In this week's On Orbit podcast episode, we hear firsthand about the impact the Patti Grace Smith Fellowship is making. Patti Grace Smith was a pioneer in the aerospace industry who served as the head of the Federal Aviation Administration's Office of Commercial Space Transportation. She broke many barriers as a Black woman and was an inspiration to many. The Patti Grace Smith fellowship honors her legacy by working to combat racial inequity in the aerospace industry. In this episode we hear from two fellows about how they have been impacted by the fellowship. AJ Bekoe was a Patti fellow in 2022 with Ball Aerospace and is now a member of the fellowship's executive team. A graduate of Syracuse University, AJ was hired by her host company and she is now a Systems Engineer at BAE Systems. Spencer Roberts is a member of the class of 2024, interning at ABL Space Systems. He is studying Mechanical Engineering at Santa Clara University AJ and Spencer share their experiences with the intern program and talk about the value of the community it builds, from the cohort of fellows who spend a week together in Washington, D.C., to the network of former fellows and mentors. They also share their perspectives on how companies can step up efforts to recruit a diverse workforce, and tips for students applying for the fellowship. Applications for the class of 2025 are due by Tuesday, October 1.

Tell a potential employer why you're the best candidate and advocate for yourself, shares Shannon Morgan, Ball Aerospace RF Engineering Senior Manager. Flexibility and adaptability are the keys to success at Ball, where the fast-paced environment is very different from a typical defense contractor. “Make sure that you know your worth. Make sure you know what you're bringing to the table. And don't be afraid to tell a potential employer about it. The interview process is for you to get to know us, and for us to get to know you. In a situation where we probably have a number of different candidates, don't be afraid to tell us why you're the top candidate. It's really important to advocate for yourself, because no one's going to do it as well as you can.”Find show notes and additional links at: https://clearedjobs.net/ball-aerospace-advocate-for-yourself-and-ready-to-adapt-podcast/

Lynn Bernstein became the first college graduate in her family in 2001 when she earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado. She worked her way through college at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics and continued her career at Ball Aerospace. Her experience integrating and testing complex systems on numerous satellites taught her to think critically about processes, procedures, and accountability. She put her engineering career on hold for several years to focus on raising a family. Five years ago while she was in the process of applying to grad school, someone told her they didn't think NC election systems were adequately tested or secure. Intrigued but skeptical, she took an unbiased look at election systems, laws, and practices in North Carolina. Shocked and concerned by what she discovered, she put grad school on hold and founded Transparent Elections NC, a group devoted to ensuring that elections are worthy of the public's trust: they must be understandable, secure, transparent, robustly audited, and publicly verified. When she's not encouraging those in her community to get involved in election integrity, she loves spending time with her family, friends, and nature – hiking, kayaking, and foodscaping.
In this episode of the Knowledge Cast, EK CEO Zach Wahl speaks with Nicole Beale, Knowledge Management Project Manager at Ball Aerospace. Raven joined Ball Aerospace in early 2020 as a Systems Engineer and currently serves as lead for the Electrical Power Distribution Subsystem (EPDS) on NASA's SPHEREx program, which will conduct the first near-infrared all-sky spectral survey to study the cosmic origins of the universe and galaxies. Her contributions to the EPDS on the SPHEREx program have already proven invaluable in her 14 months spent on the project. In her first 6 months on the project, She was responsible for researching and procuring the solar array technology that will power the SPHEREx spacecraft and quickly realized that the original design exceeded the system's mass allocation. Raven discovered a novel technology that is more efficient, smaller, lighter and more powerful for less cost than the established baseline, thereby getting the project back on track seamlessly and with added benefits. She consistently provides valuable feedback for deliverables, researches options for spacecraft components and contributes design ideas.

The Host, Rick Staael, is interviewed by his Co-host Doug Kierstein. Rick tells his story of overcoming roadblocks in his life to become an engineer. Part 2 will continue the interview into the Real Estate endeavors. He has two associate degrees in electronics, an undergrad in Electrical Engineering and a Masters in Systems Engineering. On my way to get to a decent tech job, I worked at grocery stores, pizza place, painting and fixing consumer electronics. I worked 5 years at Rockwell Collins before going back to NDSU for my EE. After school, I worked 10 years at Ball Aerospace. For the last 15 years I have been working at a big engineering conglomerate that has been a great adventure. Secrets to his Success God has had his hand on me and directing my path. Staying focused on your goal and prioritize them. Education Learning from life experiences. Having permission to fail, well, to give it my best shot and possibly fail, and then address the issue. My favorite books are "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and "The richest man in Babylon" and my favorite podcasts are "Bigger Pockets" and "The Double Comma Club". A book not referenced but has changed my mind about sending kids, especially boys, to school as early as possible is "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. He gave example after example about how the oldest kids in the class have a greater chance of success than the youngest. It took years of my adult life to overcome that sense of being always behind, so my son is one of the oldest in his class.

