2002. The pop culture landscape would never be the same again. No, we're not talking about Robbie Williams £80m, six album deal (although Rudebox would indeed shift the landscape, if not exactly many copies). We're not even talking about Pop Idol top ten contestant Jessica Garlick coming (joint) third in Eurovision, although that was pretty good. We could be talking about the arrival of 6Music and BBC Four (TOTP RERUNS!!).But no, all of these memorable highlights take a positively backseat position against the stellar backdrop that was, quite literally, the 2002 Pop World! Boybands!Girl groups!Kylie!Coldplay!ABS!Don't be fooled listeners, 2002 consisted of twelve months that gave us pop memories like no other. Atomic Kitten rode the Tide! Britney loved Rock (‘n' Roll)! Daniel Bedingfield loved James Dean (possibly)! And amongst the idols and stars and academy's of TV talent shows increasingly speedy conveyor belts, the decade they continued to call the ‘noughties' moved up a gear thanks to Sugababes, Liberty X, Ms Dynamite and countless others. Where could it all end, we collectively asked (quite possibly via MSN messenger, or on a dial-up webchat forum)? And who better to navigate the BEST SELLING compilation of 2002, NOW 53, than senior producer for Listen the award winning premium podcast company David Manero! Taking time away from the Kitchen Disco with Sophie Ellis Bextor, Traitors Uncloaked, and the Pop Top Ten pod with Scott Mills and Rylan Clark, David shares his memories, hits and misses from the 43 Top Chart Hits across his two CDs (and a broken case). And, along the way, rediscover some genuine lost in the vault moments, find out what NOW whiplash is and how to avoid it, consider how the Spanglish Rappers Delight conquered the world, and marvel at how Teutonic techno troublers Scooter really were such a Big Thing. So, put down your Nokia 3310 or your Motorola Razr V3, switch off Big Brother 3, come out of the record department of Sainsbury's and tune into the best of 2002!I'm seein' stars, I can't believe my eyes… Hosted on Acast. Hello and welcome to episode 171 of the ACPG podcast. This week Ben is zooming with Los Angeles where he spoke with Nick and Kelsey of the fantastic Local Natives. Now, I (Ben) have been a massive fan of Local Natives since their debut album Gorilla Manor and especially the songs Sun Hands and Airplanes. So it was great to talk to them about that but also the release of their new album Time Waits For No One. We spoke about the new album, record release parties, and touring, and more. The album was preceded at the tail-end of last year by the swaggering psychedelia-tinged indie-pop of ‘Just Before the Morning' which jumped up to the B-list at 6Music, as well as seeing them doing an LA residency back in December that saw them joined on the stage by contemporaries including Best Coast, Darkside and Miya Folick. The past year or so has also seen them hit up Jimmy Kimmel twice, one of which saw them joined by Sharon Van Etten for their collaborative track ‘Lemon', while they also headed out on a sold-out US tour last summer as well as stop-offs at Lollapalooza, Outsidelands and a bunch more staples of the US festival circuit. The band are also celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their commercial breakthrough Hummingbird album this year, which feels ripe for revisiting (it is still a total knockout). This new set finds the band linking with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton (Death Cab, Sharon Van Etten, St. Vincent) for a run of sessions across a number of historic LA studios that birthed a set of songs rooted in metamorphosis: taking in newfound fatherhood, periods of isolation, loss and identity crisis. Through it all though, the band were reminded that the constants are the people you love and - in their case - their fellow bandmates. While the album's title Time Will Wait For No One has its ominous undertones, the sentiment at the core of the album is that your loved ones will. Can't recommend spending a bit of headphone time with the new record enough if you get a moment, the production on it is glorious - something they've really honed over the four albums to date that have seen them quietly become one of the most consistently acclaimed bands of the last decade (not a single album below a 75 on Metacritic). Thank you to Nick and Kelsey, and Alex and Vanessa for all their help with this episode.

