"Honor and treat people with dignity and respect and give them all of the information they need because you're then only going to get people who go, yes, let's get on a call and talk about it." ~ Winnie Anderson   In this episode of Straight Talk About Sales, I am joined by Winnie Anderson, a sales and marketing expert with a background in HR and organizational development. She's had extensive experience in cold calling, door to door B2B sales, inside sales, and copywriting and is passionate about helping clients make informed decisions. Winnie had to figure out how to build her brand and get recognition which led her to discover the power of information and how it could help buyers make decisions. She promotes the idea of giving buyers the information they need to make a decision to avoid an adversarial sales process and to foster trust. Winnie learned to answer the questions her buyers had and educate them on their buying journey, understanding that buyers need to be treated with respect and not tricked into making a purchase.   Here's what you can expect from this episode:  Uncovering the Value of Content in Generating Leads and Sales Exploring the Impact of the Pandemic on Technology Adoption and B2B Purchasing Uncovering the Hidden Elements of a Buyer Persona to Craft Targeted Content What is Billboard Content and How to Leverage It Remember to keep adding tips and strategies to your own sales toolkit that will improve your revenue outcomes and equip you to serve your clients at a higher level.   Resources mentioned in this episode:  Winnie Anderson's Manifesto Winnie Anderson - Website Winnie Anderson - LinkedIn Winnie Anderson - Facebook Order "Sell Like A Lady"   Connect with Straight Talk About Sales If you haven't done so already, subscribe to the podcast. March 7th was the 20th anniversary of her car accident. She was left with a Traumatic Brain Injury and other injuries. During the recovery process, she was flooded with memories she had suppressed about abusive childhood. She ended up having a nervous breakdown dealing with those memories and the emotional scars the experience left. The conclusion she came to is we all develop strategies to deal with whatever we go through in our lives and at some point, those strategies -- that helped us to survive -- begin to actively hold us back because they no longer serve us or serve where we are now in our lives. Her examples would include things like perfectionism....an avoidant conflict style....to name a couple. Once she came to that realization she was able to begin the process of healing from my emotional wounds and taking control back over her life.  The workbook that helped her begin the process of healing from abuse: http://www.ascasupport.org/_downloads/survivor_to_thriver.pdfThis is the author / therapist who helped her. Many introverted writers resist marketing their services and avoid doing what they need to do to grow their businesses. Does that mean you’re doomed to fail as a self-employed writer if you’re an introvert? Not at all. My guest this week is Winnie Anderson, a coach for introverted service-based professionals, as well as the host of The Courageous Entrepreneur podcast.  She teaches people how to resolve the tug-of-war between needing to stand out but not wanting to stand out. In this episode, she explains why so many writers resist taking consistent action to stand out, and to do it in a way that feels good to them.

SHOW NOTES As Introverts one of the things we have to check in with ourselves about is whether the issue we're wrestling with or that seems to be keeping us from taking action is truly part of being an introvert or is it connected to a deeper issue we wrestle with. And often, if you find yourself resisting something, avoiding taking action, there's probably a fear that's holding you back. I can tell you from experience that until you fully face that fear it's unlikely you'll be able to fully move forward with the courage, confidence, and clarity you need. That's the conclusion I came to and I thought you probably needed to as well. That's why I wanted to have today's guest on the show. To say Suzie Gruber is a personal development coach is a simplification of her skills I think but that's technically her title. She uses her skills and training to help professionals uncover any survival strategies that we carry from childhood that we may still be unknowingly using today. She'll support you in developing the ability to detach from the emotions connected to an issue, and support you to examine it as you develop new strategies to deal with it. Her clients go on to be more productive, achieve their business and professional goals, and do it all with a greater sense of aliveness and ease so their work and their life is more satisfying. Keep in mind that we're not giving you medical advice. Suzie is not a licensed therapist or a doctor of any sort and neither am I. This episode like all of the episodes of The Courageous Entrepreneur Show is designed to inform, educate, and entertain you. If this brings up any issues or feelings for you please consider reaching out to a professional for diagnosis, care, and treatment. Listening to this show is not a replacement for the care of a trained and licensed professional. That said, listen in as Suzie explains: What survival strategies are and how they stay with us through adulthood What it takes to heal from a traumatic past What our Inner Critic is and what happens to us when we hear it in our heads How we can become our own abuser And how we can navigate the 8 strategic priorities we need to manage as entrepreneurs. SHOW NOTES If you're on your second or third career act and are growing your own business, one of the big things you may be wrestling with is fearlessly communicating your Point of View and trusting that by doing so you'll attract the right clients, the right opportunities, and the right referral partners. We've spent decades of our lives trying to fit in – in classrooms as children and young people; in offices, companies, and organizations where we worked and where our economic lives were technically in the hands of our employers; and in our family of origin and social circles. Then here we are out on our own and what's needed is often the opposite – we need to stand out as unique. While in corporate life we may have lead departments, divisions, and whole businesses, we took action with a certain amount of comfort in knowing that we could successfully address whatever came up and we understood the parameters within which we could lead. Even if others inside the organization considered us fearless for those times when we stood up for a conviction. It's not quite the same as standing up for what we believe, putting our point of view out there and putting ourselves on the line the way that's necessary when you're self-employed and you're the face of your brand. This issue of leading, being seen as a leader, and standing out can be downright scary for some of us. It's a very big part of why I named this show The Courageous Entrepreneur. I wanted to recognize the challenges, be inspired by and celebrate those who are courageous, and learn from experts who can help us do that. And that sums up why I wanted today's guest on the show. Nukhet Hendricks is a Women's Leadership Coach and Consultant as well as the executive director of a nonprofit headquartered in North Dakota. She grew the nonprofit animal shelter from a low 6-figure to a solid 7-figure budget. Nukhet continues to grow the organization while mentoring the emerging women leaders whom she has the privilege to guide. She holds a Master of Science degree in Public and Human Service Administration and has been a nonprofit executive for over 28 years in various leadership roles. Nukhet is originally from Turkey and has called the USA home since 1987 when she became a naturalized citizen. A fiercely independent spiritual rebel and ocean lover with an unquenchable gypsy soul, Nukhet is always moving towards new frontiers! A word of caution about this episode if you're listening to it on speakers where others can here. There are a couple of instances of profanity in this episode. Particularly around our fears of being called the word that's another name for a female dog. So be sure to either where a headset when you listen or keep the volume low so you don't expose other ears to language you might not want them to hear or they may not want to hear. It doesn't come up a lot but