It's time for another Friday interview episode! Today my guest is John Meese, the former dean of Platform University. John Meese is an economist by training and an author who has been thinking about how we can thrive and not just survive, especially in light of the big reset of 2020. John Meese shares with us about his decision to start a physical co-working space at the beginning of 2020 and how that impacted his life and business. In addition to business struggles, he faced immense personal challenges in 2020, losing his grandfather and father within a few months of each other.  In this episode, we talk about navigating the challenges of life, the 3 different kinds of products you need as an entrepreneur, and where your product fits in the hierarchy of needs. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN TODAY'S EPISODE: Why you need to think about your business in terms of where it falls on the hierarchy of need How your mindset around challenges can help you get back up when life knocks you down Why the best businesses are those that create real products to solve real problems for real people The 3 types of products John Meese recommends: gateway product, continuity product, and flagship product RESOURCES IN TODAY'S EPISODE: John Meese | Survive and Thrive Book | Thrive School Podcast BADA$$ Online Marketing University Free Privacy Policy BADA$$ Online Marketers Follow Bobby on Instagram

In this week's episode of the SIMPLE brand With Matt Lyles podcast I talk with John Meese, author of Survive and Thrive: How to Build a Profitable Business in Any Economy (Including This One)!Let's face it. If you're a small business owner, statistics are not on your side:20% of small businesses fail within their first year50% of all businesses don't last five yearsOnly 33% of all businesses last 10 years or more And that's in average economies, without a pandemic. Last year, and this year, have made small business ownership much, much worse. In 2020, over 100,000 businesses permanently closed. This year, in 2021, roughly 9 million businesses say they're afraid they won't survive through the rest of the year without additional government assistance. No matter how you look at it, no matter what economy you're in, business ownership is a struggle. Beyond just your expertise, you have to know how - and put into place - those practices and systems that will not only ensure your business survives, but also ensure it thrives. Because if you're a business owner, I'm sure you didn't create your business just to simply survive. And that's why I'm happy to talk with John Meese this week. John's the CEO of CoWork Inc. He's the former dean of Platform University. He's the host of the Thrive School podcast. And he's the author of the recent #1 bestseller Survive and Thrive: How to Build a Profitable Business in Any Economy (Including This One). John and I talk about how the global pandemic effected - and continues to effect - our economy and small business owners, and we discuss the key plan business owners can use for building (or re-building) a business with legs that will last for the long haul - even in the next economy-impacting event. No matter what industry you're in, no matter what size your business is, these are the practices that you need to instill to ensure your business not only survives, but thrives  - regardless of the economy. RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODEJohn's book: Survive and ThriveJohn's site John's podcast: Thrive School With John Meese

John Meese is a serial entrepreneur, new author and the current dean of PlatformUniversity.com.  He has a wide range of experience with email and he's learned some interesting things along the way, including a few tricks that might help you with your email content.Key Points From This Episode:John discusses how social platforms have not been around as long as email and they don't see the kind of consistent results that email has. Remembering that there is a human on the other side that receives an email allowed John to develop a natural connection that led to his initial success. John admits that when he went from running two anonymous blogs to one under his name, there was a lot of fear that came with that. He pushed through that fear because he knew he genuinely wanted to help people. When writing emails, he tries to write them as if he is having a natural professional conversation with a colleague. John shares what he's learned along the way about both small email lists and large email lists. He believes that email is at the center of every business strategy. Teach It Forward, is an example of an automated newsletter sequence that John created as part of Platform University is some of the best content he believes he's ever written.Tweetables:Each person, each email subscriber, each email address on my list was a real person on the other side. And that really helped, I think create just a natural connection that allowed me to get some initial success. Even when I had a really small audience.  (3:20) There was an element of when I started creating content online of building an email, that's actually seeing subscribers. There was an element of fear that came with that. I'm like, Oh my gosh, what if I misstep? (06:32) As I stayed focused on the fact that I was talking to real people, as if I was having a conversation with them, then it took a lot of the fear out of it made it more personal. (07:01)A business at its core is really a collection of products and services that act as real solutions to real problems for real people. (08:54)You've got to stay connected to the real people on the inside of that email list. And I've seen a lot of people who manage big email lists really forget that. (We discussed an amazing event called Collaborate at the beginning of this episode. Get details HERE.) Your voice is your power. It is your tool. Without your voice, you have no podcast. My college professor reached out to me this week. He asked if I would give a presentation to his new podcast class about developing and protecting the voice when creating a podcast. ILLNESS HAPPENS Throughout the year, it is inevitable that you will get sick. Maybe it is just a scratchy voice. Maybe you lose your voice altogether. When illness hits, what do you do about your show? I typically get sick every Spring and Fall. Allergies in my part of the country run rampant. We get extreme weather changes. It can get up above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the Summer and below zero in the Winter. Spring and Fall are yo-yos. Two weeks ago it was 84. This morning it was 24 as I was taking my son to the hockey rink. The combination of crazy temps and the leaves falling from the trees spikes allergies. When I get sick, it makes it difficult to record my show. My throat is sore and raw. There is usually a bad cough. The frog sound coming from my voice box is not anything I can use to record a podcast. Luckily I am prepared. When I record my show, I typically record two or three episodes at a time. They are also prepared a week or two in advance. In addition to working ahead, I always have an evergreen episode ready to go. This is in case of emergencies where I need an episode at the last minute. THREE THINGS There are three things you can do to prepare for disaster. First, work a week ahead. When you are working on the podcast for the following week, you have some flexibility. If something happens where you can't record for any reason, you already have the show ready for this week. Second, create an evergreen episode. This is an episode with content that never becomes outdated. This is your "just in case" episode. You simply set it aside in case you need it. Finally, you can record an evergreen "donut". This is an open and close that allows you to put repurposed content in the middle. It is like you are putting it in the middle of the donut. Michael Hyatt, creator of Platform University and other great programs, did this a few years ago. He went on a month-long sabbatical. In order to continue to publish episodes, he recorded a brief open and close to highlight previous popular episodes. To do this, you would record an open just like your regular show open. However, instead of introducing new content, you say something like, "This week we will be revisiting the one episode of my show that has been downloaded more than any other episode." You could also create a show of highlights or "best of" questions. This could be any content you can gather from previous episodes. Your close would be very similar. "I hope you've enjoyed this 'best of' episode. I will be back next week with an entirely new episode." This closes the donut. Now, if you ever get sick, you have an option to continue to deliver content every week. Consistency is crucial to creating relationships. Plan ahead. So, how do you stay healthy? How do you get well if you get sick? What ounce of prevention can you use to protect your most valuable asset? Here are a few tips. CARE Take care of your voice. Wear a hat & avoid the head cold Speak from the diaphragm when recording Avoid excessive clearing of the throat Warm up properly by slowly expanding your range Use a nasal rinse DRINK When recording, stay hydrated. Drink room temp water to avoid constriction from cold beverages Avoid caffeine, because it also constricts Avoid soda & syrup drinks to prevent the crud building up in your throat GET WELL If your voice gets strained, here are a few things to try. Gargle with warm salt water Use a humidifier to keep your membranes hydrated Drink warm decaf tea with honey Drink warm, diluted cocoa Use a nasal rinse Drink plenty of water Experiment to find what works Your voice is your most valuable asset. Do all you can to protect it. Stay healthy. If you get sick, try these seven tips to get well. Above all, don't risk it. Plan ahead. Illness is inevitable. Have a show in the can or a plan to create some evergreen content should you get sick. Get ahead of the game. Above all, do your best to protect your podcast voice and stay healthy.   You can also find tools to help you create great content at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com. How to Thrive In The ‘Next Normal’ With John Meese

Podcast – Ray Edwards

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2020 31:07