Since launching a solo career in early 2017, following a string of successes in various bands, the London based alternative-pop artist has cultivated a growing and dedicated following of fans, by preaching values in her music around feminism and sexual fluidity, reflected by experimental production and sombre melodies. Georgia prides herself in being an accomplished producer and prolific writer, insisting that the industry moves towards a more gender equal landscape, encouraging artists to work with female producers. Since founding FMP World (Female Music Producers World) in early 2020, she has gathered a community of more than 3,000 women in music production, creating a platform for their voices and talent to be heard. Throughout the release of her debut EP release, 'Womanhood', and subsequent single releases, Georgia has received acclaim from Radio 1's Future Pop Anthems, Capital, Radio 1Xtra, BBC Introducing, 6Music, Spotify's NMF (UK plus 10 other countries!) and influential publications including Stylist, Wonderland, Clash, Atwood Magazine, plus more.  2023 will see some exciting collabs for Georgia, plus several high profile writing credits (more details to be announced soon). She's also playing a string of festival dates over the summer, ahead of her heading out on a UK headline tour in September visiting cities including Brighton, Manchester and London.  In an era of Instagram perfection, mental health crisis and growing pressures on young women - Georgia Meek is here to make a stand and spread some feminist joy through empowered pop anthems, she comments, “Honestly it's really important to me to put out pop music with integrity - songs from the heart that give something more to the listener than just a catchy hook. If my music helps to heal even one person, I'll be happy”.

Cerys Matthews is a Welsh singer, presenter and writer. I first became aware of her when I was starting out with my first band Theaudience. She was then with her band Catatonia, which was big - and part of the Cool Cymru trend. After Cerys left that band she went on a voyage of musical discovery while living in a cabin in the woods near Tennessee - an experience she draws on to this day when curating her radio shows. Her excellent 6Music show is a big part of our Sundays. We love it.I spoke to Cerys at the beginning of December when she had just launched her new children's book. It's a bite-size take on Dylan Thomas's 'Under Milkwood', which she wants to bring to a new audience, namely little children.Cerys's three children are teenagers now, and we talked about mothering in the teen years, compared to the full-on baby and toddler years, which led her to share her story of her worst ever parenting experience... on a long-haul flight.Cerys talked about coming back to the UK form America, to bring her children up. She said it took her 6 years in America to appreciate Britain, including the BBC.As it was early December, we mused on how we all try and create the perfect Christmas Day, based on family traditions started in Christmases past. We agreed we can't be all things to all people at all times - and Cerys said that next time she's coming back as a man...with a wife! Cerys also shared that she's not drawn to beach holidays but loves an adventure, and she told me about her life-changing trip to Everest base camp which she, her husband and her two youngest boys did 3 years ago, to celebrate her 50th birthday. Her enthusiasm for it was so infectious I'm going to look into it myself, especially as a) she said the children loved it - and b) it sounded like it involved lots of stops for chips!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner welcoming you to Epi319 of Succotash. And thank you for making us your destination for this period of listening that you are currently embarking upon. This show started 11+ years ago as a way to feature comedy people and their podcasts, which we here at Succotash have been calling "soundcasts" as a way to attempt to separate the medium from the dead format known as the iPod that it is named for. As time went on, the soundcast proliferated in a way that is still quite surprising at times. More's the merrier, more for show creator and executive producer Marc Hershon and myself to choose to listen to, take snippets from, and ultimately present a few of them to you, the listener. If this is the first soundcast that you've ever listened to I'd like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing us. I've got 3 clips to share with you, but first: I'd like to point out that last week in Episode #318 of Succotash, Mr. Hershon brought you a quadrilogy of clips from soundcasts that contain comedy AND sports, namely Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson, Sportsfeld, The Grade Cricketer (that included guest commentary from our friend Jason "Jabs" McNamara (The DHead Factor, Boganwood) from Canberra, Australia), and View from the Cheap Seats. It is the first time in this show's history that it has featured an all-sports-related soundcast lineup, and I found it to be actually quite an interesting listen. You can find that episode in our show archive at www.succotashshow.com or pretty much wherever you might listen to soundcasts in your own personal future. The clips I will be sharing with you this week are from the soundcasts called Jake Yapp presents: Not Today, Thank You, Strong Songs, and Trashy Trashy. I feel like this episode is loaded with feminine energy, but I'm not sure that I am the best person to evaluate that. I will let the listener decide. This episode is sponsored by Henderson's