definitely at least once early in the conversation. Listen in as Nukhet and I discuss:  Her definition of leadership and why it's important for women to answer the call to lead   The important role of resilience in emotional health and how we can develop that   How to develop and maintain strong boundaries   Her explanation of authenticity and how to handle the challenges of being authentic   The fears associated with being a female leader and conditioning we experienced in organizational life   Nukhet also shares her thoughts on the 8 strategic actions entrepreneurs regularly have to take to grow a business and create the life they dream of. Those of us in service professions like coaching, consulting, healing, or other professional problem solvers start our businesses because we: Have been given talents that we love to use and want to use all the time     Feel called to do the work we do    Are on a mission to bring about some change in the world   Have likely figured out a solution to a problem and we want to share that solution with the world But then we realize we have to figure out how to get clients so we can do that thing we love and do so well. And it's in that moment that we often come face to face with emotional baggage we never knew we had or baggage we thought we had tucked away in that closet in our mind. But until we deal with this issue and recognize selling is just helping people make a choice that's best for them, we're left to struggle. Struggling to make sales means we aren't generating the income we want and need to survive or thrive. We're not helping ourselves, our families, or the causes we care about. We're stressed. We're fearful. We can get depressed. You get the picture. So we've got to not just figure out the whole sales process. We've got to get comfortable with it and actually embrace it as part of serving others. That's right. It's part of serving others. And that's what we're going to focus on in today's episode and why I wanted today's guest on the show. SHOW NOTES Experts tell us the key to success is to find a problem and solve it. Many of the most successful entrepreneurs had a problem themselves, recognized there was nothing out there to solve it and like that little red hen from the children's story decided to do it themselves. Today's episode is a great example of that. It's also an example of how the best solutions are often the simplest. In this episode, criminal defense attorney Judith Samson shares how she created a product that solves a problem she had herself and ended up building a successful side business. Listen in as Judith explains: * How she came up with the idea for the bra bridge * The process of getting a sample product made * Why she had to get the product made in China * Things to watch out for to protect your ideas and intellectual property * And some hidden benefits of raising boys while building a business focused on women's breasts As always, listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode Resources Guest Contact Information Get your Bra Brdges direct at Judith's Bra Bridge website  Judith and Bra Bridge on social media Facebook  YouTube  Twitter  Instagram Related Episodes Bernadette Giorgi -- Getting a Product on QVC Ready to Make Your Next Big Leap? SHOW NOTES I'm sure you believe you're optimistic and have an abundance-focused mindset. You may say affirmations, think positive thoughts, and take responsibility for your thoughts, beliefs, and outcomes. The standard formula for abundance is Ask, Believe, Receive. You may "Ask", and you certainly say you Believe. So why aren't you receiving? Have you ever deflected a compliment? You know someone says "that shirt looks nice on you" and you say “oh this old thing?” Have you ever gotten a compliment about your work and said “Oh it was nothing. Anyone could have done it.” Then you want to listen closely and maybe even take some notes because you may very well be putting up blocks to receiving what you want. You may be what Nat Couropmitree calls a Conditional Receiver. I know I'm one. Nat guides visionary leaders to live their lives in a match with the energetic frequency of their truest selves. Tapping into this powerful source of love, respect, and value frees them from the exhausting cycle of working harder to gain something that can never be achieved through more effort, more work, more sacrifice, and instead creates space for them to experience the ease, joy, and adventure in the present moment. Nat is also the host of the Bold Magnificence podcast where his guests share stories about having the courage to live in alignment with what lights them up. And what lights Nat up is experimenting with exotic cuisine, finding adventure in far-flung places, and dancing the Argentine tango with his beloved wife Olga.   Listen in as Nat explains: How we cut off the abundance we dream of and deserve The different types of conditional receivers so you can recognize which one you are Strategies to begin to break free from the conditioning you've experienced in your life without blaming or shaming yourself or others The ultimate need and goal we all share as humans The one thing we're all told to do as service-providers that actually sets us up for struggle and even resentment How conditional receiving impacts the strategic actions we must take in growing our businesses And the single practice where everything begins As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your action step and cocktail exercise for this episode.   EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Contact Information Nat's website -- be sure to get his resources around Conditional Receiving Nat on social media Facebook Twitter YouTube Resources mentioned Related Episodes Nat's first appearance on the Courageous Entrepreneur Show Sylvia Lafair Discusses the Patterns That Hold Us Back From Success Jeff Rock talks about The Power of Story Over Your Life Robyn Crayne discusses Money, Mindset, and Success   Ready to Become a Courageous Entrepreneur? You'll discover how to position and pre-sell yourself as the unique solution provider you are, and ultimately to profit from your expertise while you build a business in alignment with your faith, beliefs, and values. SHOW NOTES One of the things we know to be true is that we all want to work with experts. When we've got a problem no one sits around wondering who is an average solution provider I can get to solve my problem on the cheap. Our first thought is I have a problem and need an expert to solve it. We'll figure out how to pay for it later. Our own target audience feels the same way. And in today's crowded online market place and even in the noisy offline world consumers – whether in the business to business segment or in the direct to consumer or B2C space people are looking for the right expert. As much as it may be difficult to put ourselves out there, to take a clear stand, to communicate our point of view. But we MUST do it. Your audience is best served by YOU. Not someone else. Building your brand as a thought leader is an important part of that process. To discuss this idea, I've invited Samantha Riley on the show. She's a speaker, international business growth coach, best-selling author, host of the ‘Thought Leaders Business Lab' podcast, co-founder of the Global Thought Leaders Network and has 25 years personal experience in building and growing businesses. SHOW NOTES I started feeling the pull to go out on my own when I started to become unhappy with the types of sacrifices I was making for my employer – working 7 days a week; what I believed was too much travel, and way too much stress. But I ended up leaving way before I was ready. I had no idea what I was going to do or how to get clients let alone how much to charge. I ended up getting frustrated and having to get a job within a few months. The second time I went out on my own I was forced out by injuries I sustained in a car accident. And I struggled for years trying to manage my recovery and get my business established. I wish I had gotten the kind of information and had the sort of insight that today's guest had and has. Ed Gandia worked in corporate sales for more than 8 years when he didn't like the direction his career was going either. He was facing the same thing I was – a lot of travel – and he knew that if he kept going all in on his career he would be living out of a suitcase. So he created a plan to escape by building a business on the side. Ed