How do we move forward in the “next normal” as 2020 is about to be the past? What does thriving look like in ANY economy? That’s what we’re talking about with John Meese in today’s episode. Spiritual Foundations "Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives." (Titus 3:14 NIV) I think this verse applies to us especially in these times. As entrepreneurs and business owners, what we're doing is not just about making money. Don't get me wrong, it definitely is about making money and that's fine, but it is also about providing for urgent needs. Be encouraged! You are needed because you provide for the urgent needs of others...You are not living an unproductive life.   Tip of the Week My tip this week is very simple, but the effect on your life will be profound! Batch your tasks. Put like tasks together. A great example of this is email. I used to check my email several times throughout the day which was most definitely a distraction. I now do this one time per day. It may take 30 or 45 minutes, but I respond to what is necessary and move on. This also works with content creation. For instance, I often record multiple podcasts in succession. I'm already setup to record...already "in the zone", so it makes sense to knock out more than one. Once I get a few weeks out of the way, it leaves some days on my calendar wide open, giving me the chance to create, or to recreate. Remember recreation is re-creation. You're recreating yourself - your inner-child, your inner-joy, your spark that makes life feel good. You can't be running sprint all the time. Batch your tasks and leave some space for this recreation...enjoy the margin in your life.   An Interview with John Meese John Meese is on a journey that would inspire any entrepreneur. I met him several years ago when he was still working his first job out of college, making about 30k a year. At the time, John had a new wife, new baby and was looking for a way to be an even better provider for his family. He became a student of Michael Hyatt's Platform University as well as my Copywriting Academy...two things that helped him make his first 10,000 dollars online in one week selling his first digital course. Apparently John made quite an impression on Michael Hyatt and was ultimately given the position of Brand Director and Dean of Platform University. Even while playing such a huge role in Michael Hyatt's organization, John still found time to continue building his own brand and launched a successful software company, Notable Themes, which produces some high quality themes for Wordpress (such the one I use on RayEdwards.com) Of course the path of an entrepreneur is not without obstacles. One of John's most recent ventures, a shared workspace for his fellow entrepreneurs in Columbia, Tennessee was shut down just 58 days after a successful grand opening due to Covid 19. The story of how John dealt with that situation is worth the listen to this week's episode. John didn't just lay down and let the pandemic dictate his business's fate. He actually managed to take advantage of the situation. He started contacting other well known entrepreneurs asking them if they would share their experience dealing with the pandemic. Of course, with all the lockdown free time, he got lots of yeses. Check out the fruits of those efforts (some great podcasts) available right here. Doug: Looking through your bio, it looks like you've got lots of gifts and talents and lots of ways that you serve your audience. Do you want to share with our listeners right now what do you consider your superpower and how you help people? John Meese: Yeah, no, I'd be happy to. I think that's, of course, my own perception of my quote superpower is definitely changed over time but something that really stuck with me that a colleague shared probably only a year ago was that... She commented that I have a unique perspective to understand the need for both process and profit. And so I've really been over the last couple of years really just been developing better, my understanding of the kind of where I fit in the middle of that because I find most entrepreneurs are typically either drawn to a kind of like the big promotions and big launches that generate lots of revenue or they're drawn to like operations and efficiency and managing budgets. And I'm in this weird tension in the middle where I get excited about profit being the scorecard. And profit is a mix of both how you make money as well as how you keep the money. John Meese: I mean a lot of times when I work with clients they say that the like the whole idea of turning complex ideas into simple concepts something you can act on and that's something they often come up in the comment themes and feedback. So yeah, I mean I would say those would be my superpowers is simplifying things and then process and profit. Doug: Well, and I mean obviously both those things are important for you to keep the lights on your business. John Meese: Yes. Doug: And my experience as I've gotten older is that I've now found myself spending more time on process than I did before too when I was a young entrepreneur was like, "Hey, what can we do just to get out there and make some money?" And then you kind of learn that, well now you want to scale. Now you need some process or processes in place and some systems, there are some operating procedures as you're going to start to staff or outsource and delegate. So is that what you're talking about when we're...

