesive answer to this question. That's what this episode is all about. Announcements: If you enjoy the podcast, I would consider it a great favor if you subscribe (and leave a review) in iTunes. Tip Of The Week  This week I'm recommending another book, Ryan Holiday's The Obstacle Is The Way.  In life we are often frustrated by the obstacles we face. Throughout history, there has been a different way of viewing obstacles. A way that was familiar to John D. Rockefeller, Amelia Earhart, Ulysses S. Grant, and Steve Jobs. A belief that the obstacle is not in the way, but that it is the way. The philosophy behind this belief was articulated by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who struggled to define the way of excellence in any circumstance. In this book, Holiday spells out in simple language that very philosophy. “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” — Marcus Aurelius   Spiritual Foundations What do you trust God with? This week we will continue with listener questions. As you may remember, we just completed our first ever Annual Reader/Listener Survey for this site (and podcast). We got some interesting and surprising results in that survey…  and lots of feedback, comments, and questions. We will answer more questions and comment on more comments. Also on today's episode… Tip of the Week I address the overreaction to my comments about “radical grace”. Would you like to be in a mastermind with me? And the always award-winning, much much more. Announcements: Looking for a copywriting gig? Send me a one sheet “sales letter” on why you would be a perfect copywriter for me to hire. 800 words maximum. Also send along any samples you think would convince me you are brilliant. Make the subject line of your email say only: “Blue Fondue”. Send that email to the address I provided in the podcast, and listen to the podcast audio for instructions about what happens next. If you email me with questions, I have not listened to the podcast instructions, I won't be able to answer you. Starting this week, every person who submits an audio question for the podcast will receive a free gift (if, and only if, we use your question on the podcast). Click here to submit your audio question. Meanwhile, if you would be interested in the possible one-day mastermind with me and 11 other people, where we make radical progress in your business… And if you're not just “interested” but you already know you want to do it,  fill in this form. If it looks like you would be a good fit, I will call you myself.  (If you just want the “details”, listen to the podcast. I explain all the “details”.) Conferences where I will be attending and/or speaking: Strategic Influence Jan 14-16, 2014, Phoenix, AZ NAMS 11 February 7-9, 2014, Atlanta, GA Social Media Marketing World, March 26-28, 2014, San Diego, CA JV Alert: The Perfect Game April 24-27, Denver, CO SCORRE Conference May 5-8, Orlando, FL Tip Of The Week   Stuck In Customs Copywriting Corner This is the official kickoff of one of your suggestions from our listener survey: that I include a copywriting tip in each episode.  Each week I will include a tip on how to improve the power and persuasiveness of your copy. In other words, I will help you write copy that moves people to action, whether that action be to buy a product, to opt into a list, or to adopt an idea you are “selling” to them. This week's tip: the easiest and fastest way to influence anyone is by using what is already influencing them. This is a restatement of Robert Colliers classic advice: you must enter the conversation that is already taking place in the mind of the reader. But how do you do this? To get into the mind of your prospect, you need to have tea.  No, it's not a beverage. It's a visualization exercise, for which I have coined the term The Empathy Amplifier (T.E.A.). Here's how to do it: Gather all the actual data you have about your prospects (the people to whom you are writing). Get into a quiet place. Perhaps even have an actual cup of tea. Now visualize yourself stepping into the body and life of your prospect. (This is not some form of demonic astral projection, it simply you using your sanctified imagination to understand another person's life better.) Walk through every detail of their day that you can imagine: when they wake up, how they wake up, what they see/hear/smell/feel… What they have for breakfast, the kind of car they drive to work, the neighborhood they drive through, the waiter greeted at the office, the emotional state they feel throughout the day… Right up to the moment they walk through the door of home at the end of the workday and collapse onto the sofa to watch TV. Or whatever they do. Take your time. Do this exercise thoroughly. Think about what their fears, frustrations, and anxieties are. What is their dominant driving emotion, most of the time? When you have bathed yourself in the wash of their experience… Now you can start writing some copy. Try it. In fact, I would love to share some reader examples with everyone else. So if you do this exercise, and write a paragraph or two of copy, and you know there is a difference-send me that copy! I'll share with the world! Spiritual Foundations Last week I talked about those who resist a “radical grace” approach to the gospel. I mentioned that some people are afraid this is an error, and refer to it as “cheap grace” or “greasy grace”.  