went from replacing his six figure corporate job to being a well-paid freelance copywriter. He now coaches and mentors other writers to launch, build, and grow their businesses. No matter where you are on your entrepreneurial journey, Ed has some great tips and strategies that can help you get more clients and realize you're capable of more than you think you are. We also watch a lot of video with the majority of people consuming about 90 minutes of video during a typical work day but the extreme is there are people who watch as much as 3 hours of video in a typical day. Show Notes From the moment we're born we start learning. We discover that crying brings relief of our suffering and gets our needs met. We absorb the sights, sounds, and lessons all around us. As we grow, form our self-identity, and begin to dream of a future full of work we love that uses our great gifts and strengths we continue to absorb messages that others communicate to us intentionally and unintentionally. When we join the working world we become part of organizations that have varying degrees of emotional health and it's not always good. While we develop the foundation of our professional future and hone our skills and craft we get exposed to the beliefs, values, and behavior patterns of others…what in HR terms is referred to as the organization's culture. Without realizing it, our beliefs and behaviors are influenced by our organizational life and while the patterns we developed contributed to our success inside the organizations we worked for, out on our own, those patterns – of thinking and acting – can become disempowering…holding us back from achieving the very success we dream of and deserve. That's what today's episode is all about. This is an unusual episode for me and for the show. This is an interview-based program as I said in the introduction. But the past several weeks have been tough for me and for my guests. I've had a rash of guests who needed to reschedule for health and personal reasons. This has been a tough flu season and I had a terrible injury to my leg that made it nearly impossible for me to sit up for extended periods of time. So I found myself without a completed show for this week but I hated the thought of not making good on my commitment of delivering useful information and I know the importance of consistency so I decided to come out of my comfort zone a bit and do a solo episode for you. The information I'm going to share hit me like a ton of bricks a few years ago when I had what I can only classify as a nervous breakdown. I was still in active recovery from my brain injury. TBI's have a long recovery period and had reached a point of tremendous frustration as I was trying to build my solo consulting practice. I realized that the strategies that had helped me survive an abusive childhood were in fact now actively holding me back. Things like perfectionism, conflict avoidance, and others. The more I thought about those patterns the more I realized that they were the same patterns that contributed to my success as a corporate professional. I've been fascinated by behavior and personality my whole life and have studied it in school, at work, and in life. I have almost as many degrees as a thermometer – an associates in personnel administration, a bachelor's degree in education with a teaching credential in general business…a master's degree in Human Resources and 15 years as a certified senior professional in HR. I've also done post graduate level course work in counseling and psychology and have a bunch of additional certificates. And I've got a PhD from the school of hard knocks with a major in self-sabotage. One other element that makes me a bit quirkily unique is that brain injury. In addition to having to relearn how to learn (even to the point of having to relearn how to tie my shows) I experienced a big personality shift. Prior to the accident I had been what I would consider a solid ambivert who leaned towards extroversion. But after the accident I became a true introvert. I had to rediscover who I was and had to develop new ways of dealing with the world so I could be true to this new version of myself, continue to use my biggest gifts, and build the independent business I dreamed of. Show Notes This episode falls in the category I consider an entrepreneur's journey. I think there's a lot to learn from the path that others have traveled, mistakes they've made, and what they'd do differently now that they've achieved success. I particularly love to interview people who were experts in their profession for their employer who had to figure out how to position themselves as an expert and then not just build but run a thriving successful business. Today's guest fits that description perfectly. Andy Falco Jimenez was forced to retire from the Anaheim Police Department after 21 years with many of those years spent as the top K9 officer with the force. Andy was a recognized leader, sought out by other community police departments to do K9 training and was a nationally recognized speaker on topics related to training and building a K9 unit. But a pair of car accidents while he was on duty led to some scary symptoms for him and showed him how little he actually meant to the organization. Forced to retire, he had to find himself and build a business to fully support his growing family. He candidly shares how he did that. You'll hear the mistakes and most of all what he did to persevere and become someone who now helps others become the recognized expert in their field too. So listen in as Andy shares: What was so hard about leaving the police force The hardest part about building a business based on your skill and expertise The mistakes he made with his pricing and how he fixed them The reason he nearly lost his house in spite of having a business that made good money The important 3-part lesson he learned that changed his life and business Why and how narrowing his focus led to more clients How he built his authority status and you can too As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Show Notes As we grow, form our self-identity, and dream of a future full of work we love that uses our great gifts and strengths most of us come face to face with ways that society – including peers, institutions, and groups, including our family of origin – tell us we can't or we shouldn't or aren't able to have those dreams because of who or what we are. That's especially true for girls and young women. Changes are being made of course, but restrictions still exist. And sometimes our own thoughts and beliefs feed into those restrictions. Often we spend the first portion of our lives living up to others expectations and then something happens that helps us to break free and decide to create a life that's consistent with our own beliefs and expectations. Today's guest is a great example of all of that. Jodi Harrison Lee is a Martial Arts Master, co-owner of the martial arts studio, The Martial Way in LA county California. She's also a best selling author, speaker and trainer whose core mission is helping girls and women to find an embrace their strength, exude the confidence they have deep inside, and be able to defend themselves in any situation they're in. So Listen in as Jodi and I discuss: How young girls lose their confidence and how they can regain it How we often allow the opinions of others and beliefs of society to pigeon hole us and keep us trapped in a place we weren't meant to be The how sports and athletics lead to increased confidence and courage for children and adults. How easy it is to allow societal structures to keep us playing small Tips for finding and embracing your own inner strength As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode.   Guest Contract Information Jodi's website Jodi's book, Find Your Strength Connect with Jodi on Facebook Jodi on YouTube