In today's episode I discuss the Coronavirus impact on the speaking business. If you ask any professional speaker who has been in this business for a while and they'll tell you stories of what it's like when the economy crashes and suddenly all the speaking gigs dry up. It happened in the USA in 2001 and 2008, in Asia in 1997, and it could happen again with Coronavirus. So how do you ensure that your speaking career can survive when the economy takes a tumble? How can you survive a crash in the speaking business? One way is by becoming what I call an ‘All Weather Keynote Speaker'. Please SUBSCRIBE ►http://bit.ly/JTme-ytsub ♥️ Your Support Appreciated! In building my own speaking career I wanted to ensure that it could weather any economic season. It was about avoiding the feast to famine that too many speakers experience. To do this I borrowed an idea I first discovered while studying financial strategy for my MBA. It's called the ‘All Weather Portfolio'. That strategy was devised by legendary investor Ray Dalio. Dalio is the founder of Bridgewater Associates, the world's biggest hedge fund with $190billion under management. He has personally given over $750million to philanthropic causes. Dalio first described his ‘All Weather Portfolio', a diversified asset mix of investments, in Tony Robbins' book ‘MONEY Masters the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom' and more recently in his own book called ‘Principles'. Here's how the ‘All Weather Portfolio' works and then I'll describe how it can be applied to building a speaking career that can survive and thrive during any economic climate. This is what the ‘All Weather Portfolio' looks like as it relates to investing. It is designed to weather any financial season from bull market to bear market, recession to the booming economy we have today. The asset allocation of this investment portfolio is as follows: 40% long-term bonds 30% stocks 15% intermediate-term bonds 7.5% gold 7.5% commodities You'll notice three things about this portfolio: It minimizes risk by holding a low amount of stocks as they have higher volatility. It has a large amount of ‘boring bonds' what counter the risk of stocks and looks to the long term. It does have a certain amount of highly volatile assets like gold and commodities as they do well during periods of high inflation. OK James, so what does this have to do with the speaking business? Well if you think about it, most professional speakers make the majority of their income from the relatively high risk, high reward activity of giving keynote speeches. A good keynote speaker might earn $30,000 per speech and give 50-100 speeches a year but when an economy crashes two things happen. Firstly companies try to save cash by reducing the number of events, conferences and exhibitions they organize. Secondly that great speaker they previously could make $20k for a speech now has to accept $5k. Classic supply and demand and lots of speakers which plenty of blank white space on their calendars. It's usually at times like these that speakers have to suddenly figure out how to generate new revenue streams from online courses, continuity and membership programs, books, consulting and coaching. Online courses, continuity programs and books are all medium to long term plays as they take a while to create and start producing income. Consulting and coaching can generate cash quickly but like speaking can alternate from feast to famine. So what should a smart speaker do? One strategy I've been experimenting with is to think of your time like Ray Dalio thinks about money. This means allocating your time over a range of activities which have different levels of risks, rewards and timelines. If you are a classic speaker, author, coach then how you allocate your time might look something like this: 40% Continuity Programs (the equivalent of long-term, low-risk bonds) 30% Speaking (the equivalent of high risk stocks) 15% Products (books and online courses are the equivalent of intermediate-term bonds) 7.5% Consulting & Coaching (the equivalent of highly volatile but often profitable gold) 7.5% Other (joint ventures and highly experimental projects are similar to commodities) Now let's imagine if you looked to build revenue streams from all five of these categories (continuity, speaking, products, consulting & coaching, other). When the economy is booming, like it is in the US just now, then you are reaping the rewards for plentiful and highly-paid speaking engagements while at the same time taking that cash and investing it in your long-term, lower-risk categories such as building your membership program or creating that online course. Then when the economy crashes, as it will inevitably do, you can keep your speaking fees high because you have enough income being generated from continuity programs, royalties and other product sales. Basically the time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining! I recognize that what I just described is not particularly glamorous. It is however strategic and intended for those speakers who want to have a long-term career and be able to make decisions from a position of power and strength. So here is what you can you do next to become an ‘All Weather Keynote Speaker': Start investing time in building a membership, continuity or subscription program. It could be a $50 a month continuity program like Michael Hyatt's Platform University or a higher priced one like James Schramko's $2000 a year ‘SuperFastBusiness Membership'. Commit to writing every day and publishing at least one book per year. Think of your book as a type of retirement account where you consistently add intellectual property to and then at a certain point start withdrawing cash from. Automate the marketing and selling of your speaking programs so you can be more efficient with your time because time is money. That's what my team and I teach to professional speakers. #SpeakersLife #ProfessionalSpeaking