Pants new Pushover Pants, the perfect trouser for those who feel a mite unbalanced. CLIPS Jake Yapp Presents: Not Today, Thank YouA once-daily-now-occasional podcast featuring Jake Yapp, as seen and heard on Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe, Radio 4 and 6Music. Our clip hails from the episode that dropped on October 7th, 2020, with guest Ellen Rose entitled "Game Saves". Interestingly, there is no mention of Ms. Rose in the show description, nor is there any additional information about her…so I looked her up! According to a page on youtube.fandom.com/wiki/Icklenellierose she is listed as an "English YouTuber best known for being a host of Outside Xtra, as well as being a former host of Xbox On." Strong Songs Music: it's good. On each episode of Strong Songs, host Kirk Hamilton takes listeners inside a piece of music, breaking it down and figuring out what makes it work. This soundcast features the type of granular approach to music analysis that, as a lifelong music nerd, I appreciate a great deal. I took a clip from the August 11th, 2022, show entitled, "Help Me" by Joni Mitchell. (Host's note: I have listened to a few episodes of Strong Songs" and had been looking for an excuse to clip the show for our show. Thankfully, this episode I have clipped for you happened, and I could not resist the urge to clip this show any longer, as this is one of my all-time favorite songs!) Trashy Trashy I first featured a clip of Trashy Trashy's 3rd episode way back in August of 2020 and now, they have reached their 100th episode, and are steadily sailing ahead to their 200th, one would presume. Over the last 2 years, this soundcast has become one of my weekly regular listens that I try to make a point of getting to when it drops, usually on Monday of every week. For those who have never heard it before, the description says: "A podcast for garbage people by garbage people. We cover trashy news stories. Hosted by Cassandra Cardenes and Erika Curry. This clip, featuring dog parks and their people, is from their episode 101, from August 8th of 2022, titled #NOTALLDRESSING - In which, its episode description is a repeat of the previously mentioned SHOW description. It also includes their social media links, and a series of links to all of the news stories they are sourcing for this particular episode, including the weekly inclusion of a "Dumpster Fire of the Week" story. And that completes your journey through the selected bits of audio that other people took the time to commit to a more-or-less permanent format, that I have taken the time to commit to an additional more-or-less permanent format, that you have taken some of your time to listen to, and I am very grateful for that. I am grateful for a great many things of late. I am grateful for the friends and family that I both have had and, through the recent nuptials of my brother, I now have. Or…I also have…now… Something like that. It was an amazing time seeing many people I had not for 20-30 years perhaps. It was amazing food and the ceremony was both very moving and succinct. I'm grateful that my parents were able to attend a marriage of their child, in their lifetime. I'm grateful for the furiously expanding amount of perspective that time and life has brung, and is bringing to me. I can even say that I am grateful for the soundcast as a format. I don't know if any of my assorted audio content post-2002 would have even existed as it does had it not been for the soundcast. Much of it does directly because of the soundcast and because of other soundcasters sharing it with their listeners over the last significant portion of my life so far. So, I can only close by saying "Thank you" to all involved, and to remind you that next week there will be something else for you to listen to: Epi320. It will most likely be hosted by Marc Hershon and will feature his interview with Christine Blackburn, friend of Succotash and host of the longer-running-than-our-show, Story Worthy, as well as the Story Smash soundcast game show, AND the brand new soundcast My Life in Three Songs! So…if you enjoyed this, and somewhere out there in "The rest of YOUR life" - land someone should happen to ask you if you heard anything interesting or good lately, and we spring to mind…by all means tell them so. It's what we mean when we ask you to please pass the Succotash? — Tyson Saner

She grew up in Dorset, gained a BA (hons) in Fine Art at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Since 2003 she has developed a unique drawing technique, employing a manual typewriter as a drawing tool.Rathbone draws images from life using her typewriter, instinctively translating what she sees into an array of letters, number and symbols chosen for their shape and textural values resulting in beautiful enigmatic images that encourage the viewer to keep looking from different distances, reading more into it each time. She develops and exhibits images based around compelling themes and often incorporates live audio/visual performances by typing before an audience with video projection, sound effects and collaborations with other artists. Her art is used to reflect the world and people around her, capturing moments through this artistic and accessible medium. Typewriter Art does not overcomplicate but allows a moment to be depicted and celebrated in a true snapshot of beauty and poignancy. She has appeared numerous times on television, including BBC News, BBC World News, The One Show and SKY Landscape Artist of the Year as well as BBC Radio 2, 4 and 6Music. It's St. Patricks day so we thought we would