It's no secret that social media has taken the world by storm and changed the way we communicate and the way we market our services. But lots of solo professionals I talk to haven't seen the sort of return on investment they dreamed of when they first embraced using social media and participating in social networking sites. Others have had decent results but are ready for more. And to be honest, it's taken me a long time to begin to reap the benefits. So I knew the time was right to have a conversation about this with an expert. We're going to focus on some big picture concepts and at the end I'll share some application ideas with you. My guest today is Leslie Horn Trosset. Since approximately 2000, Leslie has worked to master the art of cutting through the noise and marketing hype to help make millions of dollars for her clients. She takes clients through her powerful and emotional process of discovering where they are now, where they want to be, and uncovering what's getting in the way of realizing their dreams. The result is a customized marketing strategy that combines content marketing, SEO, and social media strategy that you can implement quickly and begin making more money. So listen in as Leslie explains: The jargon of social media and social networking   How to show up as yourself in social media and what exactly that means   Finding a balance in what you share versus over-sharing   What to do when you've been using a platform for personal stuff and you want to start using it for business    How to choose the right platforms to be on   Common mistakes she sees people making    Why you want to share your opinions and perspective in what you post   And what she knows now that she wished she new when first starting her business. I'm on all the big platforms but would love it if I saw more of a payoff of the investment of time and energy I make in social networking. So when my colleague Tracy Enos published her book that promised tips and strategies for using LinkedIn's publishing platform I grabbed it on pre-sale and read it as soon as it got released. You can find my 5-star review for it on Amazon. I genuinely loved it because it was so practical and I wanted to make sure I had her on to share some insight with you. I first met Tracy in about 2014 or 15 when I sat next to her at a big training event and we've stayed connected. She's a marketing consultant who specializes in Linkedin and particularly in how to leverage your profile and the publishing platform to position yourself as an expert, attract and engage with potential clients and referral partners, and generally build your brand. So when a PR rep reached out to me and suggested today's guests for the show I was skeptical. But I'm so glad I met these young ladies. Isabelle and Caroline Bercaw are the sisterpreneurs behind DaBomb bath fizzers. The two young inventors got their start in 2012 when they were 10 and 11 respectively. They liked using bath bombs but weren't crazy about how the bombs sometimes left their skin or the tub feel so they created their own. They started giving them as gifts and discovered the bombs were so popular they started selling them. The rest as they say is history. Today they're the faces of a multi-million dollar family business that employs their parents and about 150 people in their community. The girls are actively involved in marketing and running the company and in this interview we discuss the challenges of running a growing company while you're not old enough to sign a contract. Trust me, these girls have big lessons for all of us and the episode is full of insightful nuggets these teens share. So listen in as we discuss: How they grew their business from idea to initial investment to million dollars in revenue    Their approach to differentiating their product – this surprised me and it might surprise you   The challenges of running a family business and how they manage to get some down time   The power of and importance of branding especially in a crowded market   And what surprised them about running a business that might seem like a negative but they ended up seeing as a positive. SHOW NOTES We solo professionals and micro firm owners where a zillion hats. We're trying to juggle multiple important responsibilities including marketing, enrolling clients, servicing clients, product creation, and of course we'd like to have a life in addition to having a business. That's what we went into business FOR wasn't it? One of the issues we all wrestle with is maximizing the value of every minute and maximizing our earning power of every minute of the day and every ounce of work we do. There are only a few ways to make more money: Charge more Serve more   Lower expenses   Change your billing model   Create leverage For me, creating leverage means to build a business that's not just scalable but that also uses products as a way to attract potential clients – which means you're not using up more time in the day to attract that audience -- and use products to sell so you're driving additional revenue from work you've already done. I'm a big fan of the work once, earn revenue multiple ways model. But how do you do that without making yourself more overwhelmed and exhausted? That's what we're going to talk about with today's guest. Paulette Ensign was looking for a new strategy to expand her reach, attract more and better clients, and position herself as an expert. She had no idea that the simple 16-page booklet full of how-to tips called 110 ideas for organizing your business life would sell over a million copies or that it would be reprinted in multiple languages and formats all without spending a penny in advertising. The success she had with the booklet led others to want to know her secrets to convert THEIR knowledge into how-to, tips-based information products. Paulette's business grew as she developed products and services around the seemingly endless possibilities for using content as marketing tools, revenue streams, or both. She's a former elementary school instrumental music teacher, a past president of the National Association of Professional Organizers, and a fellow Jersey Girl although she lives in sunny San Diego. But her online home is at Tips Products.com. So listen in as Paulette shares: What exactly is a tip and how it can be of more value to you and your audience than a traditional book can    Ways you can leverage your existing content into tips that generate new clients  How you can profit from selling tips you used to give away for free    How a tips book or product can differentiate you as a professional    Where to find content you can use for your tips products – trust me you won't have to work hard to find it    And what she knows now that she wished she new when first starting her business.  As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. And you may have started paying attention to people who just flat out told you that what you were doing and what you wanted to build were wrong. If you're a corporate escapee like me you may have suddenly found yourself struggling to stand out, discounting your corporate successes, and feeling very confused and inadequate. Me too. And ditto for today's guest. Emma Churchman spent the first 17 years of self-employment making no more than 500$ a month. She tried everything to turn her business around but it wasn't until she faced some hard truths about herself that she was able to quickly turn things around and go from earning an amount that put her below the poverty level to earning multiple six figures in just about a year. Emma believes the more spiritually conscious you are the more successful you'll be. She is a business coach for conscious entrepreneurs who are ready to get help managing their mindset, money, and emotions. She believes that success in business is 10% execution and logistics and 90% managing ourselves – our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, choices, and ability or inability to take action. She teaches mindset success and how to take aligned action as part of her coaching practice. So listen in as we discuss: What exactly does it mean to be conscious The problem with following someone else's formula for business What it means to be authentic and why it's so important in the process of creating abundance The 3 things that keep you from making sales Why you have to face past trauma in order to run a successful business As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Show Notes As we go through our lives we come face to face with loss and disappointments – friends come and go; loved ones move to the next plane of existence; we have our heart broken; we don't get the job, promotion, or achieve the other milestones we believe we should have, and other emotional wounds. These emotional hits are the traumas of daily life and they leave their marks on us. We try to move forward and deal with them in the way we've been taught and enculturated to believe is the right way to deal with them. Many of us have been taught that we must be tough and deal with