6 People Who Can Help You With Your Podcast – Episode 152   Surround yourself with the best people and success can be had.   Over my years in radio, I learned time and again that I could accomplish so much more by getting help and mentoring from the right people. As I ventured into podcasting, I quickly found the people that could mentor me and help me move forward toward my goals.   Today, I want to share with you a few people I think might be able to help you on your podcasting journey. Some I know personally and work with closely. Some have mentored me from afar through their work and resources.   Whichever method you choose to use, find the people that can help you get to your goals quicker and achieve more than you ever thought possible.     School of Podcasting – Dave Jackson   The first person I want to introduce you to is Dave Jackson at School of Podcasting. If you have listened to my podcast for any length of time, you have heard me mention Dave. He has been my mentor, helping me learn the technical side of podcasting.   Dave's coaching and tutorials have helped me more than anyone I have encountered.   My podcast actually started out as a blog. Back in early 2012, I was writing about the art of podcasting while learning the technical side and preparing to launch my show. Less than four months into it, my writings were being published on the New Media Expo site.   Shortly after I began writing for New Media Expo, Dave saw my stuff and reached out. Dave was already on my radar, because I had discovered his website when I was doing my original research. I simply hadn't considered reaching out to a guy who had been doing it for about 7 years at that point. He was there near the beginning.   Dave's gesture reaching out to me was a fantastic surprise. We had a great conversation that lasted about an hour. Here was a guy that had been podcasting since 2005 that just wanted to get to know more about what I was doing and how we might help each other. That is what I absolutely love about podcasters.   The conversation eventually led to a bit of a partnership. Dave and I kept in touch working on various ideas together. We met up at New Media Expo a few times. Finally, we teamed up when I joined Dave's “Podcast Review Show” podcast. We review podcasters and help them improve.   [You can appear on the Podcast Review Show and get reviewed HERE.]   Prior to that partnership, Dave help me multiple times with my website, podcast, and technical aspects of my show. He has truly been there and done that. Dave knows his stuff.   If you have questions about your feed, website or other technical aspects of your podcast, I highly recommend you use Dave's knowledge and tools. He does some one-on-one coaching. He has resources on his website. You can also get deal on gear through Dave.   [Find information on Dave Jackson and the School of Podcasting HERE.]     Audacity to Podcast – Daniel J. Lewis   Daniel J. Lewis is another podcaster that helps people launch and improve their own podcast. He shares his knowledge of the audio software Audacity and web platform Wordpress. You'll learn all about equipment, software and skills necessary to podcast. His show was named the #1 technology podcast in 2012.   Daniel and I met through Dave Jackson. After following his show for quite some time, Daniel and I finally met at New Media Expo and have since developed a bit of a relationship.   The thing I love most about Daniel and Dave is their honesty and flexibility. They won't push you toward their favorite microphone. They will give you honest reviews and options that fit your needs. For instance, do you want or need a $60 microphone or $360 microphones? They teach you the differences and why.   Daniel has a great lead magnet called “20 Things You Should Do Before Every Podcast Episode.” You learn how to get the room quiet, how to prepare, what tools to gather and more. He calls it his preflight checklist. This will make your recording session so much more efficient.   If you are serious about podcasting, check out Daniel's Podcasters' Society. This is a group of great podcasters together in a learning and sharing environment that can really help you improve your show. Daniel and I are discussing making some of my material available within Podcasters' Society each month. Give it a look.   [Find information on Daniel J. Lewis' material HERE.]       The next few guys are just a few of the guys I have used as a long-distance mentors. The books and material written by these guys have done more for my business and career than anyone I can name.     48 Days to the Work You Love – Dan Miller   Dan Miller and his book 48 Days To The Work You Love is where my journey began. Dan inspired me to pursue the work that I love. I originally discovered Dan and his work by listening to the Dave Ramsey Show.   