Their concern is that this teaching that Jesus has already paid the price for our sins… past, present, and future, is a perversion of the gospel. That it gives people license to sin, and makes them bitter, arrogant, and prideful.  I said that Grace is not a license to sin. It is what empowers us to overcome sin. I also knowledge to that some use the word “grace” as an excuse for their sin. But we don't know (a) whether that person IS or IS NOT a true believer… and (B) how and/or when that person will be overcome by God's Grace and led out of a life of sin. Let me assure you that I got the same objections from more than one person. So if you objected, and you are hearing this, please understand that I am not directing this only at you. I am, in the best way I know, lovingly offering you a different way of considering this issue. I reached my conclusions on these matters based solely on Scripture. I can defend them based solely on Scripture. But that would take an entire podcast to even begin to scratch the surface. So let me summarize this quickly, and perhaps allow some people to rest easy, by saying this: The grace that Jesus Christ offers lets you completely off the hook for sin. It settles your sin problem once and for all. Past, present, and future. It is not necessary for you to beg for forgiveness every time you cross the line in sin. Even if you do it willfully. Grace is much more powerful than that, and creates within you a new heart that makes it more and more impossible for you to sin. For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age. Titus 2:11-12, NIV Grace does not increase the desire to sin. Preaching this radical grace does not cause people to sin more. What causes that is the very spirit of “religion” which so desperately wants to bind people to rules and regulations. It is this religious spirit that causes well-meaning believers say things like, “Yes, grace is wonderful, but you got to be careful… you've got to make sure you balance that teaching with an emphasis on holiness…  and following God's commandments.” I humbly disagree. We are not under the law, but under grace. Let's see what the New Testament has to say about the Law.     Acts     The law is an unbearable yoke. (Acts 15:10) Romans     The law reveals sin but cannot fix it. (Romans 3:20)     If the law worked then faith would be irrelevant. (Romans 4:14)     The law brings wrath upon those who follow it. (Romans 4:15)     The purpose of the law was to increase sin. (Romans 5:20)     Christians are not under the law. (Romans 6:14)     Christians have been delivered from the law. (Romans 7:1-6)     The law is good, perfect, and holy but cannot help you be good, perfect, or holy. (Romans 7:7-12)     The law which promises life only brings death through sin. (Romans 7:10)     The law makes you sinful beyond measure. (Romans 7:13)     The law is weak. (Romans 8:2-3) 1 Corinthians     The strength of sin is the law. (1 Corinthians 15:56) 2 Corinthians     The law is a ministry of death. (2 Corinthians 3:7)     The law is a ministry of condemnation. (2 Corinthians 3:9)     The law has no glory at all in comparison with the New Covenant. (2 Corinthians 3:10)     The law is fading away. (2 Corinthians 3:11)     Anywhere the law is preached it produces a mind-hardening and a heart-hardening veil. (2 Corinthians 3:14-15) Galatians     The law justifies nobody. (Galatians 2:16)     Christians are dead to the law. (Galatians 2:19)     The law frustrates grace. (Galatians 2:21)     To go back to the law after embracing faith is “stupid.” (Galatians 3:1)     The law curses all who practice it and fail to do it perfectly. (Galatians 3:10)     The law has nothing to do with faith. (Galatians 3:11-12)     The law was a curse that Christ redeemed us from. (Galatians 3:13)     The law functioned in God's purpose as a temporary covenant from Moses till John the Baptist announced Christ. (Galatians 3:16 & 19, also see Matthew 11:12-13, Luke 16:16)     If the law worked God would have used it to save us. (Galatians 3:21)     The law was our prison. (Galatians 3:23)     The law makes you a slave like Hagar. (Galatians 4:24) Ephesians     Christ has abolished the law which was a wall of hostility. (Ephesians 2:15) Philippians     Paul considered everything the law gained him as “skybalon” which is Greek for “poop.” (Philippians 3:4-8) 1 Timothy     The law is only good if used in the right context. (1Timothy 1:8 – see next verse for the context)     The law was made for the unrighteous but not for the righteous. (1 Timothy 1:9-10) Hebrews     The law is weak, useless, and makes nothing perfect. (Hebrews 7:18-19)     (As an aside – that's some fighting talk – no wonder the author of Hebrews remains anonymous to this day!)     