these issues and the grief they bring on our own. We may even have been led to believe that grieving is somehow wrong. But grief is part of the normal processing of emotions. And it's human to need help to navigate the accumulated emotional traumas and process the grief we feel to move through the process effectively. As we build our independent business as a coach, consultant, freelancer, or microfirm owner unresolved grief can lead to difficulties in moving forward. That's what today's episode is all about. My guest, Martina Meyer, is a life and relationship coach who considers herself as a personal trainer for your mind, heart, and soul. She helps others live a wholehearted, wholesome life full of joy and passion by navigating life transitions and healing unresolved grief. Whether you're mourning the loss of a relationship, a job, or some other life change, Martina helps you move through the incredibly human experience of grieving. So listen in as she demystifies grief and grieving by revealing: The myths associated with grieving How following what we've been taught as children and through our conditioning keeps us from effectively grieving The real secret to being strong The connection between job loss and grief How isolation only makes grief worse The difference between guilt and shame And How guilt and shame are involved in the grieving process As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Show Notes Growing a business can be scary. We know we need to put ourselves out there…we need to market ourselves in such a way that we get attention, inspire people to want to learn more, and ultimately to say yes to working with us. For those of us who are corporate escapees, we grew up as professionals in an environment that was a constant struggle between standing out and not really wanting to stand out. There was the good part of standing out: being recognized as a leader, getting a promotion, getting an increase. But there's also a lot of negatives connected with standing out in corporate life: being ridiculed, being punished. And heaven help you if you made a mistake at work. I'm sure you know people who took a risk and who made a mistake, who were disciplined, or even fired. It's bad enough to take a risk, make a mistake, even fail at something and have your coworkers and peers know it. It could destroy your reputation and your career. Is it any wonder we become fearful of taking chances when we're out on our own? Well imagine if you took a big risk - something you were excited about trying - and you failed. And what if people laughed at you? Horrible, right? Now imagine it was shown on national TV. And ended up on the Internet. How humiliating. What would you do? Would you crawl under your bed and pray the Internet would go down? Maybe someone would take pity on you and pull the recording offline? Well that's what happened to today's guest. William Hung went from being an unknown civil engineering student at the University of California at Berkley to becoming an overnight sensation because of his failed audition on American Idol. He's now a funny, inspirational speaker who shares his message of taking risks and embracing failure with students, association members, and entrepreneurs. And he coaches entrepreneurs who want to leverage speaking to embrace their mistakes, speak from the heart, and make the impact – and achieve the success – they were born to have. Listen in as William shares: How he ended up auditioning for American Idol   How what looks like your biggest failure at the time could actually be your path to success    His key point of view that helped him survive the pain of rejection and embrace the opportunities it brought   Where he believes optimism comes from   And the big secret he revealed on Jimmy Kimmel As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode.   Guest Contact Information  William's website Connect with William on Facebook Follow him on Twitter   Bonus Resources Is there something you're resisting taking action on? Show Notes As we build our businesses, we quickly come to the realization that we just can't do everything ourselves if we truly want to build a business and not just a glorified job. I know well how scary it is to make a hiring decision. I spent the first third of my career in human resources specializing in recruitment and staff development. There's no more important decision you'll make than who to bring on board and that's especially true when you're an entrepreneur. But how do you do it? How do you find, choose, and work with someone effectively? To answer that I thought I'd go to the horse's mouth so to speak and talk directly to a virtual assistant. Beatrice Ten Thye (pronounced "TenTie") is a virtual assistant who I originally connected with in a Facebook group. She recently wrote a post on Facebook that I'd describe as a rant. It talked about the big mistake entrepreneurs make by not using a VA. Beatrice has an extensive background in corporate and organizational life where she built her skills in administration, organization, project management, and problem solving. Listen in as Beatrice and I discuss: Why entrepreneurs find it so difficult and actually fear working with a VA Why she doesn't recommend that you just dive into asking questions when interviewing a VA When you should start thinking about getting a VA – it's likely to surprise you Mistakes made when hiring and managing a VA What to consider when you know you need help but can't seem to find the right person As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Show Notes: When you become self-employed you embark on the most intense – and expensive – personal development program ever. Often we discover issues we never realized we had or issues we thought we dealt with come roaring back to life. That can especially be true about money. And it's especially true for women. I've wrestled with my own issues around money including pricing my services appropriately, making good money decisions as a business owner, and understanding the financial elements of running and growing a business. I had a past guest on to discuss this. Justin Krane talked about pricing your services and we talked a bit about mindset but I wanted to take the topic deeper since I know how important it is. That's where the idea came from to have today's guest on the show. Robyn Crane is a money and business growth expert on a mission to empower committed and passionate women business owners to make more money and help more people, so they can have a bigger impact on the world. Show Notes This is one of those episodes where the subject matter is divided between my guest's journey to launch and build a successful business with something powerful they achieved at the same time.  In this case, it's landing a TEDx Talk. If you're an entrepreneur you want to maximize every minute of every day and that means multi-tasking when we can. Including our meal times. I read morning prayer as I eat breakfast and I watch videos while I eat lunch. They range from faith-centered messages by Melvin Pillay, success-centered messages from Jack Canfield, how-to messages from Pam Hendrickson, MOZ, and others to the many fascinating messages from TED talks. Maybe somewhere in the back of your mind you've thought you'd love to deliver one. You have a big message that the world needs to hear. And you love the idea of having your message go viral like Brene Brown's or Mel Robbins or any of the other top TED presenters. But how do you do that? Well one way is to start with a TEDx talk. TED talks of course are those powerful presentations that are 18 minutes or less that educate, inform, and inspire. TEDx talks are local conferences that are formatted similarly to the big TED conference. So how do you get to present at one? Well that's part of what today's guest is going to share with us. Robert James Collier is the founder of Entrepreneur's Dinner. These are exclusive networking experiences built around the idea that breaking bread with someone is a powerful relationship building experience like few other things. Rob has built his business entirely by word of mouth often spread by social media. He's going to talk a little about his business and how he developed the idea but he's also going to talk about his experience applying for, being selected to deliver, and then presenting a TED talk at TEDx Buffalo. Listen in as Robert explains: The common need we've experienced that inspired him to host his