If you are looking for your purpose, check out Dan's material. He is a true entrepreneur.   The thing I love about Dan is his simplicity. Dan isn't knee-deep in technology, like a lot of online business people. Though he has embraced the digital landscape more recently with the launch of his membership site, he is more about creating simple money-making opportunities that are right in front of us.   Whether is it reselling cars, selling digital content or running a gym, he has done it all. Dan can see a business opportunity anywhere. He has great tools to help you find your passion and the work you love.   Dan's most popular resource is "48 Low or No Cost Business Ideas". These are great. When you read this e-book, you'll say to yourself, "Why didn't I think of that?" Dan has great ideas. The inspiration is a huge bonus.   [Find information on Dan Miller's material HERE.]     Internet Business Mastery – Jeremy Frandsen & Jason Van Orden   Jason Van Orden and Jeremy Frandsen at Internet Business Mastery have great information to help turn your knowledge into a business. I first discovered them during a session at New Media Expo. That presentation turned me onto their podcast.   Internet Business Mastery is not only a great podcast, but a course that has helped me refine my business focus. Both Jeremy & Jason have launched various other businesses. They have been there and done it.   In the Internet Business Mastery Academy, you learn how to develop your ideal freedom lifestyle. That leads into your freedom business blueprint. You learn how to design your single motivating purpose, create your money magnets, develop your list and more.   This has been one of the best investments I have made. The course has really refined my business plan and philosophy. If you are building an online business, this material can help you move you forward.   [Find information on Jeremy, Jason and Internet Business Mastery HERE.]     Platform University – Michael Hyatt   Michael Hyatt and Platform University have helped me organize my message and build my platform.   I like organization. Checklists are my friend. Step-by-step processes that allow me to add some creativity on top of it are tools I enjoy.   Michael Hyatt has a great membership site with Platform University. It is based on his book Platform, which is a must read as you develop your podcast. There is great learning inside the community. He only opens membership a couple times a year for enrollment. I got in early on this one and haven't looked back since.   Inside Platform University, you will find Master Classes where Michael interviews other experts to dive deep into various subjects each month. In the Backstage Pass area, Michael shows you how he operates his platform. There are live member calls each month, member makeovers and so much more.   There is so much information inside Platform University, I don't have enough time to get through all of it each month. I use the great material I find most useful and dip into the other stuff when I find time. When I have questions about specific topics, I can usually find the answer inside Platform University.   [Find information on Michael Hyatt HERE.]         There you have six people who can help you move your podcast and business forward.   Dave Jackson can help you with the technical aspects of your show.   Daniel J. Michael has also written a new book called Living Forward with executive coach Daniel Harkavy.  It's an excellent read and I highly recommend it. Purchase "Living Forward" on Amazon here.

Podcast Resources – Episode 117 (These tools can be found on the resource page at PodcastTalentCoach.com. Most links on that page are affiliate links. I receive a variable commission for all purchases made using those links.)   I have recently received questions from listeners looking to launch a podcast in 2016. I thought this would be a good time to review the tools I use to in my business. This includes the tools I use to create my podcast, website and newsletter. We will also review the resources I use to learn, grow and develop.   This episode is an encore presentation of an earlier episode you may have missed. If you did catch it last time, let this serve as inspiration and a little refresher.   I have been using most of these resources for at least 24 months. Some have been used longer. A couple tools are more recent. For the most part, I have been a long-time user and have been quite happy with each of them. That is why I feel confident recommending them to you. You can find affiliate links to most of these online at PodcastTalentCoach.com.   COACHING RESOURCE This list doesn't include much technical information, such as mixers, processors and software. I leave that to Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. He is the tech expert that helps me. If you are looking for help setting up the studio, Dave is your guy. He leads off my resources.   TECHNICAL TOOLS A few technical tools from my studio include my mic, my mac and a few web tools.   My studio mic is an ElectroVoice RE20. This runs about $450. It is a high quality mic. This mic is probably much more than a beginning podcaster needs. However, if you are serious about podcasting, this is a great mic.   