bring you a legend of Afrobeat (after we chat about Irish B-Sides and The Horeslips obviously). Dele Sosimi joined Fela Kuti's band as a teenager and learned the tricks of the trade from the Godfather of Afrobeat and his stickman Tony Allen. Dele spent years learning from the best in the business, playing 8 hour gigs, shuffling through Fela's own private vinyl collection and of course negotiating a route through the difficulties of being a political musician under a brutal regime. Dele rose from keyboard player to band leader of the Egypt 80. After Fela's death Dele found himself in London and built himself an incredible reputation for being leading one of the hottest bands around, bring Afrobeat to a new audience. Still touring and recording with elite musicians from around the world Dele took the time to talk to us about all that he has learned along his turbulent musical journey. An absolutely fascinating interview we know you will enjoy. Before we get into that though Deb and Eamon discuss 6Music's 20th birthday, an incredibly long box set and what the B-Side means to a music lover. A very special episode for the Memorabilia Podcast - our first indie superstar guest in Caretaker Race singer/songrwriter and Loft guitarist Andy Strickland. Andy kindly took the time to speak to us for over 90 minutes about his band's superb 1990 debut album 'Hangover Square'. For the first time, we also have music clips to accompany the tales behind the songwriting and producing. Thank you Andy! There's a lot packed in to the lengthy episode and some wonderful stories shared by Andy talking about his time in 'The Loft', the break-up they went through, subsequently hitting number 3 in the Netflix music chart above Glen Campbell, forming The Caretaker Race, getting signed to legendary producer Stephen Street's Foundation record label, and everything you could possibly need to know about the LP Hangover Square. There's mentions for writer and broadcaster Danny Baker, Ian Dickson (the Australian Simon Cowell), Terry Hall, Johnny Marr, Lloyd Cole, Cherry Red Records, producer John Parish, journalist Jerry Smith, 6Music radio presenter Steve Lamacq, The Sundays, and why he realised he wasn't cut out for the world of business and being the owner of a record label. We can't thank Andy enough for giving up his time and for his patience during the recording. The Leeds to the Isle of Wight connection was a little unreliable and we encountered a number of technical hitches forcing us to swtich recording platforms after just a few minutes of getting going, so apologies for the imperfections in the opening minutes of the interview. Andy stayed with us to review the top 10 UK singles at the time of release for Hangover Square and finished with a brilliant story about a night out in Paris with the singer whose single from the movie 'Days of Thunder' was at the very top of the hit parade in September 1990. Andy left us with a 'hot-tip' for a new band to listen and watch out for - the Isle of Wight's very own 'Wet Leg'. In fact, the tip was that hot that the tickets we were going to buy to see them in Leeds in April 2022 have already sold out! We had the pleasure of interviewing Kojaque over Zoom video! Kojaque has released his much-anticipated debut album Town's Dead, which is available now on Soft Boy Records / Different Recordings. Already receiving widespread acclaim, and with further support across Radio 1, 1xtra, 6Music, COLORs, and more, Town's Dead is Kojaque's follow-up to debut mixtape Deli Daydreams: a concept piece which became the first release of its kind to be nominated for the prestigious Choice Music Prize and took Kojaque everywhere from tours with slowthai and Lana Del Rey to a Boiler Room documentary on the influence of his label and collective Soft Boy.One of the year's most distinct debuts, Town's Dead is an expansive and urgent tour-de-force that speeds headlong into sex, violence, and the claustrophobia of your hometown. Within, Kojaque documents a tumultuous love triangle as it unfolds across New Year's Eve, with results that are as cinematic as they are political and deeply personal. Dark corners of parks, bedrooms, clubs, streets, and psyches are excavated, and pouring over the rubble is an artist unafraid of the vulnerabilities that are exposed when the voice rings true because there's just no point in being anything else. Through breakups and breakdowns, Town's Dead teeters on the brink, spilling from the mind of a singular talent onto streets scaffolded by a broken system but still suffused with love.Town's Dead sees Kojaque build a distinct world and invite the listener inside it - and it's one in which music, film, humor, and at times visceral storytelling all go hand in hand. Few contemporary rappers, after all, can claim to be an award-winning film-maker (for his ‘Love In Technicolor' film), have been invited to talk at Trinity College's Philosophical Society, or develop work in residence for the RHA gallery. Kojaque is part of a new wave of Irish artists making the world sit-up with blistering and sophisticated art - ideas and work that emerged from a social revolution, stonewalled by late-stage capitalism. Welcome to Town's Dead, where it is - despite everything - New Year's Eve, the countdown to midnight is on, and Betty's fella's got a gun…We want to hear from you! Anil Sebastian is a multifaceted artist, producer and vocalist producing some of the most unique and otherworldly music to emerge from the UK in recent years.  As well as their solo identity, Anil Sebastian is also in Icelandic band Hrím, with singer Ösp and producer Cherif Hashizume. Sebastian is also the creative director of pioneering sonic branding agency DLMDD.   Already a familiar face to many in the industry as co-founder and director of the legendary London Contemporary Voices Choir, Anil's work has seen them regularly working on arrangements for and appearing alongside the likes of Alt-J, Manu Delago, Imogen Heap, Elena Tonra (Daughter), Kelly Lee Owens, Eivor, Eska, Nitin Sawhney, Laura Mvula, Sam Smith and U2. The choir has performed at several Burberry fashion shows, The British Fashion Awards, the 2020 Tommy Hilfiger show, two BBC Proms and also features on the Harry Potter Play soundtrack. Anil's choral version of Amber Run's ‘I Found' (which LCV performed with the band for Mahogany) has had over 4 million streams. Having released their debut album “Mesonoxian”, co-produced by Ingmar Kamalagharan and Cherif Hashizume (Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, David Byrne) in late 2017, collecting support on the way from i-D, Stereogum, Clash and Line of Best Fit online as well as radio support across Radio 2, 3, 6Music, BBC London and the Asian Network, the album campaign culminated in a sold out show at London's legendary ICA. “A gorgeous listen from start to finish...brave at every turn” Album Review, Line of Best Fit Since then Anil has immersed themself once again in the creative process, contributing co-writes/features the debut album of legendary producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Imogen Heap, Robyn), Björk percussionist Manu Delago's Silver Kobalt album as well as taking on several bespoke commissions for sync, contributing choral arrangements to queer artist and activist Nakhane's debut album, and co-writing tracks for The Cinematic Orchestra side-project Hunrosa. In October 2020 Anil Sebastian's immersive short film Daffodil was released on NOWNESS. Daffodil has been created with support from Momentum Funding by PRS Foundation, Arts Council and National Lottery   Directed by Thiing Studios and written by Anil Sebastian, Daffodil explores the future of artificial intelligence and looks at what it means to be human and how we define identity. Combining animation by Thomas Rawle with slick live action footage and archival footage from Sebastian's childhood, Daffodil is a surreal examination of the moral implications of artificial intelligence through Sebastian's imagination. Set in the near future, Daffodil tells the story of a scientist (played by Anil Sebastian themself) gone rogue and we see them attempting to bring back the conscious mind of a child in the form of an AI. In a parallel, otherworldly meta-verse this playful creature is being created through animation. Paired effortlessly with the film and archival footage, Sebastian's exquisite avant-garde art pop soundtrack provides the perfect backdrop for this mesmerising cinematic experience. The film was shown at Normal? Festival of the Brain as well as at a private screening underground at The Brunel Shaft in London.  For Sebastian's cinematic debut, they have collaborated with an impressive list of some of the most forward thinking musicians, artists and thinkers in the UK. Sebastian holds a degree in Physics and Philosophy and they are one of the most unique voices and producers in the UK scene having worked with some of the most iconic global stars such as Imogen Heap, U2 and Bjork producer Guy Sigsworth. Daffodil also sees a contribution by Anil's brother Ingmar Kamalagharan as the co-producer of the film and live drummer on the soundtrack. Kamalagharan has a degree in Astronomy from UCL and works at the UK Space Agency  and he is a long-time collaborator of the producer and innovator Cherif Hashizume (David Byrne, Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno) in machine learning, interactive music installations and innovative software. Daffodil is a Descartesian meditation on existence and consciousness. As technology continues to infiltrate our public and private life, how can we reach an authentic form of being? Can an artificial intelligence gain consciousness and can it truly exist? Would you bring back someone you lost and if so, would they really be them? By combining science fiction elements with intimate, personal storytelling through encapsulating visuals and soundtrack, Daffodil is a film not to miss.  http://www.anilsebastian.com https://www.instagram.com/anil.sebastian

Making things better and making better things

The idea was a simple one - delve deeper in to the minds of the people and their processes behind the music. We asked each artist to select one of their own tracks to go under the microscope. Our third and final colab podcast with the Reasons To Be Cheerful crew features Sarah Cosgrove from Low Girl. Sarah started writing songs at the age of 12 using the process as a coping mechanism during what she describes as “lonely teenage years”. In the time since, she has been busily honing her craft, with a focus on writing about universal themes and emotions from a singularly feminine perspective. Citing artists ranging from Brockhampton to The Beatles, to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, King Princess and Phoebe Bridgers as inspiration, the breadth of Low Girls’ influences is clear to hear on her debut EP but never detracts from her own unique identity and innate song writing ability. A seamless collection of 5 tracks, it is a body of work that exudes talent, confidence and personality. With recent airplay on 6Music, RadioX and Radio 1, we'll be keeping a close eye on the burgeoning career destined for Low Girl.