first dinner and what led him to believe this could become a business. What makes your average networking dinner so bad and the key element that can elevate it to something powerful   The concept of Psychological Intimacy and how it helps us build strong teams, strong networks, and can lead to strong client relationships as well. How he landed his TEDx Talk. As always be sure to listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. The show is available in both video and audio formats on a variety of platforms including iTunes, I Heart Radio, in the Google Play store, on You Tube and on my website Winnie Anderson.com. I've talked before about how we corporate escapees start our service-based businesses as consultants, coaches, or healers because we: Have skills and talents we love to use that we want to share with the world    Figured out the solution to a problem and want to share that solution with others who need it    Feel called to a mission and want to dedicate our lives to making a difference    So we're out on our own and we suddenly come face to face with our own crap. We discover we hate selling and aren't too crazy about marketing either. We struggle to talk about ourselves and the value we bring to others. And we can really struggle with money issues. We undercharge. We don't stay focused on the numbers and key performance indicators for running a profitable business. I say “we” because this has certainly been true for me. But it doesn't have to be this way. It's time to embrace our power…and that starts with understanding everything involved with pricing for profitability. My guest today is Justin Krane. He's a certified financial planner and money strategist for entrepreneurs. Justin is known for his savvy, holistic approach to financial planning and he advises his clients on how to unite their money with their lives and businesses. And he does it using a unique system developed from his studies of financial psychology. He educates and supports his clients in a non-judgemental way while helping them understand the financial side of running their businesses and making a profit. Listen in as Justin explains: Why it's critical to price for value and to create a premium pricing strategy The impact that self-confidence and self-worth have on our pricing strategy Why we've got to get to 6-figures as fast as possible Common mistakes made with pricing our offerings that limit our profitability and can create stress    And ROL versus ROI As always listen all the way to the end where I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Maybe we get easily distracted from a project or goal because we have so many ideas swimming in our heads or we may lack confidence in our work, in our plans, or even in ourselves. We may be naturally gifted in one area while we feel lacking in another and so spend all our time doing the thing we love and are good at. But the thing we're lacking in and avoiding may be the very thing that can move our business forward. One of the toughest parts of being self employed is actually getting clients, right? Whether we go to mixers, conferences, lunches, dinners, or use video to market ourselves and our services, we're putting ourselves out there and can feel really exposed when we're doing all that. And of course that's because are to a large degree. That's how humans operate.. we look, listen, and react. This fact can make us so nervous it can actively hold us back. Or we can embrace it. Develop our voice and point of view, leverage that, and attract the clients that resonate with our message so we're attracting people who will get the most out of working with us and who we would most enjoy working with. As an ICF accredited coach she inspires leaders to develop a strong personal brand that differentiates them in the marketplace and creates greater success for themselves and their organizations. When the field of executive presence was forming, Valerie was there helping forge the industry. Then when personal branding emerged she was there to merge the two specialities. Today's Valerie's focus is well defined. Guiding leaders and developing high performing teams; increasing business development and creating a culture of superior employee engagement. Show Notes One of the things many solo professionals deal with is low self worth and self-esteem and often we suffer without fully realizing it. We're pretty confident and we may have even been courageous at times in our former corporate or organizational lives. But out on our own where we can feel exposed and we may struggle with issues like imposter syndrome and what my friend Sandi Massori calls “who-am-I-itis” this can prove debilitating, disempowering, and ultimately can keep us from the success we dream of and deserve. I've had clients who were held back by this, as well as colleagues, and friends. I knew this was going to be an ongoing issue for me to address on the show because I think dealing with this takes courage and once you HAVE dealt with it you'll find yourself bravely taking the steps you need to take to position and presell yourself so you can profit from your expertise. And that's why I'm excited to bring you today's guest. Welcome to the Courageous Entrepreneur Show. This is the show that shares information and inspiration to help you break free from self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and disempowering patterns and break through to create the thriving, successful business you dream of and deserve. I'm your host Winnie Anderson. I interview entrepreneurs who've overcome amazing challenges to create success on their terms and experts who share insight and practical information that can help you get past your blocks and move forward with courage, confidence, and clarity. The show is available in both video and audio formats on a variety of platforms including iTunes, I Heart Radio, in the Google Play store, on You Tube and on my website Winnie Anderson dot com. SHOW NOTES Like you, I'm sure, my life is crazy busy. I try to fit in time for self care and I'm always on the look out for simple ways to help me manage myself better so I can continue to excel in work and life. And it seems that when you start thinking about something you suddenly notice it more and more. Like when you decide to buy a new car and suddenly you see that car you want everywhere. The brain has a specific thing to focus on and it starts focusing. That's what's been happening with me and the topic of meditation. I first started investigating meditation when I was in a particularly stressful point in my life. My husband and I lived 500 miles apart. I was in full blown recovery dealing with issues as an adult survivor of abuse. And we had family drama going on at the same time. I had heard that meditation could do great things and that people in all professions used it and believed it made a huge difference for them. So I tried it. I got nothing from it. But like I said as I started to think about it and read more about it I thought maybe it's time to investigate this again and I thought I'd go to an expert. And I figured you might be interested in it too so I invited back Brodie Welch for another interview and I was thrilled when she said yes. Brodie is a licensed acupuncturist, board-certified herbalist, Chinese Medicine expert and self-care strategist. She's the founder of Life in Balance Acupuncture in Corvallis, Oregon where she has been treating patients since 2003. In addition to her clinical practice, Brodie shares her expertise to help caring, conscious women take care of themselves through innovative learn-from-anywhere courses and coaching programs on stress management, digestive health, the body-mind connection, moving meditation, and Chinese medicine. She's the creator and host of the podcast, A Healthy Curiosity. The show explores what it takes to be well in a busy world. Jessica Yarbrough is a business coach for high – achieving women who want to break out of corporate life and quickly build a six-figure business. She's a former corporate executive who followed her heart and ended up having to move back in with her parents as she rebuilt her life and career. And how she began to rise up to create the thriving coaching practice she has today and do it in just 18 months.   How she dealt with the voice insider her that told her to go get a job as well as the voice of her parents telling her to get one.   The biggest blocks and mistakes that women have and make that hold us back from achieving what we really want.   