Resilience: The ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. Well, if these aren't difficult times I don't know what is. Ok! However, humans are born with a resilient spirit. Despite that fact, there is a limit to everything. If you or someone you know has been pushed to your limit, more often than not, this is episode is for you. Sneakpeak, YOU ARE NOT POWERLESS! According to Psychology Today, many factors that determine resilience—such as genetics, early life experiences, and luck—can't be modified. But specific resilience-building skills can be learned. These include breaking out of negative thought cycles, pushing back against catastrophizing, and looking for upsides when faced with setbacks. That is why our guest Buck Davis, is the perfect person to share insights into building resilience. Buck has multiple master's degrees, has been in the speaking and consulting business for 21 years. He's worked with everyone from Starbucks, Facebook, General Mills, Ball Aerospace & The US EPA. He's also worked across all types of industries from manufacturing to retail to tech companies. You may have seen him on CNN talking about race in America or get this, this is so random, he's also pitched products on QVC. As if a dozen or so jobs aren't enough, he also creates inspirational videos. He credits so much of his life to a resilient spirit and positive thinking and not only does he live his life in the practice of it, he shares it with all who wish to hear it. Settle down, tune in, and be empowered. Josh Eskin is the principal engineer for Ball Corporation's Aerospace division located in Boulder, Colorado. They make satellites used for Google earth and other similar applications. Josh Eskin was at the Science Fair demonstrating information on the James-Webb space telescope which he describes as the "next big space telescope" to be launched. This new telescope takes up four times the area of the Hubble Space Telescope, and will be launched further into space than previous telescopes and satellites, trailing the earth at one of the "Lagrange points" where the gravity from the Earth and the Sun are in balance. This launch is set to happen in 2018. We also talk about space junk such as old rocket casings, expired satellites, and the problems they pose to current and future aerospace projects. Watch Dr. Carl Weimer from Ball Aerospace and Technologies share his comments on Instrument Qualification during the Short Course "Fundamentals of Optical Frequency Comb Technology and Applications" at the Keck Institute for Space Studies on November 2, 2015.
Bringing us stunning images of distant galaxies, Hubble has become our eyes on the universe.
Bringing us stunning images of distant galaxies, Hubble has become our eyes on the universe. And Ball Aerospace helped make that vision clear.
A long awaited improved thruster fuel has passed its tests and is go for launch into space!
Are humans smarter than dinosaurs? We haven’t proved it yet. In the long now, the greatest threat to life on Earth, or (more frequently) to civilization, or (still more frequently) to cities, is asteroid impact. The technology exists to eliminate the threat permanently. It is relatively easy and relatively cheap to do. However to date, government organizations have not made this a priority. That leaves nonprofits and private funding. Considerable efficiency may be gained by going that route. Ed Lu is CEO and Chairman of the B612 Foundation, which, in partnership with Ball Aerospace is building an asteroid-detection system called Sentinel, aiming for launch in 2018. A three time NASA astronaut, Lu is also the co-inventor of the “gravity tractor” -- one of the several techniques that can be used to nudge threatening asteroids out their collision paths with Earth. Asteroid threat is an attention-span problem blended with a delayed-gratification problem---exactly the kind of thing that Long Now was set up to help with. Taking the extreme danger of asteroids seriously requires thinking at century and millennium scale. Dealing with the threat requires programs that span decades, because asteroids can only be deflected if they are found and dealt with many years before their potential impact. The reality is that the predictability of orbital mechanics makes cosmic planetary defense completely workable. Sometimes real science is more amazing than science fiction. On February 15th of this year, civilization got a wake-up call. A 45 meter asteroid, large enough to completely obliterate a major city, missed Earth by only 17,000 miles, and hours later a smaller rock, 17 meters in diameter, exploded in the air over Chelyabinsk, Russia, injuring 1500 people. Interest in B612’s asteroid detection mission spiked accordingly.
Main Feature (starts at 5:25). We talk with Dr. Robert Arentz from Ball Aerospace in Boulder about what's new and interesting at Ball and in space missions in general including asteroid impact hazards on Earth and what can be done about it. Our two features for this week's show: Susan Moran interviewed Joel Smith, principal at Stratus Consulting in Boulder, who has been helping the city adapt to climate change—in particular, by smartly managing its water supply; and Tom Yulsman interviewed John Troeltzsch, the Kepler mission program manager for Boulder-based Ball Aerospace, which built one of the key instruments for the mission, as well as the spacecraft itself. Cohosts: Susan Moran, Tom Yulsman Producer: Susan Moran Listen to the show:
Dr. Jeffrey Van Cleve, Ball Aerospace & Technologies CorpThe Kepler Mission http://www.kepler.arc.nasa.gov is designed to detect transits of Earth-size planets orbiting in the "habitable zone" (HZ) around main-sequence stars of apparent visual magnitude 9 through 14, of F through M spectral type, by means of differential photometry of ~100,000 stars in the constellation Cygnus. Jeff will discuss the box in temperature-diameter space ("The Corral") that Kepler was designed to search, and show the population of extrasolar planets known from ground-based radial velocity and gravitational lensing observations. He will present a calculation of the distance between Earth and the nearest transiting planet likely to be discovered by Kepler, and compare it to results of an all-sky planetary transit survey mission similar to TESS (The TESS PI has commented that "...when starships transporting colonists first depart the solar system, they may well be headed toward a TESS-discovered planet as their new home"). He will end with some speculation on why the end of the nominal Kepler mission coincides with the end of the Mayan calendar (and possibly the end of the world as we know it) on Dec. 21, 2012.Watch video