God has found fault with it and created a better covenant, enacted on better promises. (Hebrews 8:7-8)     It is obsolete, growing old, and ready to vanish. (Hebrews 8:13)     It is only a shadow of good things to come and will never make someone perfect. (Hebrews 10:1) This list of scripture, and the commentary, was supplied by my good friend Phil Drysdale. I recommend you read Phil's blog at PhilDrysdale.com Let me answer clearly this accusation that there is such a thing as “greasy grace”: no, no, no! Grace does not cause disregard for holiness-your religion does. As a final thought on this subject, I will quote the well-respected Bible commentator Martyn Lloyd Jones, who wrote the following  in his Commentary on Romans 6: The true preaching of the gospel of salvation by grace alone always leads to the possibility of this charge being brought against it. There is no better test as to whether a man is really preaching the New Testament gospel of salvation than this, that some people might misunderstand it and misinterpret it to mean that it really amounts to this, that because you are saved by grace alone it does not matter at all what you do; you can go on sinning as much as you like because it will redound all the more to the glory of grace. If my preaching and presentation of the gospel of salvation does not express it to that misunderstanding, then it is not the true gospel.” Your Further Comments More emphasis on selecting niches and keywords. This is my biggest problem. I prefer to read the transcription of a podcast. Broadcast listener questions I like the short format the best. I really like the podcast. It would be nice if all blog post were able to be listened to. Your Further Questions Do you have live hands-on workshops about Writing Riches for those of us who could use a tutorial? I believe in your message and impressed by you as a person — so my question would be “What can I do to help you be successful Ray?” What is the best way to get content and products created without bogging down and missing the market? Do you think it's possible to create an income with “just” a Dad blog and podcast? Is it really that easy to charge big money for common knowledge? (or maybe I know more than I think I do) More details about how you include God in your daily business activities. Very few people mention God and business together (that's why I love your posts/Podcasts). How do you specifically include prayer in your business activities? What To Do Now If you enjoy the podcast, I would consider it a great favor if you subscribe (and leave a review) in iTunes. This helps new people discover the podcast. You can also find the podcast on Stitcher. Question: how are you doing on your goals and resolutions so far in the new year? Click here to leave your comments.

My goal is to help you succeed with your online business, and this show is for you, whether you're a seasoned veteran who's been online for years — or you haven't even made your first dollar online! We can all reach for higher levels of success in business and in life! Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 This is a relaunch of my more “occasional” podcast. I owe my inspiration to get it going again to Michael Hyatt and especially to Cliff Ravenscraft. For a long time I have been thinking about re-starting this podcast but wanted to wait to launch it until I got it “perfect.” Here’s what I’ve learned: Perfectionism is the enemy of accomplishment. Ray Edwards My plan for the podcast is to focus on these core topics: Internet Business: starting, growing, and profiting from your own Internet Business. Marketing: practical steps for selling more of your products, services, and ideas. Leadership: the keys to leading yourself and others in a transformational way. Productivity: tips, tools, and tactics to help you get more done in less time. Writing: how to write for strategic influence. Spiritual Foundations: keeping first things first. Miscellany: freedom to talk about anything else I want. My intention is to publish a new podcast each week on Tuesdays, along with an outline (or “show notes” like these.) While you will be able to listen or download episodes here on my blog, it will be much easier for you to subscribe in iTunes. EPISODE OUTLINE I share the “State of Ray Edwards International, Inc” – and why it matters to you. Current reality: There are some significant changes now that we are operating in the “new economy”. What’s different about the “new economy”? A few key points for freelancers and entrepreneurs – these must be understood and internalized: The bubble has burst. Easy credit is gone. Houses of cards in the banking industry have come tumbling down. People have lost their jobs, their houses, their credit cards. The spending habits and market behaviors of almost all people have irrevocably changed, altered forever by the economic shift that took place recently. And if you’re waiting for things to get “back to normal”, this is your wake-up call… it’s never going back. This is the new normal. Get used to it. Adapt. Competition