And some great tips to begin to move forward to create the life and business of your dreams. Show Notes Corporate or organizational life is a bit crazy to say the least isn't it? Even though companies spend millions on health benefits they often can become toxic environments where stress runs high and people are often rewarded for bad behavior like being obnoxious, and even abusive. If their numbers are good, they get promoted and rewarded with bonuses and nice offices. I've always told people who lose their jobs or who voluntarily leave a position that they need to go through a detox period. They laugh and ignore me. And as much as I know that to be true I ignored myself. Think about the places you worked for a minute. Was working impossibly long hours a badge of honor? I worked for a company that wanted me to take a new job and travel 100% of the time. They were shocked that I turned the job down. But the life of an entrepreneur is incredibly stressful too, isn't it? So much to learn, so much to do, and then there's getting clients, getting paid on time, and managing your money. We started our businesses because we wanted freedom, balance, and of course the chance to earn an unlimited income. That's the dream we bought. But most of us would have to confess we have a very hard job with the most demanding boss in the world. We work crazy long hours and neglect our physical and even our emotional and mental health. That my friends is a recipe for disaster. We tell ourselves those are the sacrifices we make. We work harder than others do so we can live like others don't. The impact of stress has been well documented. It leads to a host of health problems that can negatively impact our quality of life and can even lead to an early death. Combine stress with sacrifices we make – skipping meals, too little sleep, eating poor quality food, not exercising. I don't know about you but I neglect myself a lot and I know there's a level of stress that's exciting but there's that level of stress that's unhealthy and even toxic. Then there's this issue of faking it til you make it, right? We feel as though we need to pretend that everything is fine because we believe in the power of our minds and thoughts. But the brain is smart enough to figure out you're saying one thing and doing another. So when I met today's guest, I knew I had to have her on the show to talk about the issue of entrepreneurial self-care. When I was a kid, my dad would talk about going on vacation to Homestead park. Which meant we were staying home. Every summer we would take one day trip to the South Jersey shore and spend the day at our cousin's house in Ocean City. That was about 3 hours round trip in the car. We'd also take one day trip to another Shore spot – closer to the mouth of the Delaware Bay and we'd spend the day with my dad's side of the family at our Aunt And Uncle's house. Probably another 3 hour round trip. So it's a massive understatement to say it was hard to imagine spending months in an RV with one of my parents. And when I think of the hours I spent in tears over a summer vacation trying to memorize the multiplication tables the thoughts of being home schooled give me nightmares. But Gretchen Breuner did just that. She took her kids out of school, packed them into a used RV, and set out to give them an adventure they'd never forget and help them make the connection that learning was fun. Even more surprising than the fact that she did it by herself and returned to tell the tale is that she discovered a whole new career and business. Her journey didn't end when she and the kids pulled into the driveway. In many ways it was just beginning. So listen in as Gretchen shares: How she went from stay-at-home mom to advernturess instructor of her 3 kids How listening to the voice inside her led her to build a thriving business after the trip How continuing to tune into the voice and follow its guidance led to a new path for her and new direction for her skills Tips to take your own adventure and turn it into a book or speaking opportunities Lots of insight into how navigate your own personal and business growth journey As always, listen all the way to the end and I'll share your cocktail exercise and action step for this episode. Most organizations no longer provide pensions as they were known in our parents' day. If you live in the United States the chances are good that you haven't saved enough or you may not have recovered from the investment losses you experienced as a result of the financial crash of 2008 or the housing market collapse. Or maybe you enjoy working and have no real incentive or desire to stop but you would like to create additional revenue for yourself. But how do you do that? Is it possible to build something on your own? Isn't that a young person's game? Today's guest is someone who illustrates that you can reinvent yourself at any age, take the skills you have, and repurpose them to create a thriving independent business for yourself at any age. The show is available in both video and audio format on a variety of platforms including iTunes on You Tube, and on my website Winnie Anderson dot com. There's a saying that self-employment is the most powerful and most expensive self-improvement program you'll ever go through. The reason is you come face to face with your own crap. Suddenly problems and issues you never knew you had bubble to the surface and actively work to hold you back. People who were former executives making multi-six figures with more degrees and certifications than a thermometer and with accomplishments that make others go WOW suddenly believe their stupid and not good enough. I once talked to an eye doctor who told me she was stupid – because she didn't know what to say on her website. How could she know? It's not like she's a marketing expert. I'll bet you tell yourself stories similar to that. Maybe it's "I can't charge that amount" or "no one will work with me" or "I'm just not good enough". We've all got things we say to ourselves that we truly believe and that end up keeping us trapped right where we are. I've got lots of stories I tell myself too. Well what if you could suddenly become the courageous action-taker you dream of? What if the past hurts and indignities you've experienced no longer had a hold over you? Today's episode is going to challenge you to really listen to and confront your thoughts. Grace Bell of Work With Grace spent decades believing there was something wrong with her, that there was something missing that she needed to find and get. And while eventually she became a trained mental health counselor with a husband and two small children, an unexpected divorce left her with the realization she suddenly needed a full time income to keep her house and care for her kids. You'll hear her story and how she managed to build a profitable, thriving practice and now helps others move past their fears, doubts, and disempowering beliefs using something called The Work. This episode will: challenge you to confront your own beliefs and how those beliefs may be holding you back    reveal the 4 questions to ask to confront those beliefs    and demonstrate a mini session of The Work Hopefully you'll be inspired to let go of the disempowering thoughts that can control you and leave you trapped in emotions that don't serve you and help you break free to create the abundant life you want and deserve. As always stay with us til the end and I'll share your reflection exercise and action step for this episode. Welcome to the Courageous Entrepreneur Show. The show features interviews with entrepreneurs who've overcome amazing challenges to create success on their terms and experts who share insight and practical information that can help you get past your blocks and move forward with courage, confidence, and clarity. The show is available on iTunes at TheCouragePodcast.com, in the Google Play Store, and on my website Winnie Anderson dot com slash paralyzed. What you're going to hear is the audio recording of a video interview. When I started the show it was a live interview show on the Facebook Live platform. It didn't take me long to decide to start doing recorded interviews. One reason I made that decision is because the technology is unreliable unless you've got top of the line broadband and hardware. So is you're going to hear some points where it sounds like the word or words dropped, you'll hear