My backup mic is a Audio-Technica ATR-2100. It is a quality USB mic for the money. This costs around $60.   For editing, I use Adobe Audition in the studio. I will occasionally use Garage Band for quick projects or when I'm traveling.   I use a Mac Book Pro 13” for the flexibility. I cost me $1,200.   My mp3s are tagged with ID3 Editor from PA Software. The price tag was $15.   I host my audio with Libsyn. It runs $20/month.   My URLs were purchased through GoDaddy. The price really depends on the URL. You can usually find a deal. After the initial deal, I pay about $45/year.   I have a website on Homestead and one on Host Gator with Wordpress. Homestead is a stand alone site builder. Host Gator just hosts my Wordpress site. Homestead is $20/month. HostGator is $135/year, just over $11/month. Wordpress is free.   On my website, I use Paypal for my transactions. Most of my providers accept it. Plus, they have a card option for my customers.   I use Aweber for my newsletter. It is $196/year. Just over $16/month. I looked at Mail Chimp. Both are very similar services if you have a list under 5,000.   Canva.com is a decent resource for creating graphics. They have a decent photo library as well. Most photos are about $1/photo.   I self-published my workbook through Create Space, an Amazon company. You simply upload a .pdf. It is fairly simple to use. Not very expensive. They also sell the workbook through Amazon and converted it to Kindle.   I am in the process of creating a membership portal through WishList Member. $297. They have solid training videos. I am not yet complete with this one.   LEARNING TOOLS Dan Miller and 48Days.com is where it all started. He has great tools to help you find your passion and the work you love.   Internet Business Mastery is a great podcast and course that have helped me refine my business focus. Jeremy & Jason have been there and done it.   Michael Hyatt has a great membership site with Platform University. It is based on his book Platform, which is a must read as you develop your podcast. There is great learning inside the community. He only opens membership a couple times a year for enrollment. I got in early on this one and haven't looked back since.   Audible.com has turned my car into a mobile classroom. I am usually listening to a couple books a month on top of the podcasts. You can get a free book when you use my affiliate link on the resources page.   Most of all, I cannot say enough about Dave Jackson and the School of Podcasting. If you want to learn the technical nuts and bolts, check out his course, membership and training tools.   You can find affiliate links to most of these online at PodcastTalentCoach.com. I would appreciate the support if you choose to use any of these links and great products.   I would love to help you with your podcast. “How do I really start my own online business?” This is a question I hear pretty often. Recently I found myself saying, “Well, it's pretty simple. You just need to…” and then I heard myself spewing out a long list of stuff that was anything but simple. Clearly I needed a simpler, more cohesive answer to this question. That's what this episode is all about. Announcements: If you enjoy the podcast, I would consider it a great favor if you subscribe (and leave a review) in iTunes. Tip Of The Week  This week I'm recommending another book, Ryan Holiday's The Obstacle Is The Way.  In life we are often frustrated by the obstacles we face. Throughout history, there has been a different way of viewing obstacles. A way that was familiar to John D. Rockefeller, Amelia Earhart, Ulysses S. Grant, and Steve Jobs. A belief that the obstacle is not in the way, but that it is the way. The philosophy behind this belief was articulated by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who struggled to define the way of excellence in any circumstance. In this book, Holiday spells out in simple language that very philosophy. “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” — Marcus Aurelius   Spiritual Foundations What do you trust God with? Over the last few weeks, my life has been deeply impacted by an insight I received from my wife Lynn. In this section of the show, I explain the insight and how to put it to work in your own life. Welcome to episode #375 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Back when book publishers were scoffing at the idea that people would read a book on a digital screen, let alone on their iPhones, Michael Hyatt was paying close attention. Back when authors thought that blogging was a waste of valuable text (and not even thinking about Twitter), Michael Hyatt was paying close attention. Back when book publishers had no bearings on the future of book publishing, let alone as an amazing place for authors and book publishers to connect with fans, Michael Hyatt was paying close attention. He would, eventually, leverage social media to better connect himself, the authors he worked with and the book publishing company that he helped push to tremendous success to embrace all things digital. Hyatt is the former Chairman and CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers (one of the largest book publishing companies in the U.S.), and he's also the author of the bestselling business book, Platform - Get Noticed in a Noisy World.