is at an all time high. And thanks to Google it is easier than ever before to find all your competitors in a few seconds. Nobody needs anything. In the Western World, even though we have experienced an economic shake up, we still have everything we need already. Yes, I know some people are in need and I am not ignoring them nor minimizing their needs – but I am also acknowledging that for most people, their needs are over-supplied. Do you have a roof over your head, clean water, and at least one meal per day? Then you are better off than most of the people in the world. To see how good you have it, check out how wealthy you rank in the world by clicking here. What does all this mean? It’s time to review and evaluate how you do everything you do within your business or practice. Does it measure up? Is it effective? Does it produce profit? Is it the best possible use of your time? That’s what I’m doing here – reviewing my current systems and findings. Hopefully it’s helpful. I offer the following with this caveat: I’m still workin’ on it, and I don’t always follow the system perfectly. But each time I fall “off the wagon”, I get up, dust off my britches, and climb back on. So far it’s worked pretty well. A “day in the life of Ray” is a busy one. Here are current projects I’m working on: 1. Private Client Copy Project. This was a big project, comprising 3 full video salesletters rewrites. This project was a beast in terms of time invested, but it was fun. And it paid well. 2. Private Consulting Client. This relationship translates to regular phone meetings, a small in-house launch every quarter or so, and reams of copy generated for upsells, ridealongs, retention, phone scripts, etc. This is a retainer + revenue deal, just like all my deals these days. 3. New Partnership. More info coming soon. 5. Writing Riches Member Site. This is a “coaching club” I run for those who cannot necessarily afford to hire me but who want to learn from my work, get me input, and receive training from me each month. 6. Book. My new book on copywriting, Writing Riches, is a #1 Best-Seller on Amazon.com. It’s the best deal I offer on training and is available as a softcover or on the Kindle. 7. Three books in progress. One is a business book (first draft completed),one is a book for Christ-followers on the importance and power of forgiveness (first draft about 75% complete) (this book is being folded into the next one), and one is a book about achieving true, lasting success, called Taking Back Tomorrow. 8. Two monthly newsletters. I write one for my clients, and one for paying subscribers. 9. Workshops. I am planning a small, exclusive workshop in my offices this Fall. It will be me and four guests… and you’ll get my hands-on help with your project. Plus, my team will even build your site for you! This won’t be cheap – the price is probably going to be around $5,000. If you’re interested, please call my assistant Kathy at 509-624-2220 and let her know. Acceptance is not guaranteed, as this is not for everyone. 10. Copywriting Protege Program. My students write for clients who either (a) can’t get on my schedule soon enough or (b) can’t afford my fees. My team writes your copy, I critique the drafts for re-writes, and then I approve the final work that is delivered to you. This means we can deliver affordable copy that still receives my “touch”. (To inquire about a project, please submit your request here: https://rayedwards.com/contact ) 11. Coaching Program. This is a time vortex for me, but it is profitable and rewarding. Still “testing” the best format and pricing. 12. Info Products. Retooling, simplifying, and systemizing. 13. Podcast. Already covered this earlier. HOW TO START AN INTERNET BUSINESS FROM SCRATCH IN 10 STEPS I also discuss how anyone can start their own Internet Business and sell their own ideas and expertise, if they follow these 10 steps: Research your market. Buy your domain name. Get hosting for your website. Build a site with WordPress + a Premium Theme. Create a Social Media “Wheel” Build your list. Drive traffic to your site. Build a community. Create solutions. Monetize. LISTENER QUESTIONS I also answered these questions from my listeners. “It would be great to have tips on how to choose a business that doesn't require so much follow up tasks like emailing your list regularly, etc. How to set up systems you can leave running and check in once in a while.” Daniel Axelrod “Want to start a health/wellness coaching business. Being able to gain clients around the world, have intergrated web-site and using media to change the health status of our country.” Marsha Warren Hays “How to find someone to set up your site who will do a quality job for a reasonable price. I could never set up a WordPress blog and get it to look professional, so I went with something else. It's OK, but I think WordPress would be better. I'd really like someone to teach me how to set it up myself.” Mila Clark EPISODE RESOURCES Links to resources I mentioned in the show: Michael Hyatt’s website. Cliff Ravenscraft’s website.