some delays and talking over each other at points and that's because of the delay on the livestream platform I used. I hope you'll excuse that because there's great information in this episode. If you've ever felt that you just couldn't go on and questioned if it would really be possible for you to grow a business using your gifts then I think you'll find the episode inspiring and informative. It's so easy to look at someone's success and think that it came easily to them or that they have some secret solution that you don't. But we each face our own challenges to reach our goal and often those challenges can be a combination of physical and emotional or mindset. Sometimes it's our mindset that leads us to physically be unable to move forward and sometimes it's both. Listen in as my guest Maryam Webster shares… How she went from a busy job as a sociologist with a growing therapy practice to paralyzed car accident victim and back to thriving business coach. Her response to the doctors who told her she'd never walk again The one person who provided the emotional support she needed What her friends, family, and even her husband told her about her focus on recovery and walking again. How she built her coaching practice while she was still extremely limited in her mobility And the lessons she learned as a result of going through what she went through. Someone asks how you're doing and you say OK except my back is hurting today or I'm getting my knee replaced next week. But when we have an emotional or mental health issue it's difficult to admit and that can make it difficult to get help for. Especially when you're an entrepreneur. It's no secret that depression can be a problem for entrepreneurs and publications including the Guardian, Forbes, Inc, entrepreneur, fortune, and business insider have written about it. I'll include links in the show notes to some of those articles. So when I saw my friend and colleague Shanna Landoldt come clean about dealing with depression on FB I was floored. There are a lot of “shoulds” and “must do's” according to gurus and they all have their take on the answer to your problems. Few are genuinely able to help you leverage what works and build a thriving business around that in the way that today's expert can. In today's episode you'll hear from former Wall Street Journal columnist and multi-best selling author Mike Michalowicz. Mike came across his knowledge the hard way – by 35 he had started and sold two multi-million dollar companies. Confident he had the formula for success he became an angel investor and proceeded to lose his entire fortune. He regularly talks about how although he ran an outwardly successful company he actually lived check to check until he realized how to manage his business revenue and put profit first. His mission now is to eradicate entrepreneurial poverty. He's the four time best selling author of Surge, Profit First, the Pumpkin Plan, and the book that Business Week deemed “the entrepreneur's cult classic,” The Toiletpaper Entrepreneur. This isn't as much of an interview as it is a workshop as Mike shares incredible insight into growing a profitable business built on your strengths. You're going to hear… • The single biggest thing an entrepreneur needs to do to lay a foundation for real profitability. • How our behavior patterns of the past can keep us trapped where we are or worse set us back to where we don't want to be • The big mistake we make when trying to course correct that actually makes things worse, not better • Two ways to scale your business and tips for choosing which is right for you • Why building on your strengths and hiring to manage your weaknesses is a key to success • The simple 3 part rule that helps you put a problem in perspective so you can decide on the best course of action • Why a “rally cry” is critical for your business and how it can work to attract the right clients and partners and how to create yours • The benefits of being a true recognized expert in your field. Welcome to the Courageous Entrepreneur Show. This is the show that shares information and inspiration to help you break free from self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and disempowering patterns and break through to create the thriving, successful business you dream of and deserve. You'll hear interviews with entrepreneurs who've overcome amazing challenges to create success on their terms and interviews with experts who share insight and practical information that -- when you take action on it -- can help you move forward with courage, confidence, and clarity. The show is available in both video and audio format on a variety of platforms including Apple Podcasts formerly iTunes, on You Tube, and on my website Winnie Anderson.com. I had reached a horrible point in my business life where I couldn't talk about my services. I was practically afraid to leave the house. One night while alone in my office staring at my whiteboard where I had written down what I wanted and what I couldn't do when suddenly I realized I was trapped in a pattern of acting and reacting…using strategies that had helped me survive a toxic environment while growing up and helped me be a successful corporate employee but now those strategies were actively holding me back. Two days later I went to an event and when I was checking in I discovered the speaker that night had a book that says we can all get stuck in patterns we developed in childhood as a survival strategy in our original organizations – our families. You don't have to have grown up in an abusive environment like I did to develop patterns that don't work for you as an adult. So when I was planning out this show I knew I wanted to address this issue and I hoped this author would be a guest on the show. In today's episode you're going to meet Dr. Sylvia LaFair. Inc magazine rated her as one of the top 30 leadership experts in the world. Her Total Leaderhips Connections program is one of the top ten best in the country as rated by HR dot com. She's a columnist for Inc dot com and The National Business Journals. She's CEO of Creative Energy Options and the world's leading authority in pattern aware leadership development. You're going to hear Sylvia explain: What patterns are and what being pattern aware means   How ingrained patterns we developed in our family of origin get anchored into us and get repeated in our work organizations. These can lead to disempowering actions and self-sabotage.   The role stress plays in developing patterns   How to begin to change your ineffective patterns to stronger, empowering ones that will help you create the success you dream of and deserve. Stick around all the way to the end when I'll share your reflection exercise and action step for this episode. Winnie Anderson had me at "Corporate Escapee." That term alone was enough for me to want to learn all from her that I could. Little did I realize, at least at first, how deeply rewarding my time with her would be, rendering the definition of that enticing term well down the list of things I find most interesting about this dynamic person. Winnie is, among other things, the creator and host of a podcast called the "Let's Talk Tech Show." On its own merit, the show is terrific; a treasure-trove of easily digestible resources for anyone looking to navigate the word of entrepreneurship, especially as it relates to the use of technology. But once you learn more about Winnie's journey, you'll come to appreciate her efforts even more. Winnie left the American corporate culture twice: once by choice, and once by circumstances beyond her control. Guess which one stuck? I'm not going to say too much else about it here, because she does such a wonderful job of sharing the necessary details of her journey in our conversation. Some of the key things that jumped out at me from my time with Winnie included: 1. How we tend to attach labels to our identity, too often defining what we do as who we are. And we then set ourselves up to struggle when these labels inevitably change, whether it be through career, relationships, health, or all of the above. 2. How the most significant challenges in your life can become some of your greatest gifts. 3. Pride – or Ego, if you like – and how it can hold us back from doing what we love, asking the questions we want to ask, or taking the steps necessary toward living the life we really